Afternoon All,

Started out the day with inside and outside chores. After goofing around for a bit, I headed for the train room and ran a train for about 75 minutes. I think there's a grocery trip tomorrow I'll be called to chauffer for.

TomO- That is some really nice-looking equipment.

Patrick- Our grandson has one more week of school. Scratch that, he's been expelled for the rest of the year due to fighting. Of course, he was slated for summer school due to grades. I wonder how that is affected now?

Smudge/David- I read an article online that your NHS has been using contaminated blood for years and hid the fact from the public. Is that true or internet BS?

David- Have fun with family and friends. Reading Grandmother's House reminds me of mine who I haven't thought about in years (she passed in the 80's). Thank you.

Bill- Interesting photo. The Chevy screams the 70's.

Grizzled- I have probably been to 20-30 nursing homes while working in EMS. My viewpoint: a couple are top notch (read $$$$$), a couple are horrendous, and the vast majority are fair to poor. You can tell a lot about a nursing home by how the air smells when you walk in.

Willie- My Dad does that constantly with either the day or the time of his appointments, even with the appointment card in his hand.

Old 97- Our DMV's are pretty quick too since they have opened several mega size DMV's.

I hope everyone has a good night.

After thinking about what I wrote on the notations line on my check to the lawyer maybe I should have listed it as a medical expense being it was fees for a Medicaid application and tax detectable. I don't know either way they got me. luckily, I don't live in New York City.

I don't see any way my wife's impending stay in long term care is going to be financed through medicaid and that is going to no doubt put a very large dent in our "liquid" assets and may in fact, eventually result in selling part of the property which will be unfortunate. So goes life (and death). In the meantime, that is to be avoided as long as possible.

Perhaps not the proper place to admit this, but my personal feelings about nursing homes is that a stay there for myself would be far worse than being dead. But then I have the same opinion of cruise ships------
Grizzled I'm not sure where this is going with Medicaid. The nursing home charges $525.00 a day to stay there. It will be another 2 weeks before any decision will be made by Medicaid so our lawyers says. If they don't approve the application our on-hand cash will last about 18 months. After that I have no clue what happens. Half our money is mine so I'm not sure how they can take that. They can't take the house. So as long as I'm living here that will not be an issue. About living there, no I would not like to stay there. A lot of mindless people looking into deep space. Not the ideal place to finish off your life.

Appropriate this month! 🤣

Mom Update: They've invited family to meet with the docs tomorrow at 5:30ish and discuss mom's condition and progress. I asked the social worker if Mom was close to getting released (fearful she would be).

Nooooooo... We just did the memory/cognition test and she scored 8/15. That's moderately impared. We don't recommend anyone live on their own in that state.

Also, we know she's just entered stage 4 of kidney disease, has AFIB, poor balance...

I get the sense this is part 1 of the journey to convince Mom that it's time. We may need another meeting with the docs (or two) in order for her to see that.

Sis #2 was there this evening to drop off laundry and visit. She's an hour+ away, so will phone into the meeting.

Sis #1, myself and my wife plan to make it. And, we found medical Power of Attorney online with the Indiana state govt website. The social worker at the rehab faciilty directed me to look there. She said the facility couldn't provide them, but we do have notaries on staff. Not sure if one will be there when we are, but I printed off the forms and will take them.

Sis #2 texted after visit with Mom, and said she's open to Medical POA. If that still is the case tomorrow, hopefully Sis #1 or I will be named.

George: 1. The Attorney's Fee is an acceptable expense according to Medicaid. For taxes, it should lump in as a line item for care. Consult your advisor. 2. The whole Medicare process is screwed up. You are at the mercy of the caseworker assigned to your wife's case. Yes, nursing care will bankrupt you. So will assisted living. I thoroughly agree with Grizzled about Nursing Homes (and Assisted Living facilities). I would rather die on the street, than be sent to either...My wife feels the same way...Some are worse than others, but they're all bad.

Boris you seem to know a lot about this. My attorney asked me about whether or not I needed two cars. My wife's car has $40,000 miles on it and my truck 60,000. I guess you can only have one car if you or your spouse is going on Medicaid. My wife's car gets 30 miles to the gallon my truck 18. I would like to keep both. They tell me I could buy one of those $78,000.00 trucks that are not selling without a problem but can't keep a car worth about $8,000,00 and a truck worth $16,000.00. How does that work? When I was there today, I said, you sent me an email requesting the balance of the $7,000.00 plus bill but where was the email telling me how the case was going. I didn't receive that one. My attorney said, you know you can call us at any time with any question. That's why I'm afraid to ask them about the two cars thing. The $450.00 an hour phone call.

"Sell" one of the vehicles to a friend or relative for whatever your attorney thinks you can get away with selling it for on paper. When they title it, have them place you on the authorized drivers list, then just reimburse them for the license, registration, and insurance.
I currently live alone, and have a high-mpg car and a basic truck, so you aren't alone in that.

Good morning all!

Happy hump day!

The storms that were forecast did not materialize. It sure got windy and the skies looked ominous, but everything blew over the top of us. Going to be much cooler today than the last few days of mid to upper 80s. Low 70s and breezy.

Check back later.

Have a safe day all!

I don't know that it's a good idea to try to play the "defraud" Medicare game.
They seem to have ways of finding out stuff. People have been doin this for a long time, so the new ideas, are only new to the user.
When ya get caught, not only do ya have the court costs, attorney fees and sentencing fine, but ya still have the medical expenses.

Howdy everyone, it's 71 outside (76 inside) here in NE Indiana. The A/C went out yesterday and it got pretty hot in the house. It felt like 84 outside when we went to bed; and it was supposed to RAIN last night 0.87 inch. So, luckily we have an overhead fan in the bed room; because I had to shut all the windows. Open windows with almost an inch of rain would be adding insult to injury. Could have went down to the basement and tried sleeping on the recliners; but Joan is still recovering from knee surgery and she said she could not do it, so upstairs we went. Luckily it didn't rain at all last night. The A/C is acting goofy. The unit comes on, don't know if the compressor comes on; but all the air is coming out of the top of the A/C and nothing is coming out of the vents, like a valve is not opening and it's back flowing into the A/C. Joan called the A/C people last night and it would have been $286 an hour for emergency service. Boy did I pick the wrong field of work.

I went through a four year apprenticeship at Lockheed Aircraft to become a General Machinist, and then went into tool design (left that because of wearing a tie requirement; plus I didn't play golf). The tie thing was choking me to death. Long story short, I finally became a Tool Maker and was the highest paid hourly employee at the company. I retired 14 years ago and now kids are making $20 an hour flipping hamburgers at McDonalds. I know most of the people on this forum are close to my age and feel pretty mad about scrimping and training to make a decent living only to have teenagers making over $20 bucks an hour for entry level work...Obviously, by my complaining, I didn't sleep well at all last night. A/C is a requirement nowadays.

Our Medicare system is designed for you to fail. If you do it "their way", you end up a pauper living in a cardboard box under a bridge. And it does your loved one no benefit at all, just delaying the inevitable for a few months, at best.

It's the purchase power that really matters.

To add more insult to injury, our phones don't work. We use land-lines. We have 5 phones in the house and a pay dial phone in the garage. The phone company has been doing a lot of work in our neighborhood and they having to do a lot of rework. All of our lines are underground and they hired cheap labor to run new cables. Cheap always winds up expensive and there have been techs out in our housing tract with cables pulled up and work benches installed and they are doing a lot of rewiring. Our phones do not ring. When I was writing my first forum thread this morning, I happened to look up my phone and it was lite up. I went upstairs and asked Joan if she was on the phone and she wasn't. She looked at the number that called us and it was the A/C people. Luckily I noticed the light on the phone or we might have been in for another hot day. I do not believe in cell phones. People get to the point where they can't go anywhere with out them.
