Good evening. After Ebay lit a fire under the non-responsive seller, he did send a single message apologizing, and telling me the item was sold two weeks ago. He's now trying to work out how to refund my purchase, because he's in a catch-22 with them. He has until the 23rd to figure it out.

Some stuff happened at work today. Most of us were extremely short in our paychecks, with no explanation forthcoming from the powers-that-be.
A salesperson that got an $80 paycheck clocked out for lunch, and applied at a competitor. By the time they returned to work, she was called into the office and summarily fired for applying for another job. I won't get into whether I think that action was particularly legal, and I definitely won't name the company I work for, in case they find this place. And of course 8 days before Christmas is a great time to get fired, any prospective employer will wonder how bad you F'ed up for that to happen.

@NorthBrit safe journeys!
Willie, glad you're improving.
Hit 58 today and overcast/drizzling all day, but it was warm enough to run the Kia through the carwash and it looks much better. Still getting over the last vestiges of whatever virus I picked up last week. LadyC is still pretty sick, but got three series of medication today. Gonna pick up my g'nephew Lucas tomorrow and run him to the thrift store, as he is growing like a weed! Crud the boy is 13 and has grown 7" and 30+ pounds since April! Gonna get him some pants that we know he's gonna outgrow and a couple pairs he can grow into. Hopefully tomorrow I can make myself put a little Christmas train together for decoration.
Merry Christmas to you all.

Plumber came and went from 6:00-8 :00. Replaced the inlet pipe, but water heater still doesn't work. He's not familiar with the electrics in a tankless water heater, but will return tomorrow afternoon to do the labor. I know what's wrong and I know how to replace the heating element, but wielding that big wrench is just not in the cards yet. I have 2 brand new heating elements as I keep spares. Although Amazon has been known to deliver them in less than 18 hours.

Why haven't you filed a claim with the DOL? The DOL will start a full audit if someone or a "class" has documented everything. They owe you the pay and they will accrue interest on top. Retaliation is illegal unless you let them get away with it.

If you do listen to it, please leave a like (and subscribe).
I've listened to them all, I like this one best, but they all have been good. I was surprised I hadn't already clicked subscribe.
the anti-AI brigade that combs Youtube and other platforms to downvote AI stuff without even listening to it.
I think some people enjoy being against something, anything! Like those who always find something to complain about. "Mikey hates everything"
support efforts to make sure AI companies compensate the artists they train their models on
It’s important to ensure artists aren’t being taken advantage of, and it’s completely fair to oppose and speak out against that.

I would like to make a request, how about a Christmas song! I can always use another version of Silent Night. Just don't f' it up like many do! 🤪

LadyC is still pretty sick, but got three series of medication today.
I hope she feels better.

He bested me! I grew 6" one summer. How tall is he? I was already 6'1 (6th grade) when I grew 6 more inches.

God Bless whoever is feeding that boy and you for buying him some cloths.

Check his shoes. I was wearing size 9 shoes. After the 6" summer my mom bought me new size 13 shoes for school. My toes never did straighten back out.
Hopefully tomorrow I can make myself put a little Christmas train together for decoration.
I wish you well and I would enjoy seeing it if you can post a photo or two.

If Florida is like Maryland a "work at will" state, no explanation is needed to terminate someone.

Although Amazon has been known to deliver them in less than 18 hours.
And probably a lot cheaper. I buy all my appliance parts and GM auto parts from Amazon. They can be crazy cheap!

I recently bought a new GM alternator for my Equinox from Amazon $237.78 more than 50% off list price! No cheap Chinese knock off, it came in the sealed original GM box with the part number label complete with the hologram, or whatever they call it.

I haven't been so lucky with fast delivery of some appliance parts, but the prices are worth the wait.

Good morning! It's Thursday, 43°F and mostly cloudy. Have a good day!;)

Exactly.
And they found out about it when the place she applied to called to verify employment.
And since everybody is on 90 day probation, there is no reason needed to fire her, and none was officially given.
Wow, I guess no do not contact block on the application or it wasn't brought up. I had an applicant tell me do not contact as I would always ask. He worked for a family business and they would probably downsize him if they knew he was trying to leave.

Good morning all!

A very foggy Northern Illinois morning. The radar is not showing any precipitation, but there is some drizzle. Currently 41F and
that will be about our high for today. strong winds will start dropping the temps later this afternoon.

Usual stuff around the house today. I might go get a haircut today or tomorrow depending on the weather.

Daughter starts Christmas break today. The high school don't start break till Monday, but because she got all As and one B she is
exempt from exams.

Have a safe day everyone!

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those past their growth spurts...

It's Troy again...

Good luck to those with issues, health issues, or water heater problems.

Terry: Keep your head down for the next few months.

Chad's post on the AI Music he's producing is a good segway into the AI topic.

A fellow author and advertising guru has a private facebook group where we can hangout and soak in her marketing wisdom. She's also created an AI report where we can submit our manuscripts, and her AI marketing whiz bot will tear it apart, analyze it, and spit out a report that is marketing gold. (I still have to do something with the ones I paid for).

Well, yesterday, she decided to open a topic on the group for discussion by we indie authors: Are we using AI in our businesses? How so? Where do we see AI and the author biz going in the near future.

I'm not gung-ho on AI, but I use it. I used to fall for the anti-AI hype. But realism set in. Genie and Bottle metaphors abound.

But there is a VERY VOCAL minority - from the data in various non-scientific surveys about Indie Authors, less than 5% of such are opposed to all AI in their businesses. But, man! are they ever LOUD about it.

1. It's THEFT! - Well, not really in most cases. Courts are deciding that as long as the bots are not retaining the data used to train there isn't an issue of using material from the web to train. Even if the training materials came from pirate sites (all of my books are on pirate sites - and it's whack-a-mole to get them down, so I don't bother) it's not illegal to use them to train. The crime was stealing them in the first place.

2. Water & Electric usage - it's the usual crowd you'd expect complaining about that. And there are some good arguments in this for regulation. Data Centers don't employ a lot of people, but do us a lot of resources. But it's on US to get our poly-tick-ians to make those regulations.

To be honest, I was gearing up to do live vendor events. Go to game conventions, pop-cons, comic cons, etc as an author-vendor. Put my paperbacks on the table and try to sell them. But, some of my covers are AI images bashed together. And I don't want to deal with the one or two people who might recognize them as such and throw a huge stink. I want to avoid that conflict.

So I'm just keeping my head down with the author name. I word the words, but use the AI in the lead up and follow up to the writing.

In other news, I'm trying out this set of sleepbuds

Screenshot 2025-12-18 at 7.13.17 AM.png

They bluetooth to my phone, and have a variety of onboard or in-app white noise and tinnitus-type masking sounds.

The "wing" off the bottom of the disk is very soft silicone and designed to brace the earbud into the ear. They do stay in overnight. BUT, like getting use to hearing aids, I need to build up a callous in each ear to not feel them. That might take a week.

The other downside is the volume of the "onboard" masking noises. I can download them to the buds, combining up to three (currently: Ocean waves, train clicky-clacks, and crickets)... BUT the volume drops by half when using them on-board without bluetooth to the phone.

So, I'm having to use the bluetooth to get the volume in the sound I need to mask the tinnitus.

The first night I tried them, I did not realize they were set to stop making noise once it detected I was asleep. I kept waking up and hitting the app on my phone to restart the sound. Last night was better after I set it to stay on all night.

But, the transition from the sleep headband to these caused my tinnitus to spike since I wasn't masking it very well the first night. It'll take about a week to settle down. By then, I should know if I want to keep or return these.

Morning all,

49° and windy this morning, clouds abound. I almost ended up in Oklahoma this morning, I did see a house and an old lady on a bicycle (or was it a witch on a broom) blow across the road this morning. Winds at 40+ mph and gusting to near 55mph. Travel advisories for blowing dust and windspeeds exceeding 70mph have Interstate 70 closed for the first 50 miles on the state's northwest side. Expected here by late morning.

Terry: Sounds like their not a good place to work for. Oldest daughter missed a paycheck when she was in HS, and I immediately called the state. She had her check 2 days later with interest. The franchisee went chapter 7 a month later and shut down 27 burger kings. She was the only one who got her money.

Good morning from a fire at will state. Wisconsin has the no reason given when getting fired and when we terminated staff no matter the reason we were told never give or even hint at a reason. Firing folks was one of the toughest parts of the job I’ve ever had to do, even when it was absolutely deserving.

It’s 39f degrees at 6:00am heading to 45 later at about 11am. 17 is the guess for 10pm and 10 at 6am tomorrow. We will have warmth, rain, ice and snow over the next 24 hours and warmth in the 40’s again Saturday. The Autumn weather yo-yo in Wisconsin continues. Just a few more days to the stability of Winter weather!

Had a good time at yesterday’s work session at the friend’s. 5 of us installed the entire 9’ x 52’ 2nd level of his peninsula. This is his 3 level nolix which basically a helix without the million levels of turns that you lose your train on for 15 minutes

I will spend time at the bench today after maybe 90 minutes there last night. Usually I track my times in the train room but there is no billing for the power plant or paper mill and after tracking the time ( because of habit) on the swing bridge and girder bridges I do not want to know. I did have a guy yesterday talk me into building a power plant facade for him that will wait unit I have the main structures of the paper mill done. I need to compile a parts list for him to start putting together. He maybe surprised at how expensive scratch building can get just in materials. He didn’t want a kit bash.

Today I will paint the vents

and yes the white frame around the vents is completed. The windows above the vents will be cut out. The Sintra skeleton framing I use is already cut. I just have to cut through the sheet metal cladding.

One of the guys I operated with at a OPS session last weekend texted yesterday. He wanted to know if I would kit bash some buildings together. He already sends me diesels to weather and he sells those in his store. He’d like a few medium sized??? buildings. I want to say no but Terry suggested I think about it before outright saying no. That surprised me and Inasked why, she said you are calmer when you spend time building things. We shall see!

The grandson and Crew have issued invites to 2 slot racing events during the 3 buddies and 1 buddette Christmas break. They have a new lunch and treat sponsor. The local Taco Bell has been recently purchased by the owner of the Culver franchises (grandson and g/d are racers) in our region of Wisconsin. He offered again and as a grandparent he will be here to Marshal/Chaperone on both days. The LHS is putting up some gift certificates and his niece will join the races. The LHS owner is also going to be a race Marshal/Chaperone. He also has invited the racers to a clinic for them at the store. How to maintain the slot car and yes I’m going. These kids are impressively organized and led by the Buddette, she is a go getter! They do charge $10 to race but that has basically turned into gift kits for everyone. Also with free lunch and snacks along with a no pay day care service for 11-12 year olds from 10am to 6pm it’s a deal for the racers parents. There have been 3 grandparents besides me at every race so far and a couple single parents have also helped out. They’ve had 30 racers but that was too much. 18 is great and the maximum is now 24 enforced by the daughter who technically is the hostess as it’s in her house. The track is 3 lanes and so far except for a minor glitch one day all has run really well.

Be well

Good Morning All. Partly cloudy and a warmish 58°. Mid-60's again today with a cold front tonight, might get near freezing. But back into the 60's again tomorrow with many days in the 70's coming up. My kind of winter. 78° is the forecast for Christmas Day.

Headed out for the weekly grocery trek today, doubling up since I won't be going next week. Plumber is returning this afternoon to change the heating element in the water heater. I can deal with the cold shower as long as we have running water. The leak yesterday wasn't real bad, but it could have escalated easily. So much for my "day off".

Out in the train shed yesterday, I painted a little more on the figures on the bench. And celebrated day 4 of the "Ten Days of Christmas" with the unveiling of an Athearn RTR boxcar.

This is not a recycled and assembled Blue Box car, but traces it's lineage to the Details West freight car line that Athearn acquired in the early 2000's. Still quite similar to a Blue Box. It's kind of gaudy and will look much better with a shot of Dull Coat and some weathering. I might even experiment with the airbrush or rattle-can of rust since the build date of 3/63 is a good 15 years before my era.

Patrick - I get a lot of use out of my battery powered 6" chainsaw when pruning trees. It sure is easier than hauling the 16" one around.
David (Marlin) - Try to stay dry up there. Did any of the downed trees damage anything on your property? Building kits is my second favorite aspect of this hobby. Running trains, specifically switching, is my favorite.
Louis - Get rested and get back to it!
Tom O - Yep! Terminating people was the hardest part of my job through all of those years. Terminating for cause wasn't nearly as difficult as a lay-off due to business.

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is 82 today, proving that miracles do happen.

Everyone have a great Thursday.

Good morning gang!!

37° and sunny, with a high of 50° predicted, that oughta chase the rest of the snow away! Plus 50° and heavy rain tomorrow should clean all the salt and brine off of the roads.

Day 3 of not taking the Atorvastatin. Oddly enough, my hip , leg, and lower back feel slightly better today. Is it really better, or is it psychosomatic only time will tell. I can only hope!

Wife and son #4 took off for NC to visit the daughter and the G-kids til Sunday. So it's just me and the dogs til then. That means I can eat what I want, sleep when I want, as long as the food dish is full at the appropriate time, then regular potty times and play are allowed. Last night we watched "Robin Hood men in tights" again with the dogs on the couch and the cat on the back of my recliner stretched out with his paws touching the top of my head. Might make it to the basement tonight!
