I'm at my wits end. Some may remember my old friend Willy had a catastrophic health problem in February 2022. He is now wasting away in a nursing home. He is doing well physically. He no longer has type II diabetes or any other chronic problem. He has lost an enormous amount of weight. What worries me is he is doing nothing!

I can't find out if he is refusing physical therapy or not getting any. Nobody will speak to me, and he tells me they aren't doing anything. His wife is all but useless, she knows nothing. I gave them each cell phones and I am footing the bill. But they don't speak to each other for weeks at a time. I know his wife is overwhelmed and they are both depressed. His wife was the stereotypical "dumb blond" She was a real beauty, now she is just dumb. She has a heart of gold, but that won't get the job done.

I know he needs to have a second cut on his leg where they amputated his foot. I'm told the first was called an emergency "guillotine cut" and is not suitable for a prosthetic foot. They had no choice as his body had become septic, he is lucky to be alive. He has to go back to the original hospital for the second cut he tells me. I wonder if he is doing nothing until they get him out of the nursing home.

I gave him a tablet, and this is the second smart phone. He broke both of those. I wonder how long the second phone will last. I guess it is good he turned down the laptop i wanted to give him. I want to get him another tablet or a laptop, but he said, "this is fine". He did manage to set up a twitter account, which is something. I've been trying to encourage him to start a pod cast, a blog or better yet both! I told him I will cover the expense. I'm not worried about how much I have spent and will keep spending. Please Willy, do something, anything!

As far as I know he has not even filed for social security disability.

He is still over one hundred miles away from us. I go to see him as much as I can. The problem is we are overbooked and have truly little time. We do keep him stocked with diet mountain dew and anything he asks for. It takes a minimum of three hours for us to see him. He goes through a case of soda every 10 days or less. If he were close, I would go see him every day.

His wife is less than 15 minutes from him and has only seen him once. That was to pick up his severance check from his former employer. She could not even manage to cash that. We had to pick it up and cash it for her. I told my friend I would hold the money for him until he gets out, he says "no that's ok, send it to her".

How do you help people that won't help themselves? I'm trying to stay positive and encourage him.

My wife is taking a well-deserved nap. I'm waiting for the sun to get higher so I can replace the front brakes on our Sonic. My beagles are with me on the couch.

I'm sorry to whine to all of you, this is the only place I blow off steam. Now you know why you have not seen much of me.

A few years ago I did a Dance move on the driveway, I still hurt from it. I hate getting old. Kids are here so We have a house full. Made pancakes this am, we dont do greens at this house but wife will make an occasional salad, I call lettuce natures toilet paper.

Good morning from Wisconsin.

1” of heavy but blowing snow was coming down as we left campus and the hockey last night. The 12 mile drive that normally take 20 minutes took 45. We did though a couple times get passed by the idiots doing 75-80 on roads you couldn’t see the dividing lines. I believe just at the exit one of them was off to the side by a couple hundred feet.

High 20’s now heading to high 30’s hopefully melting the crap on the driveway and sidewalk. I don’t want to shovel and it doesn’t look like enough for the blower.

Hockey at 3, followed by dinner out. I will check today on the 3 Covered Hopper cars that were clear coated yesterday to finish a commissioned project and then my own batch of reefer cars and 4 boxcars to start new ones.

enjoy the day

Good Morning All. Cloudy here and 36°. High today around 50° with a return to the mid-70's tomorrow for a few days.. Might be a short rain event near midnight tomorrow, but with the weather people around here, one never knows.

No Cosori Air Fryer here, thank you Troy.

Mundane day yesterday when I was not in the train shed. Mostly boring household chores. For good measure, after I went for a walk, I split two very tough logs. Even though they have been "drying" for 16 months, I fear that they may still be too "green" for good heating. They'll burn slowly but might add a disproportionate amount of creosote to the chimney, maybe. Otherwise, it was not too pleasant outside, cold and windy but at least 50°.

Thanks for the comments and reactions regarding the post yesterday.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I added lighting, figures, plant barrels and grain sacks to the Augies Ag Supply structure that I got from Chet.

I also inspected Robert's Milling & Cabinets.

I had to make one minor repair to reattach the stairs to the right. I am contemplating this structure some more. I have several places where it will fit and be appropriate, but I now see that the loading dock on the left side could possibly be used alongside a rail siding for lumber deliveries. I have to think about this some more. On my layout, I can never have too many switching destinations.:) Figures and details will be added as appropriate when I finally "plant" it.

Rob - Sad to read that the layout will be coming down soon. Hopefully it is to either expand or because an upcoming move will allow a larger area to use.
Chris - Get recovered from the fall soon.
I'm not too sure what you are picturing with those white metal castings, but I don't mind working with them. Cleaning the flashing is the hard part. Those castings appear to be relatively clean to begin with. I have seen far worse.
Troy - My wife does not like "translating" for me. She claims that the hearing aids should work better. Well they work fine, I can make them louder but that only makes the garble louder. Folks who don't use them don't seem to understand that issue. Telephones are my biggest enemy.
Louis - While I like cauliflower in many ways, I do draw the line on pizza crust. The unfortunate thing with me is that I cannot grow it in my garden, the climate here is just not conducive.
Moermusic - That's certainly a switch, son taking Dad out for son's Birthday! Quite a trip planned all of the way from Alberta.
Sherrel - Maybe we could all use one of those "Fetterman" screens.

George Harrison would have been 80 years old today. RIP
Everyone have a great day.

Yeah, their not to bad, it's just the painting I don't like doing and putting the levers together will be time consuming I know, first I need to build some sort of counter for all the equipment to fit on, I can do that no problem, I'm just not good with finicky items, I'm all thumbs and fat fingers when it comes to this sort of detail, but my fault, I could have left the signal box empty, but it just wouldn't look right.

Morning all,

Odd Saturday in that I'm NOT working. finally 28° and cloudy. Supposed to be in the mid 40's later. Talk tomorrow of possible severe storms in the area. Spent much of the morning so far catching up on some chores and since I had to go out to the shed, decided to pull the battery off the riding mower and charge it (or attempt to) before I need to use the mower and can't due to the battery being dead. 23 Hp 2 cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine. I will need to change the oil and filter later. Then had to clean and lube the padlock on the shed door as it opened hard and wouldn't close. Working fine now. Just been an odd winter so far.

Smudge: Be careful falling on your butt, it's already cracked. 😉

Willie,

Knowing your disdain for all things phone tech, what works for me probably won't work for you.

Like TomO's wife, I use the bluetooth between my hearing aids and phone a TON. Best way to get a phone call. Sometimes the "smart" phone gets dumb and shoves the sound out via the phone's speaker, but I tap a few icons on the phone, and sound is in my ears. Better than a phone ever was.

But, like I said, you'd need to upgrade your phone to one with bluetooth, and make sure your hearing aids have the ability to handle that as well. My two year old ones from Costco do so well.

Whine away! I also feel this place allows me to let go or ramble on and folks are understanding

My feelings are you have gone above and beyond what a good friend would do. The problem is unless he signs away some control to you and the wife goes along, you can’t do anything more. Strange that even with a wife like you described the dumb ones are usually clingy and Dependent on their partners. Sounds to me that someone else is now controlling her.

With his support you can move to some legal steps to help him but trend carefully. Something in all this just seems fishy, especially the financial end

WOW! It's a shame he feels the way he does, but I can understand it, when this kind of thing happens to someone they tend to retreat into themselves and it takes a lot to get themselves motivated, you feel like your life as you know it is over, which is true but you learn to adapt, but again it's down to themselves and family and friends to help them see that although difficult, life does go on and you can still have a life. I know I've been there.

Don't give up on him, I appreciate it is extremely difficult for you and your wife, he and you may not realise it but your probably the only person who hasn't given up on him, keep trying, with your help he will recover, but you need to get through to his wife, she HAS to go see him, everyday if possible, she may not realise it but she is hindering his recovery and causing his depression to worsen, because he feels rejected, he feels he is the man he longer was, and she no longer loves him, this is the woman he has spent many years with, love of his life, she has the power, she just needs to realise that she can do so much for him simply by being there now, when he needs her the most.

Don't give him anymore electronic devices, the reason they got broken is because he got frustrated and threw them into a wall or floor, a (very cheap) phone, yes, but nothing else, it;s not his mind he need to exercise so much as his body, until he realises that despite the amputation, the rest of his body still works exactly as it used to, again this all down to him being severely depressed about what's happened.

Phone him, 2-3-4 times a week, if only for 5 mins, that will do two things, 1) he wont smash the phone, and 2) he will know someone actually cares, because in his mind, his wife doesn't, but again, you have to give his wife the proverbial (extremely large) kick up the butt, she's there, she has to help, to show he is still the man she loves despite this.

Actually I do have an app on the phone that connects it directly to the hearing aids. But it only works between the phone and the hearing aids. It's the people speaking on the other end that give me fits, especially those with foreign accents. It's also persons speaking directly with me, unless I can see their lips which helps in a lot of cases. The hearing aid folks have indicated that their technicians are working on filters that will help, but they aren't ready for the general public yet. Still won't work on people with "marbles in their mouths".

Joe Kepner was General Foreman, Electric Loco Shop the entire time I was at Wilmington...(as a Fireman, Engineer, and Road Foreman). He knew everything about the GG-1, a wealth of knowledge. Of course, that was after the 1964 reorganization, while the Photo was in the 1950s. Joe K walked the entire shop and yard each morning around 0530, and was generally there until 4:30 PM, if not later. Learned a lot from him.
Thanks for your info. Does the name Harry the hat ring a bell for the 1950's ?

Good afternoon gang!

Brrr cold with snow flurries, good day for the basement!

Got up at 8, ordered 200 linear feet of 1/8 x 1 1/4" clear pine for use as spline roadbed. I have a buddy that is piggybacking my order on his own spline order, plus other widths for use as removable coal loads. He has over 350 coal cars,, all need loads made for all. His upcoming layout with be HUGE!!!!

After that took SWMBO to Wally World, got some new sneakers and jeans, plus some Cricut items for her , then off to Home Depot. While traversing the parking lot, I'm sure everyone has seen the SLOW markings plus the STOP markings painted on the pavement. As I was going over a SLOW marking this idiot passed me on the left and blew through the STOP marking ahead! The guy ahead at the next SLOW mark must have seen this , as he moved to his left far enough to block the idiot but not block oncoming cars. I then made a left and found a parking spot on the end of the aisle, while the other guy and oncoming traffic kept the offender trapped! Karma!

Louis, Tom is right, You have gone far above and beyond trying to help your friend. Smudge is also correct, his wife needs to get involved. When I had my stroke (wow, 12 years ago!) my biggest motivator was my marriage. If you can get his wife involved and visiting him, it should help and may be the key.

On cauliflower and other veggies. Cauliflower has always been a favorite, along with Broccoli. Either raw with Ranch dip, steamed or broiled, however it's prepared. The only veggies I won't eat is Lima beans, eggplant or squash.

Gonna work on my Sylvan firetruck today, and put up a shelf, maybe carry some firewood.

You're telling me :p

They say we got about 18" but drifts make it much deeper in some area, and in some areas a lot ess.

I finally made it up to our house construction early evening, around 5:30pm. I spent about 2 hours shoveliungt it out and got a path up the driveway some and over to a door and along a wall for a while inside the main floor. Slow going as I had to walk each shovel back out to the garage and then to the front of the house area to dump it.

The "Honey Bucket" port-a-potty was inundated. The spring that keeps the door close popped out and was lost a few months ago and their weekly service people have not done anything about it... I need to call them and complain

View attachment 162924

When I had not gotten much shoveled yet (and blown drifts against the wall make it more than 2 feet or 2 1/2 feet):

View attachment 162925

More of the floor. The darker ones were later and after I had shoveled to the door into the actual house. By the time I was done it was dark and had been for 30-45 minutes and so no pics of the progress inside.

View attachment 162926View attachment 162923View attachment 162922

It will be a few days before we can get to actual construction again. The guy and his son, who I hired to help and how we've made a ton of progress in the last 2 weeks, came down today and called and said there was not even any place to park (the city had only made one narrow pass with he plow as of now) and he said he would bring his skid loader tomorrow and clean up a space to park and clear the snow away from the house. I'll go up and shovel more and get my son to help and Saturday we'll probably be shoveling it all out. More snow is forecast next week but on scattered days and only 30-50% probability, without mention of accumulation. Hopefully it means just small dustings or an inch or whatever. Need to get back to actual work. This is pushing us a week behind or more and I want to get the main walls all done by end of March if possible so the rough roof (sheathing) can be put on and protect the insides from the weather...

--

On a totally different front I found out about a "new" DCC digital model railroad company based in Holland called "YaMoRC" -- "Yet another Model railroad Company". (yamorc.de) It was founded by an engineer who actually desinged and programmed all the DR4xxx and DR5xxx command centers and modules for Digikeijs, also a Dutch company (who are sold in the US by Iron Planet Hobbies -- the DR5000 command center, which I use is one of those). It turns out in 2019 this guy and Digikeijs parted ways and he went on and has made new stuff of his own. The physical looks are like the Digikeijs stuff. They have a few things available now but are releasing their own command center and a bunch of other stuff throughout 2023. I am excited to try out their command center as I expect it be like a DR5000 on steroids. Unfortunately they do not yet have a US distributor, which means I'll have to get it sent in from Europe (which is how I got my DR5000 and a few of my Digikeijs modules anyway, though the rest I got from Iron Planet Hobbies).

With my slow moving software project I am working on for iPhone and iPad and Mac (fancy smart throttle expanding to more DCC control app) I need to work with different command centers anyway so its an excuse and this new YD7100 (the DR5000 on steroids from all appearances) supports every protocol known to man so it is a good one to test against... (also an excuse to get a Z21 and the new ESU CabControl, made for US market command station :) ). After the house is done and moved in of course. I've not spent a lot of time on my project with the house project (though I do spend a few hours now and then as a distraction).
Chad- from midday Tuesday through Thursday evening we got about a foot of new snow. Add to the 2-3 inches we received on Monday and another inch or so last night, we got enough snow to reopen the snowmobile trails, which were closed last week due to insufficient snow base.

Afternoon All,

Started out with some chores then headed up to the train room. The new ladders were the correct width but a little short vertically between the rungs. This means 6 rungs instead of 5. Something I'll have to live with. Also, the sides are a little thicker. I was able to glue the resin ladder supports to the ladders. After lunch I glued the ladders (6) to the car. I still have some roof walkways to glue on tomorrow then the car is ready for painting. I want the glue to completely dry.

Joe- Nice photos. Sounds like FL weather with the ups and downs (winter), in summer it's always up .

Louis- I'm very sorry to hear about your friend and his wife. You have gone well beyond what a good friend would be expected to do. You are a good man.

Steve- Very pleasing paint scheme.

The other 2 sides are the same.

Thanks Smudge, sharing your personal experience has given me some ideas and best of all, hope.

I will never give up on him.

I do have some good news. I called every day, but sometimes he would not answer. Lately he has been answering every time or calling me back if he was sleeping.
