Did the sample go well? They look good!

Lobster chowder? I'm curious to know more. I've never had lobster chowder.

I love clam chowder. We call white clam chowder New England Style. The other is called Manhattan Style. I like both but white clam chowder is my favorite.

Today I will pray for peace. I begin with my own personal peace. Sometimes I let petty things make me angry. I know better, but my emotions can be hard to control.

Life is full of highs and lows. I believe the answer is to bore through the highs and bridge the lows. Out of control emotions only make this harder.

God has blessed me with three wonderful kids. My problem is I tend to expect them to be perfect. I should know better, nobody is perfect, especially me.

I will focus on counting my blessings, not my problems.

The Ravens had a tough day in Cleveland yesterday.

Cleveland 13 - Baltimore 3.

Ravens' fans learned there are no "push overs" in the NFL. You would think they would already know.

The Ravens made mistakes in all three phases of the game. Including the coaching staff!

I remember listening to a Washington Capitals game. One of the broadcasters said, "you can't play like a champion in every game" Sports and life have many things in common.

And, another question for the brain trust...

Finally figured out that one of my reasons for not tackling my RR layout of late has been the redesign of the track plan I need to do.

The benchwork is a folded dogbone in N-scale.

I had a fairly high difference in elevations, which worked when I had another 12 feet of benchwork to gradually bring it down. Now, I'm faced with tearing out the four-inch risers along the back wall and re-painting part of the blue sky backdrop.

OR

Could I have two mainline runs? One elevated, that folds back on itself, and has a 2% grade? If so, do I have the room to get another loop on the lower elevation? (remember, one deck, not two like Willie's double-decker).

Hmmmm... There's a 5" height difference between what I originally laid out for the upper elevation vs the main deck.

Here's the OLD layout:

And here's the new, with the leg on the far right removed.

View attachment 157864

I'd have to do some serious rework here on the "yellow" end where I've already got the track down. Add an outer loop for the elevated line, with a 2% drop and curve it back into the main area. My thought is to use its elevation as scenic dividers (hills) between the lower level's line. Several short tunnels for the lower level.

My initial thought is to have the elevated loop be the through line, with broad curves where I can run a passenger consist. And have the lower elevation with sharper turns for freight lines and some switching.

Anyone got input on lessons learned? What to avoid?
I would go all in welsh coal mine in honour of your book, pls there is great kit about for this was early days in my hobby career and I always planned a new area all this is boxed at present
The welsh valley houses need a slope not on the flat the green area could do that

I have photographs of welsh mining towns in the day as loads of family worked them
my great uncle was known as the Rhonda ram as he put it about a lot he was a short man but looked like Cagney and popular with the ladies how my great aunt never hospitalised him I’ll never know lol
they all need weathering and being suitable sorted in the day we were still flat earth society but after Goathland hills are easy. But a slag heap 2d or 3D would be great, just hope it does not collapse and kill the school kids like it did in real life.

Chag urim sameach!

To all our Jewish friends here in the coffee shop, I wish you a happy Hanukkah season! (Begins tonight, and goes for 8 nights). Please eat an extra jelly donut (forget what they're called) for me. Or an extra latke if they're more your style.

Jaz: Thanks for the pointers on the Welsh coal mine. I was going to do a gravel pit to honor my father-in-law. Need to paint the quarry building orange though. The one where he got his loads of gravel for road construction was orange.

Trying to figure out what to put inside each loop at the end of the dogbone. Was going to do the quarry in one. Could combine it with coal mine... we'll see... Not sure about the other though.

Morning all,

19° and clear going for a high of 46° later. Supposed to get to 34° and some mix overnight before the front comes through dropping us into the single digits until next weekend. We may even have below 0° lows and wind chills into -10° to -20° range. Would you guys up north please close that damn door??!!!

This seem to be speculaas (dutch) or specoloos (belgium). When you want to I can give you a recipe, but you need a mold as well (made out of wood. You get a little Holland into your home.
They are speculaas in the Dutch tradition since the family that started them was from the Netherlands and brought the molds with them. They do make them year round. There is a large population of Dutch settlers in the area (Holland, MI) where the cookies are made.

Good evening gang!

Yesterday was a half day at work. Spent the afternoon with #1 son. Took him to get a haircut and give him his Christmas gifts. He live with his mother in a subsidized new apartment about 30 minutes away. Both he and his mother are full time disabled and recently had their car repossessed due to her inability to handle her income. Part of the problem is her mental state and her alcoholism. His problem is his manic-depressive condition combined with his obesity (450 lbs +) makes him pretty much unemployable. Worse yet is his refusal to leave his mother. I've offered many times to take him in, get his meds regulated, put him on a healthy diet (he lives on junk food), get him a car and a job. Sons #2 and #3 have offered the same, but he won't take advantage of it. All I can do is remind him he has a family that cares, even if he doesn't.

Today SWMBO took #4 son Christmas shopping, which let me retrieve her gift from the truck and get it wrapped and under the tree. As soon as she saw the box the questions came. "What's in it, does it need batteries, does it need accessories, do I use it inside or outside?" I told her I will tell her on the 25th. ;) Other than that I spent the day on the couch with the dog, watching movies.

Tomorrow I plan to escape at the crack of dawn to finish my Christmas shopping, before the sleepy town awakens, and the after church crowd assembles. The afternoon may bring a trip to my not so local LHS.

Are you all ready for the fat man??
Karl: I know it is sometimes tuff, but have patience and always hope for the best. Case in point. Our oldest had an aneurysm 2 weeks after the grand-daughter was born ( preemie by 2 weeks ) and subsequent stroke pretty much loosing her left side. Her body knew sumptin was up. At 30yo nobody in medical knew what to do with her. So, they created a drug cocktail that kept her from pain; whether real or imagined, and planted a 'pain pump' with Duladin (sp?) in her belly and turned her loose. That was 13 ( I think ) years ago. No therapy or PT to help - kinda just threw her to the wolves. She put on an extra weight just sitting around and got to 250Lbs ( 5'8" ). About a year and a half ago, she started to get herself off of the Oxi and could feel ..um.. things again somewhat on her left side; a year ago had the pump removed - pretty much cold turkey for both. We always were supportive and tried planting 'hints' without forcing the situation. She has been drug free since. About a month after the pain pump was removed, she started laughing and grinning - what a change. She is gaining movement on her left, no idea how far she will come out of it. Now she has a squeeze and an attitude that just don't quit. We now are hinting at PT again which we think she will go for it come Spring. She still could loose a few more pounds, but right now that is the least of our worries. Time will tell.

We hope that your son will do the same thing; sooner is better than later!

Yes I take it and can recommend it. There have been many studies of this enzyme and its benefits. It is derived from the Japanese food called "natto", which are a type of sticky and smelly fermented soybeans. Natto has long had a reputation for being good for your heart and circulatory system and people think it is because of this enzyme, nattokinase. Which have lead to it being studied a bunch.

My wife keeps trying to get me to eat natto but I keep resisting. I'd probably like it somewhat if I would try it but it just kind of is revolting looking (the food, not the supplement).

David: First of all, welcome back to the forum. I will look up Nattokinase and learn more about it. Right now, I'm on a Statin, A water pill, and a Beta Blocker, plus low dose aspirin. After tomorrow's procedure, I will have the opportunity to reassess my meds with my Cardiologist.

Good morning, zero degrees farenheit and calm. Internet has been a bugger lately so making this brief, maybe better luck later,

Trussrod, not powered that may not be easy on this model

Snow, anyone:

Good morning. 32° and partly sunny, going to the low 40s.
Thanks to everyone for their kind thoughts, encouragement and prayers, as well as sharing their personal experiences with the same procedure.
it is reassuring.
On the bright side, the weather forecast for tomorrow is favorable, and my reporting time is a more reasonable 0900. I'm anxious to get this over with, so I can move on to more pressing issues.
We are way behind on our Christmas decor and preparations. Since neither of us has felt up to it, it will be what it is. The tree has been up since Thanksgiving, so that part is in place. Hopefully, Macy's will deliver my wife's gifts in time for me to wrap them.
Need to take a photo of the fleet assembled adjacent to the unfinished engine house. Maybe I will feel up to doing some modeling after Monday.

So, I borrowed my laptop form my daughter so I could make a longer post. It is Sunday evening, around 10:30pm, here in Yokohama. Watch says 35F, which is the coldest I've seen my watch tell e while here in Japan, though we are further north than the first several days and a cold front did come through. And it may have been colder deepen in the night -- supposedly forecast to have been around 32F a few nights.

Today our church service didn't start until 1am. I slept pretty well again last night but always wake up earlier than I want to, though to be fair, I was in bed, though not asleep the whole time, for something like 8 1/2 hours. I got up, took supplements (certain order as some are liquid for empty stomach etc) and ate breakfast, which was various bread and pastry from the convenience store and a Japanese pudding (very similar to the Mexican/Spanish/Roman "Flan". I then took a nap for about an hour and got up and ready to go. The wife had gone to her sister's apartment that morning to do laundry so we were to meet her at a specific time at the next station over and ride the Toukyu line train with them. We met them right on time, and got to church a few minutes before it started. They had a lot of people there who are pretty good English speakers and they had some headsets so one guy volunteered to translate for us. Usually I try and decline as I find it distracting (even though I don't speak Japanese, I can feel the spirit of what is going on) but I am glad the guy persisted as he was really good and the speakers today were interesting.

After church the wife went back to her sisters house and we went back to the hotel. I tried to take a nap for an hour and the got up and ready. The bishop (leader of the congregation) and his wife and invited us to come over for supper and to hang out and talk. He was picking us up around 6pm so we went down and drove to his house. It was fun. Lots of interesting food and a couple other church members who had lived in Utah (Japanese) also came over and we talked and played some games. Then we came back to the hotel. This is our last night here. Tomorrow we go to Tokyo (10-20 miles N of here) and 3 nights at the Hilton on Odaiba (a man made island in the bay), that I was able to book using points from our Worldmark membership. (Everything about this trip is supposed to be budget -- points or whatever for everything if possible).

Anyway, some random pics from the last few days:

Thursday when we cam up the weather was nice and we got a good picture of Mt Fuji from the train.

IMG_0202.jpg

As I mentioned before, the wife went to the LDS Tokyo Temple Friday afternoon with her sister and the kids went to Shibuya to hang out and shop and after they were done at the temple they all met at Shibya and then went back to the temple where we also had an evening appointment with the kids. I was feeling a bit better after sleeping a bunch of the day and met them there. These are the trains from the Toukyu line I took there (the red/pink striped) and the ones we took back as a family on the same line (the orange ones). We started on a local but switched to a rapid hence two trains.

IMG_0227.jpgIMG_0309.jpgIMG_0310.jpg

This is a night time pic of the temple as well as some of the landscaping they just put in during an extensive 3 year renovation that finished this past summer.

IMG_0231.jpgIMG_0230.jpg

In Yokohama we've been riding the JR Yokohama Line from our statin Shin-Yokohama to various places and this green striped train is an example of the Yokohama Line trains. They've all been like this. I think they are E231 class. E231 used to be the main trains in the Tokyo network and as they've been replaced with newer E235 and others the E231 have been moved out to the surrounding area.

IMG_0315.jpg

To get out to that Enoshima area we talked about yesterday, we took the JR Shonan-Shinjuku line. Shonan is the name of a region or area south of Tokyo and is where that Enoshima is. The Shonan line in the old days was always an orange car with extensive green highlights or elements and sometimes they do revival liveries of it as it was a long beloved stye of livery. In homage to that, the modern (non retro / revival) cars still have an orange and green stripe on them to differentiate them. It runs on the Tokaido Line, which is a set of tracks from Tokyo to Osaka (non Bullet Train). It too is an E231 I think.

While at the aquarium I had one of the best soft ice creams there is -- black sesame. I opted for the mix with vanilla in a twist style cone and should have gone straight for the black sesame non-twist but this was good. I've made my own (home made hard) black sesame ice cream before. It is an awesome flavor.
