For the record, I love MacDonalds French fries!

My favorite French fries are the ones my wife makes or almost any French fries I happen to be eating at the moment.

I love hash browns, home fries, western fries. I love almost any fried potatoes!
Homemade are the best. Of the commercial variety, Five Guys, then In & Out, though being on the wrong side of the Mississippi I seldom get them. Mickey D's are "safe". I know they're OK and I'll eat them, but like the rest of their food, not my first choice.

Good morning, 30F and freezing rain out there, luckily only 3 miles to church we usually don't exceed 45 mph on a good day so don't need any extra time this morning

We are recuperating from our trip to the cities. We just moved out of there about 2 years ago still it feels wierd since I havent been down there in the meantime.

Todd - root beer gallons, brings back some memories. Throughout high school that was a big treat for our family, picking up a gallon jug at the local A&W on a hot summer afternoon, usually drink most of it the same day...

Chad - interesting trip details

TomO - We sold a house and moved in 2012-2013 around new years. As you know, closing set well in advance of weather forecasts, turned out to be minus 35 F the day we had to move. We were old school, did the U haul was a very tough day. Our huge Jade plant, about 4'tall, in the back of Uhaul truck survived with a few branches pruned off.

Couple shots an area of the layout I am working on, initially planning to cover the ties with the dry sand maybe leave them like this:

Some of the ground cover is new, still putting ground cover on the hillside, this is the back of the layout

Planning to make a scene here with the log car half full and man with pickaroon rolling logs off the car to the infeed deck

My son and I went to the club yesterday and had a relaxing afternoon running trains. I ran my PFE reefer drag, or as much of it as a single steamer will pull up our 2% grade, and tested that new Postal Baggage car. Surprise, it ran well, something I didn't really expect. I bought a brass diner that shortd out so badly I had to replace the brass trucks with a set from a Branchline Passenger car kit. This car did well, but it's full underbody detailing means broad curves only. I have a thing for head end cars, and I love mail trains. Here are the videos:

You wouldn't expect to see a Daylight painted GS-4 on a reefer drag, but it was done, usually after a major shopping to allow the bearings to be run in at a lower speed.

Good Morning All. Foggy again and 49°, another gloomy day in store with no sunshine until midday Tuesday. On the bright side (no pun intended), it's been 8 days since I had to start a fire in the wood-burning heater. Won't need one until Tuesday night, which most likely will burn continuously until mid-February. Although it is not unheard of here to have temperatures in the upper 70's on Christmas Day. Supposedly no rain today, then another day and a half before the wind shift Tuesday.

I only got as far as getting the new Christmas tree assembled and up yesterday. Every one of the 60 branches had three sub-branches and 35-45 branchlets to unfurl. It took both of us working on opposite sides of the tree over 90 minutes to do this. This should be the only time that it has to be done this way, as I don't expect to wrap everything back up when the season is over; just fold up the unfurled branches and hope that it can go back into the box. We switched to household chores after that ordeal, since those were mostly skipped on Friday. Decorating will commence today, and I expect to be told to stay out of the way when she starts wrapping gifts. Darn! :( I will take a little time today to stash some of the wet firewood on the covered porch out front to start drying. Usually I can dry it next to the heater, but it's not going right now. It doesn't take long as it's only wet on the outside.

I do wish to thank all for the concerns and the well wishes regarding our deer incident Friday night. I am still mystified about the no where to be seen body. I do hope that he is recovering somewhere in the nearby woods.

I continued ballasting out in the train shed yesterday, I can see the finish line for the main line and the passing siding. One of the two loading tracks is about half complete, I haven't started on the other one yet. I have chosen to leave the track arrangement at the north end as is, partly due to the fact that I can't readily get a LH switch to convert the second track into a double-ended spur. Another factor is the tail track would have to move to a less advantageous location. That played into the equation more so than the switch, as I could have always left that end unfinished until I got it. No mundane pictures of ballasting today, so no wasted electrons.
Since I have no project pictures, I'll post from the archives today. As many of you know, I like laser-cut wood structures, Bar Mills in particular. One that I built back in 2019 was Oakleaf Shipping & Storage.

Gary - That's a nice layout that Brian has. I like seeing how differently he treated and detailed many of the same structures that I have.
Jaz - Depending on the time of year here, the vultures and buzzards also have to share carrion with the flies. When it's really fresh, within 2-3 hours, the coyotes have to be chased off. The coyotes leave on their own after the blood is no longer warm. Mother Nature can be gruesome at times.
Louis - I am not really bothered by the deer incident, but was just shaken for a little bit. I am actually fortunate to have lived here 42 years before it actually happened. Wild boars are worse, but I have avoided them as well.
James - I have an overnight dehumidifier which works well, but the hearing aids themselves are not waterproof.
I am not sure why picking up roadkill became illegal. It's part of a law that makes it illegal to hunt along public roads or right of ways.

Everybody have a great day.

Well today was pretty much a total loss, went out to the car, found it dead as the proverbial Dodo, seems our current cold spell had killed the battery, as I need to get to work at 6am tomorrow, decided I'd call the AA just because I'm a member and getting a garage out on a Sunday costs stupid money, yep, confirmed, battery dead, fitted a new battery at £154, so between the major service last week and this, close to a grand gone.:(

So to cheer myself up I decided I'd get some railway related work done, and fit KD's to 6 of the cars I recently bought, swapped out the two trucks on the grey MOW crane tender, (plastic wheels, axels rusted through) which then decided to fall apart, (the trucks, that is) so now need to get new trucks for it, really getting fed up with Bettendorf trucks, swapping out wheels is a pain, or it could simply be me being heavy handed. :(

Got a reply from Mainline Hobby Supply, re: the two power trucks I need for my switcher, seems he doesn't have any more, suggested I contact Aline/PPW, as apparently they bought all of Athearn's old stock, so see what comes back, I've found some on fleaBay, but if I can get new I'd prefer it, and price wise only a few $ difference.

Good afternoon, all! We started the day with thunderstorms, cleared by 11 AM the sun peeked out about noon and now cloudy and overcast.
The Christmas tree went up yesterday with help from daughter, grandson and great granddaughter. She's 4, and if you don't mind all ornaments in one area, she did good.

I did some work on the Val-U Fuel and Oils kit. This is a Showcase Miniature building. I was surprised by some of the detail. The 55 gallon drums actually have bungs.

A reminder, I'm working in N scale. The most tedious is the rafter tails. They are absolutely tiny and are individually glued on

Overall I'm liking this build.

Sorry to hear about your car problems Smudge, glad that you did get some train time in though!
Yeah, so was I, been a while since I've done much on the rolling stock, all was well till my daughter phoned in a major panic, seems a "friend" of hers turned up under the influence of drugs, and collapsed in her apartment, so she had to administer CPR, till the Ambulance and Police turned up, also I found out this is the same guy who broke into her place a few weeks ago and tried stealing her stuff, but my daughter caught him in the act.

Now my eldest is about 5'2" and around 110lbs, so not a big girl by any means, but I have always taught her to take no nonsense from anyone, she didn't this time, after she stabbed him in the leg her ran off, why the heck he would go back I don't know, anyway he's now in a hospital handcuffed to the bed, and under arrest.

All in all that's resulted in a three hour phone call calming her down, fortunately I've her boss's phone number, so he's aware that she may not be up to going into work tomorrow.

All in all, not a bad day, hopefully tomorrow will be better, but as -5c (25F) is forecast for tonight/tomorrow plus a couple of inches of snow, I doubt it will be much better, ah well, such is life in paradise.:)

G'nite folks, I'll make sure Flo's got the coffee going for you early birds or night owls.

Something very strange just happened. I was working on a project when a piece fell on the floor and when I looked down believe it or not it was there. That never happens. I usually spend 10 minutes looking for it. An exacta knife rolled off my desk one day and I never found it. It's still missing I guess with my dremel tool some where.

Here in Kobe, Japan it is 8:15am Monday morning. 42F it says and supposedly will be rainy. Jet lag not too bad. We were so tired when we got here we were able to sleep. We did nap Sunday afternoon but mostly slept well last night. I’ve been using a small amount of melatonin to adjust but the others haven’t, except the wife who did the first night but not the second.

I got a cheap bluetooth keyboard for the iPad Pro and just got it working this morning. Kind of different experience from my normal iPad experience. I got it so I could carry it around in case I am needed for my servers I run on the side without having to drag a heavy laptop around.

To French fries. There are two different styles of French fries In terms of how they are prepared prior to cooking. Most fast food fries are aiming for crispness and the potatoes are soaked to help remove a lot of the extra starch. This allows them to be crisp and crunchy. Most of the feast food places do this and also apply a coating to enhance crispness and to make up for the crappy “vegetable” oil used instead of the beef lard.

The other way is to use the fresh potatoes without any soaking and no starch removal beforehand. For example, In-N-Out slices the potatoes with a big hand machine right in front of you and soon they’re after cooks them. When fresh they are very good but I personally find that they are kind of starchy, dense, and not great after they’ve sat for 10-15 minutes and cooled down.

Today’s agenda is to go to Costco and help my sister in law get groceries and also find stuff we like, and to eat at the food court (different food than US Costcos but they do have Pizza and hot dog), get our rail passes validated and go to Osaka (me and the son — women will go other shopping). I want to go to a large train store (actually the “Kids Land” special stores from an electro chain called Joshi Denki — kind of a super Best Buy — there are several stores in the same area with special emphasis in each one and one has a whole floor of model railroads [and another floor of models and another floor of air soft guns]). We also want to go to Yodobashi Camera — another very large electro store that has some model railroad stuff as well and sells tax free to tourists.

The first day or three here is usually decompressing from the travel with stuff like shopping and the lIke.

Thursday we head to Yokohama for 4 days to visit the other sister-in-law and then 3 days in Tokyo. After that back to Kobe for the duration. We’ll do short day trips and various activities yet to be planned. Maybe a one night trip in Kyushu — I was proposing Nagasaki.
