My Hungarian wife brought her family’s tradition of eating lentils on New Year's with her to Baltimore. I never really understood it, and I’m not a fan of lentils, but she never pushed it on me.
“A lencse gazdagságot hoz a házhoz.” translation “Lentils bring prosperity into the home.”
“Újévkor lencsét kell enni, hogy ne fogyjon el a pénz.” translation “On New Year's you must eat lentils, so your money doesn’t run out.”

The topic has come here in the coffee shop, so I turned to Microsoft's AI Copilot for answers.
Lentils for New Year's: What it Means: In Italy, Germany, Eastern Europe, and many other parts of the world, lentils are enjoyed on New Year's as a symbol of prosperity and good luck.
Why Lentils?
Their round, coin‑like shape represents money.
When cooked, they swell, symbolizing growth and abundance
They’re simple, comforting, and rooted in centuries of tradition about beginning the year with gratitude for every blessing, big or small.
The American Echo
Black‑eyed peas took on the same symbolism in the South, a simple dish carrying a whole philosophy of hope. Lentils are the Old-World original. It’s the same Old-World idea in a New World form.
The Tradition Began in Ancient Rome.
Romans believed lentils symbolized wealth and prosperity. By the 1st century AD, Romans were already giving pouches of lentils as New Year’s gifts, hoping they would “turn into coins.”
Eating lentils or black-eyed peas on New Year’s is a tradition that’s been around for over 2,000 years.
Fell asleep bout 2100 in the recliner. Managed to wake up at 15 seconds to 10. Got to see the ball drop in NYC. Gee, looked like a ball dropping. Did not wait around for the crowd shots and went to bed.
Libbyites had a blast last night. Bangs and booms started at about 1930 and continued. From the sounds of it, they had a ton of money to go up in flames. Heard big bore rifles, various pistols too. Dogs did not go outside, period. They stayed in their beds next to our recliners, kinda ducking. I had a couple of mortar shots, but did not let them fly. Oh well. Didn't even think to turn the scanner on. Many moons ago, I used to be a 'professional drunk' and always left the holidays for the amateurs! Kinda like @santafewillie we don't think we have been up at 0000 for more than 30 years.
Shopping yesterday was good. Spent about $200 on food for the pantry/refer/freezers, and some for us. Figure we used about 5 1/2 gallons of fuel to get there and back $2.65/Gal. Probably would have cost us near $300 at the monopoly store so I guess we are ahead. Besides, it got out butts outa the house.
I used to think 60 was old, then nope 70 was old, then when I hit 70 I thought maybe 75 was old, well at 73 I can tell you it’s not a mindset. The body will tell you when it’s old. 73 it in the morning getting out of bed, the horizontal tango hurts anytime after your done but feels good during but like Mike said, we all lied to you, old is not a mindset
A sunny but cold Northern illinois morning. Currently its a frigid 12F with a high of only 19F. Looks like a warm up towards the
weekend.
Last nights New Years Eve was pretty low key. We ended up trying a new fried chicken place that just opened up a couple of
months ago here in town. We didn't go and do sit down, I went and grabbed it and we ate here. It was pretty good and the
consensus was we will go there again. I did make it up till a few minutes past midnight, but that was all. My daughter was at
a sleepover so the house was pretty quiet.
Nothing planned for today. I'm sure something will crop up, but hopefully nothing major.
Will venture downstairs and play with trains later. I want to get more done this year. I slacked the last half of the year.
