Good afternoon.

Sherrel, Louis and Willie, thanks for the comment on the 300 game. In the ninth frame it got so quiet in the bowling alley you could hear a pin drop until the last strike. Then all hell broke loose. I got one around 20 years ago but it is nice to know that you can still do it.

Terry - I have seen videos of the Union Pacific Challenger pulling a freight train with modern equipment behind it. No firing squad for you.

I did get the two little switchers lettered finally, a simple job, but my decals are probably over 25 years old and a bit fragile. I would have liked to have spelled out the full name but with the old decals this was a bit easier.

The little 45 tonner has the nickname od Buckshot and got the 00 number.

Number 95 also was painted but unlettered.

Did a few minor scenery projects and then spent some time switching. Nothing like running trains. That's what the hobby is all about.

Hey Terry, do ya think he would paint my backdrops if I let him run trains? 8-)

The amount of endeavour required in the painting your backdrop Ken sort of reminds me of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and if you offer the payment you are proposing to Terry's artist contact, you might get the same reply as LdeV gave to Pope SixtusIV when he would ask how long more it would take. That could leave you at sixes and sevens.

Today I went to our model railroad club, and ran some trains while I cleaned the place up. Next weekend is our open house, and I didn't want the place looking like a pack of wild dogs lived there. While there, I did something that will cause the Prototype People to have a coronary:

LOL! That is one FINE looking loco there! Those BLI's are PULLERS! My 2-8-2 pulls a dozen up the grade at slow speed like it's walkin down the street, no problem!

I've been playing all kinds of games on the layout today. Put one on each line all facing the same way, get em going at 20 or 30 and play "line switch"! Turn one the other way and things really get wild! Put em all same facing at 5-10 and try to conduct some switching using the mains that are temporarily free before the next inbound creeps in and ruins someone's day! "CAN he make it?" I did. Of course the switcher was not going yard speed, that's "The SHACK's" yard! LOL!

Good evening everybody.

Are you still eating leftovers from Thanksgiving? ... We still have more than enough here.

Be back later.

Ken
Backdrops are a " to each his own" kind of thing. Some are very detailed, some not, but the point is to suggest that there is some life beyond the edge of the layout, or to at least blur the line somewhat.

I've used them all at one point. Drawn on, hand painted, (I wish I could find more to show you)

commercial photo backdrops (OK, but isn't that the same scene a buddy has?) but by far my favorite is panoramic photos printed on cardstock and mounted to the backdrop material.

Original, realistic and customizable . All you need is a computer, color printer, and photo editing software.. Oh yeah, and a bit of patience!

Howdy .

Chet ... Your photos are excellent. I like the small GE switchers.

Terry ,,,, I like the video. A modern train behind a Santa Fe steam loco is impressive.

Karl ..... Your photos look outstanding. The background hills look real.

Ken D&J .... Regarding backdrops. ..........

Here is one of my backups. I started with a Faller European backdrop because I like the clouds on them. I cut out pictures of buildings, trees, and so on from calendars and magazines which I glued onto the backdrops... The building on the hill and the tall pine tree to the right of it were cut outs. I sometimes paint items onto the backdrops. I also sometimes glue scenery products onto the backdrops.

Here is a commercial backdrop with the scenery curving up to it at the bottom.

In my city scene, I have flat building fronts next to the track in front of the backdrop.

Good evening but late again, Rail Layers & Spike Drivers,

Hi Flo & Franine, It's great you ladies have Jeffreys' Dinner open so late! Coffee for me and a nice size slice of Pumpkin Pie is you still have any left? Oh, great!

It's been fairly cold at about 38* and raining, that could turn into snow around here!

My male cat Buffy has been out all afternoon and is still out at 10:50 Pm. I hope I can find him to get him inside?

Chessie that is a great video, thanks for reposting, I must have missed it the first time around.

David good to hear you enjoyed your thanksgiving!

Have a great day Everybody!

Say Louis: Thanks, it was enjoyable, you sure put on quite a feed yourself. I'm glad you had a good thanks giving too!

So, this is my first post here! I was buddies with Running Bear at the MR Forums. He was a great guy and very fair in his dealings with others. Since I am relatively new to this forum, did Running Bear also partake in this forum, also?

It sort of seems that there is a "Shot Gun Blast" of topics being discussed here. I'll let those with seniority direct anything further!

Hi NP2626: It's nice to know you knew Jeffrey too, he was quite a guy and fellow modeler. I met him several years prior to his passing which happened in the early morning of my Birthday two years ago as I recall, Dec. 15 th., which is coming up shortly. He was an inspiration to many and passed away way too soon at only 52 as I recall!

You'll find the forums here to be very enjoyable and most everyone is very helpful should you have any questions. Glad to see you found the coffee shop that was named after Jeffrey Running Bear, Jeffreys' Dinner or Running Bears' Dinner. They seem to have a hard time knowing where to place the (') which belongs after the (s') to show ownership whereas placing it before the ('s) makes it plural. Like I just pointed in a prior post, "I've never seen any running Bear's at Jeffrey Running Bears' Dinner or Jeffreys' Dinner.

Tell us more about what your thinking of modeling and what gauge?

See you here at the coffee shop.

Good evening everybody.

Are you still eating leftovers from Thanksgiving? ... We still have more than enough here.

Be back later.

Say Garry: That was quite a display of background background scenery as well as how you enhanced it to which is rather unique and adds depth too! Very nice!

Good morning. Calm and hovering just above the freezing mark in central MD.

NP2626 and Ken of D&J - glad you could join us!

Karl - From your avatar, it looks like you've had quite the falling-out with the Kalmbach folks..?

Curt - best of luck on those remaining signals.

I'm seeing a lot of great-looking backdrops here from Terry, Chet, Karl, and Garry. Mine are home-grown, nothing spectacular; mainly just tree lines, since the region I model is the Cleveland metro [i.e. mostly flat]. Here are a few shots from my previous layout:

Don't have any finished scenes on my current pike, but here's one with a backdrop:

Spent most of Saturday painting the slag cars. Almost finished, just need to simulate the lime in the empty pots. Gotta get ready for Mass now, then take Daughter #3 to the airport. Have a good 'un!

36 out there and the coffee smells good in here!

WOW is all you can say about those backdrops! Very good guys, makes me want to start the modeling phase even more but I must slow down on that and PLAN! REALLY liking the four line main design I've got going and I will for sure be getting some more 15"'s to put the other side to have two, four line "horseshoes."

I know we don't like to talk about politics but I lived next door to a Bay of Pigs veteran who had spent some time in a Cuban prison, I'm pretty sure he is one happy hombre today! I missed it, had no idea, I was playing with the layout.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Great looking backdrops. My railroad region is the southwest United States. The backdrop will be desert and distant mountains. I've looked at the commercial backdrops but they will cost about $3K to do the whole basement. I recall an article in Model Railroad magazine of a couple years ago on doing your own backdrop. I would have to make a trip down to Arizona to shoot my stills then apply them and have them printed by a local print shop. The one thing I'm having trouble with is the top edge of the backdrop. Getting the sky the same color as the painted wall will be difficult.
