Here in Minnesota Silage is cow feed put into a silo. It is often green chopped corn stalks, as opposed to the dry shelled corn which is loaded onto covered hoppers and sent all over the country on rail cars. Silage is generally used locally. Sometimes it is stored in a bunker. The advantage to silage as opposed to dry corn is the expense of drying it is left out, however is not easily shipped and can go bad.

Haylage is similar to sileage except chopped hay, stored similarly in a silo or bunker, also with way more moisture than hay bales.

Manure that has gotten runny is often called slurry and most commonly found in large confinement operations. It is transported in tank trucks or large tanks with large baloon tires and spread on fields.

This is how these terms are used locally throughout Minnesota.
Dave- that’s how the terminology is used in Central Wisconsin.

Well, howdy there internet MRR peeps. It's Troy again

In another hour or so, I'll have officially completed another orbit around the sun. I don't like to put my birthdate in full on the interwebz, but I'm still on the front side of sixty. Born after Kennedy was shot in Dallas.

I'll be hitting the freebies for birthdays as hard as possible today. I hear Panera calling my name for a free pastry!
Trains (MRR Mag people) want to give me $5 off an order from their site. Wonder if there are any books I need?

We'll see what comes up. Told the wife it's time to go get a blooming onion tonight at Outback. (Aussie-themed restaurant in the states).

Got up half an hour ago and still haven't pressed the button on the coffee maker. I need to go rectify that.

Good morning all! 74 on the way to 83 with high humidity and a 60% chance of rain.

Been a busy week so far and already have things planned for today. I got all the work down for the class I'm taking done over the 3 day weekend so I won't have anything else to do for that until the new class week begins Saturday morning. Gotta get signed up for the two classes I'm taking in the Fall soon. I have to take a technical math class and a speech class. Math was probably my worst subject throughout my entire educational career and I'm not looking forward to taking it now. Fortunately, the instructor also works part-time for me in the IT department so he will be around some in my office if I need to beg him for help LOL. I've never taken a speech class before so that will be interesting. I've spoken in public before and am not nervous about doing it so hopefully it will go well.

Happy Birthday Troy!

Hope you all have a great day!

Morning all,

Partly cloudy and 83° this morning on the way to 100° with heat index to 110° again today. You know it's going to be hot when it's 83° at 4:00a and still that temp at 6:15a. Got the latest CowCatcher Magazine yesterday, so I spent some hours last night and this morning reading the last issue I hadn't had time to read. For those who haven't had the pleasure, this is a bi-monthly magazine, so that's how far behind I got.

Troy: Happy Birthday! Hope it's a good day.

Ken (OBTC): Don't start with the math...lol I hated math so much, I actually tried to get out of the second semester of sophmore geometry in high school. Barely pulled the second semester grade above water. Never took another until I went to college a number of years after high school. Ended up with a minor in mathmatics and have used none of it since...Math courses taken: College algebra, geometry and pre-calculus (none of these three counted toward the math requiirement as they were considered makeup), Calc's 1,2,3; 2 Linear Algerbra courses, Differential Equations. It was helpful when the kids did Calculus in HS as I was able to help.

BBL if I don't melt.

Math is everywhere.
As much as I struggle with the higher levels of it, I had to take a few of the mysterious versions of it leading up to my MBA.
The pinnacle was quantitative decision making. A very advanced form of Probabilities and statistics. I referred to it as stealth math.

Troy, Congrats on another orbit. Live life to the fullest you can, its enjoyable

Good Morning All. Clear and 79°, probably hitting 106° AGAIN today. No relief in sight until next Wednesday at 99°. No rain in the 10 day forecast. Even though the pool temperature has risen to 90° in the afternoon, it is still refreshing considering the air temperature. Right now it's at 85°. Heat index isn't expected to get much above 110°. Mother Nature is catching up since we had only one day of triple digits during the last two years.

Thursday today, time for the weekly grocery trek. I have to replenish the liquid chlorine supply for the pool and have my hearing aids cleaned and updated/upgraded as part of the routine maintenance, which I am three months late for. It's a bit of a break from the two grandkids who are staying with us until this afternoon. They'll stay home with Grandma.
My 7 year old granddaughter came out to help me pick tomatoes yesterday; picked seven, ate one, saw a spider and went back in. The spider was one of those beneficial black/yellow ones that grow as big as a human hand, but it was just barely quarter size right now. I'm somewhat behind on processing them right now even with my daughter taking 10# home Tuesday.

Too many likes and comments from yesterday to give individual thanks; so thanks to Everyone. I had a lot of comments that I thought of while reading Tuesday's posts regarding manure and fertilizers, but just didn't have time for them.

Still no real activity out in the train shed yesterday. Grandson is busy studying for Boy Scout merit badges. He's at the Life stage now, just short of Eagle Scout. Granddaughter came out to run a train but lost interest after less than half a trip from staging to staging. She definitely has a short attention span at this age.

No time for pictures this morning, even from the archives. Stay tuned though,

Ken (D&J) - One of the downfalls of living in VA (there's not many) is being too close to DC. Those rules about the signs are outright ridiculous.
Jeff - I don't do N scale so I cannot comment on the Kato engine. Most of my HO engines have a fine cobweb across the snowplow from running through the layout, and that picks up all of the lint and stray scenery materials. I have tiny spiders about 3/16" across that are quite active.
Steve J - While armadillos seem less plentiful around here, I think it has a lot to do with their northward migration.
Just like the killer bees, the fire ants have bred with red or black ants in parts of the state and that has tempered their ferocity a bit.
Troy - I don't drink coffee, but nice job there.
Happy Birthday. I like to eat at the Outback, and I am a frequent diner with rewards. But the Aussie theme that they use might be over-describing the place! Example is "shrimp on the barbie". Down under they are called prawns!
OB Ken - The only math that I ever used after college is geometry.

Everybody have a great day and be safe if you have warm weather.

To explain it a little more: entering a highway, roadway or any public thoroughfare, requires a full stop, even if there isn't or ever was a stop sign posted. Exactly as the implication seems, they get to ticket ya and take your money if ya don't come to a full stop first.

Good modeling modeling Crews and birthday people. Troy, again have a great birthday day.

Weather, another pleasant day is forecast. But based on the missed rain and severe weather botched forecasts around me the last few days, who really knows. It’s a nice 69f degrees now on the south deck of the homestead in So. Central Wisconsin. 86 later and there is a full cloud cover.

Turned the TV off at 12:30AM after watching 4 more episodes for the second night of Marco Polo on Netflix. In the last month from about 9 to midnight I have watched more TV then maybe the last 5 years minus NFL football. NFL has been on but mainly in the background and not really watching it. No trains last night.

I tried last night after dinner at 7 to watch TV in the main room on what I call Terry’s TV. She really needs an upgrade. I called the son around 7:30 and asked for some replacement TV ideas. He said he had given his mom some ideas a few weeks ago and will find the text and forward it to me. I can incur the wrath of Terry when she returns but the images on her tv really suck and even she would see the improvement. So, she has a 37” at least 10 year old digital screen TV. Would a new 85” OLED screen be too big a jump? Yep, your right, on second thought I should stay under 50”.

I had to pull the batteries on the 3 weather stations yesterday around the property. There was no lightning damage but all 3 went off line at the same time. I put the same battery packs back in after checking the charges and they were fine. It’s a mystery I am not going to try to solve. Damage from the winds we did get from the storms wasn‘t too bad with all trails available to ride on. There was one tree that took down the fence on a pasture that was scheduled to be used by the stable horses. That why I saw so many horses yesterday morning in a rarely used pasture. This was the second wind storm where the property manager has grown into his job and didn’t need my help. I will just because I am me check the trails today on a ATV ride. I also will check in at the stables to see how everyone is doing. A nap around 2 to 3, a couple hours in the train room. A trip to the daughter’s to water her plants and hey, I now have a plan.

Good morning all,

It is shaping up to be a beautiful day, started out a chilly 52° now already 66. Full sunshine out there.

Stopped at McDonalds cause I like their coffee. Had really crappy service at the drive through, slow and rude. Happens frequently at our local one, half their people seem to not give a dang, the other half are model employees. I am tempted to boycott them, however I am sure they don't care whether I show up or not.

Jeff - the waterfront bldg is shaping up FINE

Guy - nice looking paint jobs, assembly on your projects!

Mikey - portals turned out great

Ken - relax and enjoy speech class.

Troy - happy bday!

Willie - great about grandson and his Scout progress

more later, better get back to work

Good morning gang!

Flo, can I get some pancakes please, yes the blueberry kind, with the blueberry syrup , and a side of bacon!, Also can I get a tube of Aspercream, or Ben-Gay or maybe just lube my joints with some good old 10w40. 3 days since the flooring project and my knees and lower back are still stiff! I am going to attempt to put the toe molding back on today, maybe.

Troy,

Tom, I can relate to that cartoon!!

Willie, Does the Grandson have the Railroading merit badge yet?

Happy Birthday, TROY! Anymore I count anyone being under 60 as a blessing and to enjoy as much in life as you can ...
You will never be as young as you are today!

Hey Peeps -- Supposed to be 87f degrees for a high today with bright, clear, cloudless skies!
Too much ciaos (that didn't spell right) around here so, The Spousal Unit is off to Leggo Land with the boys this morning along with daughter and SIL. The car only holds 5 people and I have an adjustment at the dentist to attend - I have a couple of "sore" spots with the dentures which I could fix myself with the Dremel but I might as well let them correct as it is all part of the fee.

Don't really have any other news or excitement going on. Can't seem to make a dime with this screwy Market.

TomO - Sorry, I was not avoiding you but just have no answers on the airlines and their problems.
I have a feeling that I am too far removed from the goings on to really know much of anything?

60 second video:

We have basically the same thing in SLC called FrontRunner. Never been on it myself though my wife and son took it last year to go down to Orem when we were figuring out how my son was going to get to his university classes -- until he signed up for all online classes.

The FrontRunner looks to be the same type of locomotive and runs 3 of those double decker cars and a single height car of some sort.

KATO does a FrontRunner set of locomotives (N-scale) occasionally through their Kobo custom shop. Every few years they'll be available. Been looking to get one even though I don't do much US model railroading, just germanic-centric Euro and Japanese, since it is one of the few US trains I have some contact with. Haven't seen them in store since I made that decision though... Athearn made a set of the double deck cars in FrontRunner livery in N-scale as well. Only seen them once. It will be a long process to complete this one.

Well - - - - less than impressed. I finished my first install of the Caboose 220S throws with switch contacts for frog powering. I tried an experiment in attempt to avoid drilling a hole through the table. The plan was to cut away foam in a slot fashion and trim the contact lengths to less than foam depth (1 inch); solder wires and run them to the TO legs for soldering as per rail feeders.

Didn't work so well. The 20 AWG solid wires are too stiff (got some 28 AWG coming!) for real maneuvering in that tight of quarters. Ended up drilling a hole anyways to loop the feed wires down. Took way too much time and the thing looks a mess, but I can clean that up some.

On the bright side, it works and my little BLI 0-6-0 Plymouth passes over the frog even at a dead crawl. So the concept is there.

I have to admit, though, the Tam Valley Depot Hex juicers are now looking more attractive. I already have frog power wires on all TOs as I put those in upon installation. Maybe the electronic solution is better and just use standard Caboose GTs where desired. That way, I can use IDCs to tap into the bus and not have to drill anymore holes. I know it is mere fancy, but my mind's eye sees my layout tabletop becoming like swiss cheese!

Trouble is, I need two hex juicers just for the yard alone! Found them at $68 from DCC Hobby Supply. Anyone ever use them?

Other than that, not much going on. On severe caloric intake reduction following the 4th holiday. Was waaaaaaaaaay too close to 190 pounds and want to get back down to 177 or so. Wifeykins also looking to reduce so shouldn't be too hard. Hell, just staying out of the amber liquid and the vino will have significant impact!! And won't hurt overall health none.

Happy summertime modeling to all! Steve J
