The end?
Really?
I thought that was a dead story suffix decades ago.
It's redundant to the final paragraph or sentences of the book.

Eg.
The hero kissed the gal then got on his motorcycle and rode away, into the sunset.
The end
Riding into the sunset already says this adventure is over
...or that a sequel will soon arrive at your local theater... And then another....

Can I save this picture and even upload later as it looks a superb reference for weathering
I WAS going to take the jeep over for a car wash this afternoon...but then I thought: "What if Jaz avalley wants to use it, too, as a reference for weathering?" After all, it IS superbly weathered!

So, and being thoughtful and considerate of others and their needs...I didn't. :D

It's still weathered, although now blanketed by five or six inches of new snow...er..."global warming." Probably wouldn't make for good reference pics anymore, as the jeep, like the snow, is white.

But it's a DIRTY white!

Thanks too for the new lawyer jokes. Now I have a total of four jokes, and three reasons for my sister to roll her eyes at me, not just the one. :D
What's black and tan, and looks good on a lawyer?

A Doberman.

Do you know why you never hear about sharks attacking swimming lawyers?

Professional courtesy.

A tour bus full of lawyers crashed in a farmer's field, killing everyone on board. When search parties arrived on the scene, they found the farmer had already buried the victims to prevent his cattle from getting sick from the corpses.
They asked the farmer if he was sure all the lawyers were dead, and he told them, "Some of them said they wasn't, but you know how them lawyers lie all the time!"

Why did the lawyer cross the road?

To get more billable hours.

Morning all,

Cold front slowed a bit overnight, so the rain is a bit slower at getting here. Was 68° when I got up this morning, currently 54°. I did hit some small patches of sprinkles on the way in this morning. Driving the wife's car as I have to make a couple of stops for more stock ups. She's thinking about putting some dry goods storage in the basement where I have the toilet paper (bog roll for those over the pond), paper towels and other cleaning supplies.

We do have a small freezer that's full of meat, and it seems that as we use stuff, it gets added to so it's never empty. I know there's at least 50 pounds of hamburger hiding in there. We've been buying it when it's on sale at a local meat market. 85/15 for usually less that Kroger, Wal-Mart or Sam's sells it for, and conveniently packaged in 1 pound vacuum sealed pre-frozen packages. I need a bigger freezer, although we're going to be pulling a couple of turkeys out of it in the next week or so.

Oh well Time for work...BBL

Agreed: first lesson is don't be complacent.

Amtrak MW, (as usual), set up the occurrence, by not restoring the switch to normal position and locking it. That's the first act of carelessness and a major Rules Violation. That failure set up the chain of events that led to the occurrence that is shown in the video(s).

The Strasburg crew, failed to exercise caution, and as indicated by another video, the Engineer was not looking ahead, but looking at the train and waving to the passengers on the Strasburg train. However, I'm not sure how the siding is defined by the Strasburg, however, as of the 2003 Edition of the NORAC Rule Book, the Strasburg is not a participant in NORAC. They are essentially a Tourist attraction and used to be staffed by volunteers. Don't know their current status, but the brakeman or fireman, should have been riding the front step to be in position to line the railroad if incorrectly aligned. The Engineer should have been looking in the direction of movement. I know that close in visibility is limited on a steam locomotive, but that's why he should have been vigilant. He had plenty of room before the switch to see it wasn't properly lined.
I can’t say for certain, but I don’t think that was Amtrak equipment. I’ve never seen Amtrak equipment moving on Strasburg tracks at Paradise in the12 years I worked there.(in the 90’s and early 2000’s)I doubt they would be permitted to operate their equipment and throw switches on another railroads property.

On the Strasburg, the only time a crew member rides the loco is at Paradise, after the loco is uncoupled. The brakeman rides the loco through the spring switch, checks the points and signal the loco to proceed. (I’ve done that many times there). If a crew member had to ride the loco at the Paradise runaround,it would be the cab step and even seeing that is rare. The height of the run-a-round track is pretty high. I never done it, didn’t have to.

You are correct by saying that the loco crew should have been watching the track. Looks like the loco was moving a bit fast too. If I remember correctly, I think they are suppose to be operating at restricted speed.
Accidents happen. A lot of bruised egos, especially Virtual Railfan. They cut the feed to both Strasburg cameras and were constantly pulling down any of the video of the incident from their camera view. That puzzled me.

One more chapter to edit.

then I've got a brisket flat to trim, and get the salt dry-brining on, so I can smoke it this afternoon.

Got to see the kid and boyfriend last evening. enjoyed a pizza with them

That was after spending a few talking with an old friend, while the wife did her business meeting. We had a nice talk until it turned to poly-tics. I walked away at the end just shaking my head. If we all turn off the TV "news" channels we might get along better. All of the opinion poorly disguised as "journalism"or "news" is rotting this country.

Here's my morning cuppa. Needs a refill Flo. Dark roast, please. And yes, that Thelonious Monk on the Pandora channel. Gotta get some good jazz for the final push on this manuscript.

Good morning from the desert. Leaving at 7AM local time or about 90 minutes. Terry is awake and like me ready to get home. It’s +20 degrees warmer in Wisconsin this morning but I see around when we land it might be raining.

The daughter adds another year to her age today.

The golf banquet was great and thankfully no dust collecting trophies are given out. We finished 3rd in our flight and 7th overall. But we did extremely well in the daily side events but 90 holes of golf in 3 days at 70 yrs old is too much for me. I generally cannot sleep on planes but I think this return trip will be different

Back to the trains later today

Good Morning All. It's currently cloudy and 72°. The NWS is predicting Armageddon for later today, starting just after noon.
From the local Dallas news site:

1667556555250.png

At least 20 area high school football games were rescheduled and were played last night.
While I am technically west of the I-35 corridor, we will feel some effects, hopefully not the real severe stuff.
Meanwhile my wife may not go to Dallas this afternoon for her flight out of DFW Airport, since it actually doesn't leave until around 2:00 pm tomorrow. She's taking our granddaughter to Cocoa Beach FL where they will meet up with my daughter who's attending a conference there. They will visit Cape Canaveral while there. I am not in favor of driving on I-35 on a Friday in the rain anyway. Staying in Dallas overnight is not a priority with my wife. I think that I talked her out of it citing safety.
Further updates as they develop.

I made the grocery trek yesterday alone, and it was very short and quick. Grocery prices seemed stable and gasoline dropped to $3.19/gal.

Later in the afternoon I went up the road to the "clubhouse" to talk to my neighbor about the tractor/mower. I didn't post it yesterday, but when I inspected the engine, I found an accumulation of grass clippings in the area of the cooling fins. I removed them and a dead rodent who had made it's home there. But the damage was already done. The engine had overheated, parts warped and separated, oil leaked out and the whole engine is now locked up. A replacement engine is about $2K. Need to think about this! An equivalent new riding mower is about twice as much, and this one has over 350 hours on it, not that it matters anymore. The zero turn models intrigue me even though they are more expensive.
I refer to the "clubhouse" above. My neighbor has a 1200 sq ft three-sided corrugated building, which is part workshop for his small engine repair business, but about 300 sq ft has a picnic table and benches, a couch and several other chairs, two refrigerators, and various grills and wood-burning meat smokers. This is where he, his dad, some buddies and neighbors gather every afternoon to drink beer. His wife won't let them use the house regardless of the outside temperature. I only occasionally partake because I'd rather be in the train shed. They get pretty riled up about politics out there but it is OK because they agree with me. I have just heard it all already.

Thanks for all of the likes and comments regarding yesterday's posts.

I did almost nothing out in the train shed yesterday, as I was up the road. Before I went, I completed mounting the signs on the diner and added an arrow to the stand-up sign.

Whether or not I get out there today is dependent on the weather and whether we decide to brave the Friday afternoon rush hour on the wet freeways. Bonus is that Discount Model Railroads is within a few miles of where I am dropping her off. But they are also open tomorrow after the weather passes.

Ugggh! Discounting some midnight ramblings by Louis, there are 70 posts in the Coffee Shop from yesterday to catch up on! I count Louis's posts as part of Wednesday's posts.

Dave B - As time consuming as it is, I like painting figures.
Joe - Your insights and observations regarding the 475 accident were really a good railroad rules education to me. Thanks.
Hughie - The brewery really looks great. It really stands out on the layout.

Everybody have a great Friday.

Good morning all, 32° in east central Minnesota, some sprinkles out there

What did I miss in Willies post?

I love the shark, I mean lawyer, anecdotes. Sums up our experience with them. They are like the plague, best keep your distance.

Willie - is that your lawn tractor or what kind of tractor quit after 350 hours? I would think it would have smelled really bad before totally giving up. We have an older X-304 (I think) John Deere riding mower with over 9,000 hours on it. Now the hour meter quit this fall, but that is what was on there last time it worked. You can tell I am a John Deere man.

Snow - we do not have any yet

back later

Hi again. The son texted last night. They have a job at the McDonald’s Observatories in Fort Davis, Texas. He took 7 of 9 employees plus 1 significant other for each for the weekend. A work and getaway trip for the Crew. However, the high winds and predicted snow had him jittery about the work on ladders to be done. Work today and tomorrow and if weather messes up they will stay Sunday. Says it is gorgeous but cold there.

My experience in talking to vets of various ages in all areas of our country has given me the opinion that VA experiences vary, primarily because there are good and bad VA facilities.

Same with "civilian" hospitals. They vary in quality. There are some in our area that I've heard have a bad reputation and to stay away from them. Others are top notch.

When my daughter was around 2 she had febrile seizure. The EMTs came and diagnosed what it was but thought she should go to the hospital to have it confirmed in case there was some issue they were missing. They asked if they could take her to XYZ hospital, which is like 5 miles. It was on the "bad" list and my wife, an RN, asked if they could go to another one about 6-7 miles away from a different group, or better, that same groups "children's" hospital down town (about 20-25 miles). They agreed and went to the downtown one, though either would have been fine if they hadn't wanted to go down town.

Whether the reputations are deserved or not, they exist and come down to individuals experiences and expectations and interpretations of those experiences.

Currently 43° with thundershowers in the area. They are predicting the off and on nature through the rest of the day. We may see some small hail.

BBL as it's time to go home for the day. Next week has shorter work days due to the Friday holiday. 4 8's instead of 4 9's...Yea!!!!!

John Deere makes a good product!

My poor zero-turn... It came with the property when we bought it. I've been able to keep it "alive" for the 6-7 years we've owned the property.

The starter relay is toast, so I have to jump the relay with a screwdriver, like most of us have done to an old car back in the 70's.

Here's a picture of my "starter" sitting in the tray.

One of these days, it's going to breath its last breath... until then, I'll keep applying bandaids and duct tape, lol. It's not a John Deere, but it's built like a tank.
