Hey Trussrod, ran the Shay this morning at Brian’s home layout! It worked and looked great! The Shay, 2 log cars and the caboose for $100 with DCC installed. He has an awesome layout as well, sad that he is moving, it would have been great modelling with him. Some pics of the new train purchased and some pics of his layout. Some of Brian’s structures are scratchbuilt and weathered, the bluenose built from scratch as well.

Gary that shay looks fantastic! You did well on that deal! Beautiful! Glad it is a solid runner for you too! Your friend Brian's layout is very nice too! Thanks for sharing the pics!

Good Evening All. Pretty much rained all damn day, albeit lightly mostly. There's is 1.4" in the gauge in 12 hours. From what I can judge by the radar movement, it will continue for another 3 hours or so.
Drove the 1.25 miles to the mail box this afternoon, no deer in sight either along the road or close by in the fields on either side. Like I posted, he was rather large and must have survived. Or someone drove by and claimed him for themselves. Interestingly there is some decrepit furniture stacked there, kind of like a roadside memorial that his fellow deer built!;) It was not there yesterday or last night. I didn't get out and look for blood as it was raining. Rain and hearing aids don't mix. A badly placed raindrop can screw them up forever.
Meanwhile, the yard is getting fertilized by an especially large flock of robins who came by Wednesday and have stayed. There must be over 500 of them. They have been cleaning up the wild sunflower seed heads along the road and the hackberries from the trees in the fence lines. They're rather noisy in the morning, but it is a pleasant chorus. Right now, they are all quietly roosting in the trees. Bobcats find them delicious, hence the silence. As I recall from the past, they'll be here for another 3-4 days. I think that the Cardinals who live here year round find them quite intrusive.

Good Night.

Willie As you already know I have been wearing hearing aids forever...since I was 4. Please consider getting a dehumidifier. I have this one and it is the best one out there for the money. Although my hearing aids are water proof as I buy the best and state of the art tech every 2-3 years due to my hearing impairment. Sometimes when I wear mine more than 18 hours a day I use a aeresol air can to blow out the tubes as moisture does build up in there from sweat etc. but I always put my hearing aids in the dehumidfier every nite using this device before going to bed..

by the way I am glad you and the missus are ok! Sorrry about the car. If I was your neighbor I would have gotten that deer for ya and dressed him out and salvaged the good meat right quick. It actually amazes me on Texas law there though being a state that really is proactive in wildlife conservation etc. Interesting to say the least.

I never understood folks who dip their french fries in mayonnaise. I guess that I should try it once before I condemn it.

I had a roommate in college who did that. He had lived in Belgium and Eastern France and that is where he picked up the habit he said.

I’ve never understood the habit either though if it was Japanese mayo I would understand (tends to have a slightly more vinegar taste and is way better than US mayo — also has, if made in Japan, MSG, which makes everything taste better ).

but nowadays with the you must not kill this that o r the other people do not want to be associated/blamed and animals that are road kill or even injured are left which is frankly awful. plus of course there is not the issue of how to dispose at one time you could leave it for carrion in a safer spot or just bury it,nowadays all the rules forbid these type of actions and Marge fines can occur, so again people just go past and think not my problem not getting involved.

where’s “Granny” when you need her?

(specific cultural reference and specifically a movie)

So we had to get up around 2am Friday morning to get ready for going to the airport. Thursday night I rented a minivan at the airport (about 17 miles away) so we would have a good way to get to the airport at 4am. A one day rental for $54 out the door plus a gallon or two of gas was probably cheaper than an Uber or shuttle and my normal airport ride (mom) is away right now.

We caught our plane to DFW and made it safely there. We had a small amount of time and got some breakfast at Chick-Fil-A as that was very near the gate and the kids were hungry.

Got boarded for the flight to Tokyo (Haneda) and we ended up in the second row of economy, in the 4 middle seats (complete row of the middle section). It was ok. 13 hour 45 scheduled. Was long. Was about 10 min late leaving and got in to Haneda airport late Saturday afternoon Japan time. (because we go across the international date line we leave Friday morning and get there Saturday afternoon. Coming back is to our advantage though as we sometimes land before we left wall clock time).

At Haneda it was kind of messed up. Immigration and all that was fast and easy though I had misunderstood the pre-registration and only I had a pre-registration completed for immigration so we had to spend a few minutes manually filling out the arrival cards for the rest of the family. Japan (besides China) seems to be the only place still suffering under Covid-fear and so we had to show either proof of min 3 doses vaccination or a negative non-home based (lab based of various allowable types) Covid tests. We got checked by American Airlines before we could board in Salt Lake City but JAL checked us again at DFW. But getting off the plane in Japan was a breeze since I had printed off the blue screen and QR code for each persons’ pre-registration for “quarantine” so we were good to go and breezed through that section

We had a connecting domestic flight to Osaka Itami airport (which was the main Osaka International airport before they built the artificial island and new airport 30-35 years ago). After customs we had been told to expect a luggage drop off again but nothing was found. We were in the terminal main hall. We found an”domestic connecting flight” sign so went and followed that and found a check-in. Hmmmmm. Wife asked a guy and he said we had to get a bus to Terminal 1 (we were in Terminal 3). Hmmmmm. We found the bus and got to Terminal 1. It was getting close to the boarding time for the new flight. No luggage drop off either. Finally found someone who said we needed to go to the North Hall (we were in the South Hall) and go to the special luggage handling door. We did that and got our suitcases handed off and headed to security. As in the US you have to show or scan your boarding pass to get to the actual security place and our boarding passes wouldn’t scan. The attendants there looked them up and said our boarding passes had been canceled. I didn’t catch exactly why but I guess a combination of time (closeness to departure) and the failure of the “special baggage reception” attendants to mark them as confirmed when we rechecked the luggage caused the problem. They apologized and reissued them and we got through security and to the gate. They were already boarding so we got on and in our seats. A350 plane for the 1 hour flight. Wasn’t bad plane.

we landed and go off the plane. Everyone wanted a pit stop and so we found the appropriate men’s and women’s rooms (over here they still know what the difference is) and we also found some vending machines. Had to get our first drinks.

We wandered to the baggage claim and our stuff was some of the first off so we grabbed our bags and headed to the Osaka monorail. It was about an hour and a half between 1 stop on the monorail, 2 different Hankyu Railways trains, and then 25 minutes on a Kobe Subway “subway” train (more like another commuter train in size and function) and we were almost to my wife’s sister’s house. She and her husband picked us up for the 5 min drive (13 Minute walk) to their house. Finally made it after about 27 or 28 hours since getting out of bed to start the journey.

We sat around and got fed and talked and took “baths” or showers and finally got to bed. Slept pretty well but got ip for church this morning.

we wanted to go to a congregation where we knew people and the wife had gone before we got married so we had close to 90 min of walk/subway/train to get there. 2 hours worth of 1 hour general worship and 1 hour men’s / women’s meetings and then the same travel to get back home. Lunch and then a nap.

Now sitting here waiting for Sunday supper.

here are two pics from trains we rode today.

Good Morning All!
30F and dark
About 6" more of the white stuff - 16 -20" on ground.

Willie: Glad the only things that got hurt were the car and the beast!

Road Kill: In my neck of the woods - you hit you get; although most people just make sure they are dead and leave them. County has a truck that checks the roads out daily. You usually do not see anything that is not fresh. Before the Hit and Get law, everybody would take the back strap as that usually does not get impacted with adrenaline which is a real meat killer. You still can grind up the thing for dog food if you wish. If the animal was standing on the side of the road and jumped, not much adrenaline and you can take the opposite side of the hit which is usually pretty good meat for you, other for dogs.

Fries: Micky'd fries are crap as all have said. Well, unless ya need cleaned out. WhatAburger, In & Out and 5 guys ( before they closed ) to me are the better choices for fries. There is an A&W inside the Space Age truck stop on I84 in Oregon about MP 180 that still does stuff old school. We used to get a gallon of Root Beer and a couple of Papa Burgers with fries that were killer to get us down the road. If there, probably was going for home time and had about 8 hours more to get there. I eat fries just about any way you can - plain or dipped in Mayo, Ranch, Thousand, Tarter/Cocktail sauce and yes, even Ketchup. Same for tater-tots. Nowadays though, I only get a small order cuz of Type2; but they taste so good!

Morning all,

Currently 31° and freezing fog in the area. We are under a dense fog advisory at this time as well. Supposed to get to 48° and the temps drop through the rest of the week.

Kind of nice seeing all the kids for their birthday. We went to a Tex\Mex place that has something for everyone in the family. I chose a chimichanga for a change. It was ok, but a bit overcooked. Had the son and grandson in the car coming home and my son asked why I didn't have my usual chicken strips. I replied I didn't want anything fried. He turned and looked at me funny and the grandson in the back seat started laughing. I said gotch ya....and started laughing as well. For those that don't know a chimichanga is basically a fried burrito.

Hope for some train time later. Working on laundry and ripping (copying) the rest of the Christmas music to my computer.

Good morning modelers, travelers and mayonnaise on FF disbelievers. 33f degrees going to 37 and all that Friday white stuff is gettin slushy. Mid 30’s till Wednesday when the guessers say the rains return for 3 days and the temps will be in the 40’s.

We did not attend the Volleyball game on campus last night but watched on TV. A 5 setter the Badgers lost ending their chance to defend their NCAA title next weekend in Omaha, Ne. It was still a great season and the last 4 years of being in the Final 4 was some super Volleyball.

Today, I will start on the ground cover on the paper mill module. Testing was done yesterday after attaching the track feeders to the power bus.

The other thing I will do is take a final spin on my layout. The structures are off, wrapped and put away in 3 bins. The granddaughter and my wife were super helpers yesterday. The the packaging service for the household is coming on 12/19, the movers on 1/4, the closing on 1/5 and delivery on 1/6. 1/4 the house will get unpacked and the other 3/4 into storage. We are temporarily moving into what was our offices, what I have used for my address for packages, mail and across from one of the last apartment complexes we owned.

The knee feels fine. I know the hip is there but it’s not painful. It’s actually better for me standing then sitting in the cave in my chair. Upstairs on the love seat is fine to sit.

enjoy the day

For the record, I love MacDonalds French fries!

My favorite French fries are the ones my wife makes or almost any French fries I happen to be eating at the moment.

I love hash browns, home fries, western fries. I love almost any fried potatoes!
