I discovered something about Fedex that I don’t know if I was supposed to be told. Monday and Tuesday are generally reserved to commercial deliveries, and individuals most likely won’t get their stuff until Wednesday or possibly Thursday.
And it doesn’t matter if it’s “out for delivery” or “loaded on truck for delivery”, you still won’t get it.
Maybe in your area. Doesn’t seem to hold around here.
But more importantly, there are three FedEx organizations and it depends on which one is bringing your stuff.
There is the express arm. Their trucks have a purple and red logo. They bring everything but the slow ground. In my experience they meet their deadlines.
There is FedEx Ground, but it has two separate orgs that maintain their own trucks and hubs.
There is Fedex Ground with purple and green logos trucks. They’re primarily a commercial delivery service. They do residential too if someone doesn’t check the residential box when sending. This may have restrictions in days in some areas.
Then there is FedEx Home Delivery. Also purple and green logo since it’s a division of Ground. They do residential only and what should be bringing stuff to most of us. As long as the sender checked that RESIDENTIAL box. And there is an incentive for them to do it as a Ground residential deliver costs more than a Home Delivery one.
It’s possible in some rural areas that the ground and home delivery are run by the same guys, but in most areas are separate, with separate trucks and even hubs the trucks load up at and leave from. (Home delivery stuff goes cross country on the same Ground semis and then when it arrives at the Ground hub is sent on further to the Home Delivery hub).
Another difference is that the Express drivers are unionized company employees driving company trucks. The Ground and Home Delivery guys are independent contractors who buy routes, their own trucks, etc.
FedEx Ground started some 25+ years ago when FedEx bought the former commercial-only ground shipping company RPS, which worked on this independent contractor model. They re-labeled it FedEx Ground. It’s become more integrated since but that’s its roots and why the operations are basically separated.
