Good morning. It's snowing and 27. Waiting to hear from my boss if work is closed today. If not, I have a 25 mile drive with a few thousand people that can't drive in snow...

Good morning gang!
Sitting here at work, waiting for the beginning of the end. Snow was supposed to start here by rush hour this afternoon. Now they are saying mid-afternoon. Total of 18-36 inches depending on the final track of the storm. The house is stocked with firewood and beer, once I get home, the bring it on!!

Okay, I just got word that work is closed for the day. If the power doesn't go out, I have a layout work day.

Good Morning All. Clear skies and 35 degrees here in North Central Texas this morning. Received 1/2" of rain yesterday morning. The system moved towards the Northeast and turned to snow in Arkansas, I guess that's what is going to hit the Mid-Atlantic/Northeastern states this afternoon and evening.
Chet, Curt, Garry, Dave, and Sherrel - Thanks for the comments. I intend to finish the scenery on this portion before I install the next section of benchwork, something I haven't done on any previously constructed section. It seems that once I get trains running on a section, I neglect scenery. It's sort of a New Years resolution.
Bob - I hope things continue to move forward with your MIL.
New Guy - I think that many of us are on our third, fourth or fifth versions of our layouts. This is my fourth and hopefully final version. Practice makes perfect. Is there any option of you sending the loco back to the manufacturer to repair?
Eric - Too bad about the drone. Also, living under the radar isn't necessarily bad, I choose to duck in and out. As I have said before, except for this darn computer, I try to remain "device-free".
Terry - Good luck if you have to go in. Here in my part of Texas, almost no one knows how to drive on the snow. Be safe and keep it warm.

I mentioned yesterday about building a "low-relief" structure to put against the backdrop in the section of railroad I am working on. It's almost finished. I need to add awnings over the unloading bays, but here is a picture of where it is now.

It's made from DPM wall components, painted and weathered; it's a fertilizer/feed distributor.

Wow! It must be later this morning than usual as it is light outside already. No wonder my wife is asking if I am OK, as I am usually out in the train shed by now.
Have a great day everyone.

Willie

G'day, trend setters! (I love that fishplate films guy, he's a HOOT!) C,c,cold! By gosh by golly! Not much here in the way of snow but sure and it's a 'titnipply' out there don't cha know! Made it thru the scrum and got the Kid to school with only one, 'one finger salute' from a little girl who almost t-boned ME with her souped up PRIUS! Such a little LADY! LOL! A junior DANIKA or some such, she was BOOKIN thru the school parking lot like it was empty, it was NOT! EXCUUuuuUSE MEEEEEE!!! Nice form on the salute though, she's had training AND practice!

LOL! Kids nowadays!

Good morning. 28 degrees to start off the day. Good luck to you guys having to put up with the incoming storm. At least you seem to be prepared. (Lotsa beer, good move Karl). Haven't heard from Garry. His part of the country looks like it is getting hit pretty good right now.

I will have to say that I am a bit amused at all of the news stories about this yet to appear storm. We and get two feet or more of snow at a time out here and there's never a mention of it. Snow is just a way of like out here, but I guess when you have so many people living in densely populated ares I can see where it can become quite a problem.

ROTSA RUCK YOU GUYS.

Willie - You'll fine that putting scenery in before moving on to another section of the build, that you can also plan ahead for what's to come on the next section. The scenery doesn't have to be complete, but just having a bit of ground cover and other bits of scenery will make it look so much better than a plywood jungle. Trees and other finishing details can be added later as the layout moves ahead. This is what I did as I moved around the room with my main line. I had basic scenery in and as the layout expanded, the basic scenery could be blended together into one continuous large scene. AlsoI found that by getting some basic scenery started as I moved around the room that it started to look like a real railroad and this inspired you to keep moving ahead. Finishing touches on the basic scenery will then be a bit easier. Good luck. I will be waiting for updates.

Good Morning, + 11 and cloudy. we have about 6 to 8 inches of snow on the ground, way below average for our vicinity...

Not much here in the way of snow but sure and it's a 'titnipply' out there don't cha know!
!

How much snow do you guys have, New Guy, Chet, Garry, Curt, Terry, Louis, and or anyone!!! Interested in getting some reports.

You east coasters, ready for the snowmageddon?

Willy, you did a nice job on your "low relief" structure! You really have those signs down pat!

40 with high winds and rain here. Today's high will be 40 so it's only going to get worse.
I'll probably be painting all day again.
Catch you all this evening.
E.

We probably have a good two feet of snow on the ground now. There was more, but with afternoon temps getting into the low 30's the snow had settles. The glaciers around my driveway from plowing have settles from about 5 feet to maybe three feet or less. We haven't had any large amounts of snow come down at one time lately, but overnight snow falls of 4 to 5 inches are very common here. You know how it is Dave. You really don't get excited about it, you just deal with it and move on. It's a way of life.

Karl - That what I keep handy all the time, but it sits outside in the weather under a tarp all winter.

Good morning, Happy Friday! Happy Snow day!

17° and still sunny this morning. Last forecast we had was that we would be in the coastal sleet band North of the big snow band, but around here it can snow on one side of the street, and rain on the other side of the street, so who knows. Gotta get the snow blower out of the shed, and test fire it before it's too late to do anything about it.

I think I found the problem with the Bowser A5 Shifter. It appears that it was never lubricated, and some paint leached into the bearings that make contact with the axles. now, all I have to do is reassemble the locomotive, and hope I didn't break something.

Chet
If I let mine sit out and get wet it might never start. With a starter / generator, if the belt gets wet the motor won't turn.

Karl - I have to keep mine right out front. My shop is a few hundred feet from the house and the shed that I usually park the lawn tractor in during the summer is out behind the house. Here's what happens if I don't plan ahead.

Snow shed.jpg Took a few hours to move 50 or so feet.

I did win the argument with my new printer last night. Being that the ink cartridges were not the correct ones for my old printer (which now resides in the trash bin) the printer was probably damaged and I picked up a new one yesterday. My wife keeps her bowling program on her laptop which usually isn't a problem as we have a wireless network at home. The printer installed easily on the desktop and on the laptop but I couldn't get the bowling program to print her weekly reports. I could print emails and such from the laptop, but not her reports. I was lucky to have got a hold of the software company which happens to be right here in Montana and after getting a hold of tech support was able to get things to work. I had completely removed the old Epson printer from the laptop, but in her bowling program, I found that the Epson was still designated as the primary printed. After assigning the new printer and using a large number of colorful works, we finally got her reports printed for tonight league bowling.

I might just be me, but I believe the near hysterical reporting of certain events, (recent stock market fluctuations and weather events for example), are designed to promote uncertainty and continuous watching. FWIW, based on my extremely flawed memory, this winter weather pattern reminds me of 1985 - 1986, in which we had an extremely mild December, and early January - washing my car on the driveway New Years day, for instance, - and sub zero temperatures in early February.

Joe - You can't fool mother nature. You never know what's going to happen. Our trucks go into the Boston area on a regular basis and they sure got hammered up there last year. Thay ran out of places to pile the snow and when it finally started to melt it was a real mess. People I work with out there sent me pictures with snow piled up to second story windows.

Karl, that Cub is a real beast in the small tractor category. Around here they are highly sought after for garden tractor pulling. When they get done with the engines, they run like a Swiss watch and put out a LOT more power than stock. Some sink a small fortune in them to go to weekly pulls where they risk destroying them. The only difference between the garden tractor pulls and the farm tractor pulls is the size of the tractors.

Hope everyone in the path of the big storm stays safe and don't suffer any power outages. The snow is bad enough but if you add ice and loss of electricity to the mix, then it gets much worse if you don't have a generator. Good luck and stay safe!

Another "STORM of the CENTURY"!!! 5th one in three years! LOL! As usual they are freaking out for pretty much no reason. That is one fine lilbeasty of a tractor there "chooch", VINTAGE! I picked up a lil Craftsman one stage thrower for the driveway and I got a sturdy 18 year old Son that shovels the sidewalk, we gotta 'tag team' the glacial mountain generously donated by the county plow at the end of the driveway but it gets moved.

On this Riv, I'm not sure I want to send it anywhere, it's just some tiny wires, maybe a watch repair place might be an option. Splicing on a new connector seems a lot simpler than 'surgery' no matter who does it. If I see what tools and techniques are used I may be able to do it myself next time.

We're in the big storm. It will not be too bad here as is the case farther east. We do have plenty of wet snow and more is coming down.

It is a good day for indoor stuff like model trains.

I really do like F-units .......
