Good Morning All. Partly cloudy and 75°, humidity of 89% and no wind. Today is forecast to be the last day with highs in the low-90's, tomorrow starts a 9 day run (probably longer) of near triple digits. There's a 0% chance of snow in the 10 day forecast and there's no mention of rain. I wish some of the excessive rainfall from April/May could have waited until now. Typical June though.
After the disappointing tax protest hearing yesterday morning, I actually started cutting up downed trees instead of just nipping branches up. First session netted me 4.5 days of heating wood, and cleared a path to the crop of trees that the neighboring farmer left me a few months ago. In other events, I had a scare that the pool was leaking water due to a puddle that formed at the lowest elevation on Wednesday. I got out my leak detection kit but was unable to find anything and called the pro. This is the guy who dons scuba gear and carefully goes around the pool with the leak detection dye. In the interim before he called back, the water disappeared. I now believe that I may have overfilled it with water on Tuesday and my wife (and probably me) caused excessive waves that sloshed over out of the skimmer port and pooled up at the base.
Today is the delayed weekly grocery trek. Pharmacy and Sam's Club are also on the destination list. Probably get my ears lowered as well. Wife will definitely be going since this week is Kroger's 25% off wine when you purchase 6 bottles. That's on top of the regular 10% off that we get for being Kroger Plus customers. 35% off a $20 bottle is $7, not bad.
Some activity out in the train shed yesterday, I retrieved the Chinese figures from the IPA bath. It mostly worked after scrubbing with a stiff toothbrush.
Black seems to be an issue even with scrubbing. I put them back in.
Meanwhile here's the result of re-doing the ground foam that washed away during the roof leak and monsoon rain last month.
I am also picking out a few figures from a different Chinese figure pack. Another gift from one of my kids or grandkids but I don't remember the occasion.
Patrick - I don't usually try any determinate Tomatoes since I also count on getting a fall crop from the same plants. That may be the only crop that I get from some plants this year.
Mike - What do you consider the perfect temperature of your pool? And when does it usually get there? My range is 80°- 88° which starts about Memorial Day. Wife prefers 83°.
No one ever told me about retirement accounts, I discovered them on my own and we realized how beneficial they could be. Mine started in 1981 when the private owner of our company sold the company and the profit-sharing plan was ended. Rather than paying taxes on money that I didn't earn anyway, I opened one of those new-fangled IRA's and rolled it over. Every time I got a raise at work, about 2/3 went into that account until the company (after a few more ownership changes) started a 401k program around 1990. Eventually I put 100% of raises into it until I got to the point that I reached the maximum contribution limit. That's when I opened Roth IRA's in both of our names. All went well until the Great Recession when I lost six figures and that set back my overall retirement by 3 years. I self-managed the accounts after I retired at 63 in 2015 and have done exceedingly well since then, without withdrawing anything other than RMD's since then. As someone here posted, compound interest is a wonderful thing.
Grizzled - I feel the same way regarding Facebook.
Todd - Our old fart property tax exemption goes into effect regardless of income. But it only applies to the homestead, which in our case is only 1 acre plus house. The other 13.5 acres does not get either exemption but it qualifies for the agricultural exemption since I grow/cut hay.
Troy - Wow! I hadn't heard the name Dan Sickles in at least a decade. Interesting character.
Tom O - Pensions. For a short period, our company was owned by a company that had a pension plan. That plan now pays me $254/month. Not much but it's also free money.
When the appointment person at my doctors office sets up the next one for me, I always back it up an additional week because of the intervals for testing and other things. My doc has a space in his office that the lab testing company uses to perform all tests for his and partner's patients, so that is one less thing I have to schedule, hence the delay in my scheduling the next appointment.
