Good Morning All. Clear and 42° here this morning. It got warmer yesterday than the forecast which was nice, in the low-70's, today just in the low-60's. Still forecasting rain starting Thursday, the NWS has added Christmas Day back into the rainy stretch.

Mother Nature is being good to me this year, the ground surface dried out overnight from Saturday's rain. That means that I can do stuff in the yard and get my Vitamin D dosage naturally. No shortage of projects, it's just which one that I want to do. Gather leaves, cut firewood, mow the back 40, but no tilling the last 1/3 of the garden until Wednesday.

As is usual for Sundays, I didn't get to spend much time out in the train shed yesterday. I did finish painting the tombstones for the cemetery and they and all of the Beverly Hillbillies stuff went to the paint booth for a shot of dull coat to protect the paint. In my experience, that's important for both resin objects and metal castings. No photos yet, as that is a dull (pun intended) process.
The pictures that I did take are destined for my layout update thread, so I will post a few more flat car loads that might inspire someone.

Karl - Best wishes to Sharon regarding the kidney stones. I've had them before but the doctor just told me to use either Advil or Tylenol, whichever my body tolerated better. First episode around 63, and then several times a year until 69 when they mysteriously stopped. I did reluctantly change part of my diet as certain foods can aggravate the issue. I reduced my intake of Spinach, Beets, and nuts; all which I really like, especially peanuts and cashews. Interestingly, I "brown-bagged" peanut butter & jelly sandwiches at least twice a week for over 40 years and never had an issue. The stones only originated on my right side and my doctor thinks that a large one formed and then took 5-6 years to break up, and is now gone. However, nothing ever showed up on the ultrasound.
Curt - Yes I do glue the chain in the stake pockets. I glue one end with CA, and after it drys, I string it through the other side, pull it taut, and glue. A day later I clip off the loose end with my Xuron nippers. On some cars, I have to drill out the pocket; I don't have to on the older Roundhouse ones.
Louis - Surprisingly, even though Dallas lost yesterday, they qualified for the playoffs setting an NFL record for most post-seasons in the playoffs. This will be their 36th season. Not bad for a team that entered the league in 1960. I don't remember who they were tied with at 35 appearances.

Regarding the NFL yesterday, did anyone see the pathetic pictures of the sparse attendance at the Carolina stadium against the Falcons?

Today is the birthday of The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, his 80th. Who ever thought that he would make it this far?

Everybody have a great day.

Greetings and Merry CHristmas to all!

Hi gents, just popping in to let you know a). still alive; b). still meddling in the hobby; c). still quite busy in RL; d). to wish all the very best of Christmas and New Year's greetings.

We got the tree up this past Saturday.

and the battery operated CHristmas Train. I want to tell the kids: "I've provided the Christmas Train - you provide the grandchildren!" But to no avail.

Bad news on the youngest daughter (age 29) front, but with a silver lining: Had her annual eye exam (she has RP - a degenerative retinal disease) and her big-dog-doc is rather concerned. Her deterioration is proceeding at a faster rate than he anticipated. He suspects that she really did win the Mega-Dollars lottery. Not only the rare RP, but the absolute, almost unheard of, RP variant which he referred to as a "Double X." He wants her to have a second round of genetic testing. If this is so, not only does the retina die faster, but will result most likely in a total darkness blindness. As a dad, permit me to vent:

Her little remaining central vision is diminishing and has 'holes.' Her migraines are getting worse. She is now having trouble perceiving colors, and she is having more and more trouble reading her computer screen, even with accommodation software. She continues to work and her staff and superiors love her! They want to see her get her MBA and start moving up the corporate ladder! So far, they seem willing to invest in technology to help her, and do not mind her guide-dog. All in all, not what we wanted to hear.

Silver lining: 1). the older daughter annual eye eval (she has it too) was quite positive. Little degradation noted in the past year. She still has about 40-50 degrees of peripheral vision remaining so is not 'legally blind.' 2). The youngest's new 'young gentleman friend' has said the eye results change nothing and is still discussing long-term with her. Apparently there are still a few gems in the snowflake generation. He is an art-guy who is pursuing his master's in order to teach art in public school. They've been together for about three months now and he is the first guy I have ever seen who my daughter will allow to tease her about her sight! I saw that back in September and thought, this is new and significant!. He and I are not a perfect fit, but I like him and want to encourage him. We will be having lunch together soon. If nothing else, he should be able to be a huge help on scenicking!

Technology: Samsung introduced a new TV mode that is gaining lots of accolades from the Low-vis community, so mom and I ponied up for a new 55" NeoQLED television for her. That set me back a few locomotives!

Well that's me Apologies that I just cannot take the time to stay active in the coffee shop. Merry Christmas and best of blessing to all and your families.

"And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (Luk 2:9-11 ESV)

In my mind a cheese steak is not a cheese steak with any cheese other than good, hi quality American cheese. Who ever heard of provolone on a cheese steak? In Baltimore no less! In Baltimore it's a sub, not a hoagie, hero, grinder or whatever. Philadelphia can learn from Baltimore about cheese steaks. What's up with the cheese sauce Philadelphia? Is that Cheese Whiz and what is a hoagie anyway? The word hoagie takes away my appetite!

OK boys, sandwich lesson time! A cheese steak is a cheese steak, not a sub, a hoagie, or a grinder, or anything else. Those sandwiches are made with cold cuts, typically Capicola, Mortadella, genoa salami, and a few others depending on your taste, lettuce, tomato, onions, and oil. Some heretics like mayo instead of oil.

If you're in PA, it's a Hoagie. Order it using any other term and they'll look at you funny. In New England it's a Grinder. In New York, it's a Hero, and the most common name in most other places is a Sub. All the same sandwich. Any of those without vegetables are called "Zeps"

A cheese steak has four ingredients: The proper roll, steak, onions, and cheese. NO green peppers! (sorry Willie). Three cheeses are the most common. Whiz, American, and Provolone, Provolone being the only "real" cheese in the bunch. Whiz and American are both processed cheese foods. This doesn't stop them from tasting good, but Europeans aren't used to the level of processing and chemical content in our food here in the states, and generally don't like either one. I have found whiz tastes the best, probably because it's the one I had first, with Provolone coming in second. American cheese is pretty tasteless to me (sorry Louis). It's what you put on your kid's grilled cheese sandwiches to get them used to the concept of cheese. 🤣 A couple of important things about a proper cheese steak. The right roll is important. Soft and somewhat absorbent. Meat to cheese to bread ratio is key. The American and the Whiz melt into the meat better than the provolone, and I like the meat and the cheese incorporated into a gooey delicious mess. You should have to waddle away from the table if you've eaten a correctly made cheese steak. Some places in the Philly area will ask you if you want one "wid" or "widout" "Wid" means with marinara sauce. I tried one this way once and didn't care for it. Marinara belongs on pasta or pizza IMNSHO. Note: these are my opinions (at least the ones regarding tastes and what is correct) and are worth every penny you paid for them. Describing the perfect cheese steak or sub/hoagie/grinder/hero is like naming the most beautiful woman in the world. Ask ten guys, you'll get ten answers and lots of arguing! All that being said, my opinions are the correct ones! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

PS: For those going to Springfield to see the Amherst show, there's a great cheesesteak place there called "Antionio's Pizza and Grinders". Their cheesesteaks are awesone, and you can get pizza by the slice. I recommend giving them a try!

I can remember when Captain Harvey's didn't offer provolone cheese.
I don't remember the name, (if it had one), in Canton, a trailer I think. under the Harbor Tunnel overpass, across the street from the old firehouse....which was still an active station at the time...maybe Clinton St? They had a decent cheese steak. This was back in 1973 when I first was assigned to Bayview. The Hump was still active. (Erdman Ave passed underneath. There was a Sambos a block away on Erdman)....Notice how one knows all the all night restaurants when on night work?

There was a Pizza joint in Millersville,PA, adjacent to what was then Millersville State College. To them a cheese steak was chunks or strips of beef, cooked in a barbeque sauce, served over sliced American cheese on a sub roll.

There was a Deli, on Capitol Hill, on Pennsylvania Ave in DC, that offered a hot roast beef sub, that was extremely similar to a cheese steak, except that they used hot sliced roast beef instead of grilling the meat.

Truly, the Cheese Steak is open to regional interpretation.

Good evening all. A warm day. The rain that was forecast has held off.

A friend from Texas is visiting us today. I have left her talking to Dawn - women talk. I keep them supplied with tea and coffee. 🤣
I baked some cinnamon rolls this morning. They went down well.

Younger granddaughter is here after her day at school. I had planned to make her a pasta dish for her dinner. "Can you make me a cottage pie please?" she asks!!!:eek:

A busy evening in the kitchen for me.

You never know. That's why I don't bet on sports. This is why I love sports!
You failed to mention the Fish totally dominating da Jets 30 - 0.....Giants didn't look that good either, embarrassed by the A'ints 24 - 6. Rams beat the Washington Football Team 28-20...Eggles play tonight. Ravens RB Mitchell out for season...(knee). Buffalo's domination of the Cowboys was a real surprise...

Morning folks,

Cloudy earlier but that appears to be burning off. In the day's queue is doing some more rearranging in the "hobby" shop room. I also need to retrieve a couple piles of aspen firewood I cut a couple weeks ago that is still sitting in the woods.

Another that likes dark chocolate. CR had a good review of that topic sometime in the past year with the various levels of cadmium and lead. As with most things, concentrations among different brands varied a lot.

Morning all! Happy Monday (if what day it is matters). I'm close to finishing up the last two diners. I decided to install interiors because, well, as previously stated, self abuse, masochism, etc. 🤷‍♂️

These cars aren't quite as easy as the first heavyweight car, as the construction is different. They have no basic floor with partitions, as the first car did, just the car floor/chassis which screws to a pair of rails soldered to the car sides. This means you have to cut up the interiors into pieces and glue them to the rails and car interior sides, making sure you don't obstruct the screw holes. I wound up with two of these. One will be done in the pre-1946 scheme with "Lines" lettering (late 1930's/early 1940's) because of the windows. You'll note on the green car, they are tall with green transoms. Those transoms were plated over in later years. To accomplish this effect on the yellow car I painted some strip styrene yellow and blocked them along with the lower kitchen windows (per a photo). The transom effect is not exactly how they should look but considering the size, thinness of the brass and sheer number of windows I didn't want to hand cut and fit individual brass or styrene pieces into each transom. It would seem there are limits to my masochism! Using the "three foot rule", it looks good to me! I have to paint the interior pieces, install figures, and get them inside ths cars which I'm sure will be loads of fun! at a quarter per F-Bomb, I may earn enough to buy another hamburger grill car! Note the white styrene view block I added to the kitchen. The yellow car won't get a kitchen because of those partially blocked kitchen windows. You wouldn't be able to see it anyway, so I'll add a view block to the floor of that car so you can't see through the windows on the other side of the car.

Good morning gang!

Made it through the night with the wife, she thinks either she passed it or just repositioned it this morning, we'll see.

50° and cloudy, and getting windier by the hour. It should dry out nicely before the temp drops to freezing tonight.

Cadmium and lead, 2 good reasons to keep the dark chocolate away from developing minds, keep the "good" chocolate for us already developed older minds! 🧓

Gotta go shopping tonight to grab some final goodies for the fat mans arrival.🎅 Plus cat food and some other staples. Hopefully Sharon will feel like tagging along.

One from the vault, I did this one years ago when the "bright future" scheme 1st came out. The cat should have been included.

Karl: Glad Sharon is feeling better. This is not the time of year to be under the weather. Hope the stone(s) passed and she is OK now. I do like the modified C. ;).

Lunchtime at the Jersey Shore...50°, still raining, and getting cooler. (Was 60° at 3:45 this morning). 3.14" of rain since this event began, yesterday afternoon, 2.57" since midnight. Imagine that in snowfall...:rolleyes:. Since the wind blown rain is pounding the house, right now, the rainfall numbers will go higher.

The Dallas Cowboys are the most successful* team since they were founded in 1960.
Two of the Cowboys Playoff appearances came in the 1960s
With Thirty-three playoff appearances since the AFL - NFL merger in 1970 the Cowboys also have the most playoff appearances in what is often called the Modern Era.

The Green Bay Packers also have thirty-five playoff appearances.
Five of the Packers' Playoff appearances were before the Cowboys were founded in 1960.
The Packers are not yet eliminated from this season Playoffs, but their backs are against the wall.

The New York Giants have thirty-three playoff appearances.
Thirteen of the Giants' Playoff appearances were before1960.

The Pittsburgh Steelers also have thirty-three playoff appearances.
Only one of the Steelers Playoff appearances was before 1960. The Steelers second playoff appearance came in 1972.
The Steelers have the second most in the modern Era with thirty-two playoff appearances since 1970.

*That is if you use making the playoffs as the measure for success, as I do. Some would say winning the Super Bowl is a better measure, but I disagree.

The Steelers and the Patriots have each won six Super Bowls. The most Super Bowl victories of any team.
The Cowboys and the 49ers have each won five Super Bowls (I threw that in for you David)

I should note that I may be biased. I don't like the Steelers or the Patriots!

Per my nephrologist at the Mayo Clinic: Eliminate spinach, kale, dark teas, all dark colas (even diet ones), drown yourself daily (drink lots of water). Seems to be working so far, as I haven't had any stones since I had a 6mm job removed from one ureter about five years ago.
