We leave homemade traps out all year. It's just a bucket with about 8-10 inches of water in it. Then a yard stick as a ramp, situated so one end of the stick ends up centered above the top of the bucket. Then dangle a bottle cap filled with peanut butter from the stick. The varmint falls in and drowns. You only have to reset it if the stick gets jostled too much. I've found 5 field mice in one bucket one day. Works great!
Ya, used something almost like that. Bucket with 2" pvc roller on top smeared with peanut butter near the center. Ya also have to give them a 'ramp' to get to the top of the bucket. They get on the roller, then go swimming. 6" of water looks to be enough with the smaller ones. We had a packrat once which was huge. Bigger than Willie's caught one; probably 1' in length. That one would sit at the top of the bucket and spin the roller while licking the butter off. Found that out as we were loosing PB with no critters in the bucket; so I stuck a camera close to see what was happening. I found out the rat was pretty much religious on visit times, so I went and sat nearby and waited. Gave it lead poisoning .

Well good morning from the No-kill fields of So. Central Wisconsin.

So students of modeling things! When a rat dies in a trap set by man, or figures out it can’t swim after being in a 5 gallon water filled pail, has MAN killed the rodents or have the rodents committed suicide? This will be on my mind off and on today!

A great day to fly per the son. 69 now heading to 80 and not a cloud in the sky. The route is Middleton, Wisconsin west following the WSOR rail lines to Prairie du Sac, Wi. Then north along the east bank of the Mississippi River to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, following the BNSF tracks. A u turn then following the West bank of the river south to Davenport, Iowa. Tracks on both sides of the river or close to the river. We then decide if we will have pizza a 1/2 mile from a airport about a mile west of the river and a bit north of St.Louis. He has stopped there before and it’s an easy Uber ride to what he says is great pizza.

Heading out to fly by 10, it’s 8:58 now. Enjoy the day

EDIT, Great background pictures Guy, well done

Good morning all

63 and cloudy. Woke up to 52 and dense fog. Supposed to be a perfect day in Minnesota, according to weather person Belinda who is right as often as not which would make her an average weather person.

Patrick - rough night? I was up a bunch, one of my teeth hurt a little (is scheduled for a crown in a couple weeks, is cracked) then had some weird dreams this morning about some people from the past also a couple old jobs. Weird. Have anything to do with the super moon?

Guy - the liftout must weigh about 10 pounds, can easily lift with one hand but usually use two. Already figured out the "hill" cover, actually a pile of rocks or rock outcrop, will be made from screen with a wood base which will sit over the handle. Piece of cake to build. Will cut out an oval out of my left over particle board, then cut out the middle so it sits on the lift out, then form the window screen material around it. Will be just big enough to cover the small handle, and will just set on there and will remove it when using the handle.

Here are a couple more pics of the progress:

IMG_2332.JPG

From this distance the lift out really blends in, even the handle is not that noticable.

Here are a couple people. The man in the suit is so glued down that I don't dare move him.

Good Morning all!
64F in Libby
85F in Olive Branch with a great light show with rain.

Ok, so you know the Oscar Mayer commercial with the hot dog vehicle? Figured that vehicle was for show only. Ya:

Taken a day ago, I22 East of Olive Branch an hour or so out. Showed Maria and she pipes up 'I have seen that a couple of times up North'. Geesh said I, why didn't you get a picture? I got the blond blink and let it lie.

MFA is a PITA at best. If you need to know the worker password(s) sitting next to ya, just open the drawer ( or look under the keyboard ) and get what you need. Strong passwords are best; 8 to 16 characters with cap(s) and non-alpha characters and numbers. If the IT guy in charge of the border router or firewall knows what s/he is doing, they will see a dictionary attack and drop the IP at the input. If 'the company' wants to secure the INSIDE of the network there are other bigger fish to fry. If you don't trust your employee's, you got trouble. Although I have seen engineers putting a wifi AP on the net drop at their desk just because they wanted multiple devices connected. Easy to fix, only allow MAC addresses you know to get DHCP address and gateway; give all others 127.0.0.1 as the default gateway. Ya, some engineers understand how the network works and might try to enter their own IP/Gateway combination. No problem, only allow specific IP blocks through the firewall. Does not fix everything, although it gives you a good start.

Todd, I think I read there are 7 or more of those around the country somewhere. I thought they kept them in Wisconsin.

Good Morning All. Clear and 75°, headed up to 103° later today. Yesterday only saw 101°; the usual heat advisory is in effect, although it doesn't extend north into our county. I guess that 101° doesn't qualify. Wind which was out of the north all day yesterday has shifted out of the east, although at 1 mph it is not providing much relief. The north winds that Chet used to send us from Montana were a lot cooler than these right now. While it is hot here, this is not the hottest July that I have records for which I keep for gardening history. July 2011 and July 1980 were both hotter, as were those entire summers. July 1998 is a distant third but we could approach that this year.

Yesterday's dermatologist visit was all clear; he was pleased and so am I. Disaster at Home Depot as they are out of liquid chlorine for the pool. I now need to look around and probably pay a lot more. I still have about a two week supply left, but I do not wish to switch back to the powdered stuff if I can help it. Last two years, the powder and tablets were in short supply and liquid was readily available. Just the opposite this year. Looks like gasoline dropped another 4¢ to $3.95/gal.

I invariably forget the new passwords when required and have to have the e-mail link to update again. It's a viscous circle.

Thanks for the likes and comments regarding the cold storage structure; Steve J, James, Jeff, Guy, Tom O, Dave B, Chad, Patrick, Karl, Hughie, Smudge, Joe, Curt, Tom, Gary, OB Ken.

No train shed time yesterday; too much else going on for this retired [?] person.
One of my favorite businesses in the outskirts of Charlottesville, Magee's Tire Service. That's Federal Cold Storage on the other side of the tracks.

Jeff - I think that we all have a box of lemons somewhere.
I've found 5 field mice in one bucket one day.
Mice here are easy as peanut butter is their absolute favorite snack. I miss not having a cat any more, as they took care of all of the outdoor rodents without fail. All of our cats have always been "barn cats", but life expectancy was usually less than 4 years.
Guy - Great pictures of the unique Autorack. Others have already responded to your question.
Willie - We got skunked on the trout fishing today. Looks like you're putting more meat on the table than us. Well done with the rat hunting.
That meal went directly to the vultures that live in my barn loft. They know where I leave them tidbits like turkey carcasses and stuff. That is unless a snake or bobcat gets it overnight before the birds see it. Snakes like coyotes, generally like warm meals so they would have to act quickly.

Today is National French Fry Day. Free food at McDonalds and Wendy's, but you have to download their app on your phone and be subject to that issue. I'm sure that there are other places doing the freebies as well.
Everyone have a great hump day. Stay safe and cool.

Figured out the sleep issue, Migraine on the way into work.

I'm working through it as I have stuff to do....just a lot slower.
Talked with the boss. It was a not chewing or anything like that, just some additional info he needed for policies he's writing.

Saw the hot dog mobile years ago, just nothing so recent. Good Catch!

Different kind of Plantar. this is the tendon that stretches across the bottom of the foot getting aggravated. No warts involved. ;) Well except the warty-grumbler the foot is attached to.

Troy, I have been fighting Plantar fasciitis for a year now. 3rd visit to podiatrist yesterday after a cortizone shot a month ago. No help at all. This is my excuse for not getting back into the train room. I (re)built the deck on back of the house and it took me 6 months because of dragging one foot around. Only thing left now is 1 handrail and some other trim, then I HAVE to get back to some trains.

All
A couple weeks ago we rode on the Santa Maria Valley RR #205 in Oregon after a visit to Crater Lake. Here's a before and after shot from March 83 and June 2022

Good day all!

Just catching up. Bad storms here last night, power back on now, but not every where.

Wife’s job suffered roof damage, her office flooded so she will be working from home for a while.

Never saw a Weinermobile, but I was passed by the Batmobile in Kentucky once.

Karl - was this pix near Paducah - we went to the Superman in Metropolis ( across the river ) thingie a couple of weeks ago, although we did not see the Batmobile. It was there somewhere. Note that the 'jet' was not active ;)

This was 6 years ago, IIRC it was near Louisville. The oldest boy had an issue in Missouri, I left on a Friday morning, picked him up Saturday morning and returned the rental van Sunday morning, Most of that trip was a blur.

Afternoon All,

Spent most the day in the Train room. I rattle canned (flat desert sand) on the styrene pieces (3 coats) then after it was dried I glued on a layer of gravel. After fitting and gluing the pieces in place I filled in underneath the styrene with medium dirt and glued it down with ballast glue then covered up the edges with fine dirt. I decided to use some WS accent powder (comes with gravel) around the edges and middle, but decided it looked like crap so I covered it with another layer gravel. Tomorrow I"ll weather everything then take photos.

Thank you for the photo likes yesterday.

Willie- Success! Nice looking scene.

Guy- You mean I don't get any trout?:( Beautiful landscape.

Chad- I had the same wonderlust when I was younger between being a military dependent, active duty Navy and vacations I've seen a bit of the world. Now I'm happy to stay home.

Troy- Spooky!:D

TomO- I hope you had a fun trip flying with your son.

Dave- Nice progress on the layout.

Todd- I've only seen one years ago.

Karl- That's cool.

Dave (TD)- Awesome steamer.

I hope everyone has a good day.

I haven't seen a Weinermobile in person since the 60's when one came to the local Kroger near us. During the early 70's, Oscar Mayer interviewed at the college campus at what was then NTSU, now UNT, for folks to man the units. I believe as Dave posted, that there were 6-7 of them at the time. I didn't qualify because they only wanted seniors who would work for them for a year after graduating.

Hello folks!

I got an email notice today from Trainworld. They have filled my reserved order for the following:

Broadway Limited 7186 HO GE ES44AC, UP #8075, TTG w/ Aluminum, Paragon4 Sound/DC/DCC, Smoke, (Fantasy Paint Scheme)

1657740460409.png

It has shipped out today. I will have it most likely by Friday or even by tomorrow possibly as it is coming from Brooklyn, NY. I am looking forward to showing that off to ya'll!

It seems they have (6) more left in stock of this road number 8075 and another road number 8076 (8) in stock.

They also have a "Black Widow" scheme with an American Flag.....I thought about it but I already have a fantasy black widow with out the flag which I think looks better.

No train stuff. I have a full 30 line sheet of paper with usernames & passwords. Each place I visit that needs pw to log in is unique.
Yest went with lady friend to see her grandson graduate from 2 month training . Is now an Alberta Peace Officer. Nope, don't get to *carry*. There were 17, from all over the province.
Hope my BLue Jays win last nite is the start of better things to come. My G D, lose 9 of 11! Pitching most obvious cause, but at same time didnt see much offense either.

I gave up riding years ago, after 2 incidents where other peoples actions left me de horsed, yes over the years I have left the horse in many directions, I have been on the neck in front of the saddle, and only once trusted someone else with the girth which resulted with me slowly falling sideways and de horse, riding full pelt after a runaway pony a squirrel crossed my path, the horse ground to a halt I helped after I hit the ground, had a bruised back for several weeks, choosing to go rodeo would not be my idea of fun, dressage was my sport but classes were not cheap.
