The original post was to do with the cost of a Bus windscreen and a motorhome windscreen being 5k, that's expensive for a piece of glass, or is that considered a good price in the US?

And here's a campervan for £6000.00 ( I did say nearly, didn't I) :)
Not exactly a Winnebago I know, but close enough for the UK.

one of the biggest grumps I've got about Britishism is trying to figure out Truck, Van, Caravan, Lorrey, et al...

We've got Van, Camper (usually pulled by a truck), RV, and Mobile Home. So the USA-isms are not much better, but at least I grew up with them in the RV capital of the world (most of the US ones come out of Northern Indiana)

Morning all,

Things moving faster than they hoped, but still not back up. The desktops are coming back up pretty well and we are able to communicate with 8 of my 9 servers. The ninth was just being obstinate, but it always has been. We have a functional backup of it so we're not completely discouraged. We still have a lot to do, but appears we'll be close to normal sometime within the next week. Not sure yet whether we're working the weekend yet, but I'd like to get the servers updated and back online as soon as humanly possible.

It's not helped by using different words, but have the same meaning, truck and lorry is the same thing, any vehicle over 3 1/2 tons.

SUV is your pickup truck also called a 4X4.

An RV which is pretty much something like a Winnebago to us, most here would describe it as a mobile home.

A Caravan is something you tow.

This is our version of a mobile home, usually called a static mobile home.

Campervan you know.

A van is any vehicle with a covered rear and designed for conveying goods, that can be from a Minivan (think of the Mini car) to a 3 1/2ton vehicle.

An 18 wheeler or Big Rig, we call an Artic (as in articulated)

A 4 axled truck we call either a 8 legger or tipper wagon (as that is their most common configuration)

Isn't the English language wonderful. :)

Good Morning All. Clear and 34° on this fine morning. Mid-60's is the forecast for today and tomorrow. Another Norther comes through Sunday with wintry mix possible from Monday through Thursday. Weather people are already getting excited.

Yesterday's grocery trek went well, my Kroger store is almost done remodeling and I am beginning to learn the new locations for everything. Mainly, they made all of the center aisles wider by making the frozen food aisles more narrow. Center aisles have gone from 8' to 12', while the frozen food aisles and a few other outer ones have gone from 22' to 16'. One result is that everything but meat, produce, deli and beer/wine has moved. They do have new store directories hanging from a board every so often, that you can take to navigate. I for one appreciate the wider aisles, since the normal shopping time for me has a high number of slower folks and those motorized cart users. Prices are not coming down. It seems that the only stuff on sale is stuff that I don't buy anyway like pet food, bottled water and diapers/baby products.
Gasoline prices are continuing to rise, I noticed that everyone was now above $3/gal; most places were near $3.19.
I did some electrical upgrades in the house yesterday. I replaced two outlets that were no longer working, and replaced several 40 year old breakers that were not always functioning correctly, kept tripping off for no apparent reason. I have to do that kind of stuff when my wife isn't home because she hates me working on electricity when I don't turn the main house breaker off. I did OK, no sparks or shocks encountered, and all works as planned afterward. I do still need to replace an outlet on the front porch...I don't have a clue which breaker that one is on, so it will be a live adventure. Right now it's just three wires sticking out of the outlet box, the black one (hot) has a wire nut on it. It can be done if I am careful!

Thanks for the comments and reactions to the hopper build yesterday.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I finished the covered hopper kit. Started with the top.

Just to show how old this kit is, here are the supplied couplers. The ones on the right are early Proto couplers, not Kadees. They have a plastic knuckle spring like a McHenry, so needless to say, they were trashed along with the horn-hooks in favor of Kadee #148's.

That's 40 more parts making 86 total for the project all together. It looks great in person.
I'll be going back to cleaning structures today as I get closer to finishing up the quarterly cleaning project, which I was 10 days late in starting.

Troy - Good luck with the new book.
Tom O - Continued wishes for success with the Ozempic. Seems like it's working for you in conjunction with the exercise and weight loss. All of that and the carb counting. I've been slipping a bit on the carb counting, but glucose levels are staying in the 115-125 range. I do need to gradually lengthen my walks back to 1.5 miles/day and resume losing weight. According to the doctor, I gained one pound over the holidays!
Karl - I guess that if Wayne Gretzky can make a slap shot, he can hit a golf ball!
Sherrel - When we were cleaning out my late brothers house, we were able to pile the 65 year old furniture by the curb for the City of Dallas bulk pickup on certain Mondays. We put it out on Saturday morning. By Sunday evening, all of it was gone. The migrant community in Dallas knows the schedule of the bulk pick-up and scours the particular scheduled neighborhood all weekend. Very little actually goes in the city truck. It's a sight to see all of these pickup trucks, vans and make-shift trailers working their way up and down streets in the upper middle class and middle class neighborhoods. Folks in Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban and Ken Fisher neighborhoods pay someone to haul off their stuff.
David - Our weather can get colder even at our elevation. The Rocky Mountains act as a funnel for the cold air that comes south from Canada. Our air here is also mostly low humidity and dry air cools off more rapidly than moist coastal air.
I have found that my electric oil radiator does better at maintaining temperature than it does raising temperature.
Chris -

I noticed that the listing claimed a horsepower rating of 28! My lawn mower has more than that!

Everybody have a great day and an awesome weekend.

Ok , truck = lorrie, I get that

SUV to me is a FWD or AWD vehicle resembling a tall station wagon, unitized body construction (mostly) with versatile seating configurations.

a Pickup is a bit heavier, body on frame construction RWD or 4X4 capable of towing and hauling more than a SUV

an RV can be a van, motorhome or really any self propelled vehicle that you can spend the night in.

a caravan has camels, right??🐪🐫🐪🐫🐪🐫

The picture, we call that a single wide!

YMMV

Hoppers are looking good Willie,
and 2.8ltr = 201bhp, so that's one heck of a lawnmower you have.

I think in the US an RV is any sort of camper on wheels -- whetehr a "Winnebago" type or a RV trailer type (gooseneck, 5th wheel, etc).

A caravan is a group of people (vehicles) moving together. But VW had their "Caravan" camper.

A mobile home is always what you called a static mobile home.

Well Howdy There Bikes & Internet Articulated Lorry people and all those in-between

It's Troy again...

Today's headache brought to you by Facebook...

Their ads platform actually works for authors. Readers actually click on our ads and purchase stuff.

So, one of my author friends is THE FB ads guru (ess) what's a female guru???

I'm paying her biz for coaching - and yesterday was our first session. "OK, let's get all of the various FB parts moved into Meta Biz suite so you can share them with me, and you'll have better control"

Sounds good... but a wrinkle. Looks like I started my author FB pages under my OLD FB account that I deactivated. So, while I can do stuff on my FB Author page (not a generic personal login like y'all have... but a business page that looks like my author persona) I can't do it AS that author... seems to be "owned" by the old FB login. This happened only AFTER moving into the Business Suite that "Meta" is trying to get even low end people like me into... Blech...

That was a scary FB login when I was very active in the con side of poly-tics. I got out just before the red hats started showing up. I had a secondary FB login, and I *THOUGHT* I moved access to that profile.

Looks like Access and Ownership are different... So, I am in the process of getting that old account reactivated. But, FB said, here's 20 of your "Friends" from that page... pick three that will confirm your identity...

OY VEY! These are all folks that I barely knew. I suspect it's because we were 👍ing each other's memes... I don't have their contact info.... they're some rando person who's politics and mine have gone far far away and I don't have them on my new FB friends list.

Wait.... here's a photog buddy....✅
And one of the political types from the other end... I'm connected to his wife on FB for our love of wines ✅
AND finally, a Libertarian power broker dude, but since I was in campaign staff for a LP candidate, he might remember me... (he did) ✅

Now it's just wait and hope they all confirm with FB for me.

Good morning language confused folks. English is a tough one to understand whether it’s the British, Australian or American versions. I generally figure it out.

I need to know, how many of you bring ANY documents home from work and file them away and forget?

Saw the musical Hadestown last night. It was a good time. Lots of masks being worn in audience, that was surprising but happy to see it.

Another quick trip stopped today because of snowy conditions around the state.

We have decided not to attend the UW Badger Women’s hockey games this weekend against ST. Thomas in Mendota Heights, Minnesota even though that was the plan. Also this means no stopping for me at Scale Model Supply in St. Paul this weekend. Weather warnings, more on the Wisconsin side then Minnesota are making us stay home. No matter the weather in March we will be in Minneapolis for the WCHA Conference hockey championship. I will get to Scale Model Supply then…

Took a day off from anything modeling related at home yesterday. I will get back to it today. I have 9 different things going at the modeling bench. But only 5 cars to weather. I use trays to keep each project separate. I have 3 sections of the layout back up but now have all 12 sections downstairs. This space is much larger than the area I used in the last house but this is also temporary.

The brother has been texting every other day asking if I am practicing my golf game. I have been but the knee is sore as explained by the Orthopedic Surgeon that is normal. Ice it and then a day off. When I explained to the brother the distance of the clubs is not great that concerned him, not my knee. He did ask though if I wanted a space in the workshop for a spray booth? Seems he and Terry are keen on getting me to Maui.

enjoy the day

SUV is a loaded term today. It used to mean truck based vehicles that had a large cabin instead of a bed. Things like the Chevy Suburban, Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee, Toyota Land Cruiser.

Later it was expanded to any sort of vehicle with heightened clearance etc including car based and the enlarged cabin. This leads to subclasses like "Crossover" which is a "Crossover SUV"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUV

In the US a pickup is a small truck (compared to commercial sized box over, articulated, etc) with an open bed with sides. Whether a 4x4 or 4x2.

At least according to how I've always seen the terms used.

There is a big difference between a true pickup truck and an SUV based on a truck frame like a Suburban. With a pickup truck, you can get a lot of play between the bed and the cab. The bed can rock a bit without transferring all that energy to the cab area. You will often note that a pickup has a better GVWR and towing capacity than a comparably sized and equipped SUV, and also the unitized body of trucks like the Avalanche and Honda Ridgeline

Edit to add that the VW Touareg has a towing capacity of 7,770 pounds, and had the best towing capacity of any mid-sized SUV. BUt that towing capacity comes with a lot of added weight, and a transmission with really aggressive gearsets that give that kind of towing capacity from a V-6. Quite impressive!

and also the unitized body of trucks like the Avalanche and Honda Ridgeline
The Avalanche was a full frame truck, not unibody.

Now that I think about it, I can't think of a GM truck with a unibody with the exception of the HHR, which is classified as a truck by the industry.(likewise Chrysler's PT Cruiser)
Ford's Maverick, the Ridgeline and the Hyundai Santa Fe are the only unibody trucks out there right now.
