The boulevardier cocktail. And a major award.

Morning all,

Well, can't sleep any longer so it's time to get up.

Currently 27° and clear going for a high of 48° later. I did get the bedroom done and at least enough stuff cleaned up that we could sleep in it last night.

Grace Hopper was one of the pioneers of computer science. Took 2 semesters of COBOL ( COmmon Business Oriented Language) Created in 1959 and as was stated, still in use. Although I found other languages easier to use. My first programming job offer after college was less than what I was making repairing computers, so my COBOL skills have never been used outside the classroom. I was one of those guys who got serious about school after I was married and had kids. So money was one of the reasons I didn't take the job.

Got a load of laundry to do and grocery shopping later.

Good Morning All!

31F @ 88% and white is coming down again.

Our major storm I told you about a couple of days ago was a Pffft. Got about 6" of the stuff and it warmed to more than 36F. Been kinda nice for the last few days ... that is if you think anything over 32F is nice. Today we have new white at about 3" which started sometime after I went to bed. We did finally get all of the outside stuff done; tractor/rider mower/mower/pressure washer and chain saws are now under a roof, battery out of the rider sitting in the laundry room on a piece of wood. We pulled fence posts this summer and stacked them to deal with later. Welp, only have a few piles left to to slice up for cook stove wood. Got enough for this winter so that is that.

COBOL - boy this brings back memories. Never went to school for it, got my feet wet many moons ago on IBM 360 Mainframe with it although at that time it was COBOL D. Also around that time I started down the path of ASM. Still doing ASM to this day. Boy how stuff has changed. Can you imagine card punch nowdays? Never got the feel for RPG though and I hate C/C+/C++, reminds me to much of Perl. Perl used to be pretty easy to deal with but it got really conglomerated and is pretty much like C. Nope.

This forum is the 1st thing I do in the morning ( well, body functions and coffee are actually first ) and I totally enjoy reading and seeing pix of what y'all are up to. Keep it up as you are keeping an old guy interested!

Later

Been sitting here for over two hours. Watched over 6 hours of LaCrosse games with the Newport Gson's and was so sleeply that I crawled in bed at 6:38 PM - and of course, I woke a t 12:30 AM.
Sat here and watched a Jesse Stone movie and decided that I would beat everyone to the posting this morning -- wrong I see!
Have generated myself a whopper of a headache - going back to bed - NOW!

Here's one for you! Antonito, CO 1963 I believe?

Good morning from Wisconsin where it is 30f degrees but feels like 20. Sunrise is at 7:18am or about 40 minutes from when I started to type this. It’s very dark out there! High today is 34f/1.1c.

A few things on the bench to finish today as I get ready for a few days of golf out on the West coast. For those golfers out there, Pebble Beach (my 3rd time) and Spyglass (2nd time) are the courses. I’m very excited

Badger Volleyball won yesterday and play Thursday in Tampa, Fl. against the son’s University of Texas in the Final 4. He will join his mom on Thursday in Tampa as the 2 teams battle it out to move onto the Championship on Sunday. I cannot make it to Thursday‘s VB games so will head to Vegas and stay at my brother’s new house!

The grandson his mom says couldn’t buy a goal in either of yesterday’s ice hockey tournament games. We watched the 1st game streaming on the IPadpro, he hit 3 posts in game 1. 2 more per his mom in game 2. Both were loses!

We needed someone to watch the granddaughter for what turned out to be 5 hours yesterday while we were at VB. Daughter says rates are $20 to 30 per hour plus TIP in our area! Maybe I should come out of retirement!

enjoy the day

Just for fun, here's a pic of a computer similar to the one we used in our high school, circa 1977. We fed in elongated punch cards for each student, and it kept track of their grades, and would print out report cards.

And like several others, I've been subjected to COBOL, and prefer other languages....

The plan was a late 40's early 50's logging themed layout situated near here. It would have had an interchange with the NP in Bozeman and with the Milwaukee Road plus the White Sulphur Springs and Yellowstone Park lines in Ringling. The route would have been over Bangtail Divide for some mountainous railroading and a number of logging spurs in that vicinity.

This country:

I absolutely love it out there. If i was doing Northwest modeling, it would be probably Butte area. I could have my Milwaukee electrics, and interchange with some obscure mallets used by both NP and GN.

This afternoon we had the club's Christmas party and family & friends open house. All the eye candy came out and a good time was had by all! I ran the Coast Merchandise. This iteration of the train is heavy with mail for the Christmas rush!

My "eastern railroad eyes" immediately cought that Pennsy E series diesel with simplified paint scheme just before the Penn Central merger. Nice, not many are modeling those👍

Good Morning All. Clear and 31° to start our day. Temperatures will be mixed all week, but nothing below freezing after this morning in the 10 day forecast. NWS is sticking with light showers Friday morning, but temps will be near 60°.

My neighbor Bubba, who has his own small engine repair business, came down yesterday and couldn't get the tiller to start. He'll be back today to pick it up and take it up the hill to his shop. He is perplexed, since it has only 3.5 hours on it since he did the overhaul last spring.

My wife saw me looking at Louis's Christmas tree thread yesterday and twisted my arm to set up our Christmas tree earlier than planned. Usual date is 12/15. So the tree is now up, and lights, ornaments etc, have been taken down from the attic. No easy trick there, as I have to use a ladder to get up there. Let's see, six totes and two boxes. I think that this will be the year that I consolidate what we actually use into 2-3 totes, so the job won't be as arduous in the future. Today I will string the lights. I'll do it while she's watching football and doesn't have time to make too many comments! I am prepared for the annual difference of opinion regarding "Bubble-Lights" which I absolutely hate.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I resumed painting on both the Beverly Hillbillies truck and the stone walls for the cemetery. Here is some progress photos of the truck.

Still need another 2-3 sessions to complete it.
For the stone fence pillars that I was not happy with, I decided to add additional colored rocks instead of 5 shades of gray. The wall on the left is completed and the one on the right is how far I got on it yesterday.
IMG_1075.JPG

There's still six pillar types left to do.
I was also able to assemble, paint and detail the wheelbarrow.

It is not actually a very good representation of a wheelbarrow, but since I plan on using it towards the back of the scene and maybe partially obscured by trees, It will be OK.

Sherrel -
Welp! That's 3 minutes and 50 seconds that I won't get back!
That ought to teach you something about watching some of Louis's videos!;) Know the artist before clicking!
My best wishes for Kate's recovery.
Observation - It seems to be a requirement for starring in a Hallmark Christmas movie, that you must be able to cry on cue!

Everyone have a great day.

I am prepared for the annual difference of opinion regarding "Bubble-Lights" which I absolutely hate.
I used to like them, as something different that my parents had. I never had any of my own, and even more so since I found the liquid in them is extremely poisonous. Supposedly the new ones aren't poison, but I think I'll leave them in the past, where I enjoy remembering them.

Yes, Member John Decker's 1967 Broadway Limited. We have many serious passenger train modelers. Lots of people were taking pics and video. If any turn up on the club's page or internal IO group, I'll post them here for you. It was a very good looking train.
