So, I bought, and then stuffed the RAM 2500 truck....

Bought it, in part with the idea that in the near future I might start building and taking Free-moN modules to a few model railroad meets and shows between the upper midwest and even the west coast. So to that end I bought a truck with a 8' bed and a lift-gate. Because my right hand strength has diminished after my recent neuro-musculture problem.

All for naught now because I stuffed the truck, but I COULD replicate it a second time. IF it's the right way to go, but I'm the sort who buys into the idea that the universe does sometimes try to dissuade you if you are on the wrong track. BIGTIME dissuasion here with this latest event, certainly. But on the other hand too, maybe I'm just supposed to persevere. Supposed to struggle through the blizzard, so to speak.

The other reason for buying the truck was to also buy a flatbed car-hauler, as I currently own four vehicles, none of which actually run. A 2003 E46 4WD BMW 330xi Sedan, with only 82K on the clock (the mystery. It SHOULD start and run the very next time I insert the key, but still doesn't), a '88 Cherokee (that still won't pass emissions), and two Porsches, one of which--the 996 Cabriolet--was stolen, and had a blown out key/ignition system upon return. That one is a real problem I can't solve yet, other than selling it for whatever offer I can get. Tempted.

Once I HAD the flatbed, though, and after all the car-hauling was done (at least for a time), I would also have been able to transport even more modules back and forth. And the older I get, the more the modular idea appeals to me. At my age I think it pretty unlikely that the "dream layout" will ever be built, but maybe the smaller versions would be enough.

And the last idea with the big RAM was to buy or lease a travel trailer and travel about the western US for a year or two. To "try on" different places, in order to find a good place to land and plant a last set of final roots. A couple of my cousins have done that, and with good results.

Which brings me round to the very long post I just wrote, but then deleted. The gist of which was: [Roughly speculating] What can I plan around as far as future technologies to get me through my last years until the end. And, can I count on any of them to help me build the last, big layout?

Or should I just punt forever on that idea?

The two technologies I'm most heavily invested in would be Autonomous Driving (it would be too much to hope too for an Autonomous Mechanic)...and, more generally, robotics. Personal-Assistant Robotics in my case, but it's probably enough said. If you are an Isaac Azimov fan as I am you probably also know more. But the real question is still: "What can I hope for in MY future, and what can I plan for moving forward.

Gotta love the future: It's always a gamble, no matter how well you plan things out.

@Snowman I can see where you are going with your idea. I recently gave up my beloved F150 due to aging problems. Settled on an unbelievably comfortable Kia Carnival, that will haul modules easily. However this will not haul a flatbed. Maybe a SUV that can pull a trailer and haul modules? And for a layout, what if you design it around your modules, allowing you to easily access areas and keep wiring simpler?

Exactly what I was hoping for, thank you. And timely to boot.

I bought the big RAM and then suddenly faced the prospect, at 2AM and 10F of replacing one of the rear tires. I COULD have managed it that night, but really couldn't even five years from now.

Which has me reconsidering so many things I have, thusfar, taken for granted.

Sis has a 2013 Highlander Hybrid, and, even though I'm fond of my 911/996, I'd have to say it's by FAR the most advanced vehicle any of us have owned. The 2017 RAM I just stuffed was a mere Tradesman level package, so it didn't even have an overhead light. :D

[But that was also the only regular cab long bed I could find, so....]

Microace? I'm out of almost every loop, granted, but that's one I don't know.
Japanese N scale manufacturer. Pretty much only do Japanese prototypes.

Unlike KATO which is huge in Japan but also does US and European protons.

Other Japanese N scale manufacturers are Tomix (a Tomy brand) and probably the largest? model railroads manufacturer. They also extensively do H0 bug H0 is not that popular in Japan either most people living in smaller apartments or houses. Tomix is mostly just Japanese prototypes. However their sub brand Tomytech does a limited amount of stuff like some German trams in addition to Japanese prototypes. Tomytech trains are mostly static models but they sell metal wheels, moveable pantographs, and motorized chassis for them so you can convert them to normal use.

And GreenMax. They pretty much just do N and just Diane’s prototypes. While they do finished trains they also do kits where you assemble the wagons and stuff from parts.

Those are the “big 4”. Tomix and KATO and then the second tier of “big/major 4” are GreenMax and Microace.

Guided Missile Fire Control Technician
Ah, the old FTG rate. That was replaced by FC - Fire Control Technician. I was a DS - Data Systems Technician, which was broken up into FC and ET - Electronics Technician. I requested to go to ET, but my job codes caused me to go FC. Luckily, I did not have to take any more rating exams at that point in my career since I did not know anything about the FC rate and would have gotten killed on the test.

My first ship came a few years after yours. USS Cochrane DDG-21. It was also about 100ft shorter. Bobbed like a cork during unrep. 1200 PSI steam plant that a pinhole sized leak would cut your head off and cauterize it before you knew you were dead (at least that's the myth).

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those with less weather than before

It's Troy again.

Still in pain the butt mode. Piriformis is still acting up. I've got three weeks to get it under control before we travel on our cruise. Right now, the comfortable position is on my side on the couch, with a pillow between my knees. It gets better throughout the day, but sitting for long periods still gets uncomfortable.

I hope to cut down on my Ibuprofen dose today. Maybe. We'll see.

Wife and I went to Catholic Chicken last night (PopeYES). We always take our own bottle of honey to spread on the biscuits (flakey rolls for those of you across the pond). All that the restaurant has is "honey flavored syrup"... I want real bee barf, not High fructose imitation bee barf.

In other news, I was going to type this half an hour ago, but in the process of dragging my laptop over to the couch with a long reach, I forgot that it has a power cord attached, and knocked over my travel tumbler of hot coffee. That cup is better than a ceramic one when I'm couch bound.

Fortunately, it was only a minor flood on the carpet. But enough I had to get the hand-held carpet cleaner out to suck up the wet.

Don't remember if I posted dinner pics from snowmageddon Sunday:

I normally par-bake the crust only at 350F. For some reason I set the oven to 300. So one side was not as firm as it should have been. That made for some topping runoff as soon as it was out of the pan. It was still good, but we decided to consume it all instead of saving some for lunch the next day. Neither of us wanted the runoff section of mostly grease covered dough without much cheese, so it was about the right amount. We did finish off the pile of toppings that slid off, though. ;)

good morning all!

Happy hump day!

The cold still continues. Currently its 3F with an expected high of 16F/ Gets a couple of degrees warmer every day.
Should be plentiful sunshine though with few clouds.

No games or practices tonight so should be a quiet night at home for a change.

Have a safe day everyone!

For those of us who are blind in one eye, can't see out the other, and have numb fingers, this rerailer helps a lot. Saw this on the interweb and used aluminum tape. For locos that have traction tires, you can just apply reverse gear and drive it off.

Love my re-railer. One of those things If something happened to it I would replace it today!

maybe you should go see this guy. He really gets into the medical side of things, explains how everything affects everything else, tweaks what is necessary and not just doing the pull the head out of your neck type thing and we get to see you get your arse kicked by him haha.

He's a little far to drive. Only about 2500 miles.

I'm following this channel on YouTube

What I've learned about Sciatic pain is there is no simple fix. Its 4-6 week recovery at best. Unfortunately, this is a different form than I had last time. This time is caused by the piriformis muscle clamping down on the sciatic nerve in the pelvis. Last time it was caused by degenerating disks in the Lumbar spine.

Edit: just realized the thumbnail of the vid I linked makes it sound like it's a simple fix. It's not. That Dr of PT shows how to find one exercise out of many to work with. It's still a long recovery process. The piriformis is burried under the glut-max, and their is no easy way to get it to relax.

Morning all,

Was starting to post this 30 minutes ago as the site went down for a bit.

Currently 9° and heading for 36° later. One nice thing about the snow is it makes the deer standing along the road easier to see. Had a dozen attempting to cross and I did see them in plenty of time,

I'd also like to be the first on the site to wish Karl (kbkchooch) a Happy Birthday. That makes you 2 weeksish older than me!!! Hope you have a great day. As luck would have it, I get a 4-day weekend for mine.

Good morning gang!

7° under sunny skies, (feels like -2°with a high temp of only 16° predicted. Looks like the rest of the week is going to be the same until snow this weekend. It's so cold I just saw a politician with his hands in his OWN pocket!!

Blabbermouth!! 😊 ;) :) No seriously thank you, Just one more trip around the sun.

MAybe I can get the SR. breakfast special at the Ihop across the street!

Good Morning All. Clear and 23°, might get up to 47° later on. Up into the mid-50's tomorrow and Friday before the next cold front Friday night. That one won't last as long as this one has and no rain/snow/sleet until next week, maybe!

Second night in a row that I slept 8 hours even with 2 pee breaks! Feels good this morning!
Still not a lot going on here. I have continued to sort and file the photos in the computer, bring in firewood, (at least a bit of exercise), and I actually watched some TV yesterday. Now, that's boredom for me! I watched parts of a few cooking shows on various channels. Wife is bored as well since she had them on while doing Valentine's watercolor cards for the grandkids. A welcome break from the Hallmark channel.
We did have a good conversation with a representative from the government. I had lost my Treasury Direct ID number and couldn't recover it. First of all I called the toll-free number and there was no wait! Had a real human being answer immediately, who spoke real English. I was calling the Treasury Department regarding a missing Treasury Bond and the 1099 tax form to go with it. Turned out that it wasn't missing, but we somehow directed it to the wrong bank account and didn't realize that it had been deposited. We originally thought that our Treasury account had been hacked.

Hopefully I will be watching things thaw out today since we have a doctor appointment tomorrow. My dentist's office cancelled my scheduled hygienist appointment for today...I had already called to reschedule on Monday, but no one has been in their office since Friday.

I spent almost three hours out in the train shed yesterday; just about all of it running various trains. Did a bit of cleanup and rearranging of stuff under the layout also. While the temperature out there was 58°, I still had long sleeves on which hampers my ability to do much layout work due to snagging.

Troy - Good luck with the sciatica. It seems to be more severe this time around.
David - That's quite a suite! Continue to enjoy the trip.
John - We haven't had a delivery notification from our PO since Friday, so we don't know if there just isn't anything or they're unable to get out. I can't get down to the mailbox 1.25 miles away to check anyway!
Happy Birthday Karl.

Oh yea! we're under a freezing fog advisory this morning. Not sure how that works? Do I walk into a wall of ice? I don't know since there is no fog at my location.

Everybody have a great Wednesday.
