If they followed the rules it wouldn’t be that bad.

Around here most solicitors need a solicitation license from the city.*. First thing I do is ask to see their license if they appear on the door and I answer. Most don’t have one and they disappear when I ask. A few try and argue with me. I’m not sure why solicitors think arguing with a potential customer who didn’t ask you to come by will make a sale.

If they tell me they’re just in the neighborhood and the neighbor “over there” with some generic wave recommended me I just laugh.

Residential cold calling is soul sucking because they choose to make it so. If they were polite and followed the rules and didn’t lie or make up stuff then it wouldn’t be soul sucking.

* the solicitors who don’t are political signature gatherers, missionaries and related, I think school kids selling stuff (no one gets mad at them anyway), and a few other edge cases. But commercial sales isn’t one of the no-permit-required cases except maybe the school kids I mentioned.
It's obvious you've never been in outside sales. Please don't take that personally. Hearing 100 "no's" for one "yes" day after day is tough. It takes drive and thick skin. The summer solicitors, at least the residential pest control ones, are just doing it for a summer job. If you notice most of them are probably under 22 following a script. They aren't professionals. They're just trying to get a signature, not build a relationship. This is another reason why I would never do residential. It's just make the sale and move on. On the commercial side you build a relationship and partner with the customer.

Commission sales is not for everyone. That's why there's a lot of turnover. NOBODY let's you make a lot of money because the job is easy,;)

You're a tech guy that can sit at a desk all day and pound keys. I could never imagine doing that. I tried inside sales once. Too confining. Outside sales allowed me to be a cowboy. Leave me alone to do my job and you'll know if I'm working by my weekly and monthly numbers. Unfortunately, I worked for a public company so after about 5 years they started a lot of micro managing. The final straw was when they put an app on our phones that tracked what time we left our homes, how fast we were accelerating, how hard we were braking and turning, if we exceeded the speed limit, and if we were using our electronic devices. Company vehicle and phones, but it didn't affect their insurance rates because they were self insured. I got tired real fast not being treated like an adult.

I actually have -- for myself. As a teenager I used to go hustle "Current Cards" to women in the neighborhood or go door to door with our gourds we grew. It's not as intense as these summer jobs but it's the same job.

But you've missed my point. These people doing this make it worse for themselves and more soul sucking by being dishonest and playing games instead of just being forthright and honest and being nice and polite.

Starting to play games and lie about the neighbors and that sort of stuff is. going to put walls up where you're trying to pull them down.

I've been debating with myself whether to post this, and decided to just be vague about it. Most everybody has an idea where I work.
So, a couple of weeks ago, there was a massive layoff where I work. People that had been there over 20 years were summarily fired. The reason given was the company wasn't doing well, and they were trying to keep afloat. Well, I guess that's understandable, though it could certainly have been handled better.
Yesterday, it was announced in the trade news our CEO had been given a $400k raise, bringing his new annual salary to right at $2 million.
And all the remaining employees got pissed, since we now know where all the money saved by those firings is going.
Today, the CEO sent out an email, letting us know that every Friday for the rest of the Summer, he would be giving us the opportunity to buy our lunch, in the form of hot dogs and canned sodas, for $5 each.
I'm sure y'all can imagine the reaction to that email.
I think they sold 3 hot dogs today, and those were to customers buying half-million dollar motor homes. Yes, they are spending 500 grand, and are still having to pay $5 for a hot dog.
SMH...

It’s not nice outside in So. Central Wisconsin. The steak on the outside grill is going to be done on the indoor grill

That's the script they've been given. It makes no sense to me either, but the cost to train them to be a professional would take half the summer. It makes it a summer "job" and definitely not a "career".

Just sitting here checking through the forum and the door bell rings. Young guy with an I pad and starts his spiel;
neighbor behind me just signed up with him for yard service for mosquitos, ticks, and other yard
creatures. Told him I'm all set and he keeps talking. Again I say "not interested" and he keeps talking.
Close the screen door and he keeps talking. Close the main door and here I am.

I believe that I am a fairly courteous person and I understand he is trying to make a living. Used to be I
would just stand there and listen to them babble on ad-infinitum. I still try to be courteous but he is
encroaching on my time-of which I don't want to spend any more of with him.

End of rant.
There is absolutely nothing I need to buy from door to door salesperson.

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those who disrobe before answering the door.

It's Troy again

Had a semi productive day. Laundry is done. Bedding is changed.

I realized that in the summer when we're wearing shorts, Ts and shorter sleepwear, laundry on fridays is only 2 loads, not 3 loads like it is in the colder months.

Painted some minis this morning/afternoon. Not a lot done, just one color for the armor. Need another week or so to get them finished. Also realized I'm burning out on the painting of minis. I need to do something different in the hobby world. The problem is, I still don't have a good track plan for my upper level, so trying to go to the next step is stalled.

Went to Penn Station for dinner. Still not dipping their sammiches in grease. As much as stuff costs in food these days, they're probably pretty stingy on the extra oil for cooking. 😜

Beverage tonight is the Mai Tai. I top mine off with Mango juice.

nice lamp BTW!

Illinois offered some kind of solar incentive and this Spring the solar salesmen were out crawling the neighborhoods for weeks
trying to sell solar panels. We have a ring doorbell so I can see on my phone who is at the door and I just don't bother to
answer any more. I just let the dog bark ferociously at the door and eventually they will go away. I did get caught by one when
I was working in the garage and he walked up the driveway, I had no place to go, so I insisted I wasn't interested at this time.

If it's anything like Jersey, they are persistent. The best way to end the conversation, is to mention the 20 year lien they place on your property, for the privilege of generating power for the provider. Then they know you know, and let you alone, if they should catch you outside.

Close the main door and here I am.
I think you handled it well.

We have a ring doorbell
I love my Ring doorbells and cameras!
I just let the dog bark ferociously at the door
Dogs are the world's best doorbell. The louder they bark the better!

Cold calling was how you built your territory.
I know firsthand I was a commercial tire salesman.
being honest, under promising and over delivering was my success formula
I don't need to know anymore to know you were extraordinarily successful for a long time. Slicksters come and go quickly. Honest men are the ones that last.

My philosophy was "Promise little, deliver a lot and always be true to your word."
Residential cold calling is soul sucking.
I have never done it. I can only imagine! God Bless you for your efforts.
Usually the main ingredient is some type of permethrin or pyrethrin. They are non residual, so once they are dry and you can't smell them they are done
Thank God we never had bedbugs! The first townhouse I rented after my first marriage was infested with roaches! It was the most disgusting thing I ever encountered. And I've seen a lot on the back streets of Baltimore, but not in my home! Thinking of it still makes me uneasy. I went to one of my light truck customers who had an exterminator business. He gave me a gallon of stuff from the back room. He said, "It's oil based, keep the kids away from where you spray" In less than two weeks all the roaches were all gone and I never saw another one. Always turn to a professional.

I may not be the "brightest crayon in the box" but I will find an expert who has the answer to my problem.

those who disrobe before answering the door.
That is not funny!

When I was a boy 10-12, I was a paperboy for the Baltimore Sun. I was a big boy I was already 6'1" in the sixth grade. I had one customer, an older lady 35+, I was only a boy she was old to me. When collecting for delivering the paper she would answer her door in a robe, that always opened. I can still see her flabby body! "No thank you, I don't need to come in for a soda, I've got to go!" Thank God I had already seen many pretty teenage girls' bodies, or I might have become a priest!
Need another week or so to get them finished
I look forward to the photos 😁

Holy greed Batman!

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those waiting to prank the next D2D salesman

It's Troy again.

Up at 5:30 this morning. Tried to sleep in, even if it was a light doze from 4:30 on

Road trip this afternoon for the niece's wedding. 2 hour one-way drive. Wedding, then drive back. Checking the weather, we may drive into T-storms on the trip there. Should be clear for the drive home.

sounds like the wife wants italian for lunch. So yummy breadsticks coming up!

Thought I should go get a walk in, checked the weather, and went... nah! I'm good.
BBL this evening.
