One last question on this tax stuff. In NY we pay over $8,000 in school, town and county tax. My wife's friend who lives in Boynton Beach FL a very clean well keep area with a golf course pays $250.00 a year. Willie with his 15 acres pays $1,000. We have 1 acre and like I said, pay $8,000.00. How does that work? Someone explains that to me. Then we'll move on to another subject. If you venture into New York City your chances of not making it out alive are good. That's why I'm paying the $8,000.00 the great security we have in the state?
George
We pay no state income tax either.

Hello tax experts of businesses they don’t own. Modelers with too many unbuilt kits and folks like me who create run on sentences But owned a business. I am sure a few of the nuns that taught me are rolling in their graves over that.

Let me say, Terry and I have always paid our staff well. If we had raised or doubled their wages, IT WOULD have affected the bottom line. We have stable staff now, as part timers earning $17.00 to start. Plus, many earn tips from folks who rent the stable box. Why, because people won’t work for less in these jobs. They may love horses but they still want to be paid.

In the Property Management company all staff earned profit sharing, until Covid hit when profits disappeared. 31 years and other then the 1st year with no staff and the last 2 during Covid with lots of staff were our only unprofitable years. The PM staff started at a minimum of $26000 depending on the job if full time, with healthcare and 21 days off called PTO, not vacation but personal time off. That included the landscaping and custodial staff. Most of our managers were getting 6 figure salaries which included housing as they had to live in the complex they managed. Unlike our former President (I voted for him once) who hid that perk from the government tax collectors so there was unreported income. By law if living expenses are given they must be declared. Documents show his companies did not include that perk in tax reporting. That’s wrong. When we sold the PM company each of 21 managers got a bonus, 3 got a 6 figure bonus. Every staffer if they worked for us over 40 days got a bonus and none were less then $5000.

Ask Terry (bnsf971)what his former employer gave him when they sold out. He has been very out front with the crap he has taken by the new ownership group.

There are lots of employers like my wife Terry and I were. You just don’t hear about them or work for one. We shared the good times, why because we saw how hard our parents worked to earn little. Maybe that is part of the wages issues. Owners who really don’t have a clue how hard it is to live on the wages they pay out. My brother lost sight of livable wages and how we grew up and has no remorse about it. He may not be a 1% but he’s damn close. But, he did help his employees. He paid for countless funerals and time off for catastrophic medical events including paying off medical bills. His company was commission based. The more you made for the company the more you made. But, not everyone can work like that

The American way, if you don’t like your wages move on. If enough move on, wages for the replacement will go up. That’s business.

I got home from the hospital a day early yesterday when they asked at 3pm if I felt good enough to go home. They took the vitals and a few hours later I was home and not overnighting in a hospital bed. It’s much nicer here. The throat is tender not sore but I am very happy it’s done. The last minute call on Saturday to move it after being cancelled in January because of Covid, rescheduled to May to Monday is a relief. Tylenol and warm diet Dr Pepper with a lemon will help all day.

Relaxation is the key word for my day and after writing all that above, I need more then a Pepper

g stripped for painting, hopefully today

Good morning all.

Got some roadbed glued down yesterday. I have another evening meeting today, but Wednesday thru Sunday, I hope to make some big progress and maybe even finish the outer loop of the layout!! That will be fun.

I also need to program and setup my PSX-AR auto-reverser. The reverse loop is several weeks away from installation, I fear, but I want to get the electrics ready and I plan to install the AR next to the PSX-1 circuit breaker beneath the layout. I have seen some cool vids of hinged boards for mounting PCBs. Has anybody here done that? Seems a nice way to mount the PCBs, which should not need much intervention after the initial setup. But good ol' Murph being what he is . . . the ability to fold them down for work seems nicer than having to unbolt/unscrew them each time. And it just seems cool!

Cheerio all! Steve J

PS: has anybody been watching "Blandings" ? A Britcom that to me and my honey is just hilarious! Troy - certainly there is fodder there for your field of writing!

James my friend wants to buy one but says something about the guy's not taking orders until the present orders are filled. Is that true?
George
Yes, He has 200 plus orders to fill. He does all of his own work in his basement. He is trying very hard to meat customer demands. The problem is some people lack patience etc. He is just a one shop man. People needs to understand all the work that goes into this for his business. He posts his progress all the time and shows his step by step assembly line it's incredible how he does it. I think once he is caught up with his current orders he will start taking orders again. I think he does a block 100 each time for each type of equipment. The other issue is making the parts and order parts that can be time consuming for him as well. I will tell you though the wait is worth it! Every penny! My order # for this model was #207 and I placed the order on November 28th of 2021. So now I am getting it either today in the mail or tomorrow.

People who are content with their jobs don't complain...nor do they have reason to. Obviously, those who aren't happy do complain.

Moving right along, I'm trying to refurbish a 90s era Walthers Covered Coil car, originally sold as a kit. If this works, it will add some variety to my traffic base. Seems that what ever type of adhesive I used to assemble the kit has failed. This mostly affected the couplers. Now that I located a drill bit and 2-56 tap, I'm on the way to restoring the car. I also replaced the wheel sets and trucks to reflect the prototype.

That's what is apparently causing the wage inflation we hear so much about these days. That's business, and it makes perfect sense.

Apparently that's what is causing delay to fulfilling my order for the new Bowser Alco RS3. When an employer doesn't offer competitive wages, their employees walk and they can't attract replacements. Another dilemma for both business and their clients. Hopefully, it will actually be shipped today, and I might have it by weeks end.
Another new wrinkle, my favorite mail order supplier is now charging sales tax to out of state customers....Combined with shallower distributor discounts, and higher shipping costs, this does make the local hobby supplier more competitive. Could be a good thing, or not.

Somehow, this B&O photo ended up in my Conrail folder. Sunburst GP30s at Harpers Ferry.

I really have my eye on that in MILW livery. But $300! So much else I need first. But will they still be available? <Heavy Sigh> I have one Bowser: DS 4-4-1000 I think it is. Great little runner! I got it DC and put a decoder in it. Love it!!

Yupper I am only here because my parents are here. When they go to the big sky.....I go south to Bama! I love Upstate NY where I am but I do not like the taxes or politics in this state...I figure I have about 16 more years or so lol ugh!

This is a popular talking point but teh growth under the Clinton administration after he raised taxes disproves it handily.

Not really. Long term growth is what comes from tax decreases. Not short term. Presidents get some short term growth or lack of growth from their own immediate policies, but reliablae, non timelimited tax decreases mostly affect long term growth, so the president after you usually benefits more than you do (as president) when you decrease taxes. I read an interesting article long ago about how both Thatcher's tax cuts and Reagans tax cuts really pushed the 90s growth story. It was interesting and enlightening. Unfortunately it was in the day of paper magazines, and not the internet, so I don't have a link.

ETA: Not all tax decreases lead to growth and better economy. Time limited and/or highly restricted/targeted tax decreases may show a small effect in the short term but don't do anything long term. This is because if individuals / businesses cannot trust that the tax decrease will persist and be long term, they will grab whatever immediate savings come out of it but won't use that savings for long term investment because they know it will be going away soon. The tax decreases need to be reliable and trusted to have real effect.

Anyway, I am being quiet now about taxes. Back to model railroads and real life railroads.

Good Morning All. Clear and 36, maybe 70° later on. Other than Saturday, temperatures in the 60's and 70's for the next ten days. And except for Saturday, low temps in the upper 30's and mid 40's as well. However I am not fooling myself into thinking that winter is over yet here, maybe though.
I made it through the marathon of medical tests unscathed yesterday. While medical technicians aren't allowed to tell you much, the one doing the heart sonogram did say that there was no abnormalities.

Sure has been a lively discussion regarding taxes since yesterday. I'll refrain from any more comments unless forced to.

Thanks for all of the likes and comments regarding the action poses on the layout; Steve J, Gary, Patrick, George, James, Smudge, Karl, Chad, Hughie, Mikey, Dave B, Curt, Louis, Rick, IB Ken, Moermusic, Tom.

My visit to the train shed yesterday was brief due to the appointments that I had earlier. Really just the same old stuff, ground cover and figure painting.
Meanwhile a few more action scenes.

Tom O - I missed your early morning post yesterday regarding your surgery. I hope all was successful and your recovery is rapid.
Looks like you answered part of my post.
Patrick -
Between work and reading, it has taken me more that 2 hours to get to this point.
At least you're getting paid to read!;)
Nice train show haul.
James - An excellent model.
Joe - Life here is not all Utopia, I also have to pay for trash pickup and have to maintain my own septic system. Both relatively minor compared to the benefits though.
Hughie - Nice scenes.
Willie - Looks like one of your little people needs "to go" real bad.
I probably shouldn't post what she is really doing!
Steve J - At our church that $100 is always cash and is generally not reported by the donor. When I was younger serving as an altar boy in our Catholic church, the priest always split it with us altar boys and the organist, although it was far less back then.
Moermusic - I never intentionally overpaid taxes to get a big refund. I'd rather not let the government use my money interest-free all year long. I always paid as I went and rarely got over $50 in a refund. That is until last year when some bill that Congress passed that retroactively exempted some income taxes on wife's unemployment that we had already had withheld.
George -

That could get me in trouble with a politically filled answer! One thing that the State of Texas does that solely supports higher education, is to tax all oil as it comes out of the ground, thus spreading one of our taxes over the whole population of the US.

Everybody have a great day. Stay safe.

True - - Even when the funds go through a funeral home, I have never received a 1099. But it's that "Render unto Caesar ..." thing. When the Big Guy speaks, those of us of the cloth at least ought to listen.

Yikes! A lot of political stuff going on this thread, for an outfit that is non political. While I can appreciate comments and efforts. I, myself try to come here, to get away from politics and the divisive rhetoric, no matter how subliminal in nature. Sorry, just dont like it, my parents told me 50 years ago, "you best stay away from politics and religion". If you want to get along at all.
Amen. I feel like I need to call my Accountant thought this was a Train forum? This is why I leave and come back when the Rabble is done like you I come here to escape the political nonsense. Looks like I might be taking a hiatus

I forgot that I heard tanker cars shouldn’t be directly behind the engines, is that correct?
View attachment 140509

Hi George, the tanker car question -

There is always a boxcar behind the locomotives in a string of tankers coming out of Williston (Shale oil). I think it is loaded with something incase of a head on

May be a newer safety measure, not in play on everyones railroad, probably not applying to all tankers either

Good morning all,

Second day back at work and feel "normal" after my Omnicron bout. Turned out not too bad, however my wife got it and her congestion was way worse. However, she flirts with a lot of mucus, much more than me.

Willie - more awesome people pics

Louis - like your new factory sealed train set. That would last about 5 seconds in my world.

One of my favorite scenes from my last layout:
