Good afternoon, and good Friday to you sirs.

I think my locale has seen the last of 90°F this year. We might see one day, maybe two at 90°F, but they are becoming rarer every day.

I've already had flannel on this month as we had a few cool days and some chilly nights here after the last heat wave broke...and hopefully done with.

The A/C is probably off for good for the rest of the year and the windows are wide open now until mid-Oktober. Sometimes they have to be closed at night though, dipping into the upper 50s and lower as the season progresses.

That's all I got today except for a 6-pack of Bitburger bottles waiting for me.

Good afternoon, all! Presently sunny, but rain predicted later this afternoon. Spent most of yesterday afternoon cleaning up my work bench in the garage. I had been piling stuff on the bench for months. Crap was falling off, so I figured it was time to find the bottom. "Oh, that's where I put that". I also swept the garage as a bonus.

I find Amazon to be terrible with search results. I have searched "laser cut N Scale Structures/kits/buildings" and I got every kind of kit available. but few were laser cut and some were HO. You really need to read closely before ordering.

I'm pretty sure I can wait on getting the snow blower ready. Might ought to buy one first.

Sherrel - certainly one of the good guys.

STAY SAFE
LATER

Sherrel Weems (Sirfoldalot), passed away on this date in 2024.
I still miss him, especially during baseball season. He was a former amateur player and a fan with a wealth of knowledge of old school baseball. I have been thinking of him even more lately. My decrepit hands keep accidentally hitting the caps lock key! I pray he will always be with us in our hearts and minds.

Thank you, Willie, for remembering him here today.
Amazon returns really are easy, they may be too easy. I had read somewhere that all returns went into the dumpster, rather than being sorted for resale. Such a waste if it is actually true.
I don't know firsthand, but I did know a manager who transferred to an Amazon Return Center. I haven't spoken to him in over a year after he was promoted again and transferred to Seattle. Some of his observations and suggestions were used to reduce waste, increasing profits. Which lead to his promotion. Amazon does pay a few high salaries. But in return they often expect as much as one hundred hours of work per week, no overtime for salaried managers.

I asked a similar question and here are excerpts from the answer.

In 2021, it was estimated that one-third of Amazon returns were thrown away, contributing to six billion pounds of landfill waste annually. Amazon has since launched initiatives to reduce waste, including resale programs and donation partnerships.

At the Return Centers items are checked for damage, missing parts, or signs of use. If the packaging is pristine and the item unused, it may be resold as new, but this is rare.

Other packages:
Resale as new or open box via Amazon Warehouse.
Refurbishment for electronics and appliances.
Liquidation - sold in bulk to resellers on the Grey Market.
Donation through Amazon’s FBA Donations program.
Recycling or disposal especially for damaged or low-value items.

Third-party sellers may choose to have items returned to them, but this can be costly, especially for international shipments.

Personally, I often look for "Used Like New" on Amazon. From my experience these are new items with damaged packaging. Often sold at a significant discount. One thing to consider when buying used like new are the scammers who switch items in the box before returning it. Amazon's inspectors at the Return Stations are not high paid experts and can be fooled. It hasn't happened to me, but I was warned to be on the lookout.

Regardless of what happens all returns are a tax deduction for Amazon.

Well, that was a pleasant surprise.

I'm a member of the Adam Savage's Tested Youtube channel (costs a couple bucks per month), and he likes to do Q&A livestreams every couple of weeks. Being a member, I get to submit questions.

You might remember Adam as the energetic Mythbuster working with Jamie Hyneman as the original team in the show.

Well, Adam read and answered the question I submitted. Here's a screen grab, just to prove it... ;) Sorry, no vid. You'll have to trust me until the replay gets posted.

My question was basically: I'm about to start an N-scale layout, and want to create scenes that tell a story, without getting bogged down in every detail. What tips and tricks do you have to help not get hung up on the minutiae?

His answer was to rephrase the question. I like his answer, but it didn't head the direction I expected. Though I suspect the result was the same.

He said that when he's working on a pet project, and has "all the time in the world" his output is different than when he's working "on the clock" (with a deadline). He went back to his days at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM - he worked on Star Wars Ep 2 and lots of other ILM movies). He said he got to work with a model made by one of their best makers. His supervisor called him and asked him what he noticed about that model.

Adam told the boss that some parts were exquisite, and others barely sanded or joined to not hide seams or corners were too sharp. As he looked, he realized that the maker had constructed the model (it was the Chicken Walker, IYKYK) to look good with the camera shots, but not take all of his time letting the perfect get in the way of the good and finished.

His answer was more involved, and I just nut-shelled the overall message. But it makes sense. I think he said something like "give yourself a week to create a landscape like Logan's Run, and it will look like crap the first go. But you'll learn what to spend time making look good, and what to minimize your effort on."

Volleyball game last night started rough. We were facing a 20-8 deficit in the first set and they miraculously came roaring back to
win the set. They never looked back and destroyed them in the second set. we are off to a 2-0 start.
20-8... Call them the Cardiac Kids! That kind of back to the wall win can propel them to remarkable things, I love it! Thanks for the update, I look forward to more.

There have been many times we have gotten wrong or damaged items that they issue you a refund and just tell you to keep the item. No need to send it back.
It is often cheaper to let you keep it than to pay the cost of the return.

We can just take the items that require retuning and take them to Stapes. They throw it all in a big box. Whether it goes back to Amazon or somewhere else who knows but there are huge open boxes that the stuff just gets dumped into.
Those bulk boxes are picked and sent to the nearest Amazon Return Center for sorting.

Afternoon. It's 97F and 52% on the patio today.

I have no idea where you are all getting your cooler weather. Then again, it looks like 80's next week (and some rain this weekend), so we'll see.

Where is everyone??? Over 2.5 hours since the last visitor.
Can't speak for everyone else, but I'm currently hiding from the world.

Hope you're having a happy Friday, folks.

Hey gents. We got a false fall here in mishawaka got the windows open letting the house breath. hopped on the interwebs today looking at different lighting stuff and found a dioramo place that is a local MERICA business that I'm looking at. even with a layout on hold I still find my self on evilbay looking at stuff. to many wants and not enough money lol. anywhoozle got college football starting tomorrow nut Sunday gonna spend a few hours infront of a TV yelling for a team who cant hear me as the fighting Irish play miami. then got pros next Sunday all my teams play so got the steelers colts and packers all playing so got a few good weekends here.

We're back home after our trip to southern Colorado, seen a lot of country that we haven't seen in many years.

I've taken many pictures (as you all have seen) and here is a video of the Cumbres and Toltec RR at Antonito, CO. Never been here to see the railroad here, it was always in Chama, NM (which I posted video and pictures here before). Anyway, enjoy the video and if any one wants to see pictures of the Cumbres and Toltec RR in Antonito, let me know.

Must be nice to start getting some cooler weather. It's still the same over here at 34C/93F, while not as hot as you folks, it's in the 90% humidity range. I go outside to wash my paint brush and I can feel the skin on the back of my neck baking off.

My daughter works at the hospital and they are getting a lot of business due to the heat. Not sure why, though. Perhaps spending too much funds on model railroad stuff and not enough on AC...

For you folks that have a hot train room and some space around it. This AC experiment seems to have worked. I've always wanted to try geothermal.

I didn't watch this, yet -- I'm a sucker for such videos -- and I'm sure it doesn't reach the effectiveness of our geothermal but geothermal is awesome. House stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter and the cost is relatively low and flat. Part of it is the house as well of course, being super insulated air tight, and efficient.

Our geothermal drives hydronic piping in the house (water piping in the floor for radiant). So the floor in the summer is nice and cool and in the winter warmer. It's not super warm in the winter because it doesn't have to run that often.

Good evening guys and gals. I need your thoughts and prayers this week, as you're so inclined. I'm kind of a private guy so don't as for help all that often, but I need all the good vibes, faith and prayers, etc. coming my way.

(Sorry this turned out to be long)

I've mentioned before that I got laid off back at the end of February. I'm still without work, though I did go through several complete interview processes including their multi interview "company culture" final interviews. And did not get tapped. I also got several other interview starts but got dropped out somewhere in the middle. For everyone, but especially in tech and software, it's really a strange and "brutal" job market right now. Between economic uncertainty, looming changes due to so-called AI, and companies that just can't make up their minds and want the mythical 150% of checkboxes ticked candidate, it's hard. 3 other guys were laid off at the same time from our group, split between N America (US/Canada) and India got moved pretty much to India. None of them are working yet at new full time jobs. And on LinkedIn there are people in all sorts of fields, but especially in software, who've been looking for months without any a callback.

Anyway, I just mentioned the market conditions as background. I had severance for 4.5 months plus some COBRA money that we didn't need for COBRA so it went into the pot as general funds -- about 1/3 month. Because of how tax withholding works. severance is withheld at higher rates than normal salary (its like a bonus) so we didn't quite have the same cash flow as when I was working though the gross was the same but we were able to make it work and get our house interest payment made. We were, with the banks blessing, always a month late but always paid before their systems calculated it as late so we were never reported. And they considered us up to date as long as we made it before the end of the month that the due date was in. However, with the severance we were able to make that payment each month. But with severance running out mid July we were not able to make it this month. The payment due July 17, which was supposed to be made by Aug 17 to not be late, and because of the way there system works, we really had until the end of the month, which was today. So we'll be calculated as late and probably reported as such. Its not a death knell if I can quickly get work and repair the problem by catching up since when we go to refinance the current construction loan we're on to the long term, the bank will understand 1 late payment related to this very house and the circumstances, as long as it's not ongoing. And the current bank, as long as we they see a path forward won't file delinquency with the county to start the (approx 4 month) road to foreclosure -- which we would try and forestall by trying to sell it since it's worth a lot more than we owe. I have been collecting a decent unemployment payment from the state unemployment office for the last several weeks but it just goes to meet minimum payments for things with the wife's wages as well.

(The reason we're still on the construction loan is because we got a temporary occupancy and I got laid off two weeks later and we didn't have a chance to convert to permanent occupancy which the long term bank needs to see).

But we're not to that point yet and with all that explanation, the purpose of this posting. I've been applying for jobs all summer, but especially a lot the last month. It's a lot of work to find appropriate ones, modify the resume to match the job, write cover letter, research it for those purposes, etc. Even with ChatGPT help. This week, I had two recruiters contact me for initial recruiter screening calls to start their interview process. If I pass the recruiter screening, then I get to talk to their technical folks etc and start their long and overly arduous process that most companies have today. Neither job is particularly compelling or great paying, but they'd do for now. The first one is a EHR company (electronic health records -- the apps the doctors use now to record things about you instead of doing it on paper when your in their office, hospital, etc). Their stated salary range if I had the top, plus their annual bonus they do, would get me back where I was at the old job. I had that interview today, and the recruiter was forthright and said the company is cheap and ever pays the upper range, but usually just the midpoint or upper of the bottom half. He said he's been trying to get higher management to understand but that's how it is. I don't know how I did in the interview but he said he would contact me in teh next couple days to let me know if I was advancing to the next step or not. It seemed to go well but I don't really know. He had to go at the end of the 30 minutes because he was scheduled for someone else. The other one who contacted me is involved in insurance risk management or something and is at an office somewhat local to me instead of remote and they do hybrid. They did not list a salary range in their job description posted but did list one in their invitation to the recruiter screening interview. It's lower at the top end than the one I did today. Not that interested but if it's the only one to work out I can do it for a while until something better happens. But I don't think its big enough to save the house.

BUT, what I need your good vibes thoughts, and prayers for, besides that the best thing happens and the right thing happens, is the third one that came up. I won't mention names right now but one of the major tech companies that we all have heard of contacted me yesterday (Thursday) on LinkedIn. The lady (recruiter) said she had a job that they needed to fill and would I be interested. I said sure and sent her the requested resume. She got back a few hours later saying the hiring manager wanted to talk to me, and gave me a link to her calendar to schedule myself today for a recruiting screening call. SO I had that one as well. The interview went very well. This job is a good step up and could be worth good money. Enough to scratch all my itches right now. And they seem keen on moving me along. Her tag line in her email was some sort of internal recruiting manager and she said that she was going to pass me along to the internal recruiter who works with this group and so would handle prepping me, introducing me, and getting me through their process in detail. That's where I am at now. I sent them this afternoon my availability for the next technical step over the next 5 business days, but since it was Friday and later in the day I have not heard back on when I will be talking in detail to that recruiter to get started or when I'll have the first tech interview with their hiring manager.

Interestingly I had applied for this job blind as a "walk in" from the LinkedIn job board, not as a recruiter contact, back several months ago and had not heard anything. So they wanted me to fill out the application, and mark some categories of being a recruiter contact so it wouldn't get lost in the general blind applications. But their system wouldn't let me apply as it said I had already applied (and it was not listed as an active application so at some point someone, probably an automated system had marked it as not interesting). So I had to create a new account in their job system under one of my other emails accounts and re-apply, marking all the correct boxes so that they know it is a recruiter contact. But then I had to tell the recruiters the story and what email it was under and I hope that it doesn't end up being a problem.

So my request is your good vibes and thoughts, and/or prayers for those inclined, that the best thing happens and that I find away through our current circumstances, but especially that if possible, I can get through this last company's process and maybe end up there. It's the most interesting job in terms of the details of the job itself -- career wise far superior and challenging as well. And financially so far better than the other options.

So that's the situation and especially the request.

Best wishes, sir! I hope you land any job soonest, the last one mostly. LinkedIn - never knew what it was and I was saying it incorrectly as I thought the In was Ln, so of course it didn't make sense. Glad that it actually worked!
