Good morning, all! It's sunny 65 headed toward 75. Per all the local weather guessers, the upper level winds are carrying the worst of the cold weather east and not dropping very far south. Hence, my favorite little town in the world, Shelburne Falls, was 25 and snowing.
The tree is up and decorated, outdoor lights were applied yesterday, and gift shopping is just about complete sans a couple of gift cards.

Beer - I don't drink beer very often. I get kidded because a 12 pack lasts me about 3 years. When I do drink a beer it's Shiners Bock, brewed in Shiner, TX.

CD/DVD - I'm not that picky about sound. As long as there's no static and rumbling, I'm good. I seldom listen to singing, mostly instrumental, so as long as it's clear sounding I like it. I go with mid priced equipment as cheap doesn't seem to last and expensive is, well, expensive.

Trains - Mostly just running, rail fanning. I have a new structure in mind, but I'm waiting till after Christmas before purchasing.

STAY SAFE
LATER

Believe it or not, beer has a shelf life.
It most certainly does!

Beer generally stays fresh for 6–12 months if stored properly, though flavor begins to decline after a few months. It rarely becomes unsafe to drink, but it can taste stale, flat, or “skunky” once past its prime.

Typical shelf life

Unopened, pasteurized beer
(most mass-market lagers): Room temperature: ~6–9 months. Refrigerated: up to 1 year. Pasteurized beer rarely becomes unsafe to drink, but it can taste stale, flat, or “skunky” once past its prime.

Unopened, unpasteurized or craft beer (like many IPAs, stouts, sours): Best consumed within 2–3 months for peak flavor. Some strong styles (imperial stouts, Belgian ales) can age well for years. I can't tell you more because I don't drink this stuff!

Factors that affect shelf life:

Storage temperature:
Cold storage slows flavor breakdown.
Light exposure: UV light causes “skunking”, especially in clear or green bottles.
Packaging: Cans protect better than bottles because they block light completely. Dark glass bottles are better than clear

Beer type:

Light lagers & IPAs:
Lose freshness fastest.
Dark, high-alcohol beers: Can develop complex flavors over time, like wine.

Signs beer has gone "bad" (undrinkable due to taste)

Flat or no carbonation.
Off aromas (wet cardboard or skunky smell).
Dull or sour taste not intended by the style.
Cloudiness or sediment (if not typical for the beer).

An interesting fact: India pale ale (IPA) - IPA beers originated in the United Kingdom and were brewed for export to India. They had a higher hop content to act as a natural preservative, keeping it from spoiling during the long journey.
I wouldn't drink anything older than about six months.
A good rule of thumb from a man who knows beer!

Good afternoon from an ice over So. Central Wisconsin. Maybe overnight we received an ice glaze covered by 1/2” of snow covered by another glazing rain. If a Wisconsinite couldn’t handle driving this morning they should turn in the drivers license. The 3-5” of snow never happened

I had a 8am dental cleaning! Hygienist said buy a new water pic and change the brushes on the electric tooth brush bi-monthly. I knew the water pic was dying as the pressure was much less, she could tell!

The Swing bridge and others have been delivered. It’s up to John to install. I posted pictures in my thread, let’s build a swing bridge

Next up is to cover a concrete pillar that is 9.5” wide x 19” deep x 16” high, 3 sided. It’s is shown on the right of the pillar. No plans to do a thread on that. It will be a power plant. 34” to the right of the pillar the paper mill begins

When the bridge scene is complete I will post pictures probably around Christmas

A fund raiser dinner tonight that I got roped into as the daughter’s hubby is at a grape producers convention in San Francisco. He has 3 renewals for 5 years and 1 new client so far this week

Be well

Welp howdy there internet peeps and those with toothbrushes

It's Troy again.

Decided this morning that I was finally going to post pics and try to sell off one of my armies from the "old game". Don't worry, I still have the undead Byzantine Romans and all of their creepy cousins. I can still play that game.

Here's what I posted:

And here are the boxes I packed all that in:

No, I'm not sending them a Bambu AMS... that was the sturdiest box I had around.

Then I realized there was another box I had to put together of all the not assembled bits I had promised. So, it's a total of FOUR boxes.

Total shipping was about $65. After paypal fees and shipping, I netted less than I paid for the stuff. But not by much.

Now I gotta figure out what to purchase in a week once I know the boxes arrived safe at the buyer's place.

It has been a while again since I turned on the desktop. My old inkjet printer died. I hadn't used it in so long that the ink apparently dried up and the jets couldn't be cleaned. I picked up a laser printer as the toner shouldn't dry up and I only need black and white. I was unable to get it to operate so I called my son who happens to be a computer geek and it only took him a few minutes to get it operating.

I need the printer to scan forms for financial assistance from the hospitals in Kalispell and Libby as well as the veteran's administration.

chadbag - I had only been to Benihanas once in the early '70's while I was living in Florida. Ended up winning a chop stick eating contest that I had no idea that was going on. I was given lessons while visiting a friend in Hiroshima while my ship was in Yokosuka. Almost starved to death until I had a couple of lessons. The food was OK and we went there because the couple we were with wanted to try it.

Todd - I have a magnetron magnet hanging on the side of my tool box that I used in Florida to help a friend recover his outboard motor he lost. You could do chin ups if you ran a broomstick between a couple of then on the overhead beams on board ship. If you have Digitrax, you can operate DC locomotives on DCC. Did that a number of times on my model railroad club on Livingston.

Kevin
- The only thing about the Outback Steakhouse is the name. Only ate there twice. The first time was so bad that I wrote a review about the meal. They sent a gift certificate and we tried it again. Same results.

All of the talk about beer is interesting. While in the Navy and traveling to 63 countries I have had more beer brands that I can count
Hard to pick a single favorite, but for me the worst was Peroni made in Italy. External use only, head lice, crabs and such. Haven't had a soda pop in probably 20 years. I like my Snapple.

Willie - That's pretty similar to the way I painted figures that were unpainted. Kept a number of them in a container in the corner of the workbench and whenever I used a different color paint, a few more figures got painter. Sometimes talking with doctors can be a pain, but I will have to thank my doctor as she saw something she didn't like which ended up being lung cancer and withing 2 months the surgery was done. Didn't really care for the chest tube, but I guess it's better than the alternative. I have a phone conference Friday to get set up with a few chemo sessions that I may have to take. Thankfully it is a phone conference as I really don't care for the drive to Kalispell in the winter.

TomO - That's an outstanding job on that bridge. Well done.

Guess I'll dig into the archives and post a few photos before I leave.

Gotta go, LATER

Good afternoon to all late comers...........

I was going to purchase a couple of brass, Cal-Scale headlights from Black Forest Hobbies on E-bay.
The headlights are $4.99 ea and shipping at $5.99. I requested combined shipping on the two.
I received two separate invoices for $10.98 each plus tax. That equates to NO reduction in shipping for two items in one package.
Seller wants $12 shipping for two items that will fit in a padded shipping bag and should ship for around $5. The $5.99 is on the high side but it seems shipping is always on the high side. Total for two headlights, taxes and shipping was going to be around $25. I contacted the seller and cancelled my purchase due to no break on combined shipping. What a rip.

As an edit to the above "rant", I was able to order three headlights from the Black Forest Hobbies website. Shipping, taxes total was $19.01. I'm a lot happier now. 😃😃

Ordered some parts for my Bachmann Spectrum, 2-8-0 project. Oddly, some of the parts I needed did not show up on the 2-8-0 parts list. I thought I was going to have to make something that would work. But, having given this a bit more thought, I was sure some of the other Bachmann locos used a similar construction design. Low and behold the other parts I needed were listed on a couple of other steam locos. Glad I took the time to look in other loco parts list. The parts were at a price point that made them cheaper to buy than my time and efforts to make from scratch. Parts are to arrive by next Monday.

I need to re-letter/renumber some steam locos I have. My first thought was to try and remove the lettering, repaint with gloss black and apply new white lettering over the black painted area.......lots of work. Then I thought I could get some white decal paper, use my word processor software, layout the letters/numbers I need, say in red, then show a black background around the letters. Then go back and change the red letters/numbers to white. This should give me a black background and white letters on decal paper to apply over what is existing on the locos now. Has anyone ever tried this before? Does anyone have any suggestions on doing this? All ideas are appreciated.

Need to get busy now so take care......John

John, some white decal paper will not take inkjet inks, so double check what you have. What you can do is print your decal idea on clear decal paper then use some white paint or a strip of your white decal paper under the other decal.

bottom being about 40Hz, is a sub needed?
The thinking is that even though your main speakers can go that low, not making them have to would clean up the sounds higher up. Low freqs make the cone have to move a lot and slowly, relative to the rest of the frequencies. Your RB-15's are rated to 70hz @ -3db and the 7.5 inch driver is best in the midrange freqs. A sub would help to extend the lower frequencies that this speaker cannot reach. I put my sub into the speaker path to pass only frequencies above 80hz to the fronts and then adjust the volume soft enough not to be impactful. It should not be boomy. Hard to explain.

Good Evening All. It's still clear and 53° outside. While it might drop down to the mid-30's tonight, it's back to upper 60's tomorrow.

The pre-op for tomorrow's surgery went as expected and they confirmed that I need to be at the hospital at 6:30 for the 8:00 surgery, so I won't be seeing any of you early tomorrow. While I never like encounters with hospital people or hospitals themselves, I am praying for positive results. They'll be shaving my privates and I don't know whether I should ask for heart-shaped or butterfly? Supposed to be released in the late afternoon depending on the doctor's skill and success. My cardiologist recommended him.

Heard some noises a couple of hours ago out by my tornado-demolished barn, just after the sun set but before it got too dark. So I went out there to investigate and found 2 fully grown bobcats, each with a large tasty field rat hanging from their jaws. I suspect that there were some young ones nearby. They did run into the high grass of my hayfield when they saw me. I retreated even though I knew that they wouldn't be aggressive towards me unless I threatened them or their young ones. Good to see them doing their job out there.

So long for now, I'll check in when I get home.

Best of luck tomorrow. It ain't the surgery that messes you up. It's the anesthetic.

I ordered some Preiser figures from them over a year ago. They didn't combine shipping for me either, and the wait was longer than indicated. I wasn't too impressed with them and have not ordered from them since.
