Good morning from a strange looking morning in So. Central Wisconsin. There seems to be a orange hue in the blue sky. Like how it is when the western fire smoke drifts in. Feels more like a sunset then the sunrise sky! But with the little bits of rain we had yesterday any smoke should be gone. It is 72f degrees now but heading to 90+. Then the radar shows heavy storms moving in at 3 till midnight. Yesterday we got rain maybe 5 times, enough to wet the deck each time but I am not sure it helped the grass.

We had a good day with our company yesterday and even though the invite said it ends at 6 the good time lasted till about 9. Terry invited a good friend of hers, 30+ years to the party. One of his assistants called about 3 and said they were coming was it still ok. Terry said yes. The highest elected guy in the state, his wife and security detail popped in. 15 minutes before they arrived Terry announced to our guests he was coming and the NO POLITICS rule was enforce. He and his wife have always fitted in well over the years but 2 couples did say their goodbyes before he showed. They thanked Terry but one said they couldn’t believe Terry would invite such a liberal. I guess the horse riding friend doesn’t know my bleeding heart wife or daughter very well!

Terry and her gang of 4 leave for some time in Hawaii before noon today. They land in Phoenix and will fly the rest of the way with my brother and his g/f. The g/f had a chemo treatment Thursday and she reacted much better the brother says then a couple weeks ago.

I will have the place to myself and will even need to go to the daughters place to water her flowers and plants unless we really get a decent rain. The daughter’s family will be back next Monday.

fall and get up, I never worried about that until a couple years ago when I fell in the bathroom. But, the carton I thought was still funny

Willie, Terry would love your garden. Her dad her whole life planted super sized gardens. Seemed he could grow anything. He showed up to help when I started building raised beds for Terry’s 1st garden up north. Well, he told her he couldn’t grow everything but over the years learned what didn’t grow. He wasn’t an organic grower but he did not use commercial fertilizers or weed killers. Made his own stuff and used lots of wood ash. When he passed and years later Terry and I were cleaning out his garden shop we found lots of whiskey that he used to make for weed and bug killers. His formula book Terry used for years but she gave the book to her youngest brother when he retired a few years ago. His garden in retirement rivals anything the dad had. But the youngest brother also grows flowers like his mother did. He has 5 acres and it seems like there is no grass, just separated garden spaces.

Around 11 last night I spent maybe 15 minutes spraying the last of my Testors DullCote spray cans. Lots of roof and wall detail parts and 4 pieces of rolling stock that I hope to weather in the next few days. I have the replacement product for the Testors. I am trying some VMS Matte in a bottle. I look forward to trying it in my airbrush. The VMS took a couple weeks in transit from Poland and it comes highly recommended. I will report after I use it.

Good morning. 68° with mixed clouds and sun. Going to 87°. The rest of the week's forecast shows cloudy and rainy icons, but only low percentages of probability. That's what I call CYA Weather Forecasting.

This week, Monday comes on Tuesday...I like the way Patrick described it, "Tuesday Monday".

Yesterday afternoon, I actually ventured down to the basement train room, and test fitted my enginehouse area. Looks like my idea will work. It is amazing how small an area actually becomes, when you place a kit structure on it. Originally, the idea was to replicate the Stony Creek Engine House, as it appeared in a 1940 aerial photo...a three stall roundhouse with 90' turntable, plus additional facilities. A small engine terminal. However, that did not fit the allocated space, so plan B the brick Walthers engine house came into play...

Ken (OBTC): Gardens are nice, but a PIA. I used to set up an over ground sprinkler system, (No permit required), set to irrigate for 20" every third day. Worked quite well, except on rainy dayswhen it looked quite foolish, but it did run up the water bill. I still have a small one, with a few tomato plants, and pepper plants, and a strawberry patch (Birds love the strawberrys).

Last night's fireworks sounded like a firefight, that lasted several hours. (Defined as Brooklyn Style), The cat was unhappy.

Good morning!

We went to a company party last night. With Ohio's new fireworks laws, the owner and a few of our key employees got together and assembled a 35-minute fireworks display that was far better than most of the municipal offerings nearby. They lit the fuse at 10:00, and at 10:35, the last of the smoke was rolling across the lake. It was quite a show, with the fireworks being about 30-40 yards away.

Good morning all,

did some work Sunday on my caboose throws. Labor intensive! Hopefully I can complete the first installation tonight and then try to optimize the process. All of a sudden, frog juicers are looking better!

Didn't do much yesterday. But yikes, have I been eating this weekend. Time for major caloric intake revision! Will combine brekky and dinner before my 11:30 golf outing, then a salad for supper, methinks. And getting up on the wagon.

My day:
0800 - 1100 work from home, eat
1130 9 holes golf with VFW group
Shopping at Costco
Home, maybe for a rest
1615 Workout at Orange Theory
1730 police the yard and mow.
1845 light supper and then maybe some train work?

2000? lights out!

Good morning gang!

oh my aching back, knees, shoulders etc.! 😕

Yesterday was payback day for #3 son. 2 years ago when he bought his house Dad put in a service day ripping out carpet and laying new flooring in his living room and dining room.
Yesterday was payback day. Gone is the ugly linoleum in the kitchen and stained carpet in the dining room, all replaced with vinyl plank flooring. After pizza for dinner he said goodbye I took a shower and passed out and never saw 1 firework at all. Tomorrow I will trim it all out, today I need a break.

Good morning all,

Patchy dense fog this morning, 63 now headed for 78.

Had a great 4th celebration, marched in parade, gave out candy, many youngsters saying thank you, pretty encouraging.

Not much for fireworks yesterday, Sunday night there were two separate neighbors blowing them off for hours.

Worked on the layout, split firewood, ate cheese curds. Just about a perfect day.

Pics later.

Curt, must be roads or footpaths to your new section of track?

I was fortunate (or not) to never get mumps, measles, or chicken pox. My siblings did, but not me. I do show by blood test as having had them, but no symptoms. In my case the Dr's office gave me the shigrex shots as they were covered there by insurance but might not be fully covered if I waited for Medicare to cover them.

I used to laugh at the "I've fallen and can't get up!" commercials, but they aren't as funny after I hit 60...

Not to Shill for Apple, but the Apple watch has fall detection and will auto-call 911 if you turn that setting on and it detects a fall. I decided this is a good thing for me (56 now). I like to go out and walk around the neighborhood for exercise -- sometimes late at night or early in the morning. If I fall for any reason and don't get up (heart attack, hit my head on fall, etc) someone will come get me.

I've triggered it once but was OK and so turned off the response. You have so many seconds or a minute to respond to the watch after a fall or else it does the contact. The fall when the ladder slipped on our house build I talked about a couple months ago triggered it. Lots of stories out there on the 'net about people havinbg heart attacks while biking or running or wiping out on their bike and being unconscious who have been "saved" by the feature.

Other fitness trackers of e-watches may have similar features, IDK.

The good thing is it is not a specialized "can't get up" device but a normal device you use for other purposes and it happens to do this as well.

(automatically on for age 55+ and you have to turn it off if you don't want it)

Good Morning All. Clear and 75°, going up to 101° later on. With a relative humidity of 25%, it will feel like 105°, pretty much a repeat of yesterday and a preview of the foreseeable future. After two full years of no triple digits, Mother Nature is catching up. Too cool for a heat advisory here!!!o_O No rain in the forecast, but there wasn't any in the forecast when it rained Sunday afternoon.

Productive morning yesterday, with no wind, I got all of the "burn trash" burned, did laundry, installed a ceiling fan and of course picked veggies including tomatoes, bell peppers and yellow squash. Later in the day we headed for East Dallas to my brother's cook-out and fireworks show. As I have previously posted, his home is across the road from the DAC Country Club. They have had a fireworks show since the early 60's which we could see from our back yard a couple of blocks away when we were growing up. Trees now inhibit that view and are beginning to encroach on the view from his yard. But most of the show was above the tree line. Let's relive a few instances. Reflections are his pool.

It was more spectacular than these pictures show. Traffic wasn't bad either way except a nine mile stretch on the way home with three cars side by side across the freeway going 8 mph under the speed limit of 70 mph. Totally oblivious to the crowds behind them and the totally open stretch of roadway ahead of them. I used a longish LH on-ramp easement to get around finally, followed by at least two others who knew the road as well as I did.
No rest today as I have a few last minute tasks to do before the grandkids arrive this afternoon for a three day stay-over. I still don't know whether we'll get two or all three local kids. Yesterday I purposely left some easy to pick tomatoes for our seven year old granddaughter to pick. Hopefully I can can some pickled Jalapeno peppers today and stack some firewood that I cut Sunday. I should preemptively mow some of the yard after the unexpected rain that we got Sunday, but that depends on the honey-do list. Since the kids are coming over, I have to definitely look for my bathing suit or a suitable pair of shorts.

Thanks for the comments and likes yesterday; Tom O, Guy, OB Ken, Sherrel, Smudge, Patrick, James, Rick, Tom, Hughie, Gary, Karl, Steve J, Chad.

Hope to get back into the train shed habit this week, I miss it.

OB Ken - Glad to read that your family is recovering. Are you isolating or just letting nature take it's course?
Regarding the garden watering, a thorough watering once a week suffices even here. 120 gallons a week applied all at once should take care of a garden just under 200 sq ft, about 14' x 14'. If you are watering daily, you're only getting the upper surfaces wet and the plant roots stay up there and are more prone to drying. Watering once a week allows the roots to go deeper and makes them more drought resistant. 1" a week of rainfall combined with overhead irrigation should do it.
Guy - What misery that tooth has brought. Is it your country's medical system, or the smallness of your town???
I absolutely love the forest picture yesterday.
Curt - Jars are not filled to the top. You must leave headroom, 1/2" for pints and 1" for quarts. The air is expelled by pressure in the jars producing a vacuum seal. Having the contents too close to the top could and does cause contents to seep under the lid and prevents sealing.
Tom O - Great story about Terry's dad. Over the years, actually early on, I learned that my soil is too alkaline for potatoes or blueberries; and corn wasn't worth the effort for the small yield. Whiskey and wood ashes are both organic. Heating my house with wood, I have plenty of wood ashes, which are supplemented with grass clippings, shredded leaves, compost, and aged wood chips from the power company's tree trimmers. One neighbor contributes goat and sheep manure occasionally and I only purchase bone meal and blood meal, all organic stuff. Insects - I grind up Jalapenos or Serrano peppers with garlic, filter and make a spray to apply if they get too pesky. Works on everything but grasshoppers. Neighbor's guineas will do the trick, but they only rarely get the quarter mile down to me before they get full on the way!

Today is National Bikini Day. Need I say more?
Everybody have a great day.

Good morning all! 76 degrees here heading for a hideous 97 with heat index around 109 today. Gonna be a miserable day, temperature wise. Back to work after a 3 1/2 day weekend.

Hate to say this, but seriously considering not doing a garden next year. With the lack of rain on a regular basis we wind up having to water several times a week. That's about 120 gallons of water a week going on the ol' water bill and the garden still isn't doing well for some reason. About the only things growing well are the onions, some of the potatoes, a couple tomato plants and a couple other things. We usually have great luck with corn but it's kinda stalled out after starting off strong. The green beans are starting to look a little better but very little else is growing well. In addition to all that, the watering and other related chores pretty much consume our evening every day. I enjoy the garden, but the last couple years it's just not been worth the effort for the most part.

Nothing else to report. Hope you all have a great day!
Gardens in general do only short term benefits on fertilisers,
wood based compost or animal manure is far more nutritious,
also as I find to my cost if I do not water plants struggle on uptake of those nutrients,
you can lengthen between watering if you add a top layer of wood chip, cardboard(remove the plastic elements) grass cuttings any mulch improves water retention, but can lead to more slugs and pests
all your organic kitchen waste should go to your composter for the garden, you do not need to turn it over it’s just takes longer
a bloke peeing near any number of veggies gives nutrients to veg, avoid the same place too regularly or 1.it smells 2 the urine becomes too strong and damages most plants, but pee and water is good for plants, and saves you flushing the toilet.
you can make a dry compost toilet, not likely in a built up area, lol, but in the countryside, old yellow leaves and vegetables and human poop is a very good fertiliser., best not to pee in the dry too much, but a little wooden shelter and a seat with a hole, is good for plants,if you have a hill put up hill so nutrients seep downwards, poop from non carnivore animals is superior especially grass eaters, eg horses and cows.
grow comfrey it has 10 feet roots you rip the leaves and drop near other plants, burn weeds, not throw and put wood ash on your garden not not coal ash!
But I agree a garden is a big investment in time, and watering/feeding almost as much of a pain as having animals. try a year where you either clean early spring and see what comes up self seed, or go for items that can stomach less water. so not tomatoes, cucumbers nut more root veggies etc where they can survive on less water and care.
Many high work load veggies can be avoided, stringing up and weeding take time.
Or cut back to a small more essential and let the rest self seed.

This year I have had prodigious amounts of
self seed spinach,tomatoes-albeit later than if grown by me, celery is popping up, borage, nasturtiums, mint, many other herbs are ok with less water and care, old potatoes not worthy of eating or gone green, do not gin them ground them and let them grow.

I do a bunch of this and still struggle for time though, so ensure you hold seed in case you need it the year after,as food might continue to sprig all,do stuff you can process, eat, freeze, canning, drying (dry says last longer but temperature and humidity can still effect ‘so called sealed jars’

and if stocking up on grain, rice, wheat, pasta, etc put in a plastic second bag and freeze one week to kill off weevil eggs then it will stay good a lot longer, once out of freezer best in glass jars, balls etc, to stop any nee infestations, food from the shops is usually heavily contaminated and the right temps and humidity will give you weevils. I fed a w0kg bag of very expensive organic wheat to my chickens, because I failed to freeze before storage.

Speaking of falling and can't get up...

I once bought my wife a T-shirt that says "Help, I'm talking and I can't shut up." She likes it, but her favorite shirt I got her that says "The only time my wife stops talking is when her mother starts."

Those two and my favorite shirt of hers... a picture of a housefly hovering over a pile of doo doo with the caption "Will Work for Sh$%"

To help with the visuals, my wife talks to herself all the time, especially while she's cleaning. Drives me nuts because I tune it out.... then all of a sudden I realize it's been unusually quiet... I look over and she's staring at me with that "I'm talking to you" face and I have no idea what the topic is, let alone what she just asked me or how long she's been waiting for me to reply...

Which reminds me of an age-old question... If a man is talking in the middle of a forest with no women around to hear him, is he still wrong?

Sniggers, my husband might want to. Buy me those shirts, but it would take a very very brave man to do so lol.I do not talk to myself though, and usually check the other is paying attention. He hates being alone and knows if I get fed up I wander off, so I get asked my opinion etc even if he then tries to steer me to what he likes, over our marriage I have come to enjoy things I would never ever have bothered with. But then so has he, marriage lol.

the shirts are a great story.

But Terry talks to herself too. What you described has happened to me so many times I can’t begin to count them

Good Morning!

The rains have us socked in for the week. This is the wettest summer in memory. - That's ok; the forest is enjoying the rebirth effects.
I live on the hill, with hundreds of feet of sand below me. Those poor people living in the valley on a clay base, though. I feel sorry for them.
It's a slight difference in real-estate value that made them choose to purchase in a flood plain, but, it's the exact reason why I purchased up the hill.

In times past, there has been serious floods in the valley area. Deadly floods. Here's a photo from the 1920's that shows how serious it was at one time:
Prestlien Family_Flood 1927.jpg

The entire Prestlien family is buried in the local cemetery.
I don't believe something that serious will ever happen again. It's said that the valley will flood again every 100 years or so, though.
I haven't heard of any issues so far this year. My son does live in the valley.

It is very good weather to do something on the layout. I believe I'll work on the oil dealership. Lots to do there.

I'm also trying to extend the track towards where the swing gate will be. Not sure what I want to do with that area. I'm not set on what type of industries to put in there. I would kinda like it to be realistic to my area; so, that knocks out any type of warehousing, like produce storage or furniture making. All that would have been done in Edmonton.
I placed a couple of switches on the table, one right and one left, while I consider the problem. I do not have any buildings on hand that I can use. - Our area is mostly forestry, oil, and aggregates. I'll need to think hard on this one.
A photo:
Layout_07-05-2022 (1).JPG

Here's another photo, just because I can:
Layout_07-05-2022 (2).JPG

The layout is getting built at snail-like velocity.

I'm glad I'm reading yu'all had an ok Independence Day, even if you did go to sleep during the festivities. So happy none of you suffered the effects of what sick people are capable of, and stayed safe.

Guy - What misery that tooth has brought. Is it your country's medical system, or the smallness of your town???

Today is National Bikini Day. Need I say more?
Willie - It's not the towns size. We have at least 4x dentists in this town, plus a supposedly good one in Mayerthorpe, 20 minutes away. I believe what Ken said is accurate, and the medical community around here is effectively milking the insurance coverage.
As far as my tooth goes, I'm going to make an appointment with another dentist and try to order the tooth removed. If I can't do that, then I will remove the tooth myself. Sooner or later, my body will try and eject it, making removal alot easier.
Seems it's hard to find a doctor that wants to be a doctor and help people.
Around here, we only admire bikini's in photos from other places. - And thankyou for the comment on my forest photo!

Have a great day, everyone!

I hate to break it to you guys, but talking to your self is a sign of intelligence.

Then I must be a genius!! But, what are you if you argue with yourself? ;):D:rolleyes:
