Good morning. 12 degrees to start off the day with a couple of inches of snow overnight. Guess we're supposed to go into the deep freeze this weekend.

Karl - Nice photo. I will totally agree with you about the Atlas units being bullet proof. I have my fleet of Alcos that Atlas brought out in sometime in the 80's and they are still operating flawlessly and run as good as anything on the market today. An empty room ????? More room for trains ????? laugh.gif

Terry - Good luck on your mystery package. Hopefully it's what you ordered.

Phil - I will be at Daytona come rain or shine.

Here's a makeshift service station that I threw together from scraps I had in may parts box. Needed something to fit into this odd shaped piece of real estate.

Good morning, Happy Friday! 37°, and overcast this morning, going to 45°. Weekend weather will be like a roller coaster, moderating rapidly then quickly cooling down.

47 and wet here this morning. Apparently it's been raining a little.
They are saying we'll be having scattered light rain through the morning.

Howdy

MILW 113 ... Nice photos of MILW F-units and L&N Alcos.

Chet ... I like the gas station. You included a rack for cans of motor oil. I remember them and the spout to pour oil from those cans.... I'll always recall adding oil to the engine with those spouts.

Chessie .... That is an impressive line up of locomotives.

Below is NP 1173, and 0-8-0, switching head-end cars for baggage, mail, and express at Union Station. The 0-8-0 is a Walthers Proto Heritage model.

Chet- Another great photo. Had a customer, PAT&AL'S Gulf ,that sat on a triangle corner. They were a nasty pair of s o b's.
Will darn sure try my best to meet up with you. And if things go well will also have Curt.

GARRY- Used to sell glass bottles with the 6 pack for oil and the "PLEWS" oil spouts.

Good morning all. Not much doing on the layout today. Doing some video watching on YouTube. Watching some on sandpatch on the former B&O line. Some really good stuff. I notice that the integrity of the individual roads were maintained through the Chessie years. B&O on sandpatch and C&O on the Allegheny line.

Are you talking about the "Big Show" coming up in 44 days?
I'd like to go find some place to go watch it.
E.

Garry - Like the little 0-8-0. I was tempted to get one but by the time I made up my mind, they were no longer available. Sweet looking little guy.

My NP 1173 was purchased on Ebay a few years ago. You might be able to find another one listed from time to time. ..... This one runs very smoothly and very quietly.... By the way, I had a 55 Chevy long ago, and I did add oil with a spout and those oil cans.

37 degrees here this morning -- low 50's for a high. Think the weather guessers have another front sweeping in over the weekend, but not much is expected from it. It sure will be nice to see things green up about. I just hope that the rain keeps coming.

Karl .. What show/layout is that? It looks to be a fairly busy one. I like those 24's .. they look good on that train.

David in CA .. Looks as if we each had the same amount of rainfall - very close.

Chet .. wonderful choice for that corner. Excellent scene. You guys are too modern for where I grew up. Bottles and cans of oil?
We hand pumped the oil from a big square tank into a can with a flexible spout and a trigger for adding oil to your car, but I remember the bottles with the screw on spout too.

Chessie .. with all those locos - where are you going to put the freight cars? The yard is full, lol.

Willie .. Goodness gracious .. that's some serious water .. holy cow!

Good morning, 29 and light snow in the Northland. Have been running by new locos, waiting for the new backdrop (patiently), also ordered several high quality box cars should be coming any day--Intermountain, Proto, Kadee.

Also a bunch of my first purchases are going on ebay one of these days, will be gradually upgrading my stuff. I don't like having a bunch of stuff laying around collecting dust. I don't have any children of my own so always thinking about the burden on whoever has to clean up my hobby when I am done.

Part of the reason I made the benchwork free standing and also not attaching anything to the walls.

Chet--nice service station. Very common size for the era!!

Garry, great shot--I love NP!!!

Above freezing and light rain is a perfect time to get the ice off the driveway, got er clean slow and steady and no heart attack!

I worry because my Uncle dropped dead in the driveway after clearing 2" of snow, he was only 38 and was in terrible shape( He hated being a cop after 16 years of it and had a BEYOND psycho wife, STRESSED out does not begin to cover it, poor guy, he was a GOOD Man!)...I try to take it easy.

Grandparents ran a gas station in the 30's thru the 40's. Still had a a green oil tank about 4x4 with a crank so you could fill a bottle. I used to play with it as a kid.
Did not have a flexible nozzle.

I don't have to worry about that much here. Given my high BP and sometimes shortness of breath I would certainly take it super easy.

I'm still coppin a twinge on the lower left from the hernia surgery and it will probably always be numb in one spot right there. They cut me on the vertical on the right side one and it healed lickety split, they cut me on the horizontal on the left side one and I don't recommend it! Good ole V.A. healthcare!

Good evening. It's raining, foggy, and 42.

The BLI diseasel arrived today in good shape, and runs very well. The sound files are a little shaky, but it runs great, and pulls good. Startup, idle, and shutdown sounds are good. Air horn seems to be the standard air horn selection for most "modern" diesels. Bell sound is good, clear, and crisp. Acceleration and cruising sounds are of the "pitch bent" variety, and I can tell it isn't the way it should be. I've operated 251 and 244 powered locomotives, and the sound ain't close.
Other than that, paint is clean and crisp, details are all there, nothing falling off, and nothing damaged in transit. In all, it is well worth what I paid for it.
Now that I've calmed down a bit, I'm trying to decide which BLI steam engine stays, and which go. Some have been very reliable, but some have been anything but. Currently, the only problem child is the 4-4-4-4, everything else is operating like it should, and the problems seem to be fixed...
Thoughts?

Good evening,

The day was very nice this morning and early afternoon but around 2:30 it started to get cloudy and cooled off. Now it's quite chilly.
Lets check Wunderground Weather:

Chet: I've always noted the detail you put into your scenes and the quality of painting the buildings get as well as decaling. The service station looks very nice as well and I noticed the curbing is even tapered leading to the pumps and then back to the normal height. very nice modeling!

What is the name of the gas company that used the dinosaur for it logo? I was thinking Esso but that's just a guess.

Garry: I not only remember the old oil spouts that we used to poke through the metal lid on the cardboard oil cans but still think I have a couple of them around? I also well remember the rectangular tanks, that some filling stations had with the filler neck and drain tube that swung to the side and hand crank pump to fill your container with whatever was in the tank below it.

Your shot and scene of the 0-8-0 is very nice and I also like the detail you put into your scenes.

David: I agree that I can only run 'em one at a time.
That's the way I have to do it on my layout as my track work is Class 1-2 at best but that the effect I'm after watching the cars bump and rock along.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I painted brown on a 16' section of benchwork in preparation for moving forward. The track is already laid and is in the operational testing stage. Another week or so and I will paint and ballast it. That's it for today.
Willie

Willie: Glad your your making progress on your layout.

David in CA .. Looks as if we each had the same amount of rainfall - very close.

Sherrel: Yes our rainfall amounts are fairly close.

Is this the "China Doll" you were waiting on?. I still have one of the Blueline RSD-15's from several years ago, seeing no-one seems to want it, thought I'd put an NCE decoder (hard wired) into it, use it as another tourist engine (SF pinstripe). The start-up, shut-down sounds on that aren't bad (to my uneducated, hearing aid ear anyway) but the underway sounds are virtually non existent. Horn is great and playable a bit.

As far as getting rid of stuff if it's OK and you don't have to. Act in haste (or frustration), regret at leisure?

The unintended Chineseum item is still enroute, supposed to be here Wednesday. If Thursday rolls around, and y'all haven't heard from me, it probably means the guy sent me an envelope of ricin, or something...

This RSD7/15 is one from Factory Direct Trains' super clearance sale, $129 for a brand-new sound-and -DCC equipped engine.
The one I got is a Penn Central unit, with the high short hood. Most of the RSD15/7's seem to have had low short hoods, which lended themselves to the nickname "Alligators".
I'll see if I can take a video tomorrow, and post it for y'all's amusement.
