CHET- Congrats on another successful hunt. Saving a lost soul has to be gratifying.

If you "search" nash rambler, you'll find the song "BEEP BEEP" . And a host of others. AAAHH, memories.

Afternoon All,

Spent several hours working on the yard today. It went pretty well. It is basically the mirror image of the coal job that I just finished. The thing that I could not believe I did (stupid) was that I was scrapping up some cork roadbed by a old T/O that I intended to use but the putty knife clipped the end of a rail and it pulled a rail 3/4 of the way out on the T/O and bent it so I could not try to reset the rail. Luckily I had ordered 3 T/O's instead of the needed 2, but it really irritates me. Now I need to get another for the oil project.

I soldered jumpers on the backs of the T/O's and got everything put together mechanically. I rolled my longest car through it both ways. Found a dip and fixed that. Next is to test it with power then with locos.

Ray- Very nice track work.

Terry- Sorry to hear about your shifter issues. I am generally happy with BLI other than the L1, but BLI made it good.

NG- I am pretty much done with buying locos also. I would like to get a I1sa to go with the coal theme, but I'm not sure it will run well on layout curves.

Chessie- Sorry to hear another loco took a header but it's good there was only minor damage. Any better luck on the ballasting?

BigE- Have fun running trains...or not! I saw both posts.

Chet- Nice job finding the missing person.

Here is what I did today. The T/O all the way to the left goes to a passing siding.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Phil - It could have been me, but I have a bit more sense that to have gone where he went.

After retiring my 2014 calendar I scanned the photos. I am a STEAM fan. Here's one of them.

Looking fine Curt.

Chet .... Thumbs up on the successful search for the snowmobiler ... Also, I like the B&O 2-10-2 photo. I used to have a Rivarossi model of the B&O 2-10-2. Nice engine.

Curt .... Your track work is looking great !

I haven't made another attempt at ballast today. Had to get some more supplies today. I'll give it another go tonight. Hopefully it'll go better this time. But my bluebox is a stout one! Just knocked the coupler off which looking at my track everything is fine. I ran several test loops around the layout afterwards and it was fine. Maybe too much speed for the curve is all I can figure out.

Justin

Speed kills! Can't help but bump em up a wee bit faster and faster to 126 on the ole NCE controller till everybody is just a HUMMIN along and then the inevitable coupler failure has to ruin the flow! Had two "M-48, M-60" ish(I'm not sure what they think these are supposed to be!) tanks on one flatcar as an experiment and the weight kept making them uncouple at the same curve every time, took one off and put the one centered as it should be and no problem at max speed! Even in HO scale, the weight distribution on each individual car matters I guess!
WIN_20160124_181421.JPGIt looks cool but it's a no more doubling up of tanks on one flatcar, unless I want to keep it 'under 90'! LOL!

I think I may be at the legendary 'limit' to this system configuration. With anything over 5 going at max speed I DID notice a wee slowdown in spots from a few of the runners. "Configuration #2" of the layout WILL be broken into two power blocks, but I'm only planning on one power feed to each block. A combination of stubborn and lazy is my excuse for not doing too much wiring if I can help it. I can always add more power feeds if needed and the 'temp' way the track is going to go down will allow it without too much fuss and feathers.

Dam it I hate when this happens!!!!
I laid down a couple hours ago for "quick nap". Then I get up just before 1900 - thinking it was 0700 and forgetting I was just taking a "quick nap", I got up and started to get ready for work. My normal weekdays early morning news was not on the radio and I noticed on the clock sitting next to it said it's Sunday.
Now I'm all confused!!! How could it be Sunday? Yesterday was Sunday. Then I stepped outside to verify there is no sun coming up. That confirmed it! There is however, a most awesome, huge, bright, full moon just above the tree-line due east of me.

Guess I'll have a few beers, cook some supper and try again for a real night's sleep later on. Hope I didn't ruin that chance for the night. Got a bad enough problem with that already.
I suppose it takes more than a single dose of iron supplement before I start getting some energy levels back up to where I'm not feeling lethargic half-way through the day. Ya think? :D

Hiya gang!

Winter storm Jonas has kicked my butt! We measured several areas of snow today, ranging from 26 to 40 inches, depending on how the wind blew. It was too much for the Cub Crapette, so SWMBO started hand shoveling at 8 a.m,,then stopped for lunch at 12, then finished right around 3. 16x75 driveway, front sidewalk to the front porch, rear walkway from the back of the garage to the basement stairwell, the basement stairwell, the finally the back deck. To say we are tired is an understatement!, Sore too!

Here's a shot I took just before lunch as SWMBO was "feeding the chickens" with the ice melt.

Luckily one of the local farm boys had come down the street with a large John Deere with a heated cab and a bucket on the front. For a small fee he took all the hard packed remnants from the snowplow and removed them. Thank goodness, that stuff was hard to move.

Here's a fun pic. Its the snow after we pulled my truck out, step bumper, the "Chevrolet" lettering and even a partial backwards tag!

I'm now done with snow for this year, Bring on the sand, palm trees and Margaritas!

Karl, that reminds me of the winter of 03-04 in upstate New York. I went there to work an outage at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station right after they had a record snowfall. I'd never seen so much snow in my life! The city of Oswego was loading snow into trucks and dumping it in Lake Ontario. It may be a pretty area in the summer but it was mighty depressing while I was there. Out of 36 days, the sun only shined for part of two.

Good morning ! Already up to 38f and should climb to low 60's. Better than yesterday, and a whole lot better than up north. To cold for me to run trains in the garage. Just can't take the cold anymore.
Hope y'all stay well and do not lose electricity.
Still awed by every ones pictures of your pikes.

Phil

p.s. BOB, it reminds me of the blizzard of 48/49. Lived in Jamaica , L.I. at the time.

Good morning. It's 29, and mostly dark outside. Except for the snow. That's white. Except where it's brown. Or yellow...

Good Morning All. 50 degrees under partly cloudy skies here this morning, predicted to go back up to the lower 60's again today before the winds shift back from the north around 1400 and it cools off tomorrow. I am making the weekly grocery/beer trek this morning and will pick up some onion plants for the garden at the local nursery.
Yesterday I posted that there were many ways to ballast your track. David and Ray indicated that they apply white glue to the sides of the roadbed before adding ballast. This is what works for them. Like Eric, I have never found this to be necessary on all the layouts that I have ballasted. I spread the ballast and mist it thoroughly with a 40:60 mixture of IPA and water before applying 50:50 white glue/water, which I dribble out of an old glue bottle. Speaking for me only, I have way too much track to be doing something that labor intensive. Like I said, there are many ways to accomplish the same task.

Karl - Glad it's you and not me. That's a pretty impressive heap from a single storm although Chet and Dave B. are probably wishing that's all they had to deal with.
Curt - Let's hope that you don't have any "personal" photos on your computer. Otherwise, impressive progress.
Chet - Kudos to you. In the unlikely event that I ever go skiing, I'm coming to your neighborhood!

In the train shed yesterday, I made a few "generic" Woodland Scenics trees. Some were refurbished from my previous layout, some were from scratch. I don't try too make any specific variety...just populate the area being scenicked at the time. I truly admire those with the talent and patience to model the "real" thing. Didn't spend much time out there yesterday, and won't today either as the weather is conducive to my outdoor activities. I also don't believe in spending eight hours a day in the train shed, then it is just another "job", I don't want jobs anymore. LOL Once in a while is OK though.

Have a great day everyone.
Willie
