Chet, that snow sure does look pretty...............THERE!!! Temperature is around 55 now but it's supposed to drop to around 20 and barely make it to freezing for a day or two, then warm up to the 50's again. The wife and I are loving it! The coldest I've ever been working was a couple of years ago building a natural gas fired power plant.

Here's a couple of pictures from that job and one of my boy Riley and I as we prefer the weather to be. The temps on that job were the coldest in years with quite a few records being broken. The stack that we were working on was 150 feet high at the top and the wind was howling most of the time with extreme wind chills. I never want to go through anything like that again!

The coldest that I've worked in, only because I checked the thermometer, is -36C, don't know what that makes in F...-33?

-36 C? Now yer talking real cold there, pard! I saw-65 F wind chill in Korea and IF you can work up some spit it POPS before it hits the ground! 15 minute guard rotations were the norm and once it stayed blow freezing or five days straight, the sun made no difference!

This was all in 'old school' Army gear! (wool and cotton mostly.) 'Gortex' and that fancy poly-propaline underware was just coming out then and just a top could fetch 50 dollars or more over there!

Somebody post the Monty Python skit again! ("YOU had a hole in the road!")

Some of these old TYCO rollers are going to need new trucks for sure if I ever want to run em, the metal wheels just fall right out when I turn em over! Those little 'V' shaped cuts are the culprit. Ok, who makes a decent and not too pricey truck! I know I'll have to spend but will I have to 'bite the bullet' and SPEND???

Just a glance around at em gave me a case of the EEEEK's! Feet up, cold cloth on the forehead, full blown VAPORS! "My, how could they"!

Men with nerves of steel (and lots of padding in case )

Completely frozen to the bone! You had so many clothes on that if you fell down, you had to roll over to someone to get help standing up! One of the worst parts of the extreme cold is the snot freezing in your mustache. I won more than one contest, especially when I had my "porn star" mustache!:rolleyes:

Ha, HAA! Those kind of things, like trying to eat, or going to the 'toidy'! We had to drink water 'by the numbers' to keep from getting dehydrated from just breathing! The DRY cold just sucks the water right outa your system!

It can be surprising how quickly you can dehydrate in the winter. The relative humidity is usually very low and just breathing can dry a person out very quickly. Going to the bathroom can be perplexing. Funny how things just disappear when touched by cold hands!:p

I've been using these Kadee #500 Bettendorf sprung trucks.
They already come with Kadee steel wheels.
However, these don't have coupler mounts so you'll either to convert to body mount couplers or find something similar with truck mounted couple.

Kadee makes Bettendorf trucks with the Talgo style hook ups w/ couplers... #502 ModelTrainStuff carries them: http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Kadee-HO-Bettendorf-Trucks-w-33-Back-Wheels-p/kad-502.htm

You are very much better off adding the coupler pockets to the bottom of the car ends as they are more prototypical and run much, much better!!!

Evening All,

Got the washing machine installed today. It was so nice to be able to do some laundry. Tomorrow is the school field trip.

Montanan- Great shot of all the ALCO's. You have too much snow for me. I can probably count the times in snow on one hand since I graduated from HS. Of course it has been in the high 80's here for awhile. The wire that you are modeling for power for the TT- Is it actually attached to the bridge? If so how do you keep it from knotting up when the bridge moves?

NateJ- Prayers for your grandfather.

WJLI26- I'm glad it appears that things are working out with your MIL.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Bob, I almost peed myself laughing!

GarryCBQ and PRR modeler: Thanks, his surgery went fine and he's home now, and true to his ornery ol' self ate a Big Mac and fries after the doctor told him "No sodium".

Excellent! I have a mix of body and coupler mount stock so this is great! Some things just can't be converted, some things you don't want to convert even if you could.

The main thing is putting Metal Wheels on em! I have neared the halfway mark on converting the entire fleet.

Good Morning All. Clear and 30 degrees here today. Only the second freeze of the season. It's going up to the upper 50's today and back into the 70's by Sunday. You all keep your snow and cold weather up north where it belongs. I hate bundling up just to go outside.
I feel like I should have gone out and bought a lottery ticket yesterday. I actually was able to drill 48 holes for grabirons with a single #80 drill bit without it breaking. Didn't lose a single grab either! Rant: Walthers sells these coil steel cars as RTR, but the modeler still has to drill holes for and install 24 grabirons. I guess they are still Ready to Run, just not USE. One down, three to go.
Today I intend to cut some more firewood. I've probably already got enough for the whole winter season but I still have 15 dead trees to eliminate. As some of you already know, I heat my house exclusively with a wood-burning stove. Other than oil/gasoline and blades for the chainsaw, I haven't spent a dime on heating for almost 35 years.
Well it's starting to get light outside, so it's off to the train shed for a few hours until it warms up a bit outdoors. I need the daylight so I can avoid all the possums, skunks and armadillos that inhabit the place at night. I also need to avoid this guy.

He's a lot bigger now than since I took this picture a few years back.

Looks almost big enough for lunch!

Good morning. 20 degrees with about 4 to 5 additional inches of snow last night.

Willie - You can send your buddy up here. I have a few snow piles he can move into.

Curt - The wire had a small piece of brass tubing soldered into the center of the overhead wire that just slips over the top of the bridge on the turntable. If I remember, I'll take a close up of it for you. Rather simple except for finding the right location to plant the power poles. Power for the motors that run the turntable has to come from somewhere. Check the photo below.

Bob - Thanks for the update on your bodily functions.

Got busy yesterday afternoon plowing out some of the neighbors. Sure wish the skid steer had a heater. Now that their driveway are clear, I'll have to plow mine again. By the time I was finished with everyone elses driveways, I was too cold to do mine. Guess I could always set my shorts on fire to keep warm.

Here's another shot of my Alcos getting ready to pick up their train in the yard. I think you can see the little piece of tubing sitting on top of the turntable bridge in this shot Curt.

Good morning ...

Willie ... We have a few rattle snakes here and also copperheads. .. We had a large pair of black snakes for a few years which were effective keeping away the bad ones, but the black snakes either died or moved away.

Chet... ANother grat photo ! ....... Perhaps you should attend Alco Anonymous meetings with MILW 113 .

Nate ... Glad your Grandpa's surgery went well.

NG .... I won't use truck mounted couplers. Backing up a long train through curves without derailing would be challenging.

Yeah, he was about 5' back then. I recovered a 7 1/2' skin this past spring that he shed. If he hasn't already, he will head for semi-hibernation today; most likely in my barn. OK though, as he does consume rats. I wish I'd taken a picture of him consuming one in the summer of 2014. While my wife has seen him from the kitchen window, if she knew that I got that close to take the picture, she would have left me by now...LOL It is non-venomous, locals call it a "chicken snake" or a "rat snake". A bite might still hurt!
Garry - He and others of his family keep the bad ones away here also.
