That's not dust on the pics below. It's snowing again... From nice and sunny and warm feeling (despite being in the low 30s) this morning to snowing this afternoon.

IMG_7416.jpegIMG_7417.jpeg

That red dirt has made it here in the last half hour, but our winds are still just nudging 40 mph. It's currently 80°.
It is 7:30 pm here in west Texas, and the air is so thick with red dirt you can cut it with a knife. Winds have been 45 to 50 mph all day. I did not go out to check my mail. You can smell the dirt/dust in the air. I didn't even go out to the train room. Sky looks like it is a cloudy day, but clouds of dust, not moisture. I changed the water I have outside for a couple of outdoor cats because the bottom of the bowl was solid with dirt. I've never had to do that before. Supposed to be nicer tomorrow...........I certainly hope so.

Take care....John

Good evening. It's 69 and clear.
My errant laptop sleeve is still in Austin, TX. It hasn't moved in many days, and it was originally supposed to have been delivered today. That has been updated to tomorrow. I really doubt it's going to go from Austin, TX to central Florida overnight, but I guess it could happen.

Good Evening All. Still 70° and cloudy. The wind finally stopped around 6:30, but the dust that John and I have been posting about is still settling. For those who have never experienced a West Texas dust storm, here's the view earlier today from the train shed door.
1742003334262.png

It's kind of like the smoke from the massive fires, except it's red and settles once the wind stops. The settling will happen overnight.
That's the garden with it's walk-on boards (so I don't sink or leave footprints in the freshly tilled soil) in the bottom of the picture. Barely visible are the onion plants at the very bottom of the picture. We get these dust storms once or twice a year, not always as severe as today's. It's probably unhealthy to be outside breathing this stuff, but I took one for the team when I walked to the train shed. I did have my particle mask on.
Good Night.

I'm up
Oaty meals have been consumed. Coffee of the day is brewed, a Guatemalan Antigua. I don't think we have tariffs vs Guatemala, but I haven't checked twitter to see.

I may nap in a bit. You never know with coffee. Sometimes you gotta poop, sometimes you gotta nap. Doing both at once is not advisable.

I don't know if it's nationwide, but our local Steak-n-Shakes have removed the host/hostess, and cashier, and you have to order from a kiosk. Then you wait for the number of your order and take it to your table. It eliminates at least three employees, and their prices still have gone up.
I used to go there for the service, and making me do three employees' jobs while paying more money means it will be an exceedingly rare instance before I return.
Our Steak-n-shakes never had a host or hostess and we have been told at the counter you must use the kiosk. You get a number and they will bring the food to the table after you post your number on a springy thing! We have gone twice since Covid and I see no reason to go back

Good morning all. A sunny day is forecast???
Flo. A mocha coffee please. Oh ! a blueberry muffin as well.

I am expecting a package from over the pond. According to the tracker it has been received in a centre over the pond (It doesn't say where.). They received it 6th March. It is still there?

Farnley Viaduct Leeds It was nearly five miles long ending at Leeds Central Station

Good morning from a damp So. Central Wisconsin. It rained, then it poured and then it poured somemore starting at 11:15 last night. When it’s light out I will go and see what hit the west side of the house around 1 this morning. We had wind gusts supposedly into the 70 mph range last night. The weather app say 1.83” of rain received overnight. I came up from the cave around 1:15 this morning after being jolted awake by whatever hit the house and Terry was sitting watching some movie totally oblivious to the rain, winds and thunder. Now that I write it, I do not remember seeing any lightning flashes. Right now it’s 53f degrees but only going up to 56 with severe winds with advisories all day

My area of Wisconsin in the restaurant business has signs for help everywhere. Other than an occasional trip to Culver’s drive in for a concrete mixer we do not eat at the national chains that often. UNLESS the grandkids had a choice where to eat. Terry and I do eat out more than we should as we both know our way around the kitchen and outdoor grills very well. A normal week for us is a Friday night Wisconsin fish fry, either served in the place or pick up for home. We try to vary the Friday places but there are a couple places we may hit up every 1/4. Thursday mornings or more recently Wednesday mornings is breakfast out and we prefer dives, mom and pop or Greek ownership places. Again there are 2-3 places we will hit multiple times a year. We will travel 90 minutes from home to try a new one. Depending on the season (non hockey) we will travel with another couple if the places are outside Madison. If the college hockey season is going on we will meet coach and his wife at a nice place on Monday evening where he won’t get disturbed. If hockey season is over we will go out 1 night at random, generally to an ethnic place. High end, brewpub or a bar and grill does not matter to us AS LONG as we get served at a table! If we are going out we want to be served. Terry tracks all expenses as it’s very easy with my Capital One card. It breaks all our expenses into categories so she follows it including trains. Restaurant prices have definitely climbed but our Friday night fish fries have almost doubled since Summer with most of the increases since the election in November! No blame just stating a fact. Last night we went to a place we do go back to about 4-5 times a year. Normally with 20-25% tip around $40. Last night with 20% tip $72.00 because Terry with her meds cannot have a beer and I prefer a soda. That was a $7 savings with no beer as the beer price went from $4.50 a bottle to $7. It is what it is and as long as we can do it we will.

Today! The #1 Badger women play at 2pm on campus to advance to the Frozen 4 in Minneapolis next weekend. After watching the opponent Clarkson Thursday on campus I see no reason the Badgers shouldn’t advance but you never know. They play the games for a reason. Regular season games on campus are always sold out but it’s general admission except for the suites and you sit where you want. We have basically had the same seats though since 2015. Our assigned NCAA seats are 2 rows higher in the same section we always sit, just luck! The daughter and family will be sitting with one of the assistant Athletic Directors family in the University suite above our section!

Trains this morning depending on what I find out side.

Enjoy the day

Good Morning All!
32F @74% overcast with dusting of white. Day highs to 49F , nights low 30's/high 20's through next Friday.

Woke up yesterday and had bright light coming in the window. Geesh, thought I, daylight already and over slept. P'd, and looked out. Lots of light was reflecting off that big moon, then off of the 1" of new snow. Bright enough to shoot! That was 0330 and just decided to stay up.

Boy, y'all with the storms ... good luck. It apparently is not our turn yet. Usually get big wind end of March so that is coming up fast.

Beer: only one for me is Molson Canadian @ about 34F. Is 5% or better alcohol and darn tasty. Used to drink Kokanee which came from the brewery about 70 miles north of us until it started getting brewed in Milwaukee. Was 7% or better before that and dropped to 4% without that Canadian 'bite' the imports seem to have; in other words, bla.... Never have found a IPA or Craft Beer that was any good. Tastes like medicine to me.

Fry's - used to be Micky D's until they changed the grease many moons ago. Would go there just for those - never mind the $0.75 dbl cheese burgers. Now days, if we are out - Zip's Drive In with Bacon Cheeseburger. Since I found the Air Fryer and started playing with it, we don't get out much more unless it is one of our 'get ya butt outta the house' loops. Found that frozen fry's/tot's are better if you spray a tad of Canola Oil on, then a dash of Onion salt. Have a fry cruncher for those fresh potatoes, need to soak them in water for about an hour then into the smoker for about 20 minutes to dry them, then apply the oil and salt and get to it. Still do not like air fried meat as it don't get to 500F to sear. Makes no sense to sear in the pan then put in the AF, as once both sides are seared - ready to eat anywho! Pan, Air Fryer and smoker - what more do you need?

Our local Rosauers finally got the complete redo finished end of January that started middle of last summer. Floor is flat with no land mines or electrical hanging down. Their prices are still high, so if we know we are gonna spend $100, off to Idaho we go. Talked with the Deli manager Opal last night for a bit. February Deli was $2M for the month - got them 1st out of the 24 stores. They also added a sub-contractor for Sushi - $15K~ a week which is the store's 50% of the profit split. Deli is laid out better with more fun stuff. I do have to admit that the store is now more shopper friendly with wider isle ways and shorter shelf height for those with vertical challenges. I did find out something that don't make sense ... to me at least. Rosauers does not own the property or building - $400K month lease and is responsible for anything needed done; inside or outside. For a store that turns $4 - $6M~ a month - go figure!

Willie: been following your layout thread. Have not seen a "Willie's Place" or "Old Coot" drive-in / bar. In the works or did I miss it?

Good morning all!

Happy Saturday.

Its currently 55F, and that looks like our high for the day. Strong storms moved through the area last night around 11pm. Lots of lightning, very windy and heavy rainfall. The dog was a mess and was up for quite a while after that. A quick yard and neighborhood survey indicated some tree limbs down but nothing major. Power flickered a couple of times but stayed on.

Yesterdays dental appointment went well. I believe this is one of the first few times he didn't recommend any extra work. Usually he tries to pick my pocket for something.

Not sure what the day will bring yet.

Have a safe day everyone!

Good Morning All. Beware the Ides of March today. Partly cloudy and 55°, only heading up to 65° after that string of 80°+ days. A couple of cooler days and back to the 80's on Monday. Up & down from there with some cool days and some warm days. There is still a hint of the dust from yesterday, but I can't tell because it's still dark.

Maybe the high winds here and across the rest of the country are the result of the earth spinning faster to catch up to Daylight Savings Time???

Regarding that deer leg that I posted about yesterday, the reason that it was broken from the previous bone was because I believe it got run over by a plow out in my hay field recently. I observed one of the granddogs out there digging earlier in the week.
Yesterday, I did a little more mowing and hand-watered parts of the garden before the wind picked up around noon. Wind was about 2 hours ahead of the dust storm, which lasted about 3 more hours. Today I will retrieve any items blown asunder, and pick up the metal lawn chairs. Got to bring in a supply of firewood since it is forecast to get to 40° tonight and tomorrow.

Yes, I did brave the dust storm to go out to the train shed yesterday. I picked out figures and added them to the sidewalk surrounding John's Place.

This is what it will look like next to the neighboring structure on the layout in a not yet completed area.

Oh yes! The mortar on the other three sides came out a little better than the first.

Troy - I can't read the Wapo story regarding Steak N Shake due to their firewall. I ain't giving them my E-mail address either, so I'm not sure how using beef tallow makes them political??? The Italian sausage is probably a healthier choice anyway, but I doubt that the Kraft Mac & Cheese is healthier than the fries.
Tom O - Nothing wrong with being a non-beer drinker. Y'all save a lot more money than I do!;) Although the price of soft drinks in the grocery store are approaching the cost of beer unless you find them on sale. Most but not all eating establishments that I frequent that serve draft beer still charge $4-$5 for a 20-22 oz mug.
Louis - I agree that businesses should stay out of politics, but I have never boycotted because of it. Except Bud Light, which I never bought anyway. Does that count as a boycott???
Terry - It's been my observation (from personal experience and reading), that prices have gone up in all dining establishments across America.
Hughie - Those all look like excellent additions to your layout.
Mike - The food to go industry down here is thriving but still not as great as dine-in. It was helped by a new Texas law in 2021 that allowed eating establishments to offer to-go alcohol with meals.
Patrick - Its only fair that we send our dirt to you, since you send your cold fronts to us!

Besides being the Ides of March, today is also International Eat an Animal for PETA Day (or EATAPETA). I guess that is where eating and politics cross.
Everyone have a great Saturday and enjoy the weekend.

Boycott... Makes me think of the old saying "cut off your nose to spite your face" I watch movies and listen to music from people who do crazy things. If I like it, I like it, whatever it is.

Bud Light, which I never bought anyway.
I wouldn't bother with Bud Light if I were you. It is an ok beer, but as a Heineken drinker I doubt you would enjoy it. I like most any beer that doesn't have a fruity taste.

Which reminds me. Guinness opened a brewery in Baltimore. In 2017 they came out with a new beer, Baltimore Blonde. I was excited, a pale ale from Guinness! But no... It has an awful fruity taste! WTF were they thinking? No wonder they shut down in 2020.

International Eat an Animal for PETA Day
That sounds disgusting.

But I'm a meat eater and I always will be. I wonder how many people would starve if we suddenly stopped eating meat.

I had 5 Guys Bacon Cheeseburger for lunch today with fries. The burger was great, the bag the fries came in needed an oil change by the time I got back to the shop!
Old fryer oil will do that. Food fry's clean when the oil is fresh when it's in the food it needs changing. If you can find out when a restaurant changes their oil (usually a Thursday or Monday) you be able to see and taste the difference.

Good morning...Rain today = train room, see what I can get done today.

For those that give a hoot: While I still have time on my lapsing WaPo subscription, I'll pass along a gift article. this link should get you to page without issue. they may ask for email, but it shouldn't be required.

As for me and boycotts: Never bought a Tesla, never will. Target is getting it from the non-MAGA crowd. But Target stopped carrying a lot of the brands (or off brands) I purchased there. So I stopped going. The timing worked well though. I also boycott most churches now that I'm no longer photographing weddings. No reason to go and temp the various deities. ;)

Today is tax/bookkeeping day for last year. My business isn't big enough for a bookkeeper, so I wait until the wife growls and then spend a day downloading bank/cc statements, chasing around the foreign sales details, etc and making a spreadsheet of expenses. Last year wasn't a great year. Spent too much educating myself with things that didn't pay for themselves. This year is nipping and tucking expenses.
