Curt - I believe that the rail to the right is a strip of concrete. Nice photo you posted.

Getting warm out here. Here's a photo of out little doxie cooling off. She likes to lay on the tile floor and let the breeze coming through the front door cool off her belly.

We call her the comfort queen.

Thank you from my heart Sir Sherrel!!!
Not many friends would do that - much less friends you've never met.

No problem ERIC. I had already figured that another 8 hours of driving on a coast to coast trip really wouldn't matter that much - and lots of pretty countryside from GA, TEN, KEN, and ILL to see. After all, You and I have been in the same leaky boat for quite a while - time for us to pull into a dock and have repairs done.

Good evening. It's mostly sunny and 94.
I have an update on the co-worker that had the heart attack on the job. It appears it was worse than they initially thought, in fact, he's still in the hospital today. He is supposed to get out "today"--sometime. We'll see if and when he is allowed to return to work. We're all hoping for the best.

Howdy ...

Curt, Dave B, and Chet (again) ... Thanks for commenting on my photo of the NP trains.

Sherrel ... I'm glad you are recovering enough to begin thinking about a long RV trip.

Here are work in progress smart phone photos for my bridge scene. I am still working mostly behind the bridges.

First photo shows how the new section of the layout (left) connects with the old section of the layout (right). At this location the two track main line has a third track. It has a fresh layer of ballast which needs to be cleaned up. You can see my narrow, wedge shaped warehouse on the upper level of the old part of the layout.

Second photo shows I am working on ground cover. The layer of yellow grass will have a layer of green grass on top of it. Eventually, I will have "water" under the bridge.

Third photo is from the normal viewing location in the aisle. The green grass was added over the yellow grass to the left. You can see my farm scene in the background which I did several months ago. I had to do that scene prior to making the bridges in order to reach it while I worked on it.

Fourth photo was taken by reaching over the bridges, and it is not a usually viewing location. All of the scenery to the right of the main line is what I am working on.

I still have a lot left to do.

WOW, GARRY You are making good progress. Very Nice!

TERRY - Sorry to hear of your co-worker's problems. Hope he recovers OK. I just learned that the guy, Ramon, who was in the shared room with me at Kaiser, who got out the day after me had a stroke after being home almost a week and is now in a coma at another Kaiser facility. His daughter said the outlook is not good for him - Age 62.

Good evening. 71°. Never got out of the 70s today. very refreshing.

Garry: Nice work. Big difference from the last photos I noticed. The blend in is coming together very nicely.

Chet: The doxie, is cute. Never met a dog I didn't like. :)

Sherrel: Sorry about your room mate, Ramon. Glad you are feeling better.

Garry - That is really some nice work. Quite impressive. Can't wait to see the finished scene.

Forget to post a rail photo. Guess CRS is getting worse.

Hmmm, Ken in MD. Hope the spouse is still doing well? Did they give her a little cup with a screen in the bottom to pee in? If she had one, it will come rolling out - unless it already did - and that, my friend, is a really strange feeling! Twice for me.

She appears to be doing fine now Sherrell, hasn't needed any pain meds since she left the hospital. I don't think the specimen cup had a screen on it, or if it did, she or somebody else would have noticed anything abnormal. As for that "strange feeling", I'm not really sure that applies since her [post-bladder] plumbing is different:rolleyes:...

Good afternoon everyone. Just a quick note to say hi while on vacation.
Garry - nice photos! Seeing things like that really inspire me. No way do I have the space that you have ( and many of the others on this forum) but I can make the most of the space I have.

will get back to regular posting next week.
Have a good day everyone.

1730 and it's hovering in the mid 90's, Tstorm moving in rapidly from the south.

TOOT....what kind of hacksaw blades do you have down under? I'm thinking they must be some pretty good ones....lol.;)

WILLIE...yeah, I've got cutting torch & a metal cutting band saw lined up....that should make it some what easier....

CHET...thanks.., the other real early piece I have is a Moss Bay 1882 50lb Central Pacific rail I found were somebody had taken a cattle guard apart.

SHERREL...I have none of that to cut the rail, it will get the hot wrench too start with....

Help me out here my learned friend, is it an optical illusion due to the magnification? Or is it that the magnification makes it's visible? Or some combination of both?
The long lens compresses the linear distance but not the vertical distance. So I guess that would be considered the magnification causing the effect.

Good evening.

Sherrel, Chet, Joe, and Johnny.... Thanks for commenting on my bridge project. Much work remains. I'm working on water below the bridge now.

Jerry ... I am a little slow welcoming you to the Coffee Shop. Evidently, you are a GN fan living in Oregon. I model CB&Q because that is what I saw growing up in Illinois, but I have lived in other states too. I also have GN, NP, ATSF, and other roads.

Cheers !

Good morning gents,
65 and clear here.... but that's not the reason for my post.
Tomorrow, Dad is taking me over to the Home Depot (next town east of here) to buy lumber!!!!!
I expect to have some semblance of a train table starting by day's end.
I have to be nice and not operate power tools on odd hours which is what I'm want to do.
Which reminds me I also have a batch of power tools coming in as well.
By this evening I'll probably be flush with all manner of coolness happening.
Already did a hook up to some of remote control turnouts Terry sent me..

Hey Terry, what the hell did you do to tear up so many of these things.? Seems like every one of them had a rail loosesd from the ties which I CA'd back in place. So far so good.
My Dad is constantly blown away with the things I do with this stuff. I mean Gees Dad, I have built model railroads for nearly all my life. I guess he never really paid attention.
That might figure, he never came to any of my baseball games when I was on the team in high school.

I hope to have a good day today!!!!
Wishing everyone else one as well.
E.

Oh.... a little help please!!!

This is the final design that I'm going with on my new layout.
Although the center 8' section shows 2' wide, I'm going with 3' instead.

I need help on where to start - like a starting track plan.
HELP!!!!!
This is one area where I just get all bumfuzzled.
All help would be appreciated. There are no rules. I'm not prototype anal or anything.
But I do want things to realistic.
Any and all suggestions and help are welcome.

Eric, I got those switches as part of a collection I purchased. They had already been removed from the layout.

No problem. I'm refurbishing them somewhat. They're sure worse for wear some of them.
But so far they all seem to be functional. A couple of them don't have the motors on them. I'm thinking about putting manual throws on them and see how I like them.

Since I'm building something substantially bigger this time. I want to cover the table deck with a "grass" mat so I don't waste so much time and money landscaping bare wood.
Could someone point me to buy some online? I'm sure MBK has it but their search "feature" is lacking. Plus I've been up a long time.
TIA

My latest build is the JC Landry Feed & Supply store.
Anyone who has lived in a rural environment knows the worth of a good local feed store!!
This is another Walthers. Kit # 933-3662 and it came with a skinnyed down light kit.

Good Morning All. It's a muggy 76° and overcast, 93% humidity which is unusually high for us when it's not raining. Only reached 90° yesterday, 10° below average. Nice! Worked on a few small home improvement projects yesterday since the yard was too wet to work in. It never ends! Never did venture to the garden as the dirt path was very muddy.
Ran trains and did some general clean-up in the train shed yesterday. Rehabbed some structures that I built 25+ years ago, and actually did a little more ground cover. I am in a good cycle with the overall train shed "clean-up". I clear out an area under the layout where various things have accumulated, then build some shelves underneath and repeat the process elsewhere. I'll finish that before I get all of the landscaping completed! LOL So far I haven't found any "forgotten" items!

Dave - You asked a week or so ago about the roof texture on a model that I didn't do. Well yesterday, I did one by the method that I explained to achieve similar results. I have a small office structure whose roof didn't seem to have made the trip from the now demolished train room to the new train shed, so I made one from sheet styrene. I spray painted it with Krylon flat black, sprinkled on some very fine beach sand while it was still wet, sprayed it black again and later gave it a shot of dull coat. Here's the result.

Chet - The rain that we received Sunday night (4"+) has pretty much eliminated our grass fire chances for the rest of the summer. No forests around here! It also thankfully, wiped out the late-hatched grasshopper generation, a similar rain in May wiped out the early hatch.
Garry - That is a really nice photo of the passenger train that you posted yesterday. Also, that scene with the bridges is really turning out nicely. I wish that I had the patience to do a scene from start to finish without getting sidetracked.
Eric - As Chet pointed out already, Gene made several posts regarding the Woodland Scenics lighting system. He seemed to like it a lot. I have chosen not to use it yet, as I have lots of power supplies and miniature bulbs to use first. OK, you're off to the races with that much track and roadbed, with the lumber coming. Be careful with the power tools, take your time. Sorry that I cannot comment or help regarding grass mats as I have never used them.
Sherrel - Boy are you correct regarding that strange feeling at the end! Been there recently.

Everybody have a great day.

Willie

I really liked that but not to be diswayed, I've started on another kit already.
From Kirbri kit #38749. A courthouse.
I'm likely to be done with it by this evening. Well maybe not since I have lumber on the way and power tools, I'd say maybe tomorrow evening I'll be done with that kit as well.

People tell me I should do this professionaly.
How does one go about that?
