Louis, Tom is right, You have gone far above and beyond trying to help your friend. Smudge is also correct, his wife needs to get involved. When I had my stroke (wow, 12 years ago!) my biggest motivator was my marriage. If you can get his wife involved and visiting him, it should help and may be the key.
Thank you, Karl.
Louis- I'm very sorry to hear about your friend and his wife. You have gone well beyond what a good friend would be expected to do. You are a good man.
Thank you, Curt. That is very nice of you to say. Coming from you it means a lot to me.

I really appreciate everyone's comments.

I don't know what I can do about Willy's wife. Willy did everything for her. He took care of the bills, cooked, cleaned and worked 5, 6 even 7 days a week sometimes. She is recovering alcohol and is taking medication from doctors. She used to smoke weed for "anxiety" Willy even supplied that. She is like a zombie. I don't think she is cheating on him. The one outstanding quality she had faded with her youth, speed up by the alcohol. Seems to me she has the mental capacity of a child.

One thing I will do is keep trying. I refuse to give up on my buddy.

Willy and I come from the bottom. We were two young teenagers with no guidance or support. But we always worked hard every day. Willy has always despised conflict. I tended to stray from the straight and narrow. I also had a knack for finding trouble. Willy never once failed to watch my back. I remember him telling me one night when we went out to have fun. "Can we not get into any shit tonight, please?".

The stories I could tell you, you probably would not believe many of them. Sometimes I can't believe the things i got involved in. I was always looking for a short cut up. To give you an idea. I went to Dundalk leather co to buy a jacket. I picked the Brooks highway jacket because it was so thick a knife would not penetrate it. Willy bought one the next day.

I never robbed anybody or hurt an innocent person. But I was involved in the supply chain of the most violent trade in Baltimore for a brief time. Back then the nickname people used behind my back was "screwy Louie" because i was crazy mean if you fight with me. Nobody ever called me that to my face. Willy told me about it.

No matter how much it was against his nature, Willy always watched my back. He seldom had to fight because he was a big athletic scary-looking individual. Having his 300lbs behind me was reassuring in a street fight. Willy could have played nose guard in college football.

One night Willy and I went to the old Coast to Coast nightclub on the west side. I decided to try the nose candy most everyone was using, and I was distributing. The next day Willy told me "If you ever use that again don't come around me". That was the end of that. I knew I could trust Willy. He probably saved my life.

Soon after I got a woman who became my first wife pregnant. I quit drinking and partying all together. Daddies are not supposed to be stoned or have to run from blue lights. The marriage did not work, but I kept it clean ever since.

Bottom line, I owe Willy. I will always have his back.

Good afternoon all.

We survived the slumber party last night with little to no drama!

After a quick house pick up and some laundry the wife took our daughter shopping for an outfit for spring School pictures. Left me home with the dog.

Going to head down to the basement and pick a train chore, and try to stay on track (pun intended).

Have a great Saturday all!

Thanks Smudge, sharing your personal experience has given me some ideas and best of all, hope.

I will never give up on him.

I do have some good news. I called every day, but sometimes he would not answer. Lately he has been answering every time or calling me back if he was sleeping.
It's not a problem, it can get to everyone after a while, I know it hasn't been easy on you and the wife to try and stay positive, I'm sure there have been days when it has got you down.

I'm glad to hear he now responds to your phone calls, that's a positive sign, if you can get his wife to go visit on a regular basis that will go a long way to his accepting his present circumstance (which you have to do to move forward) and know that he is still valued and needed as a husband by probably the one person he needs most to hear it from. (although I think she will have some explaining to do as why she hasn't visited)

While I was in the hospital I saw many elderly men and women (I was 10 days shy of my 35th birthday) kind of give up after their amputation, most had diabetes, they thought their world was over, I found a kick up the pants usually worked along with lots of encouragement from family and friends. Seems the more sympathy you give them the more despondent they become, as they feel they are a burden to everyone.

PM me if you think I can help with anything, or even if you just want to vent at someone other than your wife. :)

EDIT

Just spotted your other post to Bruette, I don't know if you can, or even how, but you saying Willy's wife is a former alcoholic is worrying, if she's fallen off the wagon that would explain her absence, and as he did all their finances etc, she could well be over her head, as Willy's not around she could well have some "well meaning" friends who are supposedly "helping"I'm sure you get my meaning.

Whatchya all reading?

I'm about to crack this open (on the tablet).

Why? Because a new game in the Pike and Shotte era is coming out, and US education in my time stopped at the two oceans, and both national borders. Learned a lot about pilgrims, GW, and a ton about that war between the states.

So, when I asked "Wasn't the English Civil war part of the... wait? When did the English have a civil war that didn't involve the French? And did it really last 30 years?" my Internationally based gamer friends rolled their eyes and told me to go get this book.

Proto freelancing is a very interesting concept and one to consider, running an imaginary railroad that appears all too real.
The latest (90th Anniversary) edition of Railroad Model Craftsman revisits the V&O and Proto freelancing. It's always been an interesting concept, that I suppose my model railroad follows, at least to some degree. When you stop and think about it, most of our model railroads are to some extent proto freelance layouts, because it is virtually impossible to model even a six mile long Chester & Delaware River (Reading), in 55 linear ft., let alone a Western Maryland or B&O, no matter how closely one adheres to prototype fidelity.

The V&O, did appear to be real, closely following the practices of an Appalachian Coal Road with contemporary Blue diesels. I was greatly influenced by Mr. McClelland, and his layout.

Actual location last summer, the Reading is gone, and the PRR remains, under the Conrail flag, using Blue and Black engines instead of green and black.

Morning all,

36 degrees to stay the day but going up to 50. Looks like we might touch 60 degrees tomorrow.

Off to a slow start this morning. Made omelets for the family this morning. Other than that it’s been relaxing and relaxing quiet.

Check back later.
Have a beautiful Sunday!

Good Morning All. Foggy and 45° on the SFW estate, headed up to 70° later today. 80° by Tuesday. High wind advisory for later today beginning around 4:00 pm. Still have a pop-up thunderstorm in the forecast for around midnight tonight. So far, our winter has been overall warmer and drier than average. We had some single digit weather back before Christmas, but mostly it's been above 40°, and we've had many days above 75°. And more than the normal number of nights when we opened the window in the bedroom.

I'm getting ready to put a corned beef into the slow cooker for supper tonight. I bought five of them when they were on sale prior to last year's St Patrick's Day. That's coming up soon so I need to make room in the freezer for resupply. This is the last one.
Spent a little time in the garden yesterday, hoeing and breaking up the soil surface along the rows that I have already planted. Today I will go in between the onion rows. Still doing a little spot mowing here and there. The dry winter has helped there.

Limited time out in the train shed yesterday, but I got a lot accomplished. I added ground cover to some of the areas around the Ethanol refinery and will continue that today. I'll take some pictures when I get more accomplished.
Over on the workbench I pulled up the next structure from Logan Valley, Ed's Market. This one made the trip from Montana without any issues, I poked out one window while cleaning it up. Easy fix.

This is another of Chet's finely detailed interiors that I am now proud to own. A lot of work went into this structure and other than a sidewalk, I don't intend to make any upgrades or improvements as it doesn't need any.

I will however, replace the lighting, as it doesn't seem to be working for me. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

Joe - I have been really enjoying the current day railfan pictures that you are posting. I don't see eastern RR's here obviously. I also don't have a lot of time to surf the net looking for them.
Louis - So sad to read about your friend, Willy. It's so sad that some people just give up on life so easily. We had an overweight diabetic friend who never really took care of himself and had one leg amputated and a prosthetic put in place. Soon after he got gangrene in the other leg and never bothered going to the doctor. He was just 53.
Many kudos to you for your continuing support for Willy. I hope that your efforts to bring his wife around are more successful in the future.
Chris - One of the keys to successfully painting white metal castings that I have learned, is to prime everything with a cheap primer after cleaning up the flash. Here I use Krylon white primer that I get at Walmart. Painting is a lot easier after that. There is still intricate painting to be done at times that requires patience. Gorilla Super Glue works real well for assembly if you can get it across the pond.
Absolute great response to Louis regarding his friend.
Karl - I'm with you on Lima Beans and Eggplant, but I love all kinds of Squash, both Summer and Winter types. However being originally a Yankee, I still haven't ever gotten into Okra.

Everyone have a wonderful Sunday.

Good morning. It looks like a nice Sunday morning out there. High 40’s later today.

I am all hockeyed out for the weekend. I am not going to the grandson’s 10AM game but might go to his 2. The Wisconsin Badger Women won yesterday so it is onto Minneapolis next weekend for the conference championship. Nationally they are ranked 6th and in the conference 3rd. We are not going next weekend as we will be at the grandson youth games for State. Party time. My brother flies in Tuesday night and my sister Wednesday. The son and friend ( not classified as his girlfriend yet) fly in Friday morning. The niece and her boyfriend will be flying in I was informed last night from NYC instead of from LA.

Had a great German meal out including a liter of a dark German beer. I have shared a couple sips of Terry’s beers since Christmas but that was my first of my own for 2023. Needless to say my Glucose Blood sugars numbers were sky high last night for me. 188 at midnight bedtime but 123 waking up at 6. Already have the 2 miles in on the treadmill and a hot shower.

A quick grocery run to pickup items the guests like. Other than that a kind of laid back day.

enjoy the day

Willie: SA-31 was my regular assignment, off and on for 10 years. Working the Freehold Branch, Hightstown Industrial, Dayton Branch, the C&A (Amboy Secondary), the Coast Line, (NY&LB), and the Southern, (former CNJ), the SA-31 got around. Honestly, I never noticed some of the more scenic portions of the route, when I was working. Plus, I am amused by the use of CSX, (and NS), power. The threat (or promise) of short lining portions of the territory, dates back to the 1990s, after Stanley Crane's retirement as CEO, but have recently accelerated due to pressure on the parent carriers by "private capital".

The photos of the Chester Branch / Chester Industrial, reflect contemporary operation on what was my old stomping ground, long before I hired on the Railroad. While I also ran on that line in the late 1970s, when business was greater, the line was ignored by railfans, probably due to the neighborhood we operated through.

There are more railfans following both lines than ever before, although the Jersey lines always attracted fans and followers.

I mostly seek out photos of lines I actually worked on, rather than somewhere that I'm not familiar with.
