Afternoon, folks. It's 92F and 54% out here on the patio today.
Two and a half inches of rain yesterday.
TWO AND A HALF INCHES! On a random day in early August where they said we had a 30% chance of getting about a tenth of an inch.
@santafewillie: lucky indeed!
The rain was much appreciated.
Am
still feeling just kinda meh. That's now coupled with an unpleasant issue today, which is not making me happy. I do not want to be tethered to the bathroom tomorrow, since I have a train show to go to!
I'm hoping that will be fun. The train show, not the bathroom...
Just ran a couple trains and dug out the totes of old Unitrack. It's time to get that organized and sold off.
I'm guessing that's all HO? If any of it is N, let me know what you have and I might be interested.
We stopped at a Target store near the Public Market and a 20oz bottle of Diet Dr Pepper was $5.49 each.
Holy crap! That same bottle is... $2.39 at my local Target. More than twice the price before sales tax is insane! I member when they were $1.50 out of a vending machine...
They charge a 18% service charge which is distributed amongst the entire restaurant staff including the supervisor.
Tipping is becoming a bit of a trigger for me in general, I think. And I've never worked in food service!
I've always seen tips as rewards for good service. They are rewards
to the serving individual,
directly from the customer. I am not tipping the
business; I'm tipping the
worker! In far too many jurisdictions (including mine, sadly), this isn't what happens, though.
Where I am, minimum wage is $7.25/hour,
if you're not a food service worker. If you are, it's $2.13/hour, though the employer still has to make up the shortfall between there and minimum wage once tips are added in. How the hell is that
not considered theft of those tips from the people who rightfully earned them?
It's exploitative in a way that I really don't like, and that I think is deeply wrong. I'm tempted to say that people in jurisdictions like mine should stop tipping completely since it's not the tipee that's actually getting the money; make the businesses pay their workers
properly until the law is fixed.
The "shared tips" thing also bothers me a little, but it's
far less offensive. The rest of the staff does have a bearing on the service, so it's at least an attempt at fairness if it's done properly. Right up until the employer claws those tips back by not paying a reasonable wage...
I feel really bad for
all of those people.
Then you add in the "mandatory tip" thing, and it's no longer a tip in my mind; it's part of the price of the meal.
That mechanism is flat out fraud as far as I'm concerned; they're putting a meal price on the menu that's 18% or however much lower than the
actual price. It should be illegal; they should have to give alternate menus to large groups or whatever that include the correct prices instead of sneaking it in at the end.
Yeah, I tend to rant about this. Sorry. I'm going to shut up about it now before I end up writing a (bigger) book...

On a lighter note, the Austin train show starts tomorrow! I have no idea what to expect, but I'm very much looking forward to it. My only issue is that I wanted to take the train down there, but it would probably be a mistake; I don't want to have to carry any purchases I make back home on said train. Maybe on Sunday, depending.
I'll let y'all know how it goes.
Have a good day, folks, and TGIF!
