Good morning. It's cloudy and 54.
I'm heading out now to pick up an application at a local auto shop. A couple of incidents last Friday told me everything I want to know about the place I'm now working, where everybody is trying to throw everybody else under the bus to make you look bad, and themselves look good. Also, any infractions seem to be severely dealt with--except when you run a really expesive trailer into the building, causing $10k in damage.

One of the reasons I don't post threads here. Had similar experience, or pick it apart on how they would do it and you're not doing it right. I could've done a thread on the grain train I did but why bother.
I have to be careful of doing that,I want to show people something and pop up a picture, but I try to avoid it and pop up a thread as reference, one o f the nice things in the coffee shop is we can post without ruining someone else’s thread

Morning all,

Spent most of the last hour catching up from the weekend.

Helped the SIL setup his WiFi at the new house. Actually got him started and then I had to leave as his ISP couldn't do the work on Saturday. 45 minutes after I left, they finally remotely set his access point to where he could setup his own network. I told the daughter and the wife he was over-thinking the process. He said once he had the main switch\router up and then the first access point (of 3), that it was pretty easy.

Not much else over my weekend. Didn't get to the trains at all as I fell asleep in the chair yesterday afternoon for 3 hours. I couldn't wake up, so I must have needed it.

In reading all the comments from the weekend, Dell is a local company to Austin Tx. It was started there in the 80's. Michael Dell started building computers for others while a student UTA.

Cute story: I was talking on Friday to the younger of the 3rd grade granddaughters. She had just finished talking with my wife and wanted to talk to me. She then asked "how's grandma?" I said "She's fine. Why?". She started giggling and said "I heard she got run over by a reindeer". She said she heard the song on the radio and had never heard it before. The wife thought it was funny as well, although it isn't one of her favorite songs.

Good Morning All. Mostly cloudy, windy and 51° at 0530. It will probably get colder before the sun comes up with a high today of only 52° later. Possible freeze tonight before slowly warming back up into the 80's by Thursday. Saturday brings a repeat pattern.
Yesterday was laundry day here before I went outside and split wood. I am now up to splitting five stumps a day without any pain. Some of them even get 3-4 splits each. Not in any real hurry except for getting them up off the ground to dry.

Flo, I'll take a couple of breakfast burritos with sausage, egg and cheese this morning. Spicy salsa and OJ to go with it.

Thanks for all of the likes and comments regarding the building progress and the sunset pictures from yesterday; Christian, OB Ken, Steve J, IB Ken, Rick, Sherrel, Troy, Tom O, Karl, Gary, Curt, Hughie, Guy, Joe, Tom, George, Mikey, Jaz, Jesse, Patrick.

Short day out in the train shed yesterday, as is usual for a Sunday. So I just ran my trains for about an hour. I am paused on the latest kitbashed structure until I get its landing site prepared.
Here it is in position.
IMG_8418.JPG

It is situated on a corner and I intend to have a small outdoor patio out front. I won't make the sidewalks until I have a better idea exactly where the roads will be placed. That's a Woodland Scenics Landmark structure kit called Stone Bakery next to it that is just snapped together for sizing purposes. I will add an interior to the coffee shop and a few details over the next few days. I think that it turned out well considering it's simplicity.

Jesse - I also have a low esteem for televangelists, however I do rank them above lawyers and most congresspersons. You're lucky not to have to deal with the Left Coast people influx where you are. I can't imagine ex-Floridians being as bad. I sometimes get ex-Kalifornians move out in the country near me, but they are usually gone in 18 months or less when they get tired of being 25+ miles from the closest Starbucks.
Jaz -
sold a e bed deli
What the hell is "a e bed deli"?
OB Ken - The Hobby Lobby nearest me is generally hit or miss when it comes to model railroading stuff. The only trains that they have are those cheapo Bachmann sets, but sometimes they have a good selection of off-brand scenery supplies and animal figures. Paint and painting supplies are plentiful, but scattered throughout the damn store. Some in the arts section, some in the hobby section and some in the crafts section. Plus they rearrange the whole store several times a year which makes things just that much harder to find.
Greg - I am right there with you on the school taxes. I haven't had kids in the school in over 20 years, and my hay field has never had kids there, but I still have to pay. That is the biggest chunk of my tax bill, over 68%. The hospital isn't even close at 15%. Judging from the local roads, they get the second lowest percentage around 8%.
I know that my LHS owner before retiring also loved cash for reasons besides the CC fees, it was tax-free income. Another reason that he gave extra discounts to cash-paying customers like me. When he did retire, the entire store was 40% off MSRP, but selection diminished rapidly. He gave me free of charge over 30 of the discontinued Walther's modular wall kits, however many are still unused since Walther's didn't produce enough wall columns to match up with their wall kits.
Hughie -
In the old days, did you ever see the tree at Rockerfeller Center. Easily 65 feet. Mine is slightly taller thar a two story building.
I actually saw it in person as a youngster growing up in Brooklyn. My aunt, who was also my Godmother took me by subway at least three times that I can remember. I was judging your tree by the four story structure across from it in your second post.

Everybody have a great day. Stay safe.

Op session coming up next Saturday. Gotta start setting things up. I'll get the train built up today in the classification yard along with the Waybills then tomorrow will setup the outgoing cars in the industry sidings and service the locomotives. Trains will typically be about 30 cars, give or take a few.
The theme this time will be, the Union Pacific in the mid 1950s. I'll have a mix of steam and diesel locomotives of the era including turbines, Big Boy, Challengers, J9000s, PA and E8 diesels on the mainline and smaller steam in the classification yard. All the intermodal and auto racks will come off the layout along with any other modern era rolling stock.
I'm also planning a Toy Run for 26 December for anyone who got new train stuff for Christmas. They can bring it out and just run it all they want on the empire.

Terry, the world is out there to be conquered. Go get it. What has transpired since the takeover in my mind is a deliberate attempt to rid themselves of existing staff. Not sure if I will ever understand this tactic by a management group but while not abnormal your case seems extreme to me. Years ago while doing case studies for my MBA there was a statistic that said when a company buys another that established employees of the purchased company 46% leave within the 1st year. Not sure if that is true or even close in these years of pandemic but much of the crew you work with would have left on their own.

Terry, you have received lots of advice, good thoughts, sympathy and encouragement from the folks in the diner. Again, best to you and your family. I believe everyone here KNEW that soon it would hit you that you have to get out. Unfortunately it seems that time has come. Heads up and be your best.

Hello Happy Fellow Modelers !
I'm looking for very old Bachmann freight cars with plastic wheels and horn hook couplers. Do these cars run well ? Or do I have another bad idea as usual ? Thanks for your help.
If ya replace the hook horn couplers with Kadee and replace the plastic wheels. Throw a little weathering on it then put it in a string of other upgraded tank cars, it might look and roll ok.

Way back in the day, I saw ELmo and Patsy perform at a club in College Station, TX (yep, nuther proud Aggie!) They were great - I still remember that show and that was .... 1981?

Good morning from mildly frozen So Central Wisconsin. The winds are at 25mph with gusting up to 40+. Looking out towards the woods, we are surrounded 75% with trees, I can see a few downed trees but many branches on the ground. The high today should hit 29 which is 1 degree more then the 28 we have now. BUT, but the wonderful wind chill makes it feel like 12 out there. Fun times in Wisconsin during December.

GMA did a story on Bob Dole and his passing this morning. While I never voted for him, he is the type of senator we could use 100 of right now. A gentleman who understood and DID what his constituents voted him in office for, their agenda not his!

Voting, I voted in 2016 because I believe the lady was an outright but not ever caught criminal. I voted for the current guy because I thought the office needed to be respected again and he could re-unite the country. We now know because of issues from BOTH sides of the aisle that won’t happen.

Property taxes, I know we pay them and they are high.

School taxation, I run hot and cold on this one. Yes at times I feel because I don’t have kids in the school district I should be exempted. But, I do have grandkids in school. What I vehemently disagree with is senior citizens having to pay the increases on referendums to rebuild or newly build schools. If you guys and gals want to see a taxation boondoggle look up the Verona High School, in Verona, Wi. on Google Earth. It is a 2 year old complex/campus that will hold 2200 students even though there are only 1400 now attending. Yes, plan for the future. It is the most expensive school building and campus in the state and it truly wasn’t needed.
Just to piss Terry and the daughter off I call it the Taj Mahal of USA high schools.

Trains, more weathering plus adding some debris to the pulpwood car decks.

Good morning all. Thanks for the comments of support. It means more than you realize.

Ran trains for a bit while wifey went to the local gym place to walk their treadmill. No actual hobby-ing, though, Just breaking up a 12 car train I had put together. Now likely I won't start on the main loop until January as Life gets more and more busy approaching the end of Advent.

Kids cancelled last night - - - kind of. THe girls pleaded tiredness and busy-ness. But then the oldest girl (the engaged one) decided to come over to see her dog. So wife and I walked up to Hyvee and got stuff to make Spaghetti Puttanesca - my specialty dish. Coktails and then her fiancé decided to come over after his work for school - so joined us for dinner. It was fun, but we ended up staying up much too late and having one or two glasses of wine too many. After the dinner wine, I opened a nice St. Emilion for us. Yummo!

Now working from home and planning to go to the mall for a long walk. Way too cold outside at 9F with 20 kt wind. Wife working from home today, also so will have the day with her.

Three years ago, we started a new tradition. As a pastor, Advent can get very busy and it is easy to lose focus on US. So brilliant wifeykins got an Advent calendar and put in there something each day that she would do for me. It was great, so the past two years we changed it alternate every other day. Friday, her calendar item was a "Mad. Bath" - - - Mad. being short for Madeira. I sent her to the tub with a glass of sherry. Saturday, I got a nice foot rub. Today we have a "quiet walk together." Sometimes it is too risque to share in this polite society! It has been a great way to help us keep sight of our relationship and not get pulled too thin!

Well - - time for some real work - sermons don't write themselves! Well, actually, sometimes they do!

LHS - - Very fortunate to have three in the cities. Closest is Becker Model Trains in New Brighton. Good guy. You can tell he is a bit hesitant to invest a lot of time until he can sense that a patron is serious and going to spend money in the shop. He has been helpful to me and I do shop there. ANother LHS in Scale Model Supplies in St. Paul. Great store! Filled to the gun'ls with lots and lots of train and other hobby goods. It is a bit far, so don't get there too often. Their current line stuff is a tad pricey, but they have a large inventory of out-of-date items that go pretty cheap. The Last is Hobby Hub (or Hub Hobby, never sure) which has a location in Edina and one elsewhere but don't remember where. They have trains and things for model RR, but I think their big draw is RC models. They have lots and lots of things. I don't usually go there unless I happen to be in the area for other reasons and have time. Haven't bought much from them.

Again, thanks for the kind words, - - - Steve J
