Good evening all. After a number of days of freezing weather, the temperature rose to 14C. It should get warmer by the weekend! Still raining off course.

Inspection Cars around 1912

Little River Railroad (No it is not Dawn taking me to hospital)

Mechanical inspector was here and approved the installation of the new water heater.

Ironically, according to the appropriate code, had I purchased and self installed a new gas water heater, in my owner occupied home, or owner occupied two family, I would not have had to obtain a permit nor seek inspection. However, if I hire a contractor to install the similar gas water heater, for my owner occupied home or two family, then I am required to obtain a permit...$89.00...and have the installation inspected. That's Statewide code interpretation of the national mechanical code. Supposedly, required to protect the consumer from shoddy work by contractors.

Currently 28° and cloudy....not sure if we will get the promised >1" snowfall or not. Moderation tomorrow, may go above freezing. Mid 50s by next Tuesday.

Willie I'm not so sure the ladder is positioned high enough on the roof when that guy wants to come down? People make this mistake when going on the roof to remove snow etc.

Yes, I am well aware of that. I had to take OSHA training for over 35 years including the dreaded 30 hour training at least three times, and the 10 hour training yearly! I cannot even count the number of times that I saw our maintenance department use ladders that were too short. Response from their supervisor was usually something along the lines of "How long are you willing to wait for that piece of equipment while we go and find a rental ladder long enough?"

Good Morning All!
32F @ 82% with partly. To be 43F later today. 50F come Monday and nighttime is above 34F for the next week or so. Goodie!

Terry - Printers: Had the obsolescence problem with my HP HL2430ln and W10. Fixed that by loading the HP universal PCL 6 driver in W10; Linux don't care, just keeps on trucking. No clue if Canon has something like that to make things easier. Old Brother ( HL-L2350dw ) got fixed using the Micro$oft IPP driver. Guess that the bottom line is try a generic driver. All of our printers are on the net, not USB connected so your mileage may vary. Heck, you might even get an older Linux based winterm just for your printer(s). They don't take up much space, and connected via Ether or WiFi, you can VNC in to play with stuff if needed once you get it set up.

Canon ( .et.al ) make more money selling ink than they ever will just selling new models. Although a few years back when we did have ink jets, it was cheaper to buy a new one vs ink. No clue of that has changed or not. Oh, give DoorStepInk.com a try when needed - pretty reasonable ink prices.

CostCo, Chef Store and that real meat market in Spo tomorrow. Suspect that we will be outa here about 7 with breakfast along the way somewhere. New restaurant/cafe in Athol we have heard good things about, so will probably give it a go on the way home.

Will take camera and hopefully BNSF cooperates; and want to see if the 2nd railroad bridge over the Spo River just east of Pines Road is indeed started.

Afternoon all,

Talk of printers reminds me that after I got fiber internet and had to buy my own WiFi router, my 10 year old HP all-in-one quit working wirelessly appear. Works fine as a USB wired printer. Finally had time to diagnose it over the weekend, turns out it's a WEP protocol only and my router uses WPA1, WPA2 and WPA3 protocols. Just means I need to transfer documents between my computers to print from the desktop the printer is connected to. A pain, but way cheaper than a new printer. It is technically still supported by Win 11 24H2 (latest release).

Yes I'm getting cheap!!!

It is usually possible with a bit of technical savviness and some Googleing around to find a solution to running "old" tech on modern machines. It took a bit of doing and some trial and error but I have a Windows 11 PC that now happily connects to a twenty year old Kodak photo printer and a twenty six year old HP Jornada PDA.

I now have to buy a new one. One that will most likely have wifi connectivity, and if nothing else that means more data to collect and sell. If the replacement is HP, I will also have to buy a recurring ink subscription.
How does that benefit M$ ? M$ is the one that seems to be dropping support for it, not Canon. And how does Canon benefit if you have to buy another one? Being pissed off you're not likely to buy another Canon.

Incidentally this is why I use laser printers that use industry standard communications layers to work. My two main printers are an HP 2100 rgar I got in the late 1990s (around 1999 IIRC) and an older Konica Minolta color laser that is probably 10 years old or 12 years old. I also have a Brotehr all-in-one (printer, scanner, copier) that is about 20 years old that still works and I use occasionally. They all use standard printing protocols and so work with a generic driver if the vendor specific one is discontinued for it.

Willie you went to the same classes I went to, but I also had to attend the Indian Point nuclear power plant classes because the union sent me there for the outages. I didn't last long though and told my union to get me out of there. 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. I lasted 2 weeks on that schedule. The people who stayed made a lot of money.

Why not just update the driver file from Canon?
Well after reading more posts, I'm guessing they are not offering an updated driver.
The driver file was the latest, direct from Canon's website.
The computer and the Windoze laptop both never completed the installation process, they kept forgetting there was a printer connected to a USB port.
After screwing around for nearly 2 hours total between the two, I gave up and dug the Macbook out. Everything installed properly and promptly on it, but I did get that warning. So the printer is on borrowed time.

I miss Windows 7. It worked very well and was not so personally invasive. It just worked !

I own a 24 inch wide color scanner that I use to scan 24 x 36 drawings to send to my customers.
When Windows 10 came out, the scanner company did not offer a new driver update stating that their scanners were already 10 years old and most folks had updated to newer models. Well. I pulled out my old Windows 7 computer and use it as a dedicated computer (not connected to the internet) for my scanner. It is still working today, both the scanner and computer.

I have two high powered desk top computers that I use now but Microsoft says neither are suitable for Win 11 update. "Bull$#it".
I am really fed up with Microsoft and their efforts to control and eavesdrop on all we do and say. All I want is a good solid operating system.......much like Windows 7.

Just my views.....John

Thank you!

Yeah, east and west from Ayer MA to Mechanicville NY & north and south from Claremont NH to Providence RI.

Hey, I know where Ayer is. Their HS was our football rival when I was young. We used to go to Ft Devens regularly as our church had permission to hold some youth classes during the week at their generic post chapel since part of our congregation was military stationed there.

Good luck with the job. Sounds very interesting.

It’s a small world I guess lol. I’ve passed through Ayer but never really spent any significant time there.

Thank you! It is definitely different than any of my prior work experience, that’s for sure haha. Spent the day today learning to work the hump in East Deerfield.
