Good Morning All. Partly cloudy and 33 degrees here today in North Central Texas. The forecast here has changed with highs expected to be around 50 degrees for the next four days, more normal than we've been having.
CS3 -
Man have I goofed up. Oh well I will have to pull this one together.
What are you talking about? Did I miss something?
Dave - Backdrop is looking good. I know you were eagerly waiting for its arrival.
Bob - You know that all of us are thinking of you and your family during these times.

Speaking of missing, where is Tony (Wombat457)? I haven't seen a post from him in almost two weeks.

I added some more ground cover yesterday, I'll try to remember to take a picture or two. Over the last two days I converted four more freight cars to metal wheels. Only 96 left to go. Broke one stirrup while handling and replaced it with an A-Line one. I think that this car is a Details West car and I had already replaced another one in 2013...I have a huge database of maintenance and inspection records. Who knows what today will bring. I have no particular plan in mind other than to run trains.

Have a nice day everyone.

Willie

Good morning, 19° and clear. It's been another uncomfortable night. I guess the shoulder doesn't like the cold weather.

Have to go back to the MIL's house, to meet the furnace repair guy. The unit's making hot water, but not circulating to the zones. So far nothing froze. Was not as cold last night so here's hoping.

You ever have that moment when you think out loud and well you just blurt out things? Anyways I had done up laying cork for everything. Well I'm out of it and I was finishing the loadout tracks. Needless to say I didn't so much goof up as I just had to find a way to make it work. Which I did. Cork is done now as I'm out of it. Took every bit of glue I had. And I'm pretty sure I'm not going to have nearly enough ballast to cover everything. But tomorrow is payday so I may have to remedy that as well.

Good morning all. 30 degrees and light snow.

Bob - I hope everything works out for you and your family. Dealing with a person who has dementia can be a full time job. My wife's cousin Built a wing on their house for her mother and she unfortunately didn't get much rest caring for her. It's a shame to see this happen.

Joe - Thanks for the info on the GG1/2, After doing some snooping it was used to clear snow from the tracks in the Wilmington, DE yard. Looking at the duct at the rear it probably did a pretty good job. Very interesting. Guess you do what you have to de to get the job done. The first photo is from April of 1979.

Chessie - Progress is progress and it looks like you're doing well. I don't know if there are any hobby shops in your area, but it is a major pain in the butt for me when I run out of supplies because my only resort is to order items on line. Sure slows things down for me.

I'm sure I can find something else to do on my layout. I'm finishing up my throws today as I only have three left to do anyways. I finally see the difference in my painted and unpainted sections of track. Definitely takes the toy look out of my code 100.

Hi guys! Just stopped in for a cuppa that fine joe! On a hunch I put the "BLI ATSF 2-10-2 #3886 Modernized" on the program track and did the ritual re-acquiring dance and apart from still going in reverse when it says forward and vice versa it runs and sounds great. If it's not TOO broke I ain't 'fixing' it!

My Fathers good long time friend, who is going nutso on the Manistee ore dock and attendant rail service it had that he is going to model is off to a good start, he's on a "ten year plan" with the ore dock model and is running nothing right now.(can't have THAT!) He kinda 'poo-pooed' on DCC at first until I put a throttle in his hand and assigned him two locos to 'race'. the transformation has a sight to see. I hooked him up with all my old snap track and a DC transformer so he can run his locos and some of his stock. I also sold him the Powercab I had at a good price (CHEAP!) to get him going with the DCC! He WILL be buying some DCC Loco's! Feels good to be a 'mentor' to one of my mentors! I had all my 'beginner' stuff in a box and was waiting for a 'worthy' to come along! Another fine facet of this hobby that I have been blessed to enjoy was 'turning him on' to DCC and practically giving it away is an EXCELLENT feeling, the exchange of money is merely for "form's" sake.

The 'new' track plan is taking a more solid form and I'm just waiting for the first week of Feb to order the riser kits from WS so I can begin laying the new lines. This next go round will be a scenery 'test bed'. Desert, forest and Mountain blending to farm land and small town. I want to try different things in the different areas for ground cover and trees. The transition between the types of terrain, that is something I am interested in exploring.

If I could figure out how to get the shell of this Riv 2-6-6-6 without destroying it so I could SEE what I'm dealing with as to these wires, that would be nice. BUTT all I've been able to find was a review of the same loco and that schmuck pushed the connector in with his THUMB and HIS runs! (mumble mumble mumble!)

Be safe out there. I'm going to stay face down on the layout and "RUN AWAY" when anybody mentions politics ever again, at the store , on the street, in the 'compuker', it does not matter! There IS no 'right answer' there anymore! (OY!whataHOTmess!) LOL!

NG: good to see you back. Wondered where you went off to.
E.

Threw it in neutral for a minute, chillin, mucking about with some loco action, contemplating the new track plan, 'playing' with what I've got so far. The 'pressure' is off now and I can relax and enjoy this wonderful amazing thing I have here. My carpenter is disappointed that I've become a 'scenery geek'! LOL! It was my intention all along to have good scenery, but my skills are NON existent! Gotta start somewhere! It's MY road and that's just the way it's going to be, scene after scene of 'off beat' things! Not modeling anything specific gives me some freedom but what I DO "model", I want to look GOOD! The Indian Railways train COVERED with people is on the menu along with a 'Rock Ridge' and whatever else comes to my fevered mind! Designing a waterfall and river system for the layout and 'brain sweating' the lines I want to see this summer. Getting excited to 'shake it on down into overdrive' again! Building it the first time was a LOT of fun and it just does not stop! WOO HOO!

That drone still function?

Good Morning, 5 above zero and light snow this morning.

New Guy, Good to hear your update!
Big E--Sounds like you are back to work!

Thanks for the comments on the backdrop!

Everyone have a Great Day

NFG, put that steam engine on the programming track, and check cv29. It should read 34, if it does, program 35 into cv29. That will change it to going forward when it says it is.

Excellent, thank you! When I start messing with cv's you will be my go-to guru! When I re-did it, it said it could not read cv's so I pressed enter and it read which decoder and the rest of the process went without a hitch.(NCE) I'm ok at the moment with it being contrary so I'll not be messing with it just yet but of course I will want it 'straight' eventually. It runs and makes the right sounds so thats good enough! LOL! I'm REALLY getting stoked on these potential inclines! I'm looking at about 40 feet of run to be able to get em up before I have to bring em back down on the other side. A double line going as straight as possible(4-6+% variable) and at least two curving grades of a shallower angle,(1 or 2% constant) the curves will allow more feet of road to get to the highest level. An 'interchange' maybe, on top of more of a big ridge or a 'hill mass' than a 'mountain', the 'mountain' will be coming out of the wall, kind of hard to describe. It'll probably look like butt, BUTT I have to "give it a go". I'll be building some temporary grades before I 'nail' anything down, I've got some s'ploring to do, see what "EYE" can and cannot do before I am locked into something. As much as possible, I want to be able to run trains while I'm dabbling in scenery.

I absolutely hate how fragile new locomotives are!!!! My gp40 took a tumble and yup busted up. The side kick with it. Guess what? The cheap one survived! With no damage!!!!

Think I'll go back to only Bachmann and blueboxes. At least they survive.

With great detail comes great fragility.

You can double-track your incline, and have one going up, and one going down. That will give you more room to run on the upper level.

4 lines on each side of the 'high ground' is what I've planned so far, I want to see em pass each other going up and down on the hills. The straight but variable grade 'double main' along the wall and two constant grade 'snakes' meeting at the top on at least a 4x6 'table land' nestled in the hills with a small industry and a bit of yard, maybe a small station...

I must be doing something right laying track. I've got a string of 28 of my best rollers behind the DD and I've been backing that train all over this layout thru multiple turnouts and s curves down to 15", the figure 8, etc. The combination of truck and body mount couplers is 'playing nice'. I had the sound off and forgot it was running, messing with the 2-10-2, I looked an it was up on line 4 somehow! No pile ups! WHEW! I need a good video camera.

Evening All,

Spent several hours working on the coal mine ladder and smokestack I got yesterday. I started on the mine track with an black acrylic wash. After that was dry I put down cinders on the track, then on the sides of the track I put down W/S Mine Run Coal. After I glued all that down I cleaned the track and sprinkled coal (actual) debris on that. I will post a picture through my phone since Photobucket is down for maintenance and I don't like typing longer messages on my phone.

NG- Glad to see you back here. I like the look of the Santa Fe oil tenders. I have a video of Santa Fe 2-10-4's that the Pennsy leased for the Sandusky coal drags.

I hope everybody has a good night.

Big E--Sounds like you are back to work!

Yep. Been helping a guy completely remodel his entire house top to bottom. All 4000 sq. ft. of it.
I've done all this kind of work before so it's just been a matter of getting used to it again.
I'm just happy to have something to do again - that actually pays!!
E.
