Morning all,

Currently 79° and clear headed for 102° later. Headed out to the office shortly and hopefully quiet when I get there. It is a typical short Friday. I may have to get a megamillions ticket. Won't win (never will), but fun to think I might. I only buy one, as that's all you need. No sense being really stupid.

Good morning all! 65 degrees heading for cloudy and 87. It's been a good, but very exhausting week and I'll admit I'm really looking forward to the weekend. We've accomplished a lot at work this week and still have a lot to do today. There are plenty of projects still to complete and I'm going to try and tackle more of them today. Nothing else to report really. Hope you all have a great day!

Good Morning All. Clear, still and a nice low 72° this morning. Not sure why it is only 72°, but it is and I ain't complaining. A/C's are off and the windows are open for a change. Still expecting 100° later on after just 97° yesterday.

Yesterday was a successful but frustrating day. The grocery store was a breeze, very few other customers, maybe because we got there about 30 minutes earlier than usual. No line at the checkout, while there were lines at the self-checkouts! The downside was that I didn't have any coupons, either paper or digital for any of the items that were on my list. I rarely deviate from the list and I don't buy just because there is a coupon available. The only exception is if I see something in the "manager's special" reduced meat shelf. Yesterday it was a brisket flat. The trip to Home Depot was a bust, as they were still out of pool chlorine. So across the road to Walmart I went. I hate this store with a passion, but I reluctantly go there infrequently. Had to dodge an employee wheeling around the parking lot in his wheelchair smoking a cigarette. Pulled up to the side, grabbed a convenient cart and headed around the corner to the garden center entrance. The gate was closed and locked! I abandoned the cart there and headed for the main entrance about 300' away. Once inside I had to make a return 300' journey back to the garden center where I found plenty of chlorine. Same brand as Home Depot, but 50¢ a gallon more expensive. However I had forgotten to get another shopping cart and had to make the 600' round trip back to the entrance. Got 8 gallons and returned the same 300' to the checkout and then out the door. Back the initial 300' to the car and I noticed that the gate for the garden center was now open and was manned by the guy in the wheelchair who was obviously on break earlier!

Frustrating later on when we went back to town for dinner. I had a car move from right lane to the left lane in front of me, to pass a truck, and despite having no one in front of them, it took them eight miles to complete the pass, going 6 mph under the speed limit. Then they remained in the left lane and I had to wait until the third lane began in order to get around. I couldn't even see the end of the line of cars behind me!

Thanks for the likes and comments regarding yesterday's post; Tom O, James, Steve J, Smudge, Dave B, Guy, Karl, Chad, Hughie, Patrick, Joe, Gary, Curt, Louis, Tom, Rick, Sherrel.

So the successful but frustrating day yesterday, continued into the train shed. I started to install a 4' LED fixture under the upper deck over the peninsula bulge and couldn't find the #8x1/2" wood screws that I had bought a few weeks ago for the job. Well, that took 35 minutes but I did find them. Got the fixture installed and I was then stymied getting the cover back on the fixture; even after duct taping all of the wires inside. The electrical tape was just not holding. The electrical tape wasn't sticking to the enamel-like finish on the fixture. Eventually I did get everything to align between the fixture base and cover with the lighting element, and it works. But what should have been a 15 minute job took almost two hours.
Here's another view of the area that I will add ground cover and scenery to over the next few days.

Tom O - I like your observation regarding all of the open lands in our country.
There are probably really good pizza joints around Austin TX that your son just doesn't know about. Mom & Pop type shops like the two nearest me in Sanger TX. There's a Dominoes there as well, but I don't consider that good pizza by any means. That may vary by location but I doubt it.
I have done both stress tests and like the chemically induced one better, but it does bring on some apprehension about using chemicals to alter the body's normal functions.
Jeff - It's a crap-shoot around here regarding Covid checks. Both my dentist office and dermatologist quit taking temperatures about a year ago, while my cardiologist and family doctor's office still do. Masking is optional at the dentist and none of his staff wear them until you open your mouth. They did that even before Covid. The dermatologist told me I could take it off once in the exam room.
Good luck with your recovery
Guy - Congratulations on post #1001. The vultures don't bother me. They sometimes hang out when I take my morning walk.
07-21-10 007.JPG

Dave B - Even on the main lines of BNSF around here today, there is evidence of waviness and up and down undulations in the track. So I don't let it bother me on the layout.
Curt - I like the grade crossing.
Louis - I am both saddened and happy about your friend Willy's situation. Your attitude is heartwarming.
Mikey - Looks like the legal system works in your part of the world.

Everybody have a great Friday. Stay safe and cool.

It seems like some folks enjoy controlling others progress on the highways.
Several years ago a I got behind a similar driver. After the 15 miles that he paced next to a farm truck on the divided highway he just happened to pull into the grocery store I was going to. As I was headed to the entry door I saw the young fool get out of his car and headed to the same door. I went through the automatic doors just ahead of him then stopped and checked the bottom of my shoe so he couldn't get past me. After a thourough exam of my shoe I took a step then checked my other shoe. I was getting the reaction I was hoping for. He was upset. After checking both shoes I took another step then stopped again to wiggle my foot in my shoe then turned and looked this guy right in the face. "Kind of annoying, huh?" He got the point.

Good morning all,

it is up to 60, headed for 80° I think. Full sun and light breeze.

Well, I took a bunch of photos last night then forgot my camera at home so no pics to post today :(

Will be working on one of my old Varney locomotives, I was able to repair the tender which fell on the floor a couple months ago, lost the truck springs and was able to get the right ones from Kadee.

Mikey - quite a story

Louis - wow. You always seem to do the right thing, however

Willie - sounds like murphy's law kicked in. Also, really like the scene you posted earlier today!

Ken D&J - you may have succumbed to temptation. Easy to do. "Revenge belongeth to the Lord"

Tom - curious about your son's business at Cirrus. I used to keep up on their company news when we lived nearby, they were always on the leading edge of innovation.

Curt - crossings look very nice. Your work really moves along at a rapid pace, it seems.

More later,

Dave LASM

Hey Everybody,

I've been keeping up with the posts, for the most part. I always enjoy many of the pictures posted, thank you!

I hope those who are not feeling well get better soon.

I've been in a "funk". The only thing I have been consistently able to concentrate on is work. Not even the Orioles 10 game winning streak has been able to distract me for long.
Now my sleep is disrupted, that almost never happens.
I have not seen my grandsons since the 4th. My boys are busy having fun, camp and boating. Enjoying life on the upper Chesapeake! That's all good and for the best. I miss them, they always take my mind off other things. We still have one more episode of "Stranger Things" to watch together. The strange thing is, I enjoy the show too!
My friend Willy who is still in the hospital is steadily improving. Since I took him a smoked chicken breast on the 4th he has been eating. He is eating well enough that they have removed the feeding tube. His health is not the problem. The problem is the drama with his family.
The more I learn about people living in his house (his wife, nephew, nephew's baby mama and their boy) the more bewildered I become. I suspect everything from abuse, neglect, theft, fraud to drug use. Willy and his wife are the innocent victims.
His wife is the sweetest lady, as gentle as a lamb, but not the brightest. A true stereotypical beautiful blond. Right under her nose Willy has lost two ford pickup trucks, smart phone, his entire gun collection, his checking account is almost empty and only God knows what else!
I've been trying to tell Willy what i suspect has been happening, but he trusts his nephew's baby mama. He believes all her lies. She acts like mother of the year. I suspect she is more like Ma Barker.
I would write a check if I thought it would solve the problems. The money I have given them has only fueled their madness. Only drug use can burn up that much money that fast.
I don't want to upset Willy, only recently has his depression improved.
Willy had a stoke over a year ago. I only recently found out he had been suffering with depression. I knew he had struggled with diminished mental capacity, but he returned to work. He just had trouble remembering things. I did not know how bad things were and he would never say anything, neither did his wife, until yesterday. She finally told me how much they have struggled since his stroke.
On the bright side, his mind is sharp again. I wonder if his out of control blood sugar had interfered with his mind?
As soon as i got involved i could "smell a rat". I know first hand the signs and symptoms of drug abuse. As much as I don't want to, I turned to the authorities. I feel have no other choices. If Willy gets mad at me, so be it.
No matter what, I'll be there for my friend when he gets out of the hospital. Stuff we can replace, I always have a "rainy day" cash fund. His health is most important to me now. But I can't let that bitch rob him blind before he gets out. Willy has some rare collectables that he cherishes. I only hope we can replace them if they are gone. I hope he has some insurance.
Before this is all over somebody is going to jail!
God help us all.
Sorry to vent, but this place is my only safety release valve.
Louis, vent all you want. Other then my wife this great forum and forum friends also is my safety release valve.

What you describe about your friend Willie is so common and so terrible. BUT, you can’t be there for your friend if messed up. Take a walk, read one of Troys books from online, do something you like besides trains but try to take your mind off your friend for awhile everyday Best to you

Purchased my first Mega Million lottery ticket for I think for sure the last 5 years but maybe since I retired in 2014 for the 7/12 drawing 5 lines for 10 bucks and per usual 1 number total! Before retirement at work there were 7 of us who purchased as a group for 5 lines of Mega weekly if it was over 50 million. We purchased 5 lines for every drawing of Powerball, but it was only a $1 per line back then

Good luck and if you win you have to buy us all breakfast for a week here at the diner, maybe that would make Mel smile

Good Morning!

It's supposed to be hot and wet today. - If I were younger, those words would describe the beautiful blond sitting beside me. At my age, though, they describe what I see when I look out the window.

The wife went to work, so it feels like a very good day to catch up on some modelling. That's what the plan is; plus, doing some vacuuming and clean this place up.

I suspect everything from abuse, neglect, theft, fraud to drug use. Willy and his wife are the innocent victims.
Louis - I was very sad to read you're post. I've had experience with extended family that are nothing more than selfish, greedy, thieving, no-good-for-nuthin hogs. After those experiences, those 'people' stay well away from me; I don't put up with that type of attitude. If this Willy fellow is you're friend, the best thing to do is tell him straight what's happening. I'm not convinced the authorities waste a lot of time on these matters, and don't do much about it.

I don't feel like spending too much time in the shop; modelling time awaits.
But, I'll leave a few photos of the Jasper steam engine display. This is called a 4-8-2 Mountain Type, built by the Canadian Locomotive Company in 1923. Apparently, there were more than 80 of these on the tracks back in the day.

Love the old steamer's, but I've never seen a round tank on the front of a loco before, the one above the light, can anyone tell me what it is or what it's for?

Good morning from the wetlands of So. Central Wisconsin. It was supposed to start raining about 2AM but I was already sleeping almost 2 hours by then. It has been a nice steady falling rain for the 2 hours I have been up and the TV guy I briefly turned on said this will stay until about 2PM and accumulate between 2-3” all across the viewing area. If it stays steady like it has been it shouldn’t cause us any issues.

DAVE, the son is going back into the air taxi business but with strictly family as his investors and his sister as his business partner. He was in this before and got out because he wasn’t the controlling partner and just felt he was being taken advantage of. He holds 61% of the business, his sister 30% and his cousin the balance. He loves his Vison Jet and went to Duluth to talk to sales, test the 7 passenger configured model and then to their financing group. He did arrive here last night about 11 and we talked some before I went to bed at 11:45PM. He was going to call Terry as there is a 5 hour difference. I figure around noon Terry will call me. Even though he didn’t ask me, I know we can give him a better interest rate then what he was offered. But it’s a really big nut and I feel the bottom is going to drop out fairly soon and the climb back maybe brutal. His uncle, my brother did review (as did I) his business plan and says it was extremely good. It was done by his MBA sister so it had better be good but my brother seldom is impressed by business things unless he is doing it. The son says he would prefer to keep his uncle out of this but will go to him if need be. So the bank of mom/dad maybe back in business after a couple year lull!

Health, I would say as a group in the diner, yes we have issues but overall we are doing pretty good. I feel ok 75% of the time and that actually is a great improvement. My cough is still there but considerably less, the headaches are rarer but the, light headedness is still almost every time I stand after sitting or laying down.

Masks, I had just (Terry too) stopped wearing the mask at Memorial Day weekend. The Tuesday after we started attending the IIHF Women’s International hockey tourney in Madison for under 18. That is also when the USA removed the testing for Covid protocols for entering the USA. We were sitting, mingling and eating with folks that may not have been vaccinated and of course we both got Covid. Was it that, maybe, probably but not necessarily. Terry’s Covid was similar to her previous bouts of pneumonia. Mine was much worst and I ended up with an infusion. The doctors tell me I am now experiencing the long term Covid effects. That and my weight, age and diabetes is why I qualified for the Covid research program I am now in. I wish I had been smart enough to have continued wearing the mask. My June and July have been medically miserable at times but livable for the most part.

Model trains, the want to be at the bench has returned somewhat! I have started weathering rolling stock again. Yesterday I replaced the batteries in my remaining ProtoThrottle and charged the ESU throttle. Today’s hope is I run some trains as I put in the drop bridge last night for continous running. I rarely since 2015’s initial building have I used it in the 3 locations parts of the layout have been in.

enjoy the day

Bruette/Louis-

This is the coffee shop and we are all here for all kinds of reasons venting is definitely one of the many good reasons. The comradery here is bar none anywhere else. So having said that you are in good company.

I feel you on your situation. Definitely not an easy ordeal. Just be careful to not hurt yourself or get so involved that you end up in entrapment legally or other. Take a step back and breathe. There are so many things that negative drug use that can cause a small situation even bigger problem than you realize. Alerting the authorities is probably a good thing for documentation especially if an investigator gets involved etc.

I have had to do something similar only in my case my friend was the "user" and his family suffered from his irresponsibility and violent ways. He could not help himself nor would he admit he needed help. After a few interventions and several 6 month rehabs unfortunately we couldn't save him from the pitfalls in spite of what we all did for him. He ended up divorced, losing all rights to access his family of 2 daughters and 3 grand kids and several extended family members. He had restraining orders placed on him as his violent nature was unpredictable and dangerous. He blames everyone but himself. There is an old saying; You can lead the horse to the water but you can not make the horse drink it. Nonetheless it was one the hardest thing we all went through. He was a dear friend of 11 years until this happened. I had to walk away as his family did as well. I am still in touch with the family and have been for years. He has not changed still very toxic. I am surprised he is not dead yet. I have not spoken to him in 15 years now. It is sad but I could not have that in my life as it was to taxing and unhealthy. It is one thing if the person improves another if the person has no regard to life and others. I have learned 3 things in life that I always watch out for in general. You can't fix stupid, crazy or evil. It cannot be corrected. Anyways I wish you well but please protect yourself and well being do not let it affect your life in the way it makes you unsafe, unhealthy or broke. Be careful.

My 2 cents.

Well, howdy there internet peeps.... It's Troy again.

Going to be quick...

LA is having their C-19 hospitalization rates increase, so they're looking at masking again. Their health comminission sets the rules based on the numbers they see. I like SoCal, but not fond of that city. I'm left of center so the politics aren't the issue. They are just tooo darn many stupid and rude people.

Stuff like people walking their dogs on the sidewalk (everyone has a frickin dog despite living packed in like sardines.) When wife or I would walk, they'd be on their right side of the sidewalk, with their dog on their left. Yes, the retractable leash stretched across our path. They'd make no attempt to pull the dog over to their side so two-way traffic on the sidewalk could continue by them. Then they'd dirty look or drop a "RUDE!" if we stopped to wait, or tried to step over the trip hazard they created.

It was usually ONLY when we were in the act of stepping over the leash that they'd pull the dog back. Really trying to trip us in the act.

So, it's a city with some really nice people, many, many more rude folks.

OK, more words to write.

Love the Marinette Tomahawk & Western RR box car! I have a few of them for my interchange...I do need to get them weathered though! Nice job!

There was a tragedy in the train room yesterday that I did not post about earlier

While I do not have a computer or TV in the train room the stereo was always on in the background. My 40+ year old stereo system may have passed on. The former sound engineer and still the son is now looking at it. Since I am back at the paint bench I need tunes.

Remembering I had another system to play the tunes that worked with the IPod or the IPod mini, I pulled this out. Music again filled the paint bench area yesterday and again today. I do prefer tthe bigger sound from a good speaker system but this will do.

Great, he is asking for my took kit and soldering iron, he will be performing surgery.

Good Afternoon,

Posting early today since I have a haircut appointment shortly. Today I just worked on scenery type things around the mine area. I should finish that tomorrow.

Thank you for the photo likes yesterday.

Louis- Sorry to hear about your friends family. It sounds like an episode on ID TV.

Mikey- What a waste of time. At least you got off.

Patrick- Good luck with the ticket! You could buy a house just for trains. A train house instead of a train room. :D

Willie- Thank you. Nice layout and 1:1 photos.

Dave- Thank you. Remember that I'm retired so it's not unusual for me to be in the train room 3-4 hours a day.

TomO- I listen to music in the train room also but on my cell phone.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Lots of people have been saying for 15 or more years that onerous password change policies actually create more security issues than they alleviate.

1) people tend to write them on a piece of paper, or keep them in an electronic list of some sort.
2) Because of the frequency of changes, people who don't write them down, often have to go through the password reset options, which enforces the same insane policies, like "has to have a special character" or "Can't be a previously used password" "cant have sequential numbers" "can't be too similar to a previous password" etc, etc... Therefore, the password reset option gets used so frequently, that hackers find ways to intercept the password reset emails... So they don't even need to try thousands of attempts to guess the password... they just trigger a password reset, and intercept the email.
There are more reasons, but those are the 2 that seem so painfully obvious yet overlooked.
My boss used. A clever trick I did catch on but as his PA I had an inside, anyway on his desk in a certain place he would place an item/s that then we’re his reminder for his password, not directly the word so not just say, pen, but it was the start of his password and if there was more than one of the item (hence me catching on) then the number was in the password, he would put sweets or things not too obvious, I have a complicated password with letters numbers and other, the other half had a similar password, with the same trick, sorry I can’t explain what it is, he is in information security and would be annoyed as it would make my password easier, he did say that a shockingly high number of people have the word password as password, by it self or with a persons name or the month if they are forced to change, and he has shocked any number of people by opening their computers with just ‘password’…… I think it was 1 in 10 people! NEVER ever use your birth date or your mums birthday either as they are are also classics. PINS are often date and month, \i wonder how many of you are feeling …..ooops.
Thieves also look on top of clocks, and under beds at the back for valuables. in side the toilet water is popular. especially apparently for drugs hoping to deaden the smell, and films often show air bricks are popular.
Banks ask for dogs and schools and family avoid those, an ex that you do not like is likely a good choice as no one thinks of them, and spelling the name backwards makes it harder for people watching you type to work out…okay leaving now.
