One year I decided to really deck the house out with the outdoor lights. Looked real good, then I got the electric bill. Now, I only put up a 3 foot tall tree on a table in front of the window with one string of lights on it.

Garry- Great job on back drops. One of the prototype modeling events I have attended had a presenter showing the construction of his layout (on the lines of D&J RR). He had a photo backdrop made that cost him thousands. MOH is pretty supportive, but....

Curt .... I looked at the photographic backdrops that were commercially available. .... It would have been too costly for the 140' I needed. .... So I combined different types of backdrops, and some are photographic. Most of mine is the Faller backdrop which has the sky the way I like it. I sued various techniques to blend it al together.

Lloyd.... .. You are building a great layout.

My bridge scene is mostly sky....

Zephyronbridgewb1_zpsfb233726.jpg

This doodlebug is running very close to the backdrop. You can see a variety of materials in the backdrop including a photo of a white building and other items glued to the backdrop . The yellow foliage is Woodland Scenics material glued to the backdrop. Acrylic painted was used to blend it all together.

Moving along the branchlike, the doodlebug passes a house I cut from a calendar.

...Ken in Md - Your backdrops look very good as well. Reminds me of the ones on Tom Johnson's layout. He is known as "INRAIL" over on the MRH forum. ...

Thanks Willie! I've seen Tom's spectacular layout and gotten some of my backdrop ideas from there.

Curt - glad to hear your signal project is moving along, looking forward to seeing the photos when done.

B-Bob, good to see you and thanks for the comment about my slag pit photo. That's actually a Komatsu loader from a Kibri kit. I'd love to have one of the Norscot Cat models but they're ~20 years later than my modeling era. Guess you'll be headed back to the internet "wilderness" by the time I get this posted...

House has gotten really quiet again. Youngest daughter flew back to Florida, and my 21yr-old drove back to Ohio. SWMBO spent most of the afternoon visiting with a friend, so I had time to finish my work on the slag cars. I got the 6 new ones painted and weathered to the point where they look similar to the originals, so if I co-mingle the two sets you can't really tell the difference:

SlagPotsAllInARow.jpg

Another thing I did to all 12 of them was to paint the white lime powder coating to the inner surfaces of the pots. [The lime serves a purpose similar to teflon in a frying pan - it keeps the hot slag from sticking to the pot.] Painting the insides of the bowls was easy, but simulating the "overspray" was a PITA - I needed to use my airbrush for that, spent at least an hour just getting that set up, then cleaned-up and packed away. Probably seems counter-intuitive, but mill workers don't worry about neatness when they're applying this stuff - these are not passenger cars LOL.

SlagPotsLimeOverspray.jpg

Only remaining task on this project is to paint the removable slag loads.

Hammer back at it E!

I got NO problems besides major home appliances that pick THE worst time to take leave of this world and THIS little beauty!
DSCF4442.jpgHard to see but the insulation did not go all the way into the connector like the one they sent me does!
DSCF4443.jpgI am at a complete loss as to how to replace this wire assembly with the one from Hornby, which I must add they sent free after only one E-mail explaining the problem. Excellent customer service. I just don't know how to do the work and don't have the soldering skill even if I did know what to do! It's only 8 tiny wires, not the motor or any internal connection problems, not a quonky decoder, nothing like that, just a simple tender connection.

Good evening gang!

Been cleaning gutters and cutting aluminum track for the drop ceiling all day, and got almost all the ceiling replaced on the train side of the basement. IF I ever do this again, mental note. cover the layout with plastic. The tailings from the new tiles looks like a fine dusting of snow on the little town. Thankfully, the computer cleaning attachment for the shop vac works well for "snow removal".

E Back in the hopsickle again eh? Here's to sending you positive vibes for a quick healing event. You don't belong there son, the place is full of sick people!

KenL, about the avatar. I didn't have a falling out per se with any one particular person at Klambake. Its more of a conflict of interest. They have an interest in my money. Judging from all the "offers" I get in the mail. Special renewal rates (the same rate as the cards that fall out of the magazine each month). What's so special ? Oh , and the rate gets even better (higher) when I combine that with Video Plus! Oh really. This for a guy who , with the exception of Nascar, watched 5-6 hours of T.V/Video a week. And this total includes 30 minutes a day M-F of the local news. No, not me. Then there is the magazine itself. Same old same old newbie articles (nothing wrong with being a newbie) then the dumb as bricks article last month on the Scotchlock connectors. Ok, I get it, if you follow the article to a "T", you might be OK. But you know there is gonna be some "Bubba" modeler that is gonna run out to the shed and grab a handful and use em just because of that article.. Never mind her never read it, Oh and RMC has been kicking their butts the last few months, in pages per month, content and at a lower subscription price. Guess who will be getting my money? Besides, am I the only one who would like to smack Cody Grivno in the chops? :rolleyes:He grates on me like Gilbert Godfried!!

Garry. Your awesome bridge scene reminds me of one a friend of mine built on a 2x8 ft module. His photo backdrop was take at the prototype location on the B&O, blown up and installed on the module.

Billsbridge1.jpgBillsbridge2.jpgWMatMagnolia.jpg

And calendars are fair game, just ripe with photos for the picking!

Louis. When I bring your stuff down, am I just going to have to follow the glow of Christmas lights to your house??

Well, tomorrow is another work day, catch y'all then!

LOL! Y'all are killin me with the scenery and I'm a chompin at the bit to get that part going but I must wait, the table has not shown me all the details of the layout yet. It's already shown me where I need more track along the back wall and on one end, the middle is still a bit hazy, a trestle just appeared leading to a small ore dock but that is only a quarter of the blank area on the map!

LOL! What's wrong with Cody that a slight drinking problem would not fix? He's ok if a little stiff. LMBO! his modeling skills are good enough to show off his projects and promote products but not so intimidatingly good to where he makes others not want to even try, he's supposed to make you say "I can do that too, maybe better", and he gets paid to do what we pay to do!

Those slag cars are absolutely outa sight! Amazing attention to detail is one thing but the execution is quite another entirely, WELL DONE SIR! Now the glowing slag dump to model, complete with steaming slag! How hard can it be? (off hand comment leads to fifteen photos of said scenery on various layouts, complete with steaming slag!) LOL! That always happens on here when someone goes "well how about a such and such" and examples POUR in! One of the best of the many excellent features of the forum is the deluge of examples to choose from!

Made it to the motel and getting settled in. Rained pretty hard most of the way with fairly strong wind........oh well, it could be snow or ice!

Ken in MD, if I had looked a little longer at your picture, I would have noticed the black strip down the hood and across the back end of the loader. I shouldn't have missed that.........after all, I worked for Komatsu Mining Systems for 12 years! Really nice job on the slang pots, too!

You're also right about the internet wilderness. I've been knocked off twice so far!

Evenin' people....

I have been a bit busy over the last several days what with Birthday Party and Thanksgiving, and all kinds of other interruptions. I did, However get a few minutes to get some items accomplished on the layout.

This is last week... Now you see 'em...

Milo%20Mills37w_zpskelo3uvp.png

Now you don't (the PC ties...):

Milo%20Mills39w_zps1mnmvgiz.png

There are also 4 power feed drops in that trackage, BTW...... Next, to finish the scenery around the tracks. At least the basic stuff. Then I will ballast the tracks and get to work on the major bridge project over the gorge that will connect to this track.

Hope you are all having a great evening. (My prayers continue for Eric!)

Good evening .. it's 47 and clear. We had several rain showers move thru the area today. I do not know how much fell because I failed to place my scientific rain gauge bucket on the patio before it started. I think that it may be the first time I can remember this year that I have seen water running down the street in any quantity.

LOUIS = I failed Christmas lights! With my puffed out hernia and the rain ... just did not feel up to trying to pull them out this weekend. Like a dummy - I should have had them out when it was in the mid 70's earlier in the week.

KARL Those three photos of that bridge there are just outta this world real looking.

Should'a shared some of last Saturday's weather activity with you then. When I was driving to the club about 8:30am on the highway, could see dark clouds with rain falling in several places. Didn't get any at home (was told later) except for a big flash and bang nearby, and none at the club. One of the guys about mid morning said he'd heard on the radio that a couple of Brisbane's south side suburbs got 6" in a hour, flash flooding everywhere. Further west got hail that turned the ground into a white carpet.

Good evening fellow and lady, 'Rail Workers & Switch Tenders',

Hello Flo & Francine, Jeffreys' Dinner sure looks like a busy place lately, it's the warm atmosphere and the great service plus it's fairly warm and cozy.

Humidity 93%
Rainfall 0.00 in
Snow Depth Not available.

I forgot to mention that from the 25th.to the 26th I got 2.10 inches of rain then it turned fairly cold, enough
that I've had a fire going all the time to help take the chill off a bit. I'm still burning Oak wood I received from last winter and still have about a 1/3 of a Cord left but I'm trying to take it easy to make it stretch till I get my tractor fixed so I can cut down some dead oaks for fire wood that are fairly close bye.

I also got my property taxes paid for the 1st. half and then at the beginning of Jan I have my car registration due plus DMV wants it smoged again even though I had it smoged last year!

I've got a 1.5 Lb., loaf of White bread in the bread machine and it's rising very nicely, I just checked and it has risen to about 9" in height and looks like it will turn out very good.

Unfortunately I have nothing new to report on my layout as it seems the day goes by and I don't get out there as I plan to for one reason or another. Arr! I've had a couple of lights on since this afternoon so I'm going out and at least run some trains tonight.

Thanks Willie! I've seen Tom's spectacular layout and gotten some of my backdrop ideas from there.

Ken: Very impressive, both the Steel Mill as well as the Slag Cars and their loads. I was wondering why the Slag Pots were all so white looking? I never realized that was done but I guess it acts as an insulation too? I'll bet in that enviorment it's easy to light a cigrette on the end of a long rod?

Say Bruse: If it's just the bare wires your concerned about most electronic stores sell a black liquid insulating type of stuff you can paint on to cover the bare wires.

Garry: Your Red & Yellow cab Doodle Bug is very interesting, do I remember you saying that was a Bachmann? It's probably too modern for my era?

I thought it didn't rain in California.

Say D&J: Only if you live in the right spot/s!

Good morning. Calm and hovering just above the freezing mark in central MD.

NP2626 and Ken of D&J - glad you could join us!

Karl - From your avatar, it looks like you've had quite the falling-out with the Kalmbach folks..?

Curt - best of luck on those remaining signals.

I'm seeing a lot of great-looking backdrops here from Terry, Chet, Karl, and Garry. Mine are home-grown, nothing spectacular; mainly just tree lines, since the region I model is the Cleveland metro [i.e. mostly flat]. Here are a few shots from my previous layout:

Don't have any finished scenes on my current pike, but here's one with a backdrop:

FinishedRoadSouthBklyn.jpg

Spent most of Saturday painting the slag cars. Almost finished, just need to simulate the lime in the empty pots. Gotta get ready for Mass now, then take Daughter #3 to the airport. Have a good 'un!

Say Ken: You did a great job spraying the lime on the pots as well as the over spray from the workes!
Look very realistic.

Time to call it a night.

Hope all have a good day tomorrow.
I think my bread is done, time for a sandwich!

Good Morning Everybody!

34 with 71% humidity in southeast Baltimore. At least its warm enough that the ice on my wife's windshield wiped of easily with some washer fluid and an old towel.

Wow this place has been busy, very cool!

I'll throw my 2 cents into some of these discussions. At least until my grandson wakes up. Pajama day at school for my little man. If he brings in a dollar that is. What will his school think of next to raise money? It's a great school and it's free. I can't imagine how much private schools cost these days. I spent $11000 per year on my kids last tuition bill and that was... holy mackerel Andy, has it been that long? I'm getting old fast!

But as the grease man use to say "I'm still perking and working and having a ball"!

ok I need a refill on this coffee.

I'll be back!

Good morning guys. 30 degrees here in King George, VA. To cold to ride the Harley to work. 35 miles is a little to far, plus I have to go to a couple different offices today which make it a hassle to don and doff the riding gear.
The long weekend was great.

David in CA you do a great job of replying to everyone in one post. Many times when I try to do that I screw something up, the post don't come out right or I lose everything before I post it! Well done young man! These young techy people ;)

Good afternoon all. Taking the day off from working on the layout.

Talking about backdrops, when I started my layout, I knew what I wanted for my backdrop, I wanted all 4 seasons and they had to blend together. I spend so many hours on the net looking for high resolution panoramic pictures, but never found what I was exactly looking for.

I decided to take my own pictures since I thought I was good with Photoshop, but it became so time consuming that I dropped that idea. Since I need about 170' of backdrop, I looked up those that sell them and found out that it would cost an arm an a leg for what I wanted.

I finally found someone who was willing to take the time to match everything to what I needed and that I would only buy the paper print, no glue or self adhesive. The final cost for 170' would be equivalent to 4 locomotives, but all worth it, because I'm no artist, save on paint, work and probably having to redo stuff.

All I had to do is send him a picture of what I needed.

View attachment 59490

I should be getting my first 210" this week

Ken, I built a valance which solves the problem of not having to match the backdrop to the blue wall.

Now I'm going to watch some real football, the CFL Grey Cup........lol
Later all.

Lloyd I like it! The pelmet looks fantastic!

I watched a few of those Grey Cups myself, back when Baltimore had a CFL team. I would not call it "real" football but it is defiantly real good football and fun to watch! I hope you enjoyed the game.

A very professional finishing touch, we would call that a "Pelmet".

Is that a real thing? I never know with you, but my spell checker accepted it!

Is that a real thing? I never know with you, but my spell checker accepted it!

Generally the name for a cover over the tops of window and maybe, sliding glass doors to hide the curtain and/or drape's tracks from view, although not as much in favor now. Mostly decorative rods and curtain rings these days. That "point of sale" thing, easily installed by an average handyman. I prefer a pelmet. This one's built in up to the ceiling, over the sliding door in the small back bed/computer room. 8' ceiling.

LED lights my friend, LEDs. I have all LED lights now with the exception of 2 sets of C9 bulbs and I can't bring myself to replace those. They are the lights I remember as a kid, I don't care what they cost me.

...and THIS little beauty!

Bruce from looking at the new harness it looks like bare wire on one end. If that is the case and you have space to hide the wire just cut off the connector on the bad harness and carefully match the wires and splice them together. Twist the wires together and wrap them in a little electrical tape. Cut the wires in different lengths so that all the splices are not in one place, that will make it less bulky.

Call it a temporary fix until you are ready to solder it in correctly. You are not doing a wiring harness on an over the road truck. If it fails and it should not if you do it carefully, you won't have to go far to tow it back.

Louis. When I bring your stuff down, am I just going to have to follow the glow of Christmas lights to your house??

Well, tomorrow is another work day, catch y'all then!

Karl you hit the nail on the head with Scotchlok connectors; IF and that is a big if, you match the application perfectly and install them perfectly they will work, but it you use the wrong size, wrong wire or improperly install them, they will get you sooner or later. If use them indoors with no movement, low humidity and install them perfectly they will work fine.

My Christmas lights are not too bright because I refuse to use white lights, multi-colors for me. I will warn you the flashing displays could trigger seizures, but the are automatically controlled and only come on 12 hours a day. You will know you are in the right place when you see the Polar Express flag and 3 big Lionel Christmas Balls hanging from the porch under the icicle lights.

Please let me know when you are coming, I'd like to at least say hello, shake your hand and say thank you. I promise I won't make you come in and eat or drink. :) but you are more than welcome!!!

Ok my little man is not waking up so I better roust his ass out of bed!

I'll be back (I like saying that :) )
