LOL! THAT is news! Winter of 87-88 at Benning it snowed about a half an inch and the base was paralyzed for three days! A serious comedy unfolded on the streets and trails before our eyes! "Clusterschtup" is, I believe, the precise correct military term for what we saw, coined by the brilliant military thinker Von Clauswitz!(?) As a raw boot I was sure scratchin my poor misshapen(goat smellin!) haid as to HOW-n-the-HECK we ever triumphed in Europe in the winter of 44-45!
My little experiment was a complete unmitigated disaster! Actually scrounged up about 60 rollers but many were DRAGGERS and I had a HECK of a time even getting them moving! The DD's wheels was just a spinnin! Ground out about half a lap of one loop and coupler issues set in. Did not want to burn it up so I did not hammer it for very long at all. I need more metal wheels! I'm waiting on doing consist action until the grades go in, I'll need em then!
Well all of my progress is for not. Can't even ballast my track. No way of gluing it down and well West Virginia is in a state of emergency and all the roads are closed. So yeah looks like three days of running trains and well wishing I had something to drive on with. I can't even do scenery cause of this glue issue. It makes me rather mad.
CS3, I take it you live in West Virginia? Hope you're OK there. CNN has said that by morning things will be REALLY bad for a large part of the east. Predicted wind gusts up to 75 MPH are possible in some areas and total snow accumulation up to 30 inches possible. Combine the wind with the snow and they're predicting snow drifts of 5 feet or more.
About three years ago, we had 20" of snow and 25 MPH winds. That was a horrible situation! I can't imagine what this could be like.
I think the paint was a good move for your track. Really makes it look good.
Yeah Bob I do live in West Virginia. Sitting on about 12" maybe more of snow. Doesn't sound like much to some on here but for us here its a lot. I had plans on using these snow days to get a lot done on the layout but with my scenery glue being a pain I just don't see me getting anywhere with it. Oh and I agree with you Bob on the painting of the track. It really killed off that toy train look that it had. I'm pleased with the results. It'll look really good once I get ballast in place and get my scenery going. https://youtu.be/RRjbM_Vd8XY
I'm actually using the woodland scenics glue. I've used it on my last three builds with good success. I lost out this time because the spray nozzle I had just wouldn't do anything. Shoot on my last build I used a Windex bottle. If I can dig up one around here it would be great. I've never tried the white glue and water. I assume it would be worth while? I wonder if it holds better than what I'm using. I did use white glue for my roadbed and its solid! More solid than I thought it would be.
Looks as if it's going to be very bad getting around the NE for a few days. I really feel bad for all the domesticated animals who will have to bear the brunt of staying out in the cold and searching for food during this kind of weather. I also hope that everyone else had the foresight to plan ahead with the chances of power outages and not being able to get to the store for food or the drug store for medications, or get to a doctor or hospital. Speaking of all that .. BOB ,, how are things fairing for your family?
Did not accomplish much of anything today. Yesterday I overdid it and paid the price with aches and hurts everywhere. I did manage to turn on the yard waterline == guess what == still have a drip leak in the same place. Damn plastic screw fitting into the brass hose bib just will not seat properly, and I used a lot of Teflon tape too. I'll give it a few days and replace it with a metal nipple and a plastic coupling and see if that will work better.
GARRY Another outstanding photo. KARL What is that portal standing all alone supposed to represent? I guess it's the Gateway Arch in St Louis being its SF on the rails, lol, but SF didn't get to STL until the Burlington merger? Anyway .. like the train!
Chessie .. your painting and ballasting look good.
CS3, lookup a recipe for ballasting glue. Some add a drop or two of dish soap or rubbing alcohol to help it wick or spread to get good coverage.
Sherrel, my MIL is in a nursing home fairly close by, about 30 miles from here. My wife spent much of the day seeing that everything was signed and in order. She has POA for her mom and does a great job of caring for her.
Are you screwing PVC MPT (male pipe threads) into brass FPT (female pipe threads? I always use a rubber washer like you would for a garden hose. When fully seated you will rarely have a leak.
My ballast glue recipe is 50-50 white glue and water with a good splash of ISO 91%.
I don't use a sprayer for ballast. I use an empty glue bottle with the orange twist nozzle tip. Works just like an eye dropper.
Some say to not use off brand white glue and opt for the Elmer's brand.
I missed that memo and have always used the RiteAid store brand name which is less than half the price of the Elmer's.
I only used the WS scenery cement just because it came in a kit I got. Seems to be nearly the same as my homemade stuff. Having the sprayer certainly was necessary doing the ground cover work on the mountain. For big flat areas I just poured it out and spread it around with a regular 2" paint brush and sprinkled the cover right on it.

26° with wind chill at 15.
Looks like we got maybe an inch here.
No big deal for those of us who were raised in snow country.
It's the "other people" you have to watch for.
I really need some groceries but it's suppose to be snow changing to rain during the morning hours.
Not exactly conducive to walking so I'll probably just hang here all day.

Good morning gang!
Just looked out the front window. The little wishing well thing in the front yard it just the uprights and the top, the base is covered in snow. Cant open the front door, about a foot of snow against it and the rear slider. I'll have to wait til 1st light to really assess the extent of the snow so far, but it looks bad. Local weatherguy says it might lighten up at times, but it wont be out of here until dawn Sunday. We are in the 18-30 inch band on his map (smack dab in the middle!) so we are really in for it!! Oh joy, he just mentioned another storm out west that we may see Tuesday.....Oh Joy!
My biggest fear in the winter is the power going out. Eventually roads get cleared or it will warm up enough to melt some snow but if the power quits, I get worried. We always talk about getting a generator for power outages but so far, talk is all we've done. One of these days it's going to bite us in the rear end.......hard!
Hope all goes well for all the folks affected by this storm. Keep us posted and post photos if possible. I know how things get with a little less than two feet of snow and 25 MPH winds............what you're facing is unimaginable to me. Praying you all stay safe and warm.
Good morning. It's very cloudy and 26. We currently have about a foot of snow mixed with ice on the ground, with winds of about 15 mph, with gusts approaching 30. The good news is, with all the ice mixed with the snow, there won't be much drifting. The bad news is, with all the ice mixed with the snow, I'll need to use dynamite to clear the driveway.
Have some coffee:

Loosing power for extended periods really does suck. It happened to my last wife and I the first year we had our house in the western NC mountains circa '97. We lived off a gravel road on a mountain with no neighbors during the winter months. 27 trees came down and we lost power for about 4 (four) days. We were on well water so that meant the pumps didn't run either. Fortunately there was two 100 gal. bladder tanks so we had drinking/cooking water. Toilets were flushed by using snow we melted on the wood burning stove. Keeping the stove going was a full time job. It took me the better part of two days to get the trees out of the road down to the paved road. Another 2 days was spent shoveling 2 tire tracks before I could get a vehicle out.
it was another 2 weeks before the road cleared off enough so I get a vehicle back up to the driveway. It sure got old backpacking beer and groceries up that mountain!!! Amazing how quick I decided I could do without a sack of taters or a gallon of milk.
I missed a whole week of work that time. When I did make it back to work in town, FEMA and the NC nat. guard was all over the place. I kept wondering where was my help that whole time.

No new snow here at all. They've had plenty of time to prepare out there, much ado about something that happens every year! SHEESH!
Frau and Kinder are off to the Special Olympics ski invitational my son was invitationaled to at Mt Brighton. Getting ready for "the games" in Traverse next month! Most people do not realize that many of the fastest times recorded by S.O. competitors rival world record times set by "normal people". Those kids will blow your mind and take your heart!
Everybody has turned into goldfish! WHAT?!, this the first time for them swimming down this side of the tank??? It's called winter and it happens every year! Course when over half of the population ain't never seen snow before...
