Accidents happen! You will enjoy that diesel

I mowed the lawn yesterday with my 21" Cub Cadet self propelled mower and thought maybe it's time to buy one of those 0 turn ride on's.
It takes me about 3 hours to mow and pack up the clipping for the town to take away. Looking at some of the options there not cheap.

Good morning from some weird looking skies in So. Central Wi. The skies have that yellow pink dangerous look to them. If I was guessing looking out the window I’d say rain is coming in a hour or so. But I looked out the window! The professional guessers on TV and the WeatherChannel app says not before 10am.

I will store the outdoor furniture cushions after I’m finished here. No need for them to get wet! When the storm event gets here it should be significant but without the winds from Tuesday night.

Played some golf Thursday, grilled my steak dinner, watched the NHL game last night between Dallas and Edmonton but I rarely watch overtime games past the 1st overtime. The Oilers scored the son texted me a few seconds into that 2nd overtime. I had just hopped into bed at 11pm which is early by a good 60 minutes for me. I was exhausted and slept straight through till 5:25

Today: another trip to the post office. Then a trip to Home Depot for those 4 panel screw in flat panel lights

This garage seems so dark with the old twisted bulbs still in the ceiling. Remember when those seemed bright?

Then because it’s supposed to rain this afternoon I will be testing a few locomotives on the layout. I sold the last of my 6 axle diesels yesterday, a Genesis GE 9-40c. Now I’m thinking I should seriously look at upgrading from my fleet of 5 Gp40-2L’s and move into the 2000’s. But that means 6 axles and switching with big GE’s or the Sd70m2’s just doesn’t feel right to me. I have 3 GE units from Scaletrains and 4 Sd70 somethings from Athearn Genesis to program, test and weather. Today is the day to see how those big guys test out handling the paper mill. The 6 axle units I have owned I realized never really switched the mill. They were used as through service, handling mainly unit trains or the 2 daily manifest trains. The joys of hobbies!

Enjoy your day

I use a 0 turn mower at my church cemetery. It's OK, but I have to hold on to both steer handles or else it will start turning off track.
I would think it's a good mower if ya have lots of obstacles in your yard, but for the basic, uncluttered yard, a regular mower is fine and a lot cheaper.
Yes Ken lots of obstacles in my yard. Old flower gardens that my wife use to take care of are full of weeds now, I have no time for that now.

I don't think a ZTR would be a good purchase. I've had a couple of tractor-type riding mowers, and they performed well. Just looks for one that has a good reputation and good reviews from multiple sources. Avoid one with a deck wider than 42", as the wider deck will tend to dig into the lawn as the rear tires hit bumps and dips in the lawn. Also, the narrower deck makes it easier to mow between stuff, so you don't have to spend as much time with a weed eater or trim mower.
If you get one from a big box store, most of them are made in the same factory, with different paint and features. I like the hydro-drive models with cruise control, it's less fatiguing.

Gomez I don't spend any time with a weed eater. I've been spraying the weeds with 30% apple Cider Vinger. It does them in fast. They say you should be drinking at least 2 teaspoons the 5% Apple cider Vinger with water daily. So I don't mind spraying weeds with it.

Good Morning All. Another muggy morning, cloudy and 76° with humidity at 90% with no wind yet. Low 90's today and tomorrow with possible 97° on Sunday. Despite predictions, it never rained yesterday although there was considerable lightning after darkness settled on us. Best as I can tell, it was north across the border in OK.

Yesterday's grocery trek was uneventful, prices seem to be stable compared with last week. Still outrageous compared to 3.5 years ago. Gasoline across town hasn't moved much, between $3.19 and $3.39/gal everywhere. Traffic was terrible everywhere, mostly distracted drivers on their cell phones. Denton is after all, a 2-college town and I think that everyone was moving out of dorms and apartments. Store itself was not crowded and there was no line at the manned checkout lane.
Afterwards, I made some repairs on my septic tank pump and it's good to go again. I also redid the window A/C install in the bedroom...don't let a wife assist in the first place.
Dishwasher and burn trash start the chore list today and then I figure out which other tasks I want to do.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I continued with my town project. It was time to add additional street markings. These come from a place called Highways and Byways Model Railroad Graphics.

Troy - Sorry, but the moth incident was amusing! Shelving looks good.
Unfortunately, the day coincides on the calendar with the kickoff to summer. Down in Indianapolis, where I spent 20 years living, they have people fly in from all over the world to watch it rain on the 2.5 mile oval piece of asphalt known as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Evidently the race around making left turns, in between the raindrops.
The race is actually on Sunday, not Memorial Day since 1974; although rain on Sunday could get it postponed this year.
Terry - An additional call to the emergency services department should speed things up.
Mac -
Problem with lack of proper parenting is obvious here, that woman didn't even show any survival instincts, and the guys were yelling at her to get away even as she was stubbornly getting her bags in the face of danger.
I watched the video without the sound and didn't realize that folks were yelling at her. There's a reason that we have rodeo clowns in the rink at rodeo events here in Texas, distracts the bull when a participant is down.
Joe -
The flat wage levels coupled with outsourcing of white collar jobs along with blue collar jobs, changed these entry level service jobs into survival level jobs.
I know that holds true in many areas, but in my area, manufacturers are finding it difficult to find and retain labor, even at $18/hr which is high for Texas. By comparison, fast food wages are still in the $12-$13/hr range, but they're hurting as well.
Curt - Good job on recovering from the scam. I don't remember if it is called Harvest Gold, it came with the house in 1981 so I never knew. But by golly, it still works even when the power is off!
This November's election is to me, the worst choice of candidates since 1976! I'll have to vote for policy instead of personality.
Patrick - Best wishes on the upcoming surgery.
Swal - One of my neighbors swears by his 0 turn mower, while another swears at his! I opted for a traditional garden tractor when I bought a new one last year. It's a Simplicity Regent 48" with the tightest turning radius that I have seen on a garden tractor, almost 0°! Cost was the most prevalent factor as well, Simplicity has lots of those 0 turn mowers in their product line. Their cheapest 0 turn is almost $3K more than my top of the line garden tractor.

Today is Bob Dylan's 83rd birthday. Great songwriter but he has one of the worst voices in music. My opinion only.
Everyone have a great Friday.

Good Morning!

I've been doing a wee bit of travelling around with the wife, while she checks out various greenhouses. It gives me the odd opportunity to catch a few rail photos from other places.

Curt - Very sad, indeed, that dad was scammed. - Those damn criminals are everywhere. It seems like a whole new industry that no-one seems to want to do anything about. It's kinda like the drug business, where it involves so much money, the elite are allowing it to happen.
My wife was scammed twice last year. Small money, but, still stolen money. I don't allow her to make purchases on-line anymore. Not without me checking it out.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Morning folks

33F, clear, and about 6" of white yesterday remaining. It froze hard enough last night to put a 1/2" of ice on any standing water so I expect that was the end of any plum, apple, or cherry production for the year. That and the zero degree weather at the end of October which killed all of last year's raspberry canes. A fruitless endeavor----- But the strawberries are looking good so maybe not.

And the railroad bench plans for yesterday turned into several hours of scoop shovel work following which any plans for the rest of the day were a bit altered.

My wife made another visit to the floor this morning. She is no doubt going to have a BIG bruise on her left elbow but no broken skin or bones. I'll be amazed if she is still living here 6 months from now.

Scams: my late mother was on every "sweepstakes" scam list in the country. Primitive by today's scam standards, fortunately, but she did get well taken once, at which point my father finally put an end to the total nonsense. When my siblings and I cleaned out the cabinets after her passing, there were 50 something boxes of stove top dressing.

Looks like your mom has room for a small-ish tv, as well. If she wants one. If she does, make sure you put her info on the back of it, so one of the other residents doesn't help it walk away. And they will, though it's usually because they think it's theirs. Also, mark her clothes, so she gets them back from the laundry.
TROY
My wife embroidered her mother's name on all her clothes when she was placed in a home. The staff loves new clothes, and if the patient has a bad memory, the new clothes are gone within a few days. Same with jewelry, personal items, etc. Sad but true. I would guess thievery by the staff happens at about 80 percent of all homes

Good morning everyone!

Coming into the coffee shop a little later than usual, so I will have to go catch up.

A couple of thunderstorms have moved through the area already this morning. Nothing really severe at this time. The lawn guy sprayed earlier this morning so I hope the rain doesn't wash off all the treatment.

This is my daughters last day of school. They have a 11:30 dismissal. Hard to believe my once little girl is going to be an 8th grader. Where does the time go? nice thing is all the sports and extra curricular activities will be done, so layout work can go full steam ahead this summer.

Have a safe day everyone!

Be sure to post photos when you receive it.

Agree about Dylan. Just can’t stand listen to his mumbles

Policy choices for November, that is a scary thought that I will not decide on until I’m in the booth! I just hope both decide at the convention they are too old and feeble of mind to continue on…

Gas prices, personally it’s the oil companies not policy deciding the price. $3.59 this morning up $.29 per gallon fro 17 days ago when I last purchased here

Wages, $20 TO START at our local McDonalds, 10% raise after 90 days. The staff there and at the Culver's a block away all look like they have recently crossed the border! There was an article about the local workers recently in the area rag. Basic premise of the article was, the staff hired are willing to work and our local high school kids who live in the area says $20 is insulting!!! As for seniors, the article said there are few seniors in our area who need to work. Ones that do have to drive in and cannot afford the vehicle and gas. It sure is a different world out there…

The road signage looks great

It’s not that the locals don’t want to help, they don’t have the tools. That’s from our local police chief in an interview a few months ago

My issue with ScaleTrain diesels is that they use ESU for decoders but specific software for ST. Something in that software IMOO is killing the motors. I have sent 5 locomotives back to the absolutely EXCELLENT customer service department at ST, 2 of mine and 3 client diesels. Of all the layouts I have operated on since retirement in 2014 I have never or heard anyone ask what brand locomotive are they operating. It’s a crap shoot out there in model railroad land

I do love ST freight cars though.

Short house update. Except along walls where I need to rip some boards the upstairs "bonus space" flooring is down. There are a few places that were not as level as I thought -- mostly where two of the subfloor OSB came together and formed a ridge (it was open to weather before the roof put on). We used a sander to sand all the ridges down but a few places we seen to not have done a good enough job. Its a floating LVP and I'll just stick some glue and a heavy thing on any seem that wants to pop up after we're done and settling etc has taken place (floor settling, not house though that will happen too -- due to the build length a lot of that has already happened and with the concrete construction it seems we have less house settling that causes problems or something -- we'llsee).

Also the daughter has been making the drawers for the kitchen as she can and I helped her and also put some doors on. We'll do more this weekend.

My 1.5" bamboo sheets came in to make the bathroom vanity tops -- we're doing suspended from the wall, open underneath. I need to put some 1x2 or 1x3 ledger board type supports along the walls to hold them iup, cut them into size and shape, and silicone them in and get holes cut for sinks. The sinks are the sort that sit on top but they are semi recessed anyway (Kohler) so you still have to cut a small hole. Plus for the plumbing.

The plumbers want to come in, probably starting this coming week, and start with showers, kitchen sinks, etc. Any thing we're ready for they want to get started on so that when the summer slam hits they're done with me as much as possible.

The masking tape on the floor is to help hold pieces down while we put the next piece down -- so that tapping one doesn't cause a previous one to move. The tape just provides more friction. We'll pull it all up obviously.

There will be wood facing against the edge of the overhang and a 4 -5" wide strip on the edge flat over the flooring. That 4-5" piece will be put in so we can do the railing soon but the other part can wait. (The decorative vertical part on the overhang edge).
