Smoke alarms... they go bad, sometimes and chirp because of that.

I've had two cases of the hard wired ones going bad. One in LA when we lived in a 60-unit apartment building. It made the red alarm box with light on the wall chirp... in our bedroom...

and another time in a hotel. Same thing, the smoke detector was hard wired, and chirping. I had to go down at midnight and request another room.

You may need to get a new detector.

Good morning, all! It's a cool, gray and overcast day here in H-Town. There is a 70% chance of rain this afternoon. Should be a train room afternoon.

Terry - Likewise here. Our temp is supposed to drop to 27 Wednesday night Thursday morning. We have been in the mid 60's.
TomO - Like Shortwrench, I was waiting for "and I threw it out the window"
Wille - Back when I was still a kid living in NYC, there was a whole category called sick jokes.
"Mommy why do I walk around in circles?", "Shut up or I'll nail your other shoe to the floor".
There were a few others I remember but would probably be considered insensitive. As kids though, they were funny as hell.

STAY SAFE

Afternoon all,

Sitting in the Doctor's office as I had to be an Uber driver for the boy as his mom didn't want him driving to Wichita in the crap that has now developed. We've had another couple of inches and the wind is doing a good job of blowing it around. Temps are dropping as we're currently at 1°.

Karl: Great job on the Sears house.

BBL if my hands stay warm enough.

Some of the younger people around Jersey just call the Fire Department and report a smoke alarm activation. Engine companies in some locations carry replacement detectors.

I have replaced all of the hard wired smoke detectors in my house several times over. Most Carbon Monoxide detectors have a seven year service life. My most recent replacement in the hall on the first floor, was a combination hard wired smoke and carbon monoxide detector. The new one has a 10 year life span. Others are at basement level and second floor. In addition each bedroom and the garage have battery powered smoke detectors. I change the batteries every March at the time change. With all of that, occasionally, one will chirp.

@NYC_George are you not scared, that an engine could fall off the cliff? for me that track would be too close to the edge, but overall looking good. i like the coal building in the back.
Yeah I would install a small plexiglass retaining wall along the lip an inch or two with track that close to the edge. Enough that a derailment would be caught and kept off the floor. I’ve had one or two engines fall off onto concrete and one had a small part or two go missing. (Mine are N scale). Mine wasn’t through derailment but someone bumping the table hard.

Smoke alarms by code in Utah have to be hardwired with battery backup IIRC (for the ones required by code -- extras can be just battery). You need one CO alarm on each floor. I installed hardwired First Alert that use a 10 year battery (a lithium 9V) so I won't have to get ladders out until they need to be replaced.

Our old house needed new ones and I reported it to the land lord but their office just told me "we have a schedule we replace them on". Obviously not, as we had been there 10 years. The chirp always seems to happen around 3am. As they age they will start chirping no matter what the battery state is. To get them to stop I would just remove them from the ceiling.

I did buy a First Alert with built in Airplay speaker a while back and never opened it. I may extend the smoke detector wiring into one of my under garage workshop areas as we work on finishing the basement. I'll put that one in there.

This is also hard wired, all 10 are! They are 1st Alert units. While at the work session at the friends house on Tuesday I found out how to disconnect the unit entirely. Today I will take the one off the ceiling in the train room and see the build date. If they are past the 10 year build dates I’ll be buying all new ones.
