Garry the only steam locomotives I can remember see running are the American Freedom Train in September 1976 less then a mile from where I lived and the Chessie Steam Special and both were either running very slow or on display at Martin Marietta in eastern Baltimore county. If I am not mistaken it was the same locomotive both times but in different colors. At least it looked the same to me.

The most impressive locomotive I ever saw were the GG1s pulling passenger cars east of Baltimore at 80 miles per hour I believe. At least I think that was the speed limit in that area. We use to play ball in a field next to the tracks and you could feel them coming and going.

Louis: I was assigned to the head end of the Freedom train in 1976, when it was enroute to APG. I boarded at Belmont, in Philadelphia and rode to Aberdeen Station. The AFT was pulled by the Reading T1 4-8-4, real number #2101. Back then, certain GG1 pulled passenger trains were allowed 100 mph, Metroliners 110mph while E60s were restricted to 90 MPH. (I think - relying on memory).

In 1978, (I think), I was living in an apartment complex adjacent to the B&O in Northern Delaware. One morning while walking the dog, I heard a strange whistle blowing for the crossings East of my location. It was the Chessie Steam Special also powered by a Reading T1, painted in the hideous Chessie yellow. What a cool - unexpected sight.

It's a beautiful Saturday, sunny but cold. We are going to bundle up and take a ride over to the coast, my wife wants to see the ocean.

Tomorrow is March 1, twenty days until "Spring" arrives. I wonder if the glacier on my front lawn will melt away by then?????

The Chessie paint looked better (less bad) on diesels, where it at least added to viisibility. It cost Chessie several thousand $$$ more per unit to paint the engines like that. Something I will never be able to unsee is the 2101 painted for Chessie. The Daylight engines being an exceptiuon, most steam looked better in basic black, with some color highlights.

I like the Chessie paint on the road switchers. It really wouldn't work on F units either. For that matter, the GG1, the E8, and passenger cars in Conrail Blue didn't work either, which is why the Conrail Es and the OCS consist were repainted in SR Pullman Green.

Now that I think of it I think it was the accident on a super bowl Sunday back in the 90s that reduced speeds to 80 miles per hour through my old neighborhood. My home would be the next stop after Aberdeen, I just missed seeing you!

I love the Chessie colors! Nothing looks better then a low hood Chessie GP, in my book at least.

A GG1 looks good in any color except neglect. Nearly broke my heart to see GG1 #4876 neglected and vandalized on a siding at the B&O Museum. If my family had not been with me it would have ruined my day.

I have never seen a Chessie F unit, I had thought they sold all the F units before painting any in Chessie colors.

Afternoon All,

Decided not to go to the club today because it has been raining all day and I don't run my trains when it is raining. In FL there is always the chance of lightning and I don't want to fry expensive electronics by a chance strike. I did fix the slight kink in my track. It turned out to be a matter of loosening the track and smoothing it out. I also got the number board mounted on the 0-8-0. Close up is fair but 6 inches away is much better. I have a P-Touch label maker that made the numbers small enough to work.

I think I am going to sell 3 locos thru a friend on Ebay to help defray the costs of the new L1. I rarely run these so no big deal. They are a older BLI K4s with QSI sound, a Spectrum 4-4-0 with a Micro Tsunami installed, and the Bachmann 2-6-0 with the Sound Value sound that I modified into a 0-6-0. All are weathered.

Tomorrow I think we are going to the local science center with our daughters family. If not I will start on one of my resin models.

Garry- Great scene.

Milw113- I believe that T1 photo is one of the builders photos. I have seen several from different angles on various sites.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Neither have I, except for hideous foobies by TYCO or LL, which is what inspired my comments. Same goes for the Walthers famous foobie Penn Central steam decal set, possibly inspired by the Chessie steam scheme. Can you imagine a K4 or M1 lettered for Penn Central, and what that would to to Pennsy purists?

I saw the L1 pre-order price at Trainworld this morning, and the thought occurred to me that , I don't need the L1 as much as I initially thought I did. After all, My steamers are now packed away, and I really don't plan on operating a steam era layout. However, the Bowser Baldwin RS12 should be in sometime this month. I'm definitely in for one of these.

Boris I love Chessie, Tyco and Life-Like, but even I don't like those ugly F units!

A K4,... Penn Central? To some that would be blasphemy! To even mention it might get us on some kind of black list.

Other then Christmas trains I am not a fan of steam, but even I would like to have a PRR K4 and a B&O EM-1

One more thing before I go to bed, maybe this will stir up some discussion.

How many K4s were painted in Tuscan red?

See ya in the morning, now I am off to get ready for bed.

Here is a Lionel K4

Evening All,

Just got done watching Lawrence of Arabia on TV.

WJLI26- Yeah the cost is pretty hefty.

Louis/Terry- Penn Central or Conrail-Yikes, I hope I don't have a seizure and bite my tongue off...LOL:rolleyes:

Louis- Actually there is a belief that there was one K4 that was painted in Tuscan Red for passenger service but there is no official record and photographs were B&W in the day.

I still hope everybody has a good night.

Curt I have read some say as many as 10 were Painted Tuscan Red, others say different numbers less then 10 and most say none were ever painted Tuscan Red. I have no idea, but I think they would look good in any scheme.

For the record; I don't have any kinds of lists, other then my wish list. I am a "to each his own" kind of guy, but I will pray for you guys.

Good save 113!
