Afternoon shop dwellers!

Well weather here in upstate NY is just gloomy with lots of rain showers the last few days and more of the same the next 2 days. Blah!

I have been busy with my parents, my mother had hip replacement surgery last Friday. So ya that tends to make ya worry and do things that need tending to. Then my parents leave for Nova Scotia on Friday this week to visit my eldest nephew who is graduating with his Masters from Xavier college up there. (He just published his 11th book last week that is now on Amazon.com) I will be staying behind as I will be house sitting and baby sitting my parents dog that cannot be kenneled up. My baby sister whom I lost last year, her best friend has arrived today from Tennessee and she will be driving my parents up to the graduation. I have known her since 1985. Long time. She is the Godmother of all 3 of my nephews. So my #2 nephew will be going too. He will help do the driving. They have 14 hours to drive to get there.

Other news, I cut down (8) 70 foot pines this past Saturday for my dad. They were all dead. I proceeded to cut them all up. It took me about 3 hours. So this will go to the road for camp wood. We usually set out there and people take it. We don't need it.

Train front.....

Big news I made a purchase from Yankeedabbler.com I finally got steam locomotive Union Pacific 844 in the Era 2017+. High-Shine Black "Race to Promontory" version. https://yankeedabbler.com/athearn-athg88413-fef-3-4-8-4-up-union-pacific-844-w-dcc-sound-ho-scale/

I had been waiting for a bit then decided to pull the trigger. I have the same edition of the Big Boy 4014 "Race to Promontory" version. Both units have the LEDs and Tsunami2 with the latest Athearn upgrades etc. I should have it by Saturday. I already have the auxiliary tenders from Scale Trains, both sets early and late versions. It will be fun to run them on my layout. When 844 comes in I will post it on the RPO thread.

Next I will be looking to get #3985 in the future. I have gone back and forth on getting BLI vs. Athearn but I decided to stay with Athearn. I don't need the smoke option. I have a friend who has the Lionel version and it is nice too but hard to get one that isn't messed up at this point I am unsure if there is a new release of them either.

I got a Pike's Kit Diesel work shop too which I will post on the RPO as well.

Not much else going on just working and fishing when I can and work on the house as well as yard work. I will be mowing the lawns and fields this weekend for the first time when the rain stops.

Ya'll have a good one!

First day on the job, as a student Fireman / Hostler at Wilmington Engine Terminal, in December 1967, I got to run the 4800. The very first unassisted move on the railroad, moving the very first GG1.
The same with me Boris but after only three days there I had the work the Yard A switcher alone, while the engineer was working Yard B, using a P Engine to couple 3 coaches on to a passenger train headed for Grand Central. I hadn't had a chance to even move one of these engines yet.

Hihi, after some weeks checking in on the forum and what do I see? Dutch trains in the USA-forum...weird.
The middle one is the international train from Amsterdam to Berlin (Germany), I love that train.
It passes my town every hour. It runs every 2 hours, but the train and returntrip are passing here about the same hour .30 hour

Hi Mara Yes, seeing the DB train I guess it was going to Germany. Nice to see it also.
Amsterdam Central is a busy station. Such a lot of trains arriving and departing.

10'x6', The wye tracks are an abandoned. I am aware that there is no storage space on the layout, but I enjoy running trains through scenery more than switching. I generally take my shoes off indoors, unless I know I'll be going back out.
OK Got ya. Nothing wrong with that at all. I like your plan. The inactive wye is a nice touch.

Shoes...I mostly wear them inside, arch support. Wife mostly doesn't.

Good late afternoon 4:40 in Vegas. It has not hit 80 yet and the prediction was 81 but it was a nice day anyway with winds blowing in the high teens. My partner and I had the best combined scores today both scratch and handicap. Natural scores were 72 and 80, 135 with handicaps. Shadow Creek was stunningly beautiful and with the wind blowing, hard but fair. Claiming those $ prizes definitely paid for the plane ride here. That was nice. The ladies are still out, they went to a horse farm this afternoon. Terry said it used to be Wayne Newton’s home and his equestrian center. Text from Terry said they were about 30 minutes from getting back. Dinner is at 8 tonight but I am hungry now. Went down to one of the “convenience” type stores hidden near the lobby. I settled on a small bag of M&M’s for $6.50. Hey, I was hungry!

I got an email this morning that a favorite online hobby shop for me, TRAINLIFE.COM is shutting down and the website is posting 40% off everything. It is the brick and mortar storefront for Exactrail but none of that brand is showing on the website. I will miss it but life moves on.

After dinner tonight, we have a helicopter night ride scheduled if the winds calm below 15mph. Tomorrow we tee off after lunch at 2:15 so early tomorrow we are heading out to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead as a couple of the folks in our Crew have not been there. I will check in later tomorrow or Friday morning.

Sounds like you're having a good time Tom.

Concerning old Rivets, the first GG1 was a concept model, and was assembled using existing steam locomotive technology. Once the motive power people decided that the design was what they were looking for, they ordered the balance, using newer technology. While I was thrilled that my first move was the 4800, most Engineers did not like the 4800 in their consists. Supposedly, the original did not play well with the rest of the fleet. My personal experience does not confirm the consensus. Then again, It was rare to catch the 4800, as a prototype, it was really one of a kind.

I'm kind of pissed that the folks running the State Museum of PA, are so cavalier about the old PRR locomotives, the steam power, as well as the 4800. These are priceless artifacts that are left out in the weather, while other lesser stuff is displayed inside. They cry about money, but if they had an unlimited budget, they would squander it on other less valuable artifacts.

That was a pretty good deal. I ended up snagging 2-5 packs of Walthers 40FT rebuilt well cars.

Just returned from visiting my brother for a week in Spokane, Washington. His health is not real good, so most of my touring Spokane was via pickup truck. The last time I visited was about 20 years ago.
We drove past the location of the old Great Northern yard, which was named after James Hill. ( The area is called HILLYARD.) Only some of the tracks remain. Last time, I was able to see some foundations and old holding tracks.
I suppose this is progress for Spokane, just like when the railroad arrived over 100 years ago.
