Hello Internet users and followers of the medical miracles of our age.

The doctor stopped by the bed around 2 hours ago. Said if I feel up to it and the Hospitalist agrees I can go home tonight. The Hospitalist is already 30 minutes past due. He also said he’ll get brownie points from the Insurance company. I think he was kidding.

45 minutes under the knife and Doc says he removed 9 lymph nodes and pathology has them. Might know tomorrow but for sure on Monday. Was only in recovery for 2 hours and they moved me to a room. Around noon got my thyroid replacement meds to take. Also, soup for lunch and an insulin follow up. No gliperzide or Metformin for my diabetes while in the hospital. Feel good now but starting to wear down again. Nurse just came in and said she ordered me dinner since the Hospitalist is a no show so far. Terry just left to grab something to eat.

Tom O: Good to hear you "survived" I hope pathology comes back with favorable news. Take Care.

Ken: There is always tomorrow.

Spent the morning putzing around drinking coffee and doing stuff on the computer. Showered around 11, much to the chagrin of the wife, who was hoping to go buy plants. After lunch, we fertilized and cleaned up in the yard. I fixed the squirrel baffle, (for now). and used the nail gun to secure a loose board on the neighbors fence. (Been like that for 2years, and I got tired looking at it). I was surprised, how easily and quickly I ran out of energy...:(

Spent time on the NJ Devils Blog, reading management's excuses for the horrendous season, and the fan bases ,mostly humorous, reactions and comments.

Baseball tonight: Baltimore Orioles won over Minnesota 5-3. Birds on a two game win streak...Meanwhile in Philadelphia, the Phillies blew a 7-0 lead late, and lost to the Amazin Mets. Wow!

Hockey tonight, disappointing, as both the Capitals and Pittsburgh lost their respective games. Not happy!

Friday and Saturday forecast to be rainy. Time to work on the Model RR.

Point No Point Bridge 05_05_2022.jpg

Conrail's Point No Point Movable Bridge, which crosses the Passaic River, and connects Newark with Kearny. Located on the Passaic and Harsimus (P&H) Branch. This routes traffic from Oak Island and the West into the Meadows Yard, South Kearny Intermodal Yard, and points East. Conrail announced that they will be replacing this structure with a new one beginning this summer. Note Pulaski Skyway in the backround, and lower Manhattan's skyline to the upper right. Rode overthis bridge on numerous occurrences, and walked it a few times also.

Been there done that got the t shirt and I am
still years away from retiring….sighs.

Good morning all! Cloudy and 56 on the way to yet even more rain and 63.

Took off early from work yesterday since I worked late on Monday. Came home and took a short nap and then got called back in to work for a little bit. After that we went to my youngest granddaughters 5th grade band concert. We grabbed a bite to eat while still in town and then headed home.

Back to work today and then the weekend off. I may take off a little early today since I had to go back in yesterday. Need to go get my new glasses anyway, so that would be a good chance to do that.

TomO: Glad surgery went well. Hoping for good news from the lab.

Hope you all have a great day!

Good morning gang!
58° and raining, with more of the same for the next 36 hours or so.

TomO Good news on the surgery, keep improving!

Ken. The lawn mowing doesn't bother me, but the trimming kills my back too. My 4 cycle Toro trimmer works great, but weighs 2x what a 2 cycle motor does. I see lightweight battery power in my future.

Good morning from the adjustable bed with the lake outside my window. It is maybe 3-4 blocks away Just past the Nursing building and the UW soccer and the Womens softball fields. I am up high enough to see games for free.

My surgeron I am guessing has not earned any brownie points from the Insurance company. He checked in on me a few minutes ago and apologized saying the Hospitalists in the place are unreliable but that they control who leaves. Said sorry to get my hopes up. The nurse said they will corral the “H” to let me go. Still even though we all thought I’d be leaving, here I am waiting for a soft breakfast. I did get shaken awake every few hours overnight to check the vitals. I have a slight itch behind the neck bandage which the nurse will remove before I leave today. My pain meds are 200mg of ibprohuen which Terry was told to bring from home so we don’t have to pay $13.00 each. It had to be a new sealed bottle opened in front of the nurse. I have taken 2 tabs 3 times since getting to my room yesterday, I think! They are self administered so Medicare and the Supplemental insurances won’t pay the crazy price.

They are wearing masks and face shields here in the hospital. Only 1 immediate family member allowed as a visitor, no one under 16. If your not double vaccinated you have no chance of visiting and if you are not boosted you get the 15 minute swab in the nose test. They also reinstalled the old draconian visitor hours with Nurse Catchet enforcing them. This place was empty at 8 last night.

Anxious to get home. Thanks for the well wishes!
Tom

Morning all,

First chance I've had to post today. This morning at the house was crazy, with trash day and me forgetting to wash my jeans earlier in the week. So it's casual Friday without my jeans and t-shirt.

A bit over 4" of rain in the gauge over the couple of days. It is overcast, but expected to break into Sun early afternoon. Temp today of 72°. On tap is 80° tomorrow and in the 90's the remainder of the week. A little early for that. I blame Willie for not keeping it south...

TomO and Steve: Glad your procedures went well.

Glad you are doing well, sir.

I started my home PT yesterday, and took a short walk outside. Took one Vicadin at bedtime and hoping that will be the last one as I only have two more in the scrip. I think I can get one more refill of 10, but hoping not to need them. Surgical nurse wife says, "Don't push," Although it is just two small holes on the outside, he did a lot of work on the inside. I did get downstairs to watch TV last night, but wife called me up not long after we finshed eating to sit out back on the deck and enjoy the beautiful evening. The arrival of true Spring-like weather will help recovery, no doubt.

This is one time, I wish I was still paying the godawful price for cable. My Wild dropped the first game 4-0, but won the 2d 6-2. Looks to be a fun series to watch. Anybody know any work-arounds?

Got an email announcing the arrival of 5G home streaming service, so will be looking into that. Currently pay $125/ mo for hi-speed internet only from Comcast/Xfinity - - - - - robbery, IMHO, but monopolized.

Shedding season and there is cat-hair everywhere. Wonder how the train table is faring? Today, I may go run trains.

Did you have your thyroid removed?

If so, that's quite a change from my wife's surgery 30 years ago. She was in hospital for three days, with a drain tube in the incision site.

Glad you're on the fast recovery. Good luck with everything.

Good morning Shop Dwellers!

I wanted to make this post last night, but I was busy with family commitments and it just got to be too late.

It's raining buckets here this morning, expected to continue thru early Sunday - that's why I was out mowing my lawn yesterday evening since I wouldn't have the regular Saturday time slot available to do that chore. Didn't leave me much time for model train activities.

Joe - I encountered the same thing [asked to present a credit card] the last time I visited a LabCorp clinic, but don't remember seeing any armed guard. I thought nothing much of it - "just trying to cover themselves in case insurance doesn't pay" - but I had no clue they weren't even billing the insurance company!? <RANT> Wow, it's no wonder the insurance carriers "prefer" them. This is just another example of corporate bullying: Squeeze your money out of the source of least resistance, i.e., the financially-struggling consumer; and force them to navigate the maze and jump thru all the hoops to get reimbursed. The provider enjoys the benefits of being listed as "in-network", while their patients do the same amount of work they would do with an out-of-network provider. I HATE the Medical-Industrial complex! </RANT>

. . .
IB Ken- Nothing to be ashamed of. All my dwarf signals are fixed with rule 290 (restricted speed) on my sidings. The LRT boards can support 2 signal heads (2 tracks) and are stand alone. You can get them with photocell or IR sensors. I use the IR. You can also set the cycle time that the signal goes through the 3 aspects (proceed back to proceed) and the sensitivity of the sensors. This time around I mounted the boards close to and facing the aisles so I can wire it while sitting on a chair. No soldering or cutting rail involved. I had them on my last layout and was able to figure them out when I was much more clueless electronically. If you have specific questions, please feel free to ask. I know when I purchased them, they had a board for B&O signals.
. . .
Curt - Thanks for the info! I went to the LogicRail website to see what they had, and I did see one of their boards as being able to work with color-position light signals. My question now is, how many of these boards will I need to buy? I have nine (9) signals, 6 of them pole-mounted and 3 dwarves. Here is the console where I currently control them using an array of DPDT switches:

SignalControlConsole.jpg

The ones on the top row are for the signals that have both top and bottom marker lights, the rest are for the standard 3-position signals and enable the following aspects: Dark; Stop; Slow Approach (yellow, no marker); Approach (yellow with white marker); Slow-Approach-Slow (green, no marker); and Proceed (green with white marker).

P.S. TomO, I just read your posts - looks like you did ok with the surgery!👍 Ah yes, the discharge blues: I remember after I had my prostate surgery, the morning of the day I was supposed to be discharged, the nurse came in and said the hospitalist just needed to sign some papers and I'd be outta there. Wife showed up to take me home; we waited, waited, had lunch, waited some more. Finally by late afternoon the hospitalist gave the all-clear and I was able to leave.

* * *

Gotta get back to work now, have a nice day!

Troy,

I had my thyroid removed in 2011 along with many lymph nodes in the throat. I was in the hospital 5 full nights.

In 2015 I had the throat scraped again and 3 nodes removed. Outpatient surgery and kicked out of recovery around noon and spent the night in a nearby hotel room. Checked the next morning by surgeon and sent home.

In 2018 again had the throat surgery to remove the nodes. outpatient surgery that turned into 3 nights in the hospital.

For my thyroid and additional node surgeries I have never had drain tubes. My gall bladder surgery I definitely did.

Biopsy before all surgeries confirmed cancer or the procedures of removal would not be done. It’s called papillary cancer, and supposely is the mildest kind of cancer to get. Still deadly if untreated. I got tested (before Covid) every 6 months. This 2022 surgery was talked about for the summer of 2020 but Covid got in the way. It was not emergency surgery so the County Health department prevented the local hospitals from performing surgeries like this. I am still waiting for the Hospitalist and Terry can show up for a 2 hour visiting window starting at 11am CST.

I all cases the radiation treatments were terrible but nothing compared to what I have seen chemo do to folks. I am very fortunate that I have had excellent care providers and super great insurance.
