Many of us use ground foam which is applied the same way you're doing with the dirt.

What is ground foam? I've never heard of that. Since my dirt is free except for a penny or two to bake and some glue to make it stick, the price is right.

I will do that as soon as I figure out what I want to do.
I'm kind of liking Curt's business with the portals and tunnels.
I won't buy anything for "real" ground cover until I can put my eyeballs on it - same with track ballast.
I could always get an air-brush and paint on some green if need be. :D

Eric: As Chet above is saying, nothing looks more like dirt than real, 'Dirt'. Get it when it's dry is best and they use something like a tea strainer to sift it and if you want super fine get an old pair of ladies nylons put some dirt in a depression and shake it over some news paper or directly on the layout for some really fine dirt. Works great to simulate areas like walking paths or where cars or trucks pulverize the dirt.

Some of the larger wire straining baskets can tend to be a bit coarse and some of the dirt can look a little to large in some areas, but don't discard it as it can always be used in other areas. It's just like when working with plaster and you have a bunch of small broken pieces. They can be stained to suit and used as trach side tallus near rocky hill sides.

You can get several sizes of mesh strainers and get a free supply of different size dirt along with different coloration if available in your area? Actually under door matts or in them if the jute type you can also get a lot of dirt out of them if dry of course.

So there's your solution as well as free too, sans the cost of the strainers.

Also if your not in an area were where much dirt is available, try going to a place that sell land scape materials as they most always have excess comming of the edges of piles they probably would give you?

If you have his number, just call him! I sure would.

That will be about the last thing. I don't like calling internet friends and possibly bothering them, just because they haven't posted in a while. If I hear anything that indicates something really serious, I'll pick up the phone.

My big yawns are telling me it's time for bed.

No Orioles to watch tonight, but the Nationals are on.

Busy day tomorrow with my grandsons off from school because of a professional day. I thought professionals should never miss a day? Oh well it's my gain to have my boys with me all day. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Have a great night everyone!

I just got an email from a friend that is working on the N&W 611, and he said work on the engine is nearly complete. Unveiling will be the end of next month, with a limited excursion schedule during June and July. It will pretty much stay in Virginia, with trips to Manassas and Lynchburg.

Good morning. 55*F, cloudy and wet in the "Free" State.

Terry, I hope your 'Plan B' for finding Bill will yield some kind of news.

Eric, don't feel bad - I've still got a whole layout that needs scenery coverage but don't have the time to do anything with it.

Didn't get any mrr stuff done yesterday, because I spent 2 hours updating my billing profiles for my annual Web hosting service and my home warranty. Seems neither one of them could recognize the userID and passwords I've been using for the past several years! So I had to wait for each of them to email me a new password, so I could logon and do what I originally was going to do: Change the number of the bill-to credit card, since my original one got compromised and subsequently cancelled. The home warranty service site was so screwed up it didn't even recognize my update. So I wound up calling their tech support, talking to an idiot machine that tries to pretend it's a woman, then waiting to talk to a living, breathing person. She finally answered, told me they were having "problems with their server" but confirmed that the CC# I had just entered was indeed the one they now have on file.

Maybe I'll get some mrr time tonight..?

Better run, gotta get ready for w**k!

Good morning, America! It's 52° in Clinton, IL and foggy, with a high of 76° predicted. Setting in the break room waiting to hear the POD (plan of the day) at the start of the shift. I'll get off work at 5:30, go home for the weekend and come back Monday evening on night shift for a week before the outage starts.

Sounds like a few have some trials that they are going through..............hope all works out for everyone. Still trying to catch up with everything. Be safe and have a good day.

Morning All,

Have some more chores to do today and I think MOH wants to go grocery shopping. Later tonight we are meeting my parents for supper at a Cajun place. I think the food is OK but MOH really likes it. I like Jambalaya a lot but the restaurant's tastes like it came out of the Zatarans box. MOH and I are driving to West Palm tomorrow to meet our son for a couple of hours and Sunday we continue to paint our daughters house. I will probably won't be back after today until Monday.

I hope to paint the tunnel area today and possibly attach the rock faces.

Sherrel- I wanted to break up the straight incline. To the right will be buildings that break it up and to the left will be the ME bridge I have to make. My club has a couple sections like this and when landscaped look great. Also the length of this section is 22 inches. I also need to be able to retrieve cars in the case of derailment.

Terry- I can't wait to see the loco actually steaming along.

Montanan- Snow? Is that normal for this time of year?

I hope everyone has a good day.

CURT - The snow, about 8 inches of it has all melted off as we were up into the 60's again yesterday, but I have seen snow up here every month of the year. It's fun trying to set off 4th of July fireworks for the kids in a snow storm. We're over a mile high and that contributes to the situation. The sun is up, no clouds and I did get some coffee.

Good morning folks.

It's sunny and nice for one more day and then back down to the 50's and rain. That's fine for a bit, we still need the rain.

I'm having a ball at work with my new found negotiating powers. The owners of the store are finally letting us wheel and deal to clear out the store. Clearly whatever hasn't sold in almost two months needs to be discounted more to move. Thank God they are listening to me on some of this stuff. I don't know that much about furniture sales yet but I do know retail. It's nice to have employers who actually listen to what a person has to say!

No modeling for me lately. It's that time of year where everything else in my life needs attention first.

Have a good day everyone.

Good morning, Happy Friday!

56° and overcast. It's been raining steadily all morning, but the forecast predicts showers after 3 PM. Really!

Did some yard work yesterday, and the arthritis is playing payback this morning.

Curt: Your comments to Sherrel answered my question concerning your plans for the bridge. I like how the project is evolving.

Chet: Your weather is nutz!

Ken: Any time one has to change information on a vendor site, it becomes an adventure.

My 2002 Monte is starting to grumble on start-up, displaying it's displeasure by idling roughly. It has 90k on the odometer, and probably needs new plugs etc.
although there are no fault codes - yet. I should probably get a truck, but I don't want a payment......and the sticker prices on new Silverados are shocking, not to mention a single cab, v8 with 6' bed is almost impossible to find here in NJ.

Wife's birthday is Sunday, need to go shopping.

I thought I had enough dirt made up yesterday to finish things off. Nope. Dirt batch #3 is baking as I type. I'm out of beach sand and it's something of a walk to go get some on my own. The heart-rate is pretty high today so I'll dare not risk a 5 mile walk. This last batch will likely be a little darker than the rest. Maybe not. I got deep this time and got into some of that famous GA red clay. Of course I'll need to stir it often otherwise I'll just bake myself a brick.

Morning all .. It's 52 degrees going to the mid 80's again with no, zero, zip clouds to be seen except for a few hot air balloons floating around.

Friday 04/17 0% / 0 in
Sunny. High near 85F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph.

Friday Night 04/17 0% / 0 in
Clear skies. Low 49F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph.

Thanks for the explanation, Curt. I would have done one thing a little different. I would have made the tunnels more like rock outcropping so as to look more like the short tunnels along the Colunbia River with the face more straight up and down. I am sure that however you complete the scene will look fine too! I have enjoyed seeing pics of your work.

Better get a few things done today. MOH is starting to think that I am fully recovered .. And her list is long!
