On a real downer at the moment ...
Just learned that:
Daughter will be hospitalized until the baby is born -- or something worse happens.
Doctors (more than one) are afraid of seizures, kidneys, and a host of other things that could happen
due to her diabetic condition past and present!
Sure didn't need this going on!
Only one person a day can visit her - and once you leave the hospital - you cannot go back that day!
Sherrell - got your daughter added to my prayer list as well!😟

Good evening, y'all. 32° with increasing clouds this evening, snow is anticipated from 0600 to around 1700 tomorrow with 4" to 8" of new snow. 👎
I have a 22" snow blower a Craftsman, that my sun bought on closeout, when he worked for Sears Hardware back around 2003. Due to lack of significant snowfall over the past two years, it has sat in storage in the tool shed. When we had a significant snow storm, earlier in the week, it refused to start. Today, I replaced the spark plug, and it started. However, the blades and drive didn't work. I traced the cables, and found the plastic bracket that held the slack adjusters in place was broken, and the actuating bars weren't pulling the cables far enough to engage the blades or drive.
It's a little late in the game to try and find a replacement this year, (remember Ken's ordeal), so with wire ties and electical tape, I rigged a temporary solution. If it holds, I'm good, if not back to the shovels. Meanwhile, I'm going to look into ordering one for home delivery...

Meanwhile, I'm sympathetic with Phil and Sherrel, as things ain't exactly been too rosy here either.

Karl: Sorry to hear about your foot. Hopefully, the solution will work out. Take care, and be careful. Prayers of course.
Curt: The water hydrant is really nice. Same with the sub station.
Willy, Tom, Tom O and Alan: interesting photo. and projects.
Garry: Have a safe trip and an enjoyable trip.

Sorry, to those I missed acknowledging, I've been pressed for time, and just sort of scanned my way through the last couple of days.

Not much has happened in the train room, this week. My 1986 Atlas-Roco Yellow Box S-2 suddenly won't pull itself, let alone six cars. Probably the axle gears have failed. Not sure if I want to replace the gears or set it aside, considering that I have a surplus of switchers. Since I finished the wiring, I have been working operating scenarios. i really need to work on structures and scenery, but what's the sense of having trains if you can't run them?

Broker wreck in Woodbridge, NJ 2-6-1951.jpg

Today, is the 70th. Anniversary of the wreck of the "Broker", (Jersey City Exchange Place to Bay Head), in Woodbridge, NJ on February 6, 1951. 85 passengers and crew died in the wreck, on a newly opened bypass, to allow construction of the bridge over the then under construction New jersey Turnpike, (near Exit 11). Apparently the engineer of the K4 Powered express, misinterpreted a speed order and entered the 15mph bypass at normal track speed. This occurred on the Perth Amboy and Woodbridge branch which connected the Main Line at Union, with the CNJ Perth Amboy Branch at Wood Tower in Perth Amboy.

Note the location of the MU jumper pot head above the headlight of the 7381, as well as ladder placement, and location of the fire cracker radio antenna on the cab roof.

AHHH -- little rays of sunshine peek from the clouds (if there were any clouds around).

Spousal Unit just received a call that Emperor Newsom will allow US to receive OUR second vaccine shot on Friday +
Her knee surgery is once again on for the 23rd of this month!

JOE -- That's a terrible wreck - happens when people don't take their jobs as serious as they should.
Lots of aviation accidents too from people not paying attention!

That's a nice looking FA Unit - must be right out of the paint shop?
Is it an FA-1 or 2? I don't know how to tell the difference.

Top o' the weekend to ya, Shop Dwellers! It's 35*F and partly cloudy with a 1mph East wind here in the Mid-Atlantic - the proverbial calm-before-the-storm. Supposed to get from 3 to 6 inches of snow starting at 5am according to the dart-throwers at the NWS.

A boatload of thanks! to the following for the "likes" and comments on my Friday post: Joe, Willie, Lee, Guy, Tom-O, Gary, Karl, Garry, Tom-C, Justin, Sherrell, Curt

Gary
- that DRGW boxcar you won in Jerome's contest looks great on your layout!

Joe - best of luck on your snow blower situation, hoping that your Red Green-style fix will hold long enough to clear this storm's snow! I feel your pain the Yellow-Box S-2, I have a Proto2000 SW-7 with a dead motor sitting in pieces in its box, that I need to rebuild...someday...

Lee - one thing I have to say about O scale is, there seems to be [or was?] a great range of vehicles available! I'd love to have a 1:87 scale model of a White COE tractor like the REA[?] rig in your photo, I saw those all over the place during my "formative" years.

* * *
Didn't get much time to do any actual mrr activities (i.e., other than online interactions) today. Had to do my regular Saturday chores and errands, plus the oil change and other maintenance work on the snow blower for the 5-hour run time milestone. Then went with MHO to the Saturday evening Mass since tomorrow's snowstorm would make driving hazardous. Glad today's weather was as mild as it was - it gave me a much-needed time window to get the snow blower ready for tomorrow as well as the rest of the season.

For tomorrow while the outdoors is uninhabitable, I'll airbrush a few "junk" shells in the same color of dark blue as I did my F7 shell. I need to do some experimenting with different weathering/fading mixtures to see which one will give me the optimal results on my F-unit when it becomes ready for that final treatment, and I want the test surfaces to be the same color and texture as the model itself. I'd prefer to be applying the decals, but I want these shells to be painted and cured when the weathering time comes. I can do the decal work while the junk shells are curing.

I am slowly plugging away on loco project, a couple things every day after work. Here is a sneak peek:

Still many steps to go. One nice thing about this model is it is sturdy to handle. I have to be careful in a couple areas, but it is sturdily built so can take handling easily, for my sometime clumsy fingers. This is the Varney Casey Jones model. From around 1955 I believe?

NP #328 eh? Nice. I wish I had seen the real deal when she was still scooting around, but I never knew it existed until a few years ago.

Well fellers it's time to close the books on another day. Didnt get much of anything done on the layout today. Attempted to move the era of my layout to the Chessie System. That lasted about as long as my video last night. For some reason I dont feel Chessie on this layout. Everytime I do it up I just as quickly take it back off. Couldn't tell you why that is. I have en route ugh equipment and motive power to do it. Even the geeps I have in C&O paint would work for an early Chessie layout. Add in a few of my Chessie cars and done. It just doesn't feel right though when I do. It's strange because I would have never thought about modeling anything but Chessie System on my layouts. I could say it's because I have done more research however that doesn't stand either as both work the same. C&O operations match the operations for Chessie in the coalfields. Shoot I like to say the coalfields were the lines that time forgot. It isnt nothing to find blue C&O geeps well into the 70s. Have a pair here and there moving coal or moving light with a Chessie caboose in tow behind them. Which my initial plan was to do an early Chessie era layout. Just everytime I go that way I just dont like it. I dont even think putting my workhorse Chessie painted GP35 on the layout would change my mind. I've been on the fence on an era for this layout. Now however I'm on the C&O side of it. So I guess that's where I'll stay for now. I'd imagine I'll gain a renewed Chessie interest down the road eventually. For the moment though I'm not so sure. At any rate I also can say having C&O only books for reference isnt helping none either. I will say my books it what led me to buy my C&O GP7. Ofcourse later getting my GP9. They are my staple locomotives on the layout at the moment. Everything else is back in their respective boxes. Just refer to my sources here. These are the books I have on hand to guide me in everything. I figure yall can guess which one I refer to the most.

As a member of the C&O Historical Society I get their newsletters ever so often in the mail I have another one around the house somewhere. These too have some good reference material as well. That's all I have for now. I'll catch you guys tomorrow. Hope everyone has a good night.

Good morning y'all. It's dark. It's cold. It's wet. Enough about the weather.

Flo- Coffee and bacon please.

Sherrel- Praying for your daughter and the whole family.

TomO- I had previously posted that it held significance because of a difficult time in my life, but the real meaning goes deeper, much deeper. At the end of 2014 into the beginning of 2015, my wife and I hit a major roadblock to marital bliss and separated. There were a lot of issues that we had pushed into the shadows, hoping they would never see daylight. Then they couldn't be hidden any longer. We separated and she moved back into our first home (we were buying her grandparent's home after they passed and trying to sell ours), and I went to stay with family in Florida. She found new "friends" and got into drugs while I stayed solitary until I found myself in the arms, and bed, of another woman. We were trying to work things out, but our paths were drifting further apart. Then she found out she was pregnant. We had been trying for nearly 10 years to start a family, quite unsuccessfully, which added to the original issues. So we found ourselves at a crossroads. Do we continue down our separate paths, or do we come back together and make things work? The pregnancy was not exactly welcomed at first, because it was clouded by a shadow of doubt. While we were apart, one of the "friends" assaulted her, so there were questions about whose it was. I made the decision that it wasn't important. God had given us a wake up call and a gift. We reconciled, turned our life over to God, and my son is the spitting image of his daddy. We named him after my grandfather, who was very instrumental in me becoming the man I am today. So the town is named in honor of my boy. His name means "God has given it" and he came when we both needed him most. Sorry for the long reply, and I know we're supposed to keep it train related and leave our politics and religion off the forum, but that is the meaning behind Nathan's Crossroads.

Y'all have a blessed day. It's about time to get ready for church.

I may pop back in for lunch, or dinner. Got a busy day today, and hoping to squeeze in some time with the layout this afternoon. Probably won't get much done, but I hope to at least run trains and move some cargo around before I pull all the track to lay the roadbed.

Good Morning all 10 degrees in the Ozark Foothills. Flo. Coffee and a Hot bowel of Oatmeal. Thanks for the complements and likes yesterday everyone.

Ken. Sylvan Models makes a White 3000 like my Revell one go check them out.

Yesterday I sorted out some HO Rolling Stock and Engines. I painted a F unit and a Eastern Caboose for Penn Central hope to get the decals on today. Stay warm and have a safe day

Good morning, y'all 38° and raining...we are under a Winter Storm Warning wit an estimated 3" to 6" of wet snow...however, the current temperature is well above the predicted 33° and it's currently pure rain as opposed to wintry mix...Did the NWS dart throwers miscalculate???

Sherrel: Sorry to hear of your daughter's condition...that's really serious...Prayers, of course. As far as the ALCos, I don't know, my guess is FA1. Not that familiar with the Erie-lackawanna.

Justin: I know the experience first hand...While I was working in Baltimore, back in the 80s I used to watch the competition (B&O) at B&O Bay View and Penn-Mary Yards. Many of the switchers were still painted B&O Blue, rather than Chessie. I got in to post 1964 B&O for a long while, until I refocused on the home road in the 90s. The original C&O colors are more appealing than Chessie's rather bright colors.

Ken: Hope the fix holds up. I also have a BB SW7 and re-motoring kit gathering dust since I don't know when.

Lee: Can't go wrong with PC.

Concerning immunizations...I have just about given up on getting a Covid shot based on the way things are done here in jersey. I plan on avoiding people as much as possible, until they start making the shots available in local pharmacies like the flu shot. Yesterday, I finally got a confirmation from the state, that I'm on the list, and that they will notify me of my appointed time. The same notice gave me a list of places that I could call for an appointment...so what is it? Are they going to notify me or is the onus on me to find a vendor and set myself up????

Meanwhile, as a prerequisite of my wife's taking the high priced RA drug...This month the co-pay should be around $1282...she had to take the Shingrix shingles immunization series (two shot 90 days apart). Well after the first injection, she came down with a mild case of Shingles, now that she's completed the second, she has chicken pox...wtf???? This gets me back to my precovid notion that immunizations should be avoided...

Morning!
It's one of those days where the temperature designations meet. -37°F (-38°C). So I suppose it don't matter what country you are from, the language can be understood when it gets this cold.
A lot of words that are preceded by the word Holy come to mind on these type of days: Holy F, Holy S, and Holy J.
I'm glad I don't have to go outside today. The wife went to her work, so I'm feeling bad for her. If you live in the north, though, the cold is to be expected. May as well stay happy with what it is.

Sherrel - I haven't commented on you're daughters expected forthcoming new life. Congratulations!! Like everyone else here in the shop, I hope it goes well for her, and for you.

Not much going on here in this kind of cold. I've got my choice of either continuing with the layout room reno, or doing some modeling. Either is a project in the warmth of the house.
Thought I might experiment with soldering white metal. I have this grader that I purchased last year, and haven't started yet:
WS Grader 05-15-2020 (1).JPG

WS Grader 05-15-2020 (3).JPG

If I don't get to solder experiments, I might at least clean up the extensive flash and separation lines on the parts. I am curious, though, to know if this white metal is easy to solder. The grader looks like a good place to find that out.

Thank you for the likes on all my past posts here in the shop.
I'm going to have another coffee and do some reading, and then I'll be on my way.

Have a good one!

Good morning from the truly frozen tundra in Wisconsin. My So. Central Wisconsin is at -14 real and -25f degrees wind chill. It was -35 wind chill overnight.

The granddaughter is here and has been a chatterbox since 5:30am. Her brother has a couple of hockey games today and they had to leave early this morning. During the Covid the rinks are limiting attendance to only one or the 2 parents. Today it’s both parents so Harper is with me. She is her brother’s biggest cheerleader but has been unable due to the rules to see him play this season.

Jessie, I am sorry if that brought up old feelings but you Sir are a better person then I could be. Thank you for taking the time to describe the answer to my question.

to all posters, as usual great pictures and some wonderful backstories

Today between the Hawks playing hockey on NBC and that super game later I will be unplugging the 2 house televisions and deleting from my phone and IPadPro any NEWS channels or sites. I am preparing not to listen to any politics, news or Super stories about this silly mass exposure game. Terry will be home Friday and she will then have her TV on with the news on in the background, devouring The View or the one soap she has watched I think forever. I kind of chuckle along with The View but I can’t handle the rest.

During the game, I will be in the trainroom. I either will be working hard on the grain complex or just gazing at a very big diorama or large switching layout. I need to get out! I will try to practice what Snoopy if preaching. Or not.

Morning All! And to think that I complain with mid to high 30's for a low! Speaking of which we are starting off with 41 and heading towards 73 for a high point. It actually topped at 78 here yesterday! Those temperatures you guys are posting are scaring me, however, I do remember them and didn't think too much about it at the time.

LEE - You are encouraging me to return to my roots of model railroading. At my age and With 7 soon to be (hopefully)
8 grandsons - I should just set up an "O" scale layout in the garage and let them all have at it!
I was going to suggest Sylvan to KEN, but you beat me to it!

JESSE -- Here I thought I was the only one with such a story to tell, very interesting how some things turn out in the end.
Thanks for posting that.

A HUGE Thanks to all of you for the encouragement of my latest problem with the daughter. I debated whether or not to even mention it on the form, but just to let you know that my following and posting may slack off for a while. Just will have lots to think about and we will be on the road a lot to the hospital about 50 miles away. This is the youngest of my wife's three daughters and her favorite - the one who is closest - and the one who is always willing to pitch in and help.

Good morning gang!
30 and snowing! Doggos are loving it!
20210207_095423.jpg

A sincere thank you to all who passes along the get well vibes and prayers, they are much appreciated. Amazingly I can walk on it, with very little discomfort. The boot looking apparatus is not the most stylish thing,

Ken, shhhhhhh, we're trying not to be obvious here with MR time!!

Sherril, prayers for the daughter and child.

BBL Gang! Keep them purdy pitchurs comin!!

Good Morning Folks. Partly cloudy and 33° here on the plains of North Central Texas. Still no accurate or consistent weather forecast from the weather geeks at NWS for this area. Five days and five different forecasts. It will be cold, but which days and how cold is anyone's guess, and they seem to be asking anyone!
The plumber came by yesterday morning to repair my broken sewer line. Took him longer than he projected, but not by much. His company is "The Jolly Dream Team". It's a husband and wife team, and their last name is Jolly. Turns out that he did a lot of work for the new "nutjob" neighbors on the property next door. He admitted that he charged them a higher rate because they came across as being better than others!
jolly.jpg

Yes her hair is multi-colored. Front to back, orange, yellow, blue, green.
Otherwise yesterday was rather uninteresting

How about a big ol' stack of blueberry pancakes this morning Flo. Double order of bacon and lots of OJ and maple syrup.

Thanks to all who liked or commented (or both) regarding yesterday's archive pictures; Lee, Justin, Garry, Tom O, Gary, Guy, Tom, Curt, Sherrel, Chad, Karl,, Joe, James.

Another frustrating day with the crossing signals in the train shed yesterday. To recap, they are working flawlessly when any and all trains are traveling southbound. Northbound is a different story. They are working erratically. I am sure that it has something to do with the sensitivity of the photocells, but which one of the two, and do I make it more sensitive or less sensitive? This is going to take some time. Some covered hoppers do not get recognized and other identical ones do. I have verified centering of the cell and something is working, sometimes! I am just going to have to take some time to figure this one out.
Back to the archives for a photo or two. Here is a laser cut wood kit of a country store called Schmeggies, from JL Innovative.

Sherrel - High hopes and many prayers for your daughter and soon to be grandson. Tough situation overall.
Gary - Boxcar looks right at home on the layout.
Tom O - Nice job on the completed grain bin. The lattice work looks to be a real PIA.
Curt - I am not sure what is causing the crossing signal to work erratically, yet.
Guy - Those look like really intensive but fun kits to assemble. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Greg -
Willie: In your posted photo, did the couple's action on the porch lead to the church steps???
Interesting question, but no. The actions are going on simultaneously. The girl's parents are at the wedding!
Joe - Hope that the snowblower repairs hold up.

Everyone have a great day. I'm already behind for the day and it will get worse. Stay safe and may the best team win. I will not be watching.
