A question for you 2A and Gunsmithy type of folks.

Way back when I was active in the political spectrum, (2009-2015) we invested in a few firearms. I sold the long guns off when we moved to LA, but kept three pistols. Ruger SR9, Taurus PT24/7, and a Browning Buckmark.

All were cleaned after their last trips to the range.

But, with my wife's medical problems with her shoulder, she no longer wants to shoot even the Buckmark for fear of inflaming parts she's finally gotten to calm down.

So, we don't go to any range at all.

How often do I need to break those down, inspect, and re-lube? Any other care I should be giving them?
Put some lube in and on. You live in a humid area so you should check them periodically. Especially anything not stainless.

I have not seen some of my stuff I years. I know it’s there but since it’s dry here there is no need.

But, as an example, when I moved from Utah to Nevada I had a Swedish Ljungman rifle that I brought with. I left it in my closet and after a month in New Hampshire it had a very light layer of surface rust. I quickly wiped it down with a bunch of protectant oil. Had sat in Utah without issue but one month in NH and it started the surface rust.

Especially anything blued you want to check and wipe down with a. Good protectant oil.

That is amazing! My 6 D-cell LED is only 694 lumens, and I thought it was bright!

I have a 3 D-cell incandescent Maglite as well and it is only 45 lumens, and it appears dim now that I have LED versions.

The little 2 C-cell Maglite I keep at my desk is 177 lumens.
Yeah the new LEDs have really changed things. As part of my business I used to sell some of the name brand tactical lights (not LED — this was almost 20 years ago). The lumen rating was low. For a police light. Then the LED started coming. The initial ones were a bit brighter but not that much. Just lasted longer. Now they have some crazy bright stuff.

I loved reading this for two reasons. First a girl playing chess, too cool and second letting her win accomplishes nothing. Losing will teach her how to win. Her day is coming.
But perhaps helping her understand why a particular move might. It be the best and encouraging her to think about it more might be useful. Always losing and not getting enough feedback to be able to learn why could become discouraging. Not saying Willie is doing that. That’s just a generic statement.

She is of the "lose and learn" camp. We always discuss moves that I think are bad, but we don't have "redo's". That's the way she likes it. She learned how to play from her Mom, who I taught ~40 years ago. BTW She's 10 years old. She also plays against her cousins, my grandsons, but the younger one (16 yo) does let her win sometimes; usually because of boneheaded moves on his part.

As an old coach I left that part unsaid.

Baseball coach that is.

Although I was the only football player who was also on the high school chess team. If the two conflicted football came first. I was not one of the better chess players, but good enough to make the team. I learned a lot from losing match after match. By the end of the year, I had won a few matches.

And I just learned about Freestyle Chess... now my brain hurts.

Basically, the pawns stay in their normal rank, but the back row is randomized (use a computer randomizer). Bishops must be on opposite color squares, and the rooks must be on opposite side of the kings.

The idea is to liven up the game, and make the opening moves less predicable on how the game will go.

I was never that good at Chess. I did enjoy playing as a kid and young adult.

I know there was a strategy and you had to think multiple moves ahead. I wasn't that good at it.

I haven't played in probably 35 years, but still remember how to set the board up and how all the pieces move.

I am not a chess player, i did play as a youth but did not develop an interest.

The one game I do enjoy is cribbage, especially with 4 players. On some past jobs we played over lunch break. I learned the game at Boy Scout camp and have enjoyed it ever since.

It seemed like luck would always come in streaks. Some calculations involved, but you have to have the cards, too.

Good afternoon. The 9 to 1 OPS session was good. A few unusual glitches but I guess these sessions can’t be perfect everytime. I never had an issue but I kept hearing from 2 aisles away, “who has my train, I don’t?” A ten minute break to re-set the computer and CTC stuff and it didn’t help. Re-set the WiFi and all was good. 10 engineers, 4 conductors, 2 yard masters and 2 yard helpers. The dispatcher today was the owner’s 20 year old grandson who has been working to a MMR certificate from the NMRA. He needs only 4 more certificates. The owner was the Trainmaster the 1st hour until the glitches started. To me the issue was very minor. What surprised me were 2 guys who wouldn’t stop bitching about it. Jeez it’s just play time not life!

No blocked mail boxes today. But 2 of the 3 trucks in the neighbor’s driveway are blocking the sidewalk. That’s a City ordinance NO-No but I’m not saying anything. A roll on tow truck did pick up the truck out front with the airless tires last night. Do I feel guilty? I didn’t get caught, so not really. I’m still surprised they didn’t try to re-fill them before getting it towed

Been home maybe 25 minutes and the WeatherChannel app is saying the smoke has lessened. It looks ok but I can still smell it

The granddaughter showed up while I was gone. She was bored and crabby so she texted grandma if she could come over. Her Summer time Nannie/tudor called it sick today. Her mom hauled her over and will be back to pick her up for speech therapy.

Enjoy the day

The now 11 year old grandson learned to play in 1st grade math class a few years ago. He’s now going into 6th grade. He’s played me and for everyone 1 I win he probably wins 4. I learned in grade school but our game at home was Pinochle for $.01 a point and $.05 per game. Started playing that before kindergarten! That how all 3 of us learned to count, do addition and subtraction and card count! Then we wondered why I had a gambling problem as an adult! Pinochle in the caddy shack waiting for a bag was huge in 7, 8 and 9th grade Summers but with higher stakes. College was a Wisconsin game called Sheepshead or Smear elsewhere?

Chess gets the whole brain involved

Glad the medical went OkieDokie! I see you re-signed up at MRH forums. The diner here is 1500% ( a President Trump term) better plus it’s a good crowd! They do have some outstanding modelers that post though
Ya, been at this forum since 2010 as the crap at MRH bugged me. Signed back into MRH has there are still people that are almost like this forums folks and fun to chat with. Trainboard is also one that really gets out there, so haven't been reading/posting to that for awhile. Gave up on MR forums years ago as they are pretty much crap in the presentation.

I spent about 3 hours cleaning up the old Winchesters, Marlins, 1911's, and S&W that were bought last week.

I did figure out the mystery .44 Triple Lock (1st Model). 1912 manufacture, uncommon 5" barrel, correct stocks but s/n to a different revolver, ejector star is in the white, and it was factory refinished. I found 6 52 (date of refinish) and a diamond on the grip frame. Diamond under the ejector star, and a diamond inside the ejector shroud. The star next to the serial number was the dead giveaway. It would be hard to tell it had been refinished otherwise because the roll stamps are crisp like new. I'll put it on Gunbroker next week as a penny auction.

The shop confirmed that they paid for the Colt and Marlin factory letters, so those should be here in 30 days or less. The Glock factory reps came in and said that they each want of the two 28 guage Model 870 Wingmasters. The 16 gauge Model 12 and 1897 are probably going to sit for a while.

When the consideration goes to how many amps the battery can put out, then you know you've gotten in too deep! I started going in that direction but luckily stopped as i realized that these lights are all just sitting around doing nothing. I only use my NEBO CRYKEYs because they can twist to 90 degrees and stand up. I upgraded 2 out of 3 to a higher lumen led but lost the focus of the reflector due to the size of the led and needing to clearance the reflector. The light originally needed 3 AAA batteries but an 18650 fits perfectly with a pvc pipe sleeve.

UPDATE:
I spoke with a member of the S&W collectors assoc and he said that with a factory refinish there would be an "B" or "N" in the diamond or rectangle. There's not, so he's fairly confident that it was a repair. He believes that the ejector star, without blue, was part of the repair. It would seem odd that it wasn't blued if there was a factory refinish done.

Here's my current line up. R to L:

6 cell
4 cell
Convoy
Lumintop
Tasco
Nebo at 90
Nebo
Lumintop
and my version of EDC - Olight

All are loaded with LI batteries except for the Olight at AAA.

Spot of the Convoy at 4000 lumens

Spot / flood of the 6 cell at 4000 lumens. Can't focus it. Color is whiter than the Convoy. Should have gone with the warm white like the Convoy as it can see through mist better.
6 CELL.jpg

6 cell led element. Bought the backing plate and led from lumintop. had to solder it on.
6 CELL ELEMENT.jpg

4 cell element. This is a complete drop in set w/reflector. no focus.

My lumintop (4th from right) is the one I use to look into my pond at night as it is also warm white. Cuts through water better than the cool white. A consideration for headlights.
