ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

For a lot of people a time period is not a necessity. Don't forget, it's your railroad. I chose 1957 because the mid 50's was the time I was growing up and I had the most vivid memories of the real railroads. I was out there in the thick of things riding in the cabs of locomotives with my relatives. 1957 in particular because models of '57 chevys are easy to find.

In the model railroad club my friends in Missouri are members of, they have regular open houses and actually change time periods. One day they may have up to date modern locomotives and equipment on the layout and for the next day, newer buildings are replaced with older buildings where needed. Old buildings aill work fine in a modern setting, but newer ones not in the transition era. Vehicles, some bill boards and other time defining items are all on a list they have and it doesn't take them much time at all to go from modern day railroading to a period set in the transition era.

These guts have their poop in a group.

6B B.C.? Cool! What do you model 2 billion years older than the Earth itself?

I didn't know you had buildings and stuff. Hell Man. Just set them out here and there and that alone will break up the monotony and provide a little scenery.
E

LOL! Gotta cover ALL the bases! I heard about the 4+ billion rocks, I thought they found rocks 6+ Billion years old? Oh well makes no diff to me. Ya, I got a kinda strange looking (60's?-ish) motel and an old west marshals office to go with the shoe factory, nothing goes with anything else, it's PERFECT! I'm keeping them on the shelf at the moment, the day I get those curves I'm tearing most of it up and beginning round 2! Oh, I'm getting some gooooood ideas and I'm going to try some more stuff before the final final final track goes down. I'm 'finta' get stoopid on the grades, no outrageous %, just BIG! I've been playing with the grade calculator and I've got the run to bring it up quite a bit and still keep it around 2%.

Good morning.34f and misty outside.

NG: The "wows" put a big smile on your face, don't they??!!? The first time one of my non-train buddies came over, he said he "was expecting a ping-pong table with trains on top, not an entire basement!" I love hearing the wows and holy sh*ts.

Sherrel, Garry, WJLI126: Thanks for the kind words!

Lynn: Trees are scratch-built. The pines are furnace filter skewers and the hardwoods are goldenrod.

Willie: I haven't noticed much of a dust problem. Probably could of hung up some poly. This part of the basement will get tongue and groove.80% of the ceiling is sheetrock. This area and the area over the yard have water pipes I wanted access to in emergencies.

Chet: I thought about a drop ceiling also. Could probably still do it. That'd give me access to the pipes ,too.

that's about it.

Terry in NW Wisconsin

The drop ceiling really came in handy when we were doing out remodeling projects. Pop out a few panels and all of the plumbing was easy to get at for the upstairs bathrooms. Sure glad we didn't sheetrock.

Greetings gentlemen!
Yip....yet another RSD-4/5 delivered today!

Good morning guys, we have 35 and clouds. It rained all day yesterday.

I did finish wiring up my lights on my backdrop framework and am ready to get it up off the ground and in place. I still have not purchased the scenes, am waiting to see how everything lines up before selecting the actual scenes, although I do have it narrowed down to a few.

Checkin here .. 53 with expected high of 67 today.
We actually had about 1/8 inch of rain last night .. Surprise, surprise!

Joe. Sorry to here about your MIL. Hope you can work out the details and get her closer to you.

Curt. Good luck on the washer. Spousal Unit bought one of those new kind of low energy/minimal water machines.
I don't like it .. If you forget something, you have to stop it- wait for the lid to unlock- before adding to or taking out.
Some way it "sences" the amount of water it needs, and you cannot open the lid after pushing the start button.

Good afternoon. It's sunny and 65. Looks like I'm going to be mowing the lawn tomorrow. In the middle of December.

Good Afternoon,

I figured I would post early since I will be tied up this evening.

Terry in Wisc- That valance will really make your excellent modeling pop.

Montanan- Incredible N scale layout. I toyed with the idea of N scale before I started my layout but I think I made the right decision with HO.

Milw113- Congrats. How many do you have now?

Sherrel- Our old machine was like that.

WJLI26- Sorry to hear about your MIL. I hope it all works out.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Curt - I also think HO was the right decision. The only reason I started into N scale was because I was stuck in an apartment with little or no room. I had an HO layout when I was a kid.

When I finally got settled up here in Montana, I expanded on the N scale layout but as I had mentioned, the locomotives were miserable at the time. Now that I am older and the old eyeballs aren't as good as they used to be, I really appreciate the decision to make the move to HO. A lot more selection of locomotives, building kits, vehicles, ease of kit bashing and scratchbuilding and the abundance of detail items available make it more fun to work on.

Guess it's time to get ready for Friday night bowling league. Time to head to town and have dinner before bowling. I will be watching on TapTalk.

This is a picture of Mill Street looking over the hand built turntable that was given to me.

This is my 6th RSD-4/5 buddy... Figured that I better start buying parts now! lol
One RSD-4/5 and one RS-3 will get shopped nose etc., a' la Delaware & Hudson and might possibly do the same again, but in the style of Milwaukee Roads RSC-25's (2.5's)...

I do like that pic with the turntable. I don't think I've seen it before.
A video of it in operation would be awesome!
I'm curious about them in general. Having never seen one in person - modelling or in the real world.
Does the turntable track need its own feeders?
And, I would imagine that would go for either DC or DCC.

Seems to me however, that if I had 1 line in and 10 or so coming out DCC would be easier to wire.
Hold that thought. All those outbound tracks would need feeders regardless.
Keeping track of which engine was on which line might be a different story.
I honestly know nothing about turntable operations but I could easily imagine an electrical engineer really having fun with one.

It hit 71° here today.
I've been about half burning up all day.
They are talking about 74 tomorrow and Sunday.
Just a week ago we had below freezing down into the 20s.
I haven't been expecting that swing at all.

Good evening Ballast Tampers & Spike Drivers,
Hi Flo & Francine, things seem busy again here at Jeffreys' Dinner. How about some coffee and a slice of Rubarb Pie!

The weather here is cold and rainy, at least last night and this morning then the Sun shown through the clouds in the afternoon for a bit then it started to got cloudy & cold. Lets check WW: Partly Cloudy 38.1 °F/ Feels Like 38 °F;
Winds are from the ENE at 2.7 mph;
The Barometer is at 29.95 in/Hg;
The Hum-i-dity is 95%!

Yesterday I was up and down from my roof repairing spots that look like they could be problems as I could hear rain dripping on the kitchen cabinet soffets and knew that need to be corrected. I also took another look at a problem area over my bedroom area that had been leaking and was very troublesome to get fixed. So after a bit of a challenge I did manage to get heavy Tarr paper fit in the right places and that stopped the leak as it rained several times after that and the ceiling stayed dry, thank God!

So today my legs sure feel all the climbing the ladder even though it's a one story ranch style home, so I'm just taking it easy
today.
I did do a bit more adjusting on the last curved switch as I again found a bit of problem and corrected that.

Good evening. Another trip to PA on tap for tomorrow. Seems that one week to the day after my MIL's insurance determined she's had enough rehab, the place where she is at, decides she can't stay, while she has quite a way to go before she is eligible for medicare, her resources are not sufficiently adequate.. Since we feel they didn't make any effort to rehabilitate her, we are going to retain an attorney. We have a meeting on Friday. They want to send her home, although her house is not ADA compliant, and she cannot walk. Such caring people.. Going to attempt to find her a place in NJ, closer to where we live, so we can drop in on her more frequently. It's been almost 18 years since my FIL passed, but he remains the account holder on numerous accounts. Had to order a half dozen death certificates, to correct the title before my wife can gain access.
Curt: Figures. if the cheap previously owned one works ok, and looks ok, you can tell the smug retailers to stick their overpriced new washers where the sun don't shine.

Hi Joe: Your MIL's situation sounds like there is a lack of caring. Be cautious on the the Atty you choose, my poor mother was dropped which broke her Left Arm. An Atty I knew, who was helping me to retain the property, told me that her arm being broken was actionable. I talked to several law firms who all handled elder abuse which I considered this to be, all told me they didn't handle that type of case. Of course I was asking them to handle it on a contingency basis and they all said they did handle that type of case. Many Atty's expect you to pay out of pocket and string the situation along to make more money. Be cautious.

Good Morning All. It's 41 degrees and clear here in north central TX this morning, going up to the upper 70's today. Expect some rain Saturday and Sunday. It figures as we are driving to Dallas for my granddaughter's first birthday party tomorrow. My daughter invited over 100 people! So far 57 have RSVP'd. My wife is baking a cake and then some...actually multiple cakes for that many people. She volunteered to make the cake before she knew how many were invited. She found out Tuesday!
I got on the roof yesterday to do my annual chimney sweep for my wood-burning stove, and to install the new rain-cap on the chimney. Getting on the roof has never been fun, even less so as I age. I might have to finally break down and buy a heat-pump for the house. Cutting and hauling wood, while good exercise is getting boring after 35 years. I heat with nothing but wood.

A parting picture from the "plywood central".

It's a shame because there are 20 figures inside but you can only see a few of them even when the interior light is on. I may re-orient it or move it.
Willie

Say Willie: Cutting wood does keep you in shape but it also a lot of work. I've got to get my chain saw going again as there are a number of pieces of tree limbs that have broke off and will provide some good Oak to burn.

Sounds like your wife may have a bit more work cut out for her than she planned on?

Your Plywood Central store looks good and seems to be a busy place. How come so many people inside?

Say Joe: Yes, happy Friday for sure!

Hi David: Glad to hear your able to be doing a fair amount and that your is healing so well.

Hi, all. Rain today.

I use KD couplers and Intermountain wheelsets. Nothing else. I have rebuilt a lot of Tyco, Life Like, Bachman etc cars. I cut off the talgo truck mounted couplers, then body mount KD's. Some needed over or under set couplers or a # 5 with a styrene shim added to the coupler box. Since my layout is ops-based ,I don't worry much about highly detailed rolling stock. It's a quick and cheap way to add cars. Once they get a little weathering they'll look fine.

Started playing around with the long-planned valance build. I'd like to get a shadow box look.
Here's whats up so far:

That's all for now!
Terry in NW Wisconsin

I also use Kadee #5 couplers and might try some of the smaller size ones too. I don't remember their #. They have always worked good for me. I've also used Kadee 33" & 36" wheel sets on most all of my cars that are from MDC/Roundhouse as they fit perfectly by just by swapping them out, as well as changing over to the narrower code 88 Ribbed back wheels for my earlier equipment. I like the Kadee wheel sets but have to admit that the newest car I bought from Roundhouse - now owned by Athearn is by far one of the freest rolling cars I have. The side frames are a molded plastic like Delrin.

Double post. That's a first!! LOL!! sorry.
You can delete those easily At the bottom of the post there should be an Edit button to click on and just Check the box
