BLIMEY! None of that "white" stuff here - TomO! At the moment it is WOXOF here, but looking for 70f degrees with partly sunny.

( for the uninformed - WOXOF means ceiling indefinite, vertical visibility zero, sky obscured, horizontal visibility zero, fog. In other words, I'm not flying.)
If arriving with these conditions - a holding pattern is in order while dispatch is contacted for an alternate in mind.

TODD - Beautiful pup, so sad to hear that you lost him. Love the large photo!
Glad to see you are well enough to return to the diner.

I think we all get those. I certainly do. Just let it run its course. I find that if I try to force things the work I turn out is crappy anyway. I've also noticed that doing commission work can cause them to be more frequent. As someone once told me years ago, "If you want to mess up a perfectly good hobby, turn it into a business!"
It’s not a business, it’s a keep busy thing! At least that is what I keep telling myself. It does get be too close to being a business though at times…

I definitely in the last 60 days have cut back. I think it’s a combination of moving to all commission work versus buying, weathering and selling it on online plus commissions. Working on the layout from September to Christmas was a scheduled thing for Tuesdays and Thursdays. With the cut back on weathering it should give me more time for the trains. But the uncertainty in December over the “eniment domain” thing dampened everything. Now that we decided not to fight it and accepted it we should be back to normal. I will continue the Tuesday/Thursday layout schedule into February and re-evaluate.

Thanks

Good evening. FWIW, tomorrow, is the last Business Day of 2023.

Currently Cloudy, and 51°, going down to 42 by morning. Yesterday's rainfall totaled 0.31", today's rainfall totaled 1.60". It has been a very wet December here, 9.53" of rain measured at the Rutgers University weather station.

We are planning on keeping our decorations up through the end of the Christmas Season on January 6, (Feast of the Epiphany). That would be following family tradition. We still haven't exchanged gifts, nor opened what my youngest son gave us.

We have no real plans for the balance of the year...maybe a hockey game or a football game, or a movie? We will have to go food shopping as we are low on some staples.

This arrived today:
View attachment 178712This is a GE P-42 model of the ones I ran while with Amtrak from 1998 - 2008. Commemorative 50th Anniversary scheme. for Amtrak's 50th Birthday on May 1, 2021. I ordered the engine in August 2021, and received it today.

View attachment 178713Received this one from Trainworld last week. I have two pre-ordered since 2021, that are still not fulfilled. I do not have a high level of hope that I will ever see them. Sort of another reason why not to pre order. If they do show up. they have different road numbers than my other RDG cabins. (I believe that Rapido shorted the distributor). The details are finer than the others (P2K and Brass), but otherwise, I can live without them.
I like that caboose Boris.

Just found a video on transformers on Railroads. Very interesting how they tie it down.

Funny I have been following ETR since he started with his son. I saw this this morning and posted it on Let's Get loaded thread. Cool!

thx Tom!

Glad to see you are well enough to return to the diner.
Thanks, very much TomO ... I've sorta checked in from time to time, but right now - until I know my pending sentence ahead - it is difficult to even be cheerful about much ... Some days are better than others. Again - Thank You!

ALAN ... Another gem in your stable!
What a beauty! I have a few remaining brass; some of them may ever have a tinge of "pinkish" about them from being in the box too long?
Here is a 'Whaleback' for you!

Good Morning All. It's clear and 30° out there right now, mid-50's later today. That looks like the weather pattern for a while, except Tuesday when they are predicting rain, but with temperatures staying above freezing. At least that's the forecast today.

The weekly grocery trek went OK yesterday, not out of anything in the store except employees. Had to return to the parking lot to retrieve a shopping cart as there were none inside; no stockers, no baggers, but two manned checkout lanes open...no one in either line. Bagged my own since I know how I unload them after getting home. It looks like prices have inched upward a bit in the last month on just about everything except meats. Seafood has gone up though. It looks like gasoline has stabilized at $2.69/gal at most places; that's 40¢/gal higher than a month ago. I did use the last of my $1/gallon discount from my fuel points.

I had a major hassle at Home Depot yesterday. I needed one 2'x2' ceiling tile to replace a damaged one. They only sell cases of ten and there was a sign stating so. But there was already an open case with 2-3 missing, so I got one and tried to check out. No, the cashier couldn't ring it up. She called over two other individuals who both scratched their heads. Finally a manager came over and she was no more helpful. I pointed out that the case was already opened and they couldn't sell it as a case, so I was doing them a favor by purchasing one and at least moving inventory. She insisted that they couldn't ring it up, and that they hadn't sold a single tile in over five years. I pointed out that some had apparently gone out the door since the case was open and missing some tiles. She continued on the line that it couldn't be rung up. I asked if there was any way that they could just ring up a miscellaneous sale, and the answer was still no. So I asked her whether she would just give it to me, or should I just walk out without paying? She did think about it for a few seconds, but the answer was no she couldn't just give it to me she said. I chose not to steal it and walked away.

Today I have to file paperwork online for a RMD from an IRA that my late brother left me. I have hassled with four different persons at the investment firm and I got differing answers from each as to whether I had to do one or not. My interpretation of the IRS rules is that I have to take one. Two of the four advisors agree but each with differing reasons?!?! My goal is to not have to pay income taxes on the distribution, and not put me in a taxable bracket for income taxes. I did not pay any income tax in the last two years because my earned income has been low enough to put me in the 0% bracket. I've been using money market funds to fill in the gaps from Social Security and that cash is not taxable. I can do this for another year before a major RMD is mandated in 2025; unless the rules change again. Things will be different then, as the total of Social Security, small pension, interest from money market and savings and all of my combined RMD's will amount to more than my highest yearly salary during my working years! :)

I have now gotten three text messages from Joe Biden this week, as well as one from Hillary Clinton, all asking for money! They are all personalized to Tina, the former owner of my cell phone number...it's been over 10 years according to ATT! I text STOP to all of them, but they must have more than one number. I even texted Joe telling him that due to Bidenonomics, I can't afford to donate but that didn't do any good either.

i was out in the train shed for a little while yesterday, but only did some painting on the mobile home. It wasn't enough to warrant a picture yet but I am making progress. Today I plan to run trains as I haven't done any of that in a while due to all of the holiday traveling.
Here are a few more shots of endless rail from the archives.

Gary - Yes, that old-fashioned phone even works during power blackouts.
David - Unfortunately I have an unpopular neighbor that everybody wishes would leave. We did have a peaceful 7 years when he was locked up in the penitentiary for shooting up another neighbor's RV, but he's been released. The Sheriff's Department has been out twice in the last 3 months to warn him about violating the restraining order that another neighbor has on him. He has 24 hour surveillance cameras trained on that neighbors yard, as well as some of the rest of the neighborhood. I'm too far from him and I have a good covering of trees that obscure his view. The last time the deputies were out about 3 weeks ago, asking me if I was also having trouble with him, they asked me if he ever had visitors. I commented that the only visitors that he ever got had "Sheriff" written on their vehicle doors.
Tom O - I do agree with your son about Texas drivers in general, but the holidays bring out the poor ones.
Grizzy - I can't answer about the paint, I am still looking for a paint brand as good and as versatile as Polly Scale.
Chris - That was indeed a horrible day. Good luck today. I agree with Tom that it is probably the full moon.
Joe - Yup! Christmas decorations are up until January 6 here as well. Not just Epiphany, but the twelfth day of Christmas.
Todd - My condolences on your loss of Nina.

Everyone have a fabulous Friday

OH, What the Heck! I can afford one more?

Ah! one of the three foot gauge locos from the Keeler branch. Those are available in brass, but since I'm a standard gauge guy I've always passed on them when they come up for sale. Yes, that pink stain is dye bleeding from red foam. I'm guessing Sunset Models? It'll come off, possibly with a lacquer thinner bath, but definitely in the blasting booth!

Willie. Fortunately our troublesome neighbour is not as bad as yours. It is annoying how people come into the village. They do not like this, that and the other. Why come here in the first place without checking the area? We are surrounded on two sides by a huge man-made forest that has timber wagons travelling the roads. They have been up and down the roads since 1960s. He comes along and complains to the Council. He got nowhere with his complaint.

Then he started to complain about the trees in the village. He really alienated himself in wanting the tree on the village green cut down?

Now his house is for sale. Buyer needed urgently, I say.

David I guess I'm lucking I have 3 good neighbors. One of them brought me over a complete Christmas dinner and has done many other things for us. Another set up my wife's retirement stock folio.

I've lived in "assigned" housing before, where I was given a choice, sight-unseen about which location I wanted. And I always seemed to make the wrong choice.
As far as making yourself miserable in a hobby by getting a job doing it, I've also managed that a few times. My current hobby is computers, programming, repairing, and upgrading. I helped a couple of friends at their stores in exchange for parts and supplies, but managed to avoid getting paid. I'm currently fixing RVs, which was a hobby before it became a career, and now I feel the same about this industry as I do about the other places.
Losing a pet is never easy, and it can feel like losing a family member.

Morning

Nina passed last night bout 1930 with our hands on her.

We got her 5/2005 at 8 or 10 weeks old.

She probably has 150K miles in a truck.

She started going downhill when we were in Texas couple of years ago - some sort of mini stroke where she fell out of the car as back end was not working. Thought we were loosing her then. Called dispatch wanting to take her home as somewhere in the Country was not the place we wanted to leave her. Once home, life was slower for her and she did good up to a week ago. Nother mini stroke we think and she lost smell and brightness in her eyes. She did not appear to be in pain, so we left her to her devices and in our house comfortable. Day after Christmas, nother mini stroke, then there was nobody home. She would walk around the house aimlessly sticking her head in the strangest places and just stand there. Guessed that she could not back up so we would walk around looking for her and get her going again. Called the Vet, Tuesday and he suggested giving it another day or so. They have the whole week off so taking her in for 'the' shot was out of the question.

We are sad/glad it is over for her. What a wonderful dog!

Tod & Maria
A beautiful dog, so sorry for your loss.

Neighbors! No neighbors in 3 directions for over a mile. The 4th direction is west and that neighborhood was an original piece of the property Terry purchased in 2015 while I was in rehab from my stroke. The daughter lives there and 5 very
friendly neighbors and close friends of here and her hubby.

I went to the office as the SIL hurt his back yesterday so I went to see if the sidewalks and drive needed cleaning and they did. Got the ATV with plow and salter out and 20 minutes later I was cleaning off the machine. Before I could leave one of the neighbors about 5 houses up the road asked when I was going to do the neighborhood sidewalks. I did them last winter as Terry and I lived in the office while the current place was being built. I told the guy, in his 40’s. Said while I still own this place we not longer live here. Told him I plowed the neighborhood side walks of maybe 25 people last Winter and got 3 thank yous. I am not doing anymore then my property or the 3 who always thanked me. He huffed away. If he was nicer in the conversation I probably would have done his for him, but he seemed to think he was entitled to me plowing.

I’m perfectly happy without anybody living close to the house.

Willie. We also have a great bunch of neighbours, but there is always one. :) Until he arrived the entire area grew up together. Children played together. We look after each other. Now people have died and a younger generation are moving in. Fortunately they are a good crowd.

Ploughing.
F.i.L company was way out in the country and at wintertime they would plough the local roads keeping them open. Hexham Council loved it. It saved Council money and all that. When Morpeth Council took control they blamed FiL Company for damage to pavements (which they did not do) and sent a bill for damages. From then on the roads had to be cleared by Morpeth Council (and still have to). To save a few hundred pounds now costs thousands.

I see your officials are as hard at work making things better as ours are! 🤣
