wish you all a great day!

Good Morning All. Clear and 54°, supposed to be 85° today. Some trees are beginning to bud out locally. Still due to have a high wind day tomorrow, with 30mph+ westerly winds starting around 3:00 pm. That will bring dust storms from the recently plowed cotton fields in West Central Texas around John's area.

Normal boring day yesterday, always some kind of tasks here on the estate. Today being Thursday is the weekly grocery/beer trek, we'll see what surprises that will bring.

I continued with the structure build out in the train shed yesterday. Added a post out front and then started on the windows.

Smalltown now includes their own window treatments. They recommend using Walther's Goo to install them, but I don't know!

My tube may have seen the last usage, and it seems that it's the only supply that I don't have a backup. I was able to do the front wall with what remained in the tube, and I used Hob-B-Tac for the rest of them.

I started to do the mortar work on the blank wall next. It isn't going the way that I planned, but it might be acceptable. Not sure where I strayed on this one.
IMG_0514.JPG

I think that I will buff it down a bit and see. This wall won't really be visible on the layout, so I may do it a little differently on the other walls.
Normally I could have done this structure in 3-4 hours in a single sitting, but I have been doing it in bits and pieces since I have gardening tasks to get done at this time of year.

Joe - Get healed soon. That's good news from Pathology.
Mike - You're right about people just tossing the water bottles. When I walk up and down my county road, I pick up litter about once a week, Empty water bottles outnumber aluminum cans about 2 to 1. They go into my dumpster and the aluminum goes to the recycle place.

Everyone have a terrific Thursday.

Good morning from Wisconsin. It is 30f degrees now with no wind and high 60’s guessed for this afternoon.

Terry’s feeling good and is following the restrictions they put on her. She was doing well enough yesterday that I went over to a friend’s house and we used his Lokprogrammer on a client’s ScaleTrain diesel that the light package wasn’t working.

It is now and will cost in payback 5 boxcars to be weathered for my friend. I haven’t decided how to handle payment from the client. I still think the client got sold a bill of goods and should have asked for a partial refund or returned it. False advertising chills my butt. The other engine for the same client from the same seller is a total cluster.

A silent DCC equipped Athearn Genesis that the light package also doesn’t work and after yesterday’s sitting on the programming track still does not. It has the old style Athearn bulbs and not LED’s. A brown mark on the resistor on the DCC board pretty much told us why when we opened it up yesterday. Again in my opinion this unit should have gone back the day I told the client the lights didn’t work and there is no speaker in the unit as advertised. But he said it was a good deal, which it will not be after I add the LED lights, new decoder and a speaker.

My sort of a plan for today is finish up on a friend’s last 9 box cars I have here that I have been using for fill in work. The wheels and trucks are done and the cars are all faded. Just some rust touching on the hinges and a spray of kickup. He doesn’t want much weathering. Unlike the stuff for another friend who models 1965, this guy models 1980 and no roof walks.

Well, fill in work won’t be needed based on my weathering schedule sheet and if I do I have plenty of my own equipment to weather. Or heck, I could work on my layout!

I have a few friends going to 2 different train shows this weekend. They purchased table space to sell equipment at these shows and did ask me if I wanted to sell some of my weathered equipment. I will give each 30 cars to try to sell. They will be here this morning. I’m hoping it works out.

Enjoy the day

Good afternoon all. A busy morning doing housework.
A large coffee and a double Scotch please, Flo. I shall sit by the window and watch the world go by.

Daughter in Law is visiting this evening, so an early dinner is the order of the day.

Shall be in the train room this afternoon.

Train on the Callendar & Oban Railway line. No information given as to whereabouts etc.. Love the scene though. Picture available in the domain.

What are your thoughts on charcoal briquets, like Kingsford? I've mostly used them. They do burn consistently. I had a neighbor tell me "The chicken breast is good, but the skin tastes like 💩 you should use lump charcoal" He was the stereotypical "grumpy old man", but I felt sorry for him and ignored his often-ignorant comments. He had just lost his wife, his kids all but ignored him and he was in poor health. He enjoyed talking (holding court) with all the young people that would come to our cookouts. For as long as they would tolerate him.

How did you like the coffee rub. Forgive me if you already said, I must have missed it of so.

Today being Thursday is the weekly grocery/beer trek,
What kind of beer are you buying?

I've been wanting to try Michelob Ultra.

Good morning all!

Currently 43F heading up to 68F. A nice day in store, but the winds will start to kick up later.
Already have high wind warnings posted for later today and into tomorrow. A threat of severe
storms is also forecasted for tomorrow evening.

Volleyball game tonight is away. They play for the regional championship. Dinner will be out on
the road somewhere. We are the only game tonight, so it should start on time.

Not much else going on, which is good.

Have a safe day everyone!

Good mornin' crew from sunny Cheyenne. It's 33, headed for a high of 60 and low tonight of 35. Winds are from the N @ 4 gusting to 10mph. No precipitation in today's forecast but looking for colder temps, high winds and possibility of snow tomorrow and into Saturday.
Except for just a few odds & ends, the move from Texas to Wyoming is done. All the moving boxes are empty and flattened, clothes and assorted junk stowed, etc. Recycle bin was full for pickup yesterday. I'm sure it'll be full again next week.
Not much else going on today. Nurse Judy (ret) has hair appointment @ 1pm and maybe a bit of boutique shopping downtown. Cheyenne has a nicely restored downtown area, with a number of boutique shops, coffee shops, cafes and restaurants, lounges and bars. There's also a number of museums, the state capital and the Depot Museum. Legislative session wrapped up last week so downtown will be a lot quieter. There were a few protests during the session, but they were small and everyone basically minded their manners.
Continued working on detail castings. Got just a few more of this batch to prime and paint. Should get 'em wrapped up by the weekend.

Willie: Good luck on the brickwork. I've never had much success with making plastic look like bricks and even less trying to make it look like wood...

Y'all have a good day and take care.

Buy a 6-pack and give it a go, if you don't like it you can always use it to boil brats before grilling them. :D
Thank you, I use far more beer for cooking than I drink.

I will sample a taste or two of beer when I make corned beef on Saint Patrick's Day. I boil the corned beef, potatoes, and cabbage in beer. I found and Irish recipe for that. I never liked corned beef, but it is ok boiled in beer.

I'm still working on the case of Papst Blue Ribbon I bought last year. Saint Patrick's Day should finish it off.

My wife likes a beer occasionally. One every two weeks or once a month. I'll pour an 8oz glass for her and I finish the rest.

I'm already thinking of what kind to buy for my next case. On your recommendation it will be Michelob Ultra, thanks again!

I only use lump charcoal because Kamados work better in them.

Briquettes burn faster. And, if you get the ones with the lighter fluid soaked in, that affects the taste of the meat.

IIRC: you've got a kettle. They're fine as is, but you might search and see if there are YouTube grillers using a kettle with hardwood lump. If so, learn from them.

As for the rub, I went light on it. Next time a do a big cut like a brisket, I'll go back to my original rub recipe, and substitute coffee for the pepper at a 1:1. I was about 50% of that in this go. Wife didn't complain, other than saying it was less spicy than I normally do.

I'll also add the garlic powder back into the rub. This one was mostly salt (Kosher + Lowry's) and Onion Powder with some coffee.

You are correct sir, and I love my Weber Kettle.

I've used Kingsford charcoal briquettes for ... I had to think, since 1979. I started with a cast iron Hibachi grill. It was great to take to the beach. I graduated to a Weber in 1988 when I bought my first house. I never have and I never will use match light charcoal. Or any California approved lighter fuel. I've had good luck with my local grocery store brand lighter fuel, and it is half the price.

Thank you, but I'm too set in my ways to change now. I was only wondering what you thought.

I have a Dyna-Glo Wide Body Vertical Offset Charcoal Smoker. But I haven't used that since our last 4th of July party in 2022. It's too big and the Weber can be used as a smoker.

We also have a six-burner gas grill. My wife prefers that for the convenience of the electronic ignition.

Thanks for sharing all your grilling/smoking, I enjoy it!

If you're smoking: DO NOT USE LIGHTER FLUID

Too big of chance of the fumes lingering in the lower temps. I remember watching Pitmasters on the cable a decade or so ago. To end season 1 they had all of the pitmasters they were following head to one location to try their hands head to head with registered judges, and no other contestants.

One pitmaster who used Kamado grills arranged to borrow some locally so she didn't have drive hers across the country again. And the ones she got had ONCE been used with lighter fluid to start the charcoal. She didn't know that, and one of the judges commented on the lighter fuel taste on the chicken.

After I saw that episode (I had a dual Gas on one side, and charcoal on the other grill) I relegated the lighter fluid to starting the burn pit, and got a charcoal chimney for doing the slow cook charcoal side.

As for Beer... what's that?
I'll stick with Whisky. I'm digging the Costco Kirkland brand Canadian whisky. A good blend that I'm comfortable sipping on it's own or mixing in a cocktail. Had a Vieux Carre the other night with it.

I'm also getting this stuff from the local:
