Just got back from visiting a fellow modeller who has been into MRR for about 40 years, has exhibited at numerous shows over the years and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to MRRing, he asked me if I could bring my two new acquisitions so he could see them, and maybe give them a runout, he has quite a large layout, three-level approx 4' X10' shelf style layout, with two liftouts across the doorway but still in the process of adding buildings and scenicking, but tracks are laid and I like to see my locos being able to have a decent runout.

So off went the GE ES44 did quite a few decent laps, no problem all was well, and I decided, stupidly as it turned out, to let it run up the 3%
incline, which does an entire circuit of his empire to reach the upper levels, it wasn't hauling a rake so what could go wrong, seems that although, like me, he has a perspex guardrail that runs the entire length of the layout he'd recently been doing some work on the upper level and several feet was missing, this is where my loco met his cat, (which we didn't know was there) and knocked if off the rail, now this guy is around 6'6" so the upper level sits around head height, (I'm 5'11"), straight down and landed on its back, despite the carpet it pretty much exploded, I can't repair it, we honestly couldn't find about a third of the bodyshell, I've salvaged the chassis, motor and decoder and one of the trucks plus some other bits of the running gear but that's about it, seems I'll have to see about getting another one at full cost, on the up side he did apologise tho.
That just plain sucks!!!

That's my biggest fear right now with my track testing is something taking the plunge to the concrete floor below!

I had a GP38 fall off my upper deck on to the concrete floor a few years ago and it came out of the accident unscathed. It hit right on its side which I think saved it.

As long as your track is about 4" in from the side you'll be fine, but each level he has is about 12" narrower than the one below it, it should have fallen onto the one below, which it did, but bounced onto the one below that and finally the floor, hence the severe damage and probably why we couldn't find all the bits.

Good morning from a soggy Houston. We have received 2.25 inches in the last 2 hours. Like Willie's area, the ground is saturated so local flooding is an issue. I my area we depend on a small bayou that drains to a larger bayou which drains into Galveston Bay.
Still working the shower project. Small delays have prolonged the finish date. Today's weather is not going to help.

Grizzled - Best wishes and prayers to you and your wife.
Sherrel - Hang tough
George - Sounds like a great outing
Troy - Hope your mom gets to feeling better and can get settled in her new digs.

No train time lately

STAY SAFE

picture of the day:

some context to this picture: You see a UNITED Airlines Aircraft and a Police car. United always wants Police support when they touch ground. they will be observed by the police the whole time, till the leave ground again.

Why does United want police support? So they can get ahead of unruly passengers?

Is that an A340 wing in the front of the pic?

@Snowman i was a simracer had everything was also streaming, but was more into NASCAR then on street racing. was "playing" with iRacing. And i was part ina german NASCAR League for about 2 years. but i did also some laps on the nordschleife with a Merc AMG GT3 :) and was also a part of a Porsche Cup :D

And yes i "know" the Nordschleife aka Green Hell from races but was never there in person. Maybe someday i will go there!

I started myself back in 2000 with the original Papyrus* "Grand Prix Legends" at VROC. There were not many of us then--maybe 100 US side, 200 EU side--as the online concept was still in its infancy....

[*Papyrus's original source code is still part of the iRacing core even today, as you probably know]

While I myself have dabbled with iRacing, I primarily ran rFactor/rFactor after Papyrus first morphed into iRacing. I'm 64, and am much more of the "Historic Racing" persuasion...but I've run a fair bit of various NASCAR sims too. :D

[Ask me]

If you ever did any of that yourself too, we may well have crossed paths on track, as I was a North American regular on several of the big German League sites (all rFactor). There were four or five closely linked German sites--I recall them using different colors: Brown, Black, Blue, White--and what was so cool then was the huge number of drivers. Upwards of 2200 active drivers on the biggest one then, IIRC.

--------

Back to Nurb: In the VROC days we had a live chat, and this young kid from the UK would come in and jabber up a storm talking about his father's involvement in (real-world) historic F1 racing. Just bubbling over with enthusiasm this youngster. He himself was racing karts too (not just GPL), and he eventually became a first class racer himself.

The car was a Hesketh 308C and his father was Guy Edwards, who was one of four drivers who pulled Niki Lauda out of the burning wreck of his Ferrari in 1976. Young Sean [RIP] had the thrill--this has to be unique in all history--of driving his Dad's car and playing the [non-speaking] part of his father in Ron Howard's racing movie "RUSH."

--------

Which brings me all the way round. Sean was also one of the four drivers to win the 2013 24 Hours of Nurburgring...

...driving a Black Falcon Mercedes SLS AMG GT3.

Really cool to learn you've had a chance to drive one there yourself. :D Tip-o'-the-hat to you!

Afternoon All,

Started out the day with the usual chores then headed to the dentist office. The surgeon was 2 hours late from the scheduled appointment. :mad:Typical doctor crap. My extraction will be Monday morning. After getting home I cleaned the locomotive staging tracks then moved the locomotives back onto the tracks.

Smudge- That truly sucks. Interesting garden RR. I hope the train crew were ok.

Bill- Neat photo.

David- Have fun with the grandkids.

Sherrel- I'm glad you're doing well.

Willie- Hopefully the damage to the layout is not as bad as first thought.

I hope everyone has a good night.

i think maybe i was saying something wrong. i was never on the real green hell, only in the SIM! Would love to go and drive there. the only thing i have driven is a Cup Car AMG GT3 but in italy on a small circuit. but its awesome to have such a beast under your ass! :D your story sounds awesome, but i was never into rFactor but have heard of it for shure. i "started" with Live for Speed, then asseto corso or what ever it was called. and than iRacing because of the huge NASCAR part.

on the Nurburgring are taxi laps, that means you can sit in a car with a local racecar driver and sit and have fun but not driving by your self. there is also a track day where everyone can get on the nordschleife, but there are too many cars then so i dont think i will ever drive there. but tomorrow i will watch! :D

cheers

i really cant tell why they want police escort all the time. its only the americans and i think also ELAL the israeli airline. but whats special about elal they have there OWN police on the ground and also Xray everything 3! times.

i guess its because the world of today is a little weird to say the least

oh and yes this should be a winglet of a Edelweiss A340-300! ;)

Ah, no worries. The mistake was mine. :D

Sim racing is unique in there there IS so much real world/gaming world crossover, and it's actually possible for some of the talented few to move from the PC up into the real thing. But much more common are real racers who are sim-racers too, and there are a LOT of those guys out there. Some using their real names, some not....

Things are moving along here on the SFW estate. While the carpenters are not coming today since they aren't able to exactly match materials, the roofers are here. They have a work-around and they are proceeding after sloppily carrying 44 bundles of shingles one bundle at a time from the driveway to the train shed. That's about 220' per one way trip. As of this writing, they are half done after just two hours. I told the carpenter to just come close, as the missing fascia and soffit are on the side that faces away from the road and I will be the only one who will know.

My cell phone magically started working again mid-morning, but my wife proceeded to move forward and get new ones with a different carrier who guaranteed reception in our area. They are being shipped to us next week. She had been hinting for a few weeks now, that it's time for her to get a newer model. Maybe she sabotaged mine!
