One of my favourite wagons to drive when I was a squaddie.

And at 4mpg, yes 4 glad I wasn't footing the fuel bill

And of course, my old wagon, bugger to drive, but no one cut me up with this load on.

G'nite folks.
Being in the Air Force this was my favorite aircraft. The A-10 Thunderbolt aka the Tank Killer.

- a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY, sorry it had to be a crappy one. Hope you feel better soon.
I did some other stuff this weekend besides take pictures of my truck collection. 🙂 I had to do some repair work for a friend.
The dark side of the second hand brass experience is having to fix issues, mistakes, and sometimes butchery done by a previous owner. These photos show a Westside GS-6 that belongs to a young friend of mine whose life I’m ruining by giving him the brass bug. He bought it from a popular dealer who will go unnamed, as none of this is their fault. No issues were visible until you got inside the thing, and it ran well enough, so they would have had no reason to do anything to it.
He wanted sound. The previous owner had re-motored, so half the usual work was done. Not very well, but he was on a budget, so the plan was to do a “good enough” job that was cost friendly. I installed a Lok Sound decoder and a sugar cube speaker. The Westside GS-4 through 6 have a ton of room inside the boiler and cab, so this was a clean install with no connectors between the loco and tender. The big problem was the motor. Someone didn’t understand the concept of clearance. It took a considerable amount of fiddling to get it inside the firebox. Sort of an interference fit. That all went OK. A few weeks later the rubber coupling between the motor and gearbox failed. Since I’m training him I told him to remove the chassis, and that’s where he got in trouble. The interference fit of the motor caused enough flexing to cause failure of the solder joints holding the rear chassis mount, and one of the booster engine steam pipes. The fix was to replace the motor with one that would fit without any problems, and do the repairs. It took resistance gear, and without the factory jigs, getting that rear mount back in plumb was an interesting experience. There was no way to clamp it in place so I ended up screwing it to the chassis, dropping the chassis into place and mounting the front truck. That gave me proper positioning and a way to hold it in place without slow roasting my fingers. The steam pipe was also a bit of a challenge because there wasn’t much room to work with the soldering tweezers.
The other problem was Walthers Goo. For some years now I’ve thought you should need a permit for buying Goo. It’s probably the most misused material that ever found its way into the hobby, and has NO place anywhere in a brass model. Some idiot had Gooed the motor in place, and there was so much Goo in the boiler for no apparent reason that it boggled the mind. The mission seemed to be to use up an entire tube of the stuff. If this were my model, I’d have soaked it in lacquer thinner which I’ve found is the only way to remove cured Goo, then done a complete re-paint, but, its not mine and he’s on a budget. The photos speak for themselves. Yuck! But it will run properly and make noise. I hate shoddy workmanship!
🤬
Next up I have to do some file work to clean up excess solder, touch up the paint, and close her up.

Wow Alan, it looks like you are surgically excising a tumor from that poor old loco!

You betcha! I need a bunch more of these guys for my cement plant!View attachment 141003View attachment 141004
I'd rather have the old Macks than the newer International Harvester trucks.

Karl - I feel your pain! I remember as a kid growing up in Michigan, I saw many of those ready-mix plants (some of them actually served by rail!) with a large fleet of those Mack 'B' cab cement mixers parked in a row, and think to myself how cool it would be to have something like that in miniature. Fast forward 30 years later, and Athearn starts making them. At that time I was financially strapped paying for my kids' college educations, so I figured I'd buy a dozen of them a few years later when I had more disposable income. Well...so much for that fantasy...☹️

On the model rr front, I have acquired ~80% of the raw materials I need to construct a sub-surface mechanism to turn my rotary coal dumper. On Saturday, I received two 12 VDC motors geared-down to ~40rpm max rotating speed, then went to HD and bought some 5/16" diameter dowel stock, then to Advance auto to get ~24 inches of Neoprene rubber fuel hose with an inside diameter of 5/16" to connect each motor shaft to a dowel. The dumper will sit on these two neoprene-covered dowels and [hopefully] be turned by them as they spin in unison.

I'm hoping to get start on the project Tuesday afternoon. First phase is to construct the mechanism; the next will be to get it perfectly positioned to align the dumper with with the rails.

Good Night - and have a Pleasant Tomorrow!

Thank you Alan 🙂! I agree, discontinuing their line of the Mack trucks left a terrible void for those of us in 1:87 scale who want to populate their layouts with trucks. I remember reading somewhere that another manufacturer of O scale vehicles sued them for patent infringement [?] so they were force to stop making the Macks. (Of course the plaintiff company never bothered to make their own 1:87 line of Mack trucks!)

The gas station is a City Classics kit, one of the earliest structure kits that I bought shortly after I re-entered the hobby 30 years ago. It's been painted for 3 separate brands of gasoline over the years [LOL].
Yes, the company was First Gear, and it was, you’ll pardon the expression “a dick move” 🤬

Good morning Everybody!

Terry, how is Sherrel?

I made a pot of coffee, first time this year. Normally all I do is push the button. Proof that my wife is human. Not a bad thing, sometimes I wonder how anyone can be so perfect.
We somehow seem to always end up with a half cup of coffee left over from yesterday. I love that cold half cup. One pack of sweetener, top the cup off with half and half, mmm. My idea of instant coffee.

Not much to say otherwise. Taxes are on my mind, but I'll keep that to myself. Other than to say, I don't like seeing that many zeros leave my bank accounts! Death and taxes... what can you do?

Oh yeah, checks, I don't write many. A few vendors prefer checks. I understand, when they cut deep discounts processing fees matter. I do like deep discounts!

Otherwise I use cash back credit cards anytime I can. I don't have to pay until the next billing cycle and I get 1.5% - 5% cash back, win, win! Normally it adds up to close to $1000 at the end of the year. This year will be more, we had a banner year. Ill let you know just how much when I complete the year end accounting. Not looking forward to that, brings me back to taxes. Again, I don't like to see that many zeros leave my bank accounts.

I issued a return authorization, I don't have to do that very often. The customer ordered Lionel HO track instead of O. An honest mistake, I'll eat the shipping.

All in all yesterday was a good day, thank God.

Today is looking good, I get to take my grandson to school!

I hope Everybody has a great day!

That's all folks 😁

I forgot to mention the Olympics!
I'm enjoying the games, I hope you all are too.
I don't really care who wins. I like watching the best in the world compete. Ok, I'll admit, its a little better when the Americans win. 😉
USA, USA, USA!!! 😁

I'm very disappointed with baseball! Billionaires arguing with millionaires, no sympathy from me.
All I want to see from a new contract is more day games and more baseball on broadcast (free) TV. They never seem to think of the poor kids with no cable. I was a poor kid.
Oh well, maybe I'll use the time I would spend watching baseball with my trains
To be perfectly honest I'd prefer to listen to a ball game on the radio while I play with my trains.

If all goes as planned I'll have more free time. When does all go as planned? Not usually, not from my experience. Like I always say "do your best, let God worry about the rest", what more can you do?

As it is my hobby consists mostly on this forum. Except for looking at a few emails from saved searches on eBay. Thank God for this forum and eBay. I do get to see train stuff pass through my hands. Not much excitement in buying stuff for resale.

Turns out I did have some things to say. I'm seldom ever at a loss for words.

How am I doing with run on sentences? 😉

God Bless Us Everyone

Good morning all! 19 degrees here in SE Illinois on the way to mostly sunny and 51. Definitely going to be a lunch at the park today when my meal break time comes. Gotta work 3 days and then get a 3 day weekend which was not originally scheduled but got changed yesterday for some reason. Not going to complain about this schedule change for sure. Glad I'll be off Sunday now for the Daytona 500. Sorry I haven't been around much lately. Lots of various things going on and just plain staying busy. Hope you all have a great day!

Morning all,

42° and red flag warnings up, going for a high near 70°, About the same for tomorrow and then rain turning to snow Wednesday night into Thursday We're in the area expecting 3"-6"+ of snow then back into the upper 40's on Friday and temps in the 60's on Monday.

What a day Monday was...They are reorganizing the operations department (IT and Facilities Maintenance). The IT department is staying with city administration and Facilities is moving to be under public works. The kid who wasn't qualified for the IT job 4 months ago now has his IT job as we're having 2 IT techs instead of an operations assistant. Great, just what I needed. I was hoping he was on his way out the door, but I guess he didn't get the job working (that's the keyword there) for one of the aircraft companies. He's typical of many of that generation, who like money and the idea of a job, but what do you mean I have to actually work. I keep telling myself 6 more years...6 more years. ;)

Thanks for all the belated birthday wishes. The day ended ok.

Called the bank yesterday to find out where my 1099 was for my checking account. Lady said I didn't earn enough interest, so I was finally able to get the taxes filed yesterday. Good thing about not having a ton of expenses and a cheap house, Tax time is easy. I only wish I had filed 2 weeks ago when I had them otherwise completed. Refund going on the principal of the house loan. Nice to see the amount owed dropping. Wife asked me how many more years on the truck. I told her first payment was due in March of last year and I've made almost a years worth (actually 13) payments. I have a 1/2 payment taken out every 2 weeks, and I dropped the $3500 I got from the sale of the old truck on the loan for the new. I suspect I actually have about 3.5 years remaining. I could pay it off today, but I like having emergency funds in the bank for the first time in our lives.

Off on Thursday and Friday and Monday is a holiday, so a 5 day weekend.

Willie: Good looking grandson!!!

Afternoon All,

Started out doing my laundry then got busy in the train room. The parking lot lights are in and working. After that I placed the build on the layout and hooked up the lighting (I'll take a photo of them once it darkens) and started building the train side platform. The "concrete" footers are drying overnight. I should be able to finish it tomorrow. As a plus I found 2 REA freight cars that I forgot I had :).

This morning I ordered 19 diecast cars for $202 (came out of train fund). This includes shipping.

Thank you for all the likes yesterday for my photos,

Ken D&J- Nice job on the track work.

Lee- Nice job on the KW build.

Alan- What a mess.

Dave- That is a nice rural scene. Did you use real dirt?

Steve- Hope your wife and dog feel better soon. Interesting fact about Greyhounds.

Willie- He's a cutie. Great haul.

I hope everyone has a good night.
Thanks Curt. Your layout and buildings are looking great

Great photos!

"A Bridge too Far", one of my many favorite movies!
Yep, love it too, these were originally intended as tractor units for large artillery, but never really used in that roll, as the focus moved on to missiles and rockets. Straight 8 motor, top speed around 35mph, 5 speed crash gearbox, wind on handbrake, no powered steering, turning circle bigger than a Boeing 747, bitch to drive, used to teach class 2 licence on these.
