Good Morning all!

It's 39, cloudy and a bit muggy with a high of 54 today. "Fool's Spring" I think the old time Minnesotans call it. But I did put my thyme and rosemary plants outside. I had hoped to winter them in the garage. I think the rosemary is gone, but the thyme is showing new green leaves!

Q U E S T I O N : Has anyone used the rattle-can textured spray paint? I would appreciate any tips or advice as I am thinking of using this.

I am putting in a coal trestle (Walthers 933-4093) and using the included berm.

I am thinking of spraying the berm with a stone or pebble spray paint and then gluing on ballast rocks. ANy thoughts appreciated.

I have had excellent results using the AK texture products. Specifically the Asphalt and Concrete. Very easy to use and there are lots of YouTube videos if needed.

Good morning all!

Much later for me than usual. Was up at the same time but had no internet this morning. We finally got it back around 9am. Not sure when
it went out origanally but the text on the phone came in a little after 4am. I guess I could of gotten on with my phone but I really hate viewing
the forum on such a small screen. Anyways, we are back to our lightning fast fiber connection.

A very foggy morning out there. Currently 42F with an expected high of 49. We got some rain overnight into this morning as well. I haven't ventured out on the back deck to see how much but the streets when I took my daughter to School this morning had some pretty good puddles. Clouds will be with us for the next couple of rainy days.

Not much else going on other than some laundry.

Have a safe day everyone!

I told everyone here that I would be going into the hospital soon, but I didn't say why. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 2 months ago. The last 19 weekdays I've been going for radiation treatment. That's every day, no weekends for the last 19 days. I have 9 more days to go for a total of 28 days. The actual treatment only takes about 10 minutes. That's the easy part. Getting ready for it is one big pain. Your colon must be pretty much empty. Your bladder must be full. These are the parameters that have to be met every day at 1:30 pm. If these 2 requirements are not meant you go home and come back another day. This is not easy. It creates a lot of problems. Thank God I only have 9 more days to go. The doctor tells me the success rate of being cured 95%. I don't feel sick at all, I actually feel pretty good but the daily parameters that must be met take their mental toll on you. This is where I lay every day at 1:30 pm for about 10 minutes. Swal
Sorry to hear this!

My thoughts and prayers are with you as well.

George,
Best of luck to you. You take very good care of yourself and I'm sure get regular checkups. You'll beat this with ease.

Prostate cancer is just one of the most common cancers us men get as we get older. Not all of us, but most of us. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I inherited my mom's fathers genetics. When he passed at 102 there were no signs of prostate or any cancers. An insect bite or a fall off a ladder will probably be my downfall.

Prepping......once the starving hoards realize you have food you will be the target. Unless you have a defensive perimeter, training, and more shooters than they do, it's just a matter of time.

If the EBT system ever goes down for a couple of weeks, online payment systems go down, or a disaster prevents grocery store replenishment......the fun begins.

Fortunately, I've got a couple of retired Marines (one is actually a Navy Corpsman) in my building. They might be old and slow, but they haven't lost the urge to protect and defend. ;)

Found a Jerry Can style 6gal at Meijer this morning. Thought that would do, but looking online at the options, I saw that Wally World had the 7 gal blocks for a good price. I had these before back in my Libertarian prepper days.

Checked the bleach situation, and we only have scented bleach on hand. So I got a small jug of basic bleach to disinfect the jugs after their washing out.

That's a week's worth of drinking water for our family.

Next week, I'll start on expanding food.

I don't remember the 'bladder full' requirement though, nor did they put tattoo's on me.
ctclibby I'm having this done at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt Kisco NY. My wife was a nurse there for 28 years. The actual machine is much bigger than the one in the photo. It has 3 big arms that rotate around you for about 5 minutes. They tell me the bladder has to be out of the way and for that to happen it has to be full. If it's not, they tell you to go drink more water and we'll try again in 30 minutes. If you have any gas in your system, they send you home. I start drinking water about 11 am so there's no extra hanging around time not having a full bladder. I help build one of the parking lots there years ago when I was a member of Local 235. There has to be enough parking for 1000 cars and it's always hard to find a spot to park. There are a lot of sick people around these days. Swal

George, praying for you here!
Chad, TB is not just the log in on my end, but often [probably getting swamped] will be unable to fully load pages and just up and crashes. Not just there bur the Reaper Miniature page also suffers from it.
You may have another issue. Maybe browser incompatibility or something. After I posted yesterday I went to TB and looked around a bunch and had no issues at all. I’m not in there often but never see issues I’ve I get past the gatekeeper. That I remember at least.

Just rambling

You may be right, I ran my spybot last night, hopefully that will help.
And Steve, On the rattlecan texture, I've actually used it on some gunstocks for folks over the years. Like any paint, make sure you have a clean surface to spray. It worked well for texture, I am very curious on your results.
Around here, it's 71 and overcast, supposed to get a bit warmer today. Started off sleeping in the recliner last night and woke up to a nature call around 230, and decided to try the bad. I guess it felt good, I slept for almost 9 hours! A bit stiff this morning, but very encouraged.
You guys all have a good day.

KATO has a ton of specials livery locomotives in N in N American rail. Hopefully they do these.
I don't do a lot of N American rail. Mostly Japanese and German/Austrian/Swiss/Other Euro* stuff. But I do have 4 Union Pacific (because that's what we see here) locomotives and a bunch of intermodal well cars and a few flat cars with things like Semi trailers and stuff. I'm kind of a sucker for containers -- especially from Japan.

Here are my 4 -- 2 have special liveries and if I get more N American it is likely to be UP and with special liveries... These are all KATO with "factory" installed TCS decoders.

* I have a Hungarian/Austrian Taurus locomotive that runs on a line that goes between those two countries and is a joint venture railroad. And I have one special livery that I think is a Dutch railroad or one of the 3rd party railroads based in the Netherlands. It is a Minitrix Van Gogh special livery. I'd be interested in getting some Scandinavian (Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish) stuff but there is not that much in N and I wouldn't be opposed to some Dutch stuff and Polish stuff on my railroad and even a wayward Italian or French locomotive (but probably more likely some rolling stock as that crosses borders a lot and can be found in mixed long distance trains) would be welcome if I got a good deal on it (and I was in a buying mode).

Swal, I wish you great recovery. That's no fun and every man's nightmare. You're healthy and have a strong will so that will help you.

My dad passed about 3 1/2 years ago from prostate cancer. He was 2 months shy of 86 and had lived with it around 5 or 6 years IIRC. From what I remember, the doctors wanted to treat and watch before being more aggressive. They put him on a testosterone suppression regime, which basically put it in remission for about 3 years, before it broke through and started growing and spreading again. He did some chemo after that but he didn't bear it well and decided to just let it take its course. He lived another couple years but got weaker and weaker as it spread into is bones. He didn't suffer that much, from appearances and what he described, until more near the end and then it was mostly just lack of strength and he started to get more confused. He passed at home after a short hospice care phase.

My mom's dad passed of prostate cancer in his upper 80s. Her brother had it in his 60s but he had surgery and had it removed and is doing well in his early 80s. Besides my dad I don't know of anyone else with history of it on my dad's side. There could be, I just don't know.

I try and do what I can to keep the prostate "healthy". Daily selenium, Lycopene, and some other anti oxidants, and, while this is most important when you're younger, regular "bed time" activity to keep it cleaned out is recommended. (Especially when you're young, which I am not). Trying to convince the wife of this is a different story.

We'll see how I end up. I have otehr issues like weight and stuff that I need to do better at.

Speaking of which, I've been doing the intermittent fasting for years -- at first it was 13-14 hours between evening meal and morning meal and for the last few years I try and hit 16 hours between even meal and morning meal. When I moved to 16 hours, at first, I lost some good weight. I was also a bit more strict on diet but the fasting was the biggest change. However, the stress with the house, and now unemployment and bank issues with the house from that unemployment, and a lot of related stress, has brought the weight back and more. Besides stress (which causes the body to store fat in anticipation of lean times coming, which evolutionary-wise, (stress) was an indicator of coming bad times), the stress has led to bouts of bad eating discipline. Having said that, based on Swal's post about the fasting, I decided to do some.

This past Monday I ate breakfast, and until this morning had not eaten again except for a spoon or three of olive oil daily and my normal supplements, and lots of water. Yesterday I also took a large glass of an electrolyte mix called "Liquid IV" that we had -- my daughter has been using it with her swimming and water polo training. I've gotten in good walks two days but on yesterdays walk was feeling a lot weaker and less energetic than the day before and than normal and I don't want to get low on electrolytes.

Today I ate a breakfast though a bit smaller (a couple bites of sausage my son cooked, a couple bites of cheese, half an Apple, a few Spanish olives, and my non-sugar high raw cacao powder and ceremonial cocoa based hot cocoa (good for the circulatory system). I won't eat lunch but for supper I'll eat an avocado and maybe a tomato as we have a bunch that need to get eaten. And a spoon of olive oil. Tomorrow I will fast again, just drinking watermelon all my normal supplements, and a little olive oil, and Saturday I'll go back to my normal regimen of intermittent fasting, trying to be super strict on simple carb/sugar avoidance. For spiritual and religious reasons I've been fasting every Sunday (Saturday evening meal to Sunday evening meal) so I will do that again and then my normal regimen will start. But in a couple weeks I may try a fast-week again like I did this week. So far I am down about 7-8 pounds from where I started at the beginning of the week. A lot of that is the bowels and the whole bowel system getting empty and loss of water weight (when you're only drinking water it goes through you fast -- I've never peed so much in my life). But a couple pounds of it is probably real fat loss from the lack of eating calories and the walking increasing calorie burn.

Overall this week I didn't feel much hungrier than I do normally with the intermittent fasting and it's not hard to just ignore the feelings and they go away.

Anyway, that's the report on this side.

Prepping. You don't just prep for the apocalypse. You may have local disturbance in your area, or a natural disaster like a hurricane or storm of the century, etc. And you may just become unemployed for a long time and need to support yourself and family.

Water:

You don't just want to store water. You want a week or two's worth of water stored. And you want some short term means of purifying water on the go. But you want something like a Berkey table top filter system with the cabin ceramic and silver filters and the add-on heavy metal filters. Berkey got in some trouble because of making claims that they legally were not allowed to (even if they were probably factually correct) but there are some other companies that have stepped in and also make replacement filters that they don't make claims for and aren't in trouble.

These sorts of filter systems can take ground water etc and make it potable. So you can make water for drinking over the long run. We used a Berkey system for all our drinking water since or kids were born until we moved into the new house. Here we have a filter system on the house water that is about equivalent so no need. But we have our Berkey system as a back up and as pat of our "prepper" plan.

Food Storage:

Slowly work up to having several months of canned and dried goods. Stuff that you normally eat anyway. And use it regularly so it gets cycled and refreshed. If you lose a job or there are local disturbances or natural disasters, you'll be glad you have food.

I won't talk about "firearms" but just say this: "Between guns and butter, guns win, because if you have the guns, you can get the butter".

Medical. Store medical supplies for both day to day and emergency use and learn how to use them. Keep a supply of various pain relief pills as well.

Cash reserve. Store a cash reserve at home and also slowly build up some precious metals. Don't go all in or hog wild. Just slowly add to your reserve and cache over time. In a true apocalypse situation the stuff you'll be able to barter with are ammo, food, medical stuff, precious metals. Your paper money will be worthless but precious metals always gets attention.

get to know your neighbors and make informal groupings and agreements on cooperation. At our last house (same neighborhood, different streets), a bunch of the men met occasionally outside when working and we'd talk about what to do if there was a SHTF situation. Knowing your neighbors in advance can make the cooperation needed when it happens more likely. Be like a Boy Scout -- Be Prepared.

I agree with @santafewillie that I'm not that worried right now about unstableness in the US. There are issue but nothing that is going to lead to SHTF now or soon. There could be local disturbances though that could impact you. Long term there could be a disintegration of society. There are certainly the seeds of it. Which is why I say, don't panic, get a long term plan of preparedness, slowly work the plan, and Be Prepared.

And if you don't have firearms, re-evaluate that decision. If you do but don't know how to use them learn. Even if you decide you don't want a firearm, get firearms training, and some periodic practice. It won't magically appear in your brain if you ever need it. You need to learn how to use an operate a firearm, and be comfortable with it. That's all I will say. Not trying to make this political in any way.

Does this mean that you are finally going to make the move that you have posted about???
We are working toward that. Need to find a place that suits us. Plenty of buyers here. Looking at Slower Lower Delaware, or Eastern Shore as possibilities...We have been in this house for 40 years now, lot to go through, sell, junk or store.

Since I'm feeling better and only have 5½ weeks of physical therapy remaining, I'm starting in the basement, while the wife finds the paperwork.

I wasn't certain how I was going to get another pistol in my display cabinet and I tried re-arranging them so I could get them to all fit. Space wasn't having any of that. I ended up putting them back where they fit best before the newbie came along.

I ended up placing two new mounting pegs in almost the only space left in the cabinet. But facing the opposite direction of the rest of the entire collection. Sticks out like a sore thumb, but whaterya gonna do? Just to take a photo of all of them, the Military Walther P99 is in the left bottom corner just sitting on the grip and back of the slide. That one isn't for display, it was just to see them all together at once.

This cabinet used to be full of pre-, war-time, and post-war Walthers. Some were very valuable from the pricing I see on Gunbroker for some identical, and some comparable firearms I owned. That shipped sailed years ago though and the Walther side is down to eight examples, and eight examples of other brands.

Note the wrong-way Walther:

Kato makes some of the best affordable intermodal rolling stock. when I was doing N scale I had a ton of their Maxi Is and Maxi IVs.

Now I have switched to HO I have purchased around 10 sets of their Maxi IVs. They roll and track like a dream! Only problem is they
haven't done a run in 5+ years and they go for an insane amount on the secondary market.

What if you switched the new one with the stainless PPK to it's left? It looks like it could be close.
GREAT display btw.
